We all want that sweet, sweet Google traffic, but most bloggers overlook the easiest way to get it: Linking. Think of your blog like a city. If there are no roads (links) connecting the houses (posts), nobody- especially not the Google bots – can get around. Here’s the breakdown of how to build those roads without losing your mind.

1. Internal Links: Keep them on the Property

These are links from one of your posts to another.

Why care? It keeps people on your site longer (lower bounce rate!) and tells Google, “Hey, I actually know a lot about this topic.”
The Pro Move: Stop using “click here.” It’s boring. Use descriptive text. Instead of “Click here for my cake recipe,” try “This [super moist chocolate cake recipe] is a total crowd-pleaser.”

2. External Outbound: Don’t Be a Link Hoarder

This is when you link to other websites.

Why care? Some people are afraid to “send readers away,” but linking to high-quality, trustworthy sources actually makes you look more credible. It tells Google you’re part of a neighborhood, not a hermit in a cave.
Keep it classy: Only link to sites you actually trust. Linking to a sketchy site is like giving your readers bad directions.

3. External Inbound (Backlinks): The High-Five

This is when another site links to you.

Why care? This is the holy grail. It’s basically a public shout-out that tells search engines, “This blog is the real deal.”
How to get them: Create stuff people want to share – like a killer infographic, a hot take on a trend, or a really deep-dive guide.

How to Level Up Your Linking Game (The Easy Way)

The “Hub” Strategy: If you have a “main” post (like The Ultimate Guide to Paris), make sure all your smaller posts (Best Cafes in Paris, What to Pack for Paris) link back to that main guide. It creates a “power loop” for your SEO.
The Sidebar Trick: Have a post that’s already viral? Stick it in your sidebar or footer. Since that sidebar shows up on every page, you’re constantly sending “link juice” to your best content.
Clean Up Your Mess: Broken links (the dreaded 404 error) are like potholes. They annoy your readers and make Google think your site is abandoned. Use a free broken link checker once a month to keep things smooth.

The Bottom Line: Don’t just hit “publish” and walk away. Spend five minutes adding 2–3 links to every post. Your future traffic will thank you!

Pro Tip: Use Google Analytics to check your “Bounce Rate.” If it’s high, it might be because users can’t find a way to explore your other content.

Personally, I believe that a whole-food, plant-based diet is the ultimate prescription for optimal health and longevity, and I wholeheartedly encourage anyone reading this to learn more about it!

But no matter what your health goals look like, consistency is key. In this post, I’ll be featuring the pages I use most from our Printable Ultimate Life & Blog Planner – specifically the menu planners and grocery lists – and sharing the biggest benefits I’ve experienced from putting pen to paper for my meal prep.

For lunch, I’m a big fan of incorporating leftovers from the night before to keep food waste to a minimum. But for the days when leftovers run out, I use the Lunch Menu page to keep a running list of my absolute favorite, quick go-to meals! I treat this menu as a permanent fixture in my planner so I never have to stress about mid-day meals. One of the best parts about these printable sheets is the built-in organization: there’s a dedicated spot to jot down where to find the recipe, a section for fresh ingredients so your produce never goes bad, and a place to track other key staples so your pantry is always fully stocked.

Meal Planning and Grocery List

Unlike my breakfasts and lunches, my dinner menu changes weekly as I plan different meals for the whole family. As I map out these dinners, I simultaneously build my grocery list. The truth is, the healthiest decisions you make actually start right in the grocery store aisle! Having a pre-made list based on your weekly menu makes it incredibly easy to avoid tossing junk food into your cart. If you don’t bring the temptation home, you can’t eat it.

A quick tip: Even though I don’t label myself strictly “vegan,” I actually use the Vegan Grocery List included in the planner for my weekly haul! Because my family focuses on whole, plant-based foods, I buy a ton of fresh produce. This specific version of the list has much more space dedicated to fruits and veggies, making it perfect for anyone trying to eat more greens.

The meal planner is handy because it shows you an entire weeks worth of meals and snacks all on one page. This can be coordinated perfectly with the breakfast, lunch and dinner menus that you’ve already planned from the other pages. Having everything laid out on a single page helps you see the big picture of your food intake and so you can make sure you are eating a well-balanced diet each day and week.

Many clients have come to us with WordPress.com blogs, wanting us to do custom design work for them. While it is possible to do some basic customization there, we are so limited in what we can do with their layouts that we have chosen to work exclusively with self-hosted, WordPress.org websites and blogs.

If you are confused by the two different versions, you are certainly not alone! Today, we are comparing WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org so you can easily decide which route is best for your online presence.

Let’s start with the basics:

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a content management system (also called a CMS) that powers your site or blog, letting you manage everything without needing to learn a single line of code. There are other systems out there – like Wix, Squarespace, or Blogger – but WordPress is currently the most popular and powerful platform on the web.

For your website or blog to be visible on the internet, you need three things:

Web Hosting
A CMS (WordPress)
A Domain Name (optional, but highly recommended)

Think of it like building a house. Hosting is the plot of land you buy (your piece of the internet), the CMS (WordPress) is the house you build on that land, and the Domain is your street address so people can find you.

Pros and Cons of Self-Hosted WordPress (.org)

Below are a few essential pros and cons of managing your own self-hosted WordPress site.

Pros

Complete control: You have total ownership and control over your site.
Customization: You can use any custom theme you want (including Designer Blogs themes!).
Endless features: All third-party plugins are available to you.
Under the hood access: Complete control over your website’s coding and files.
Monetization: Absolute freedom to use AdSense, affiliate links, and other ad networks.

Cons

Cost: There are monthly or yearly web hosting costs (You can get started for just $1.99. Click here to learn more).
Maintenance: You are responsible for handling your own spam control, site backups, and software upgrades.

The WordPress software itself is 100% free!

What is WordPress.com?

WordPress.com is simply a hosted version of the WordPress software. The main difference is that you do not need to buy your own separate web hosting. WordPress.com is a company that sells you access to WordPress already installed on their servers (this is a huge simplification, but it explains how it works).

This means you no longer need to worry about the technical side of hosting safety or maintenance. However, instead of paying a hosting company, you pay WordPress.com for access to basic features.

Getting a basic WordPress.com site is free, but you are very limited in what you can do. To get features similar to a self-hosted WordPress.org site, you need to pay for a premium plan, which currently ranges from $4 to $45 a month. If you are a massive enterprise, they even have a VIP package that starts at around $25,000 a year!

Pros and Cons of WordPress.com

To help you decide which route is better for you, here are a few pros and cons of using WordPress.com.

Pros

Beginner-friendly: Free and incredibly easy to set up.
Hands-off maintenance: Upgrades, spam protection, and security are all taken care of for you.
Reliability: Your info is hosted on WordPress.com’s massive servers, so your site is much less likely to ever crash or go down under heavy traffic.

Cons

Design limits: Tons of generic themes are available, but you cannot use a custom theme (like a Designer Blogs theme) unless you pay for a higher-tier plan.
Paywalls: You need to upgrade to a Business plan to use some plugins.
Ad restrictions: You require a premium package to run your own ads and fully monetize your site.
Locked files: You do not have access to your core WordPress files.
Scalability: For larger sites, upgrading their plans is ultimately more expensive than just using self-hosted WordPress.

WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org for Blogging

In our minds, WordPress.com is very similar to Blogger. You get a nice, simple, budget-friendly setup. But if you are a serious blogger who wants to own your content and have complete, unhindered control over your design, self-hosted (.org) is going to be the route you want to go.

Conclusion: Which WordPress is Better?

We generally do not recommend WordPress.com for serious bloggers because you quickly run into strict limitations when you want to customize your site. Ultimately, self-hosted WordPress offers total freedom and complete ownership of your content in the long run.

While the free version is fine for hobbyists wanting to test the waters, the sheer flexibility of having your own hosting makes it worth building a proper, self-hosted site right from day one.

Availability: If your first choice is taken, you’ll see a message saying, “Sorry, this blog address is not available.” Get creative until you see the “This blog address is available” confirmation.
Custom Domains: Don’t worry if the .blogspot part bothers you! You can replace this with a custom domain (like .com) later. Contact us if you’d like help setting that up!

Once you’ve found the perfect address, click Next.

5. Confirm Your Display Name

Owning a self-hosted WordPress site is like owning a car. To keep it in tip-top condition, you must perform regular maintenance. Just as a car needs oil changes, your themes, plugins, and WordPress core must be updated to ensure everything stays secure and functional.

Updates can feel scary because, on rare occasions, a plugin conflict can cause a glitch.

Because there is a small risk of things going wrong, always back up your database before you learn how to update WordPress and its components.

WordPress is constantly evolving. Every update is packed with security patches, bug fixes, and new features. Here is why staying current matters:

Security Fixes: According to WPBeginner, 83% of hacked WordPress sites are not updated. Hackers study release notes to find vulnerabilities in old versions. Updating immediately patches these holes and shuts the door on attacks.
Bug Fixes: No software is perfect. While some bugs are minor (like a disappearing sidebar), others can cause site crashes or security leaks. Developers are quick to fix these, but you only get the protection if you actually run the update.

How to Spot Available Updates

WordPress makes it easy to stay current. When you’re logged into your dashboard, look for the circular arrows icon in the top menu bar or the Updates tab in the sidebar. Both will show a notification bubble with the number of pending updates.

Clicking either link takes you to the WordPress Updates page, where you can update everything in one place. You can also see specific notifications within your Plugins tab next to any tool that requires an update.

How to Update WordPress

Before attempting any updates, remember to backup your database. It’s also wise to plan to do your updates at a time when your traffic is at its lowest because your site may appear in maintenance mode for a few seconds during the updates.

When you are ready, visit your “WordPress Updates” page to perform your updates.

Once here, just click on any items listed here and click the update button.

WordPress Version

Check your WordPress core first. Most sites now use an auto-update system for minor releases, but if a manual update is available, click the update button to ensure you have the latest security patches.

Plugins

You can update all plugins at once, but I recommend updating them individually. Check your site between each update; if a glitch occurs, you’ll know exactly which plugin caused it. Always verify that the plugin is compatible with your current WordPress version before clicking “Update.”

Themes

Perform updates for the Genesis Framework and even inactive themes. If you are using one of our designs, updating the Genesis Framework is safe and will not disrupt your site’s layout.
