Personally, I believe that a whole-food, plant-based diet is the ultimate prescription for optimal health and longevity, and I wholeheartedly encourage anyone reading this to learn more about it!

But no matter what your health goals look like, consistency is key. In this post, I’ll be featuring the pages I use most from our Printable Ultimate Life & Blog Planner – specifically the menu planners and grocery lists – and sharing the biggest benefits I’ve experienced from putting pen to paper for my meal prep.

Because mornings are usually busy, I tend to eat the same set of healthy breakfasts each week. Since my morning menu rarely changes, having it written down serves as the perfect quick reference. Before heading to the store, I just check my pantry against my planner and easily restock my go-to ingredients when writing out my weekly grocery list!

The Go-To Lunch Menu

For lunch, I’m a big fan of incorporating leftovers from the night before to keep food waste to a minimum. But for the days when leftovers run out, I use the Lunch Menu page to keep a running list of my absolute favorite, quick go-to meals! I treat this menu as a permanent fixture in my planner so I never have to stress about mid-day meals. One of the best parts about these printable sheets is the built-in organization: there’s a dedicated spot to jot down where to find the recipe, a section for fresh ingredients so your produce never goes bad, and a place to track other key staples so your pantry is always fully stocked.

Meal Planning and Grocery List

Unlike my breakfasts and lunches, my dinner menu changes weekly as I plan different meals for the whole family. As I map out these dinners, I simultaneously build my grocery list. The truth is, the healthiest decisions you make actually start right in the grocery store aisle! Having a pre-made list based on your weekly menu makes it incredibly easy to avoid tossing junk food into your cart. If you don’t bring the temptation home, you can’t eat it.

A quick tip: Even though I don’t label myself strictly “vegan,” I actually use the Vegan Grocery List included in the planner for my weekly haul! Because my family focuses on whole, plant-based foods, I buy a ton of fresh produce. This specific version of the list has much more space dedicated to fruits and veggies, making it perfect for anyone trying to eat more greens.

The meal planner is handy because it shows you an entire weeks worth of meals and snacks all on one page. This can be coordinated perfectly with the breakfast, lunch and dinner menus that you’ve already planned from the other pages. Having everything laid out on a single page helps you see the big picture of your food intake and so you can make sure you are eating a well-balanced diet each day and week.

While it is possible to do some basic customization there, we are so limited in what we can do with their layouts that we have chosen to work exclusively with self-hosted, WordPress.org websites and blogs.

If you are confused by the two different versions, you are certainly not alone! Today, we are comparing WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org so you can easily decide which route is best for your online presence.

Let’s start with the basics:

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a content management system (also called a CMS) that powers your site or blog, letting you manage everything without needing to learn a single line of code. There are other systems out there – like Wix, Squarespace, or Blogger – but WordPress is currently the most popular and powerful platform on the web.

For your website or blog to be visible on the internet, you need three things:

• Web Hosting
• A CMS (WordPress)
• A Domain Name (optional, but highly recommended)

Think of it like building a house. Hosting is the plot of land you buy (your piece of the internet), the CMS (WordPress) is the house you build on that land, and the Domain is your street address so people can find you.

Pros and Cons of Self-Hosted WordPress (.org)

Below are a few essential pros and cons of managing your own self-hosted WordPress site.

The WordPress software itself is 100% free!

What is WordPress.com?

WordPress.com is simply a hosted version of the WordPress software. The main difference is that you do not need to buy your own separate web hosting. WordPress.com is a company that sells you access to WordPress already installed on their servers (this is a huge simplification, but it explains how it works).

This means you no longer need to worry about the technical side of hosting safety or maintenance. However, instead of paying a hosting company, you pay WordPress.com for access to basic features.

Getting a basic WordPress.com site is free, but you are very limited in what you can do. To get features similar to a self-hosted WordPress.org site, you need to pay for a premium plan, which currently ranges from $4 to $45 a month. If you are a massive enterprise, they even have a VIP package that starts at around $25,000 a year!

Pros and Cons of WordPress.com

To help you decide which route is better for you, here are a few pros and cons of using WordPress.com.

WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org for Blogging

In our minds, WordPress.com is very similar to Blogger. You get a nice, simple, budget-friendly setup. But if you are a serious blogger who wants to own your content and have complete, unhindered control over your design, self-hosted (.org) is going to be the route you want to go.

Conclusion: Which WordPress is Better?

We generally do not recommend WordPress.com for serious bloggers because you quickly run into strict limitations when you want to customize your site. Ultimately, self-hosted WordPress offers total freedom and complete ownership of your content in the long run.

While the free version is fine for hobbyists wanting to test the waters, the sheer flexibility of having your own hosting makes it worth building a proper, self-hosted site right from day one.

• Custom Domains: Don’t worry if the .blogspot part bothers you! You can replace this with a custom domain (like .com) later. Contact us if you’d like help setting that up!

Once you’ve found the perfect address, click Next.

5. Confirm Your Display Name

Owning a self-hosted WordPress site is like owning a car. To keep it in tip-top condition, you must perform regular maintenance. Just as a car needs oil changes, your themes, plugins, and WordPress core must be updated to ensure everything stays secure and functional.

The Golden Rule: Back Up First

Updates can feel scary because, on rare occasions, a plugin conflict can cause a glitch.

Because there is a small risk of things going wrong, always back up your database before you learn how to update WordPress and its components.

Issues caused by updates are very rare, so don’t let fear prevent you from securing your site. If you ever run into trouble after an update, contact your hosting provider. Most hosts can help you restore your most recent backup quickly.

Why WordPress Updates Are Essential

WordPress is constantly evolving. Every update is packed with security patches, bug fixes, and new features. Here is why staying current matters:

How to Spot Available Updates

WordPress makes it easy to stay current. When you’re logged into your dashboard, look for the circular arrows icon in the top menu bar or the Updates tab in the sidebar. Both will show a notification bubble with the number of pending updates.

Clicking either link takes you to the WordPress Updates page, where you can update everything in one place. You can also see specific notifications within your Plugins tab next to any tool that requires an update.

How to Update WordPress

Before attempting any updates, remember to backup your database. It’s also wise to plan to do your updates at a time when your traffic is at its lowest because your site may appear in maintenance mode for a few seconds during the updates.

When you are ready, visit your “WordPress Updates” page to perform your updates.

Once here, just click on any items listed here and click the update button.

WordPress Version

Check your WordPress core first. Most sites now use an auto-update system for minor releases, but if a manual update is available, click the update button to ensure you have the latest security patches.

Plugins

You can update all plugins at once, but I recommend updating them individually. Check your site between each update; if a glitch occurs, you’ll know exactly which plugin caused it. Always verify that the plugin is compatible with your current WordPress version before clicking “Update.”

Themes

Perform updates for the Genesis Framework and even inactive themes. If you are using one of our designs, updating the Genesis Framework is safe and will not disrupt your site’s layout.

Ever thought about starting your own blog or website? It’s a great way to express yourself, connect with others, or even grow a business. But let’s be real, the whole process can seem a bit daunting. Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! This post walks you through the key steps, making the journey from idea to online reality much easier. Learn how to start a website or blog in 4 quick steps!

This tutorial will walk you through how to launch a self-hosted WordPress site on Bluehost (our preferred web host) in 3 simple steps.

How to start a blog or website

I know what you’re thinking: “I’m not techy enough,” or “I don’t have the time.” But trust me, starting a blog or website is much easier than you think. This post breaks down the process into manageable chunks, so you can take it one step at a time, at your own pace. No coding skills or endless hours are required!

Step 1 – Find a space for your new site

Think of a website or blog like building a house. First things first, you need some land, right? Online, that land is called hosting. It’s basically your little slice of the internet where your website lives, and you usually rent it out for a monthly or yearly fee.

To get your hosting in place, head to Bluehost and click on that big blue button.

Step 2 – Select a plan

The “business” plan is the most popular and really does give you the most bang for your buck, but if you want to start with the “personal” plan due to limited funds, know you can always upgrade in the future if needed.

If you haven’t thought about what you want to call your blog, now’s the time.

Next up, you’ll need a domain name – think of it like your website’s address. If you don’t have one already, no worries! You can easily create one. It’s how people will find your site and remember it. Ideally, your domain name should match your blog’s title (like ours is Designer Blogs, so our domain is www.designerblogs.com). If your dream domain is already taken, try playing around with variations of your title – the system will usually give you some suggestions.

Review your cart

Now check your package details and add extras. You do not really need any of them if you start your site, so do not feel pressured to check all the boxes.

Keep your shopping cart simple. All you really need right now is the hosting and a domain (if you’re getting a new one). Those other “free” goodies? They might seem tempting, but they’ll probably cost you later on when the free trial runs out. Trust me, you can always add them later if you need them.

Make sure to choose the billing cycle that works best for you. Keep in mind that the longer the period you commit to, the lower the monthly rate will be!

Finally, enter your billing information, confirm that you’ve read the fine print, and hit the ‘Submit Payment’ button. Be sure to use a working email address because this is where your login info will be sent.

Your hosting account will now be in place.

Follow the instructions on your screen to set up your Bluehost login details and install your new WordPress. Remember to note all the logins and passwords in a safe place, as you will need them later!

Step 3 – Open WordPress

If you follow all the steps, Bluehost will automatically install WordPress for you, and you can start working on your new blog right away.

You can log into your site by going to:

www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin (“yourdomain.com” being your own personal domain).

This will bring you to the login area on the backend of your site. Bookmarking your login page so you can easily access it when you need to log in is a good idea.

Enter the login info you wrote down from the previous step and then click “Log In.”

First, let’s get your basic settings in place, so in your dashboard, go to “Settings” and then “General.”

Enter your site title and tagline here and correct other information if needed. Once ready, save all the changes.

Now, I highly recommend that you change your permalink settings for SEO purposes. To do this, go to “Settings” and then “Permalinks,” select the “Post name,” and click “Save Changes.”

I also recommend you click through each option under “Settings” to get the additional options set up like you want. You can also visit our WordPress Tutorials page for additional help in setting up other areas of your site.

Step 4 – Make it Gorgeous!

You have learned how to start your own website, now it’s time to make it look fabulous! You have a few options when it comes to the look of your site. You can use one of the free generic themes that are included with your WordPress install. Go to “Appearance” and then “Themes” to find them. As you can see, there isn’t much to look at, and there isn’t much variety, but if it’s not within your budget to spend money on a theme right now, then it’s a good place to start.
