What is the secret to a growing blog? While there isn’t a single magic rule for success, the traps that hurt your growth are almost always the same. To keep your site on the right track, avoid these 4 common blogging mistakes:

1. Don’t Clutter Your Layout

When it comes to web design, less is more. Packing your site with heavy design elements and endless widgets slows down your load time. If your site takes too long to load, visitors will leave before reading a single word.

The Fix: Keep important content at the top. Clear out the digital noise so your actual writing can shine.

2. Don’t Use Harsh Colors or Unreadable Fonts

Loud color schemes and colored post backgrounds quickly strain the eyes. The same goes for typography: fancy script fonts might look great in a logo, but they make body text impossible to read.

The Fix: Stick to clean, classic fonts for your posts. If a visitor can’t read your content comfortably for five minutes straight, it’s time to change the design.

To give you some idea about not so good colors and fonts combinations below you will find a text written in two fonts – Opulent and Geometrica.

Even thou both sides are using the same fonts, text on the left is much easier to read. Using too light fonts, too dark background for darker fonts or capitalized script fonts is usually a bad idea if you are not experienced in design.

3. Don’t Ignore Mobile Compatibility

In the modern digital landscape, mobile responsiveness isn’t a luxury – it’s a necessity. The vast majority of web traffic now comes from smartphones and tablets. If a reader clicks your link from social media and your site looks broken or cut off on their phone, they will hit the back button instantly.

Regularly check your new posts on your own phone to see how they format.

4. Don’t Overcomplicate Your Navigation

Your audience should understand what your site is about within seconds. If they have to hunt for your categories or contact page, they will give up. However, giving them too many menu buttons causes “decision paralysis.”

The Fix: Use clean navbars and limit your main menu to a maximum of 7 buttons. Keep it to a single horizontal line on desktop screens.

1. Internal Links: Keep them on the Property

These are links from one of your posts to another.

• Why care? It keeps people on your site longer (lower bounce rate!) and tells Google, “Hey, I actually know a lot about this topic.”
• The Pro Move: Stop using “click here.” It’s boring. Use descriptive text. Instead of “Click here for my cake recipe,” try “This [super moist chocolate cake recipe] is a total crowd-pleaser.”

2. External Outbound: Don’t Be a Link Hoarder

This is when you link to other websites.

How to Level Up Your Linking Game (The Easy Way)

• The “Hub” Strategy: If you have a “main” post (like The Ultimate Guide to Paris), make sure all your smaller posts (Best Cafes in Paris, What to Pack for Paris) link back to that main guide. It creates a “power loop” for your SEO.
• The Sidebar Trick: Have a post that’s already viral? Stick it in your sidebar or footer. Since that sidebar shows up on every page, you’re constantly sending “link juice” to your best content.
• Clean Up Your Mess: Broken links (the dreaded 404 error) are like potholes. They annoy your readers and make Google think your site is abandoned. Use a free broken link checker once a month to keep things smooth.

Food is amazing – it has the power to help our bodies perform at their absolute best, provided we are nourishing them properly. Personally, I believe that a whole-food, plant-based diet is the ultimate prescription for optimal health and longevity, and I wholeheartedly encourage anyone reading this to learn more about it!

But for the days when leftovers run out, I use the Lunch Menu page to keep a running list of my absolute favorite, quick go-to meals! I treat this menu as a permanent fixture in my planner so I never have to stress about mid-day meals. While it is possible to do some basic customization there, we are so limited in what we can do with their layouts that we have chosen to work exclusively with self-hosted, WordPress.org websites and blogs.

If you are confused by the two different versions, you are certainly not alone! Today, we are comparing WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org so you can easily decide which route is best for your online presence.

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a content management system (also called a CMS) that powers your site or blog, letting you manage everything without needing to learn a single line of code. This means you no longer need to worry about the technical side of hosting safety or maintenance. However, instead of paying a hosting company, you pay WordPress.com for access to basic features.

Getting a basic WordPress.com site is free, but you are very limited in what you can do. To get features similar to a self-hosted WordPress.org site, you need to pay for a premium plan, which currently ranges from $4 to $45 a month. If you are a massive enterprise, they even have a VIP package that starts at around $25,000 a year!

We generally do not recommend WordPress.com for serious bloggers because you quickly run into strict limitations when you want to customize your site. Ultimately, self-hosted WordPress offers total freedom and complete ownership of your content in the long run.

While the free version is fine for hobbyists wanting to test the waters, the sheer flexibility of having your own hosting makes it worth building a proper, self-hosted site right from day one.
