Use of Passive

Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important or not known, however, who or what is performing the action.

Example: My bike was stolen.

In the example above, the focus is on the fact that my bike was stolen. I do not know, however, who did it.

Sometimes a statement in passive is more polite than active voice, as the following example shows:

Practicing III

Using either a computer or a piece of scratch paper, rewrite the following paragraph in the active

voice.

Last summer our house was painted by me. The job took about two weeks. First, the

exterior was washed using warm water and a mild detergent. Then all the chinks and pores in the

walls were sealed with putty. After the putty had had a chance to dry, the exterior could be

painted. A latex paint was used because it is easy to apply and cleans up with water. A whole

week was needed to finish this part of the job. I was very careful to apply the paint evenly

because I did not want to have to apply two coats. A color was used that was very close to the

original color. Our house is a two-story house, which meant that a tall ladder was needed to do

the second story. The paint can had to be balanced on the top rung of the ladder while I worked.

When the job was finished, a great deal of satisfaction was felt by me. I had to pat myself on the

back. Even my dad said that a good job was done.

Profile: Russell Watson

Singer Russell Watson, 40, who is critically ill in hospital with a brain tumour, made an unconventional rise to singing stardom.

The Salford-born son of a factory worker, Watson worked 12-hour nightshifts for a nuts and bolts factory and in his spare time began singing and performing arias in working men's clubs and local halls.

It was only when he won a local radio talent contest, beating 400 other hopefuls, that he decided to pursue his musical passion.

Watson's big break came in 1999 when he was invited to sing at Old Trafford at Manchester United's end of season game against Tottenham Hotspur.

His first album release, The Voice, sold 450,000 copies in the UK in its first three months.

Watson first experienced health problems after the release of his third album in 2002 when a lump was discovered on his vocal cord.

Faced with the possibility of losing some of his vocal range, Watson underwent surgery to remove the lump and returned to full health.

The singer had an operation to remove a benign brain tumour in September 2006 after falling ill in the US.

Watson was recording on Thursday when he was taken ill again, and admitted to hospital for surgery.
