One can drive his vehicle from Cebu City as early as 5:30am and reach Lake Balinsasayao, in San Jose, Negros Oriental before noon on the same day.

Here’s how we took that road trip:

We left Cebu City at 5am and reached our house in Oslob at 830am. We had our quick breakfast and then proceeded to the Lite Shipping port at Bato, Samboan. Their port is located a few meters away from Maayo Shipping’s port. We used Lite Shipping because they’re offering a big discount (P800 round-trip fare for our AUV), and we have to catch up with their 10am trip.

Bato to Tampi, Amlan is a smooth 30-minute ride. After disembarking, turn left when you reach the highway. That route heads to Dumaguete, while if you go right, it will lead you to Bais City.

When you reach the San Jose municipal town plaza, you may go to their market to replenish supplies or you can go straight to the Twin Lake junction located a kilometer away from the town center.

Then you turn right up towards the hills. It’s a bumpy ride so it’s not advisable to use your race car, or your sedan. If you have a 4wd or an AUV, the better. Some go there using their motorcycles. Some even use mountainbikes. If you don’t have your own transport, a motorcycle can take you there for a P150 fare per head.

Some portions of the road are cemented but not all. There are rocky and muddy portions. However, the roads looks better now than it was 10 years ago. They said that typhoon Sendong damaged and eroded some parts. True. So be careful when you drive. The picturesque scenery might tempt your eyes away from the road.

What to expect at the Twin Lakes

You can swim. You can kayak. You can enjoy a boat ride. You can fish. You can hike and enjoy nature at its purest. You can also put up a tent and stay overnight. Lake Balinsasayao is part of the a twin Lakes. The other is Lake Danao. You can actually hike from one lake to the other.

Though it’s eerily quiet, the place is safe as there are guards on watch. Entrance fee is only P10.

Here are some pics I took.

It’s quiet disappointing that we only stayed a few minutes to enjoy the scenery. But we will surely be back there before the year ends.

For those board takers who needs some time for themselves to relax and ponder on their future after knowing their results of the May 2012 CPA board exam, Lake Balinsasayao is a place I recommend.

Nuffnang Philippines is going to Cebu and will be having a meet and greet event with Cebu Nuffnangers at Red Box, Ayala Center Cebu on April 28, 2012 (Saturday), 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM.

TOURING CEBU

So, if I were the tour guide, where will I bring the team? Let’s say that this just a two-day tour.

Day 1

1. A trip to the USC Museum – They’d not only visit the country’s oldest school, but they get to see various collections of religious and archeological relics from all over the country.

2. A walk at Colon street. – This is the Philippines’ oldest street. No, this is not named after your bodies colon, but after the famous explorer Christopher Columbus, aka Cristobal Colon. You won’t find old Spanish houses hire unlike Vigan’s Calle Crisologo. But nevertheless, you’re traversing on multi centuries-old street.

3. A Visit to the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño. – You will find lots of pilgrims here. For some, just to be here ignite their spirits.

4. A Glimpse of Magellan’s Cross – Who is Magellan again? He’s the Portuguese explorer (but sailed under Spain’s name) who discovered the Philippines. Of course, the Philippines was already here and occupied by Malays and Chinese. It was Magellan who put this nation in the map.

5. A stroll at Fort San Pedro. This is once one of the Spanish main fortresses in the South. Picturesque fort! You can have your prenup pictorials here

6. Lunch at Sutukil in Mactan. It’s not shoot-to-kill but a shortcut for sugba (inihaw), tula (tinola), kilaw (kinilaw). The price here is definitely lower than the price at any of Manila’s dampa.

7. A Visit to the Lapulapu Shrine. I was once asked by a touring acquaintance from Luzon “Who is Lapulapu?”. A little bit shocked, I replied “He’s the Philippines’ first hero. He was the leader of the band that killed Magellan.” Who killed Lapulapu? Ans: Kusinero. The famous lapulapu fish is called pugapo at sutukil.

8. A glimpse of Shangri-la. This famous five-star hotel is only a few kilometers away from the Lapulapu shrine.

9. Zipline Ride at Papa Kits Liloan – It’s an interisland ride with a magnificent view of Silot Bay.

10. A Sky Experience Adventure at Crown Regency Hotel – Afraid of heights? Don’t look down. Just experience the view from the top of Cebu’s tallest building located at the heart of the City.

11. Dinner at Larsian. Barbecue and puso, anyone? Don’t ask for spoon and fork.

12. Tops or Mountain View. You get to feel the mountain breeze and a with a very scenic view of the city.

13. Coffee at the Walk in Asiatown IT Park. I will not mention them as they are not sponsors.

Day 2

The coffee will make you sleepless in Cebu. So put on your beach attires as we head north to Bantayan Islands, with it’s pristine white sand beaches.

1. Ride the first trip of the Ceres Bus to San Remigio Cebu.

2 Take a boat ride to Sta. Fe Bantayan. Before 8am, you are already in the island. Don’t be tempted and jump off at the Pier. I know it’s tempting already because of the clear waters.

3. Negotiate with banca middlemen for an island hopping adventure around the beaches of Sta. Fe and the nearby Virgin island.

If a day is not enough, can always stay for another day and choose from among the plenty of resorts nearby. I tell you, Bantayan Island is paradise.

P.S.. To those bloggers who won’t be able to make it to the top 50, maybe you can also meet and greet with each other at the fountain outside Red Box. Who knows they might let you in at the party.

The schedule of the May 2012 CPA Board Exam is drawing near and reviewees must be very busy right now with their preboards exams and final preparations. In less than 30 days, CPA hopefuls will troop to the exam venues in various cities of Manila, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo & Legazpi. To those who are searching for the exam schedules, here is a snippet of the schedule from the BOA memo.

Click on the picture to view the PRC’s Board of Accountancy memorandum on the May 2012 CPA board exam schedule.

If you have yet to take the preboard exams, don’t fool yourself by copying from your seatmates. It’s pointless and will not work. I remember a seatmate who was busy looking at my papers and that of her friend. I played a bad boy role and mockingly covered my answer sheets. I couldn’t help but laugh at the situation especially when she threw a dagger look at me. Exams during review aren’t like the exams and quizzes you take in college. These are just self-assessment that will help you gauge your performance.

I also heard stories of reviewees getting the answer keys from review assistants just to have some form of bragging rights for topping the preboard. Well, it could be fun for them. But in the end, who suffers?

If you’re getting low scores on the preboard, don’t lose hope. Strive harder. They say that the actual exam is easier than the preboard. Or it could be the adrenaline rush on the exam day itself. Here’s hoping that your name will be included in the list of passers of the May 2012 CPA board exam. All the best to you!

Hundreds of dewdrops to greet the dawn,
Hundreds of bees in the purple clover,
Hundreds of butterlfies on the lawn,
But only one mother the wide world over.
~George Cooper

Mothers Day, in most countries, is celebrated every second Sunday of May. This 2012, it falls on May 13. But we don’t really have to wait for that occasion to show love towards our mothers.

Every mother is unique and special. The Lord has blessed us with mothers in this world. Each one of them need to know that we appreciate their presence in our lives. And giving them gifts is one way of expressing how we feel. Giving of gifts to our moms doesn’t have to fall on a special day or occasion. Why not do it spontaneously?

Here is a small list of gift ideas, especially Mothers Day gift ideas this 2012, which might help us out in giving our moms that unique and special gift that she deserves:

1. MOM’s COUPONS- Do your mom a huge favor and a wonderful surprise, by creating a coupon book for her. Carefully select a nice paper and you can print your own specialized coupons from your computer or from a computer center. You may make your own designs. These coupons may be redeemed anytime, your mom wants to. Here are some ideas: Body massage, foot spa, house cleaning, doing the laundry for her, breakfast in bed, etc. I am pretty sure she will totally love your gift.

2. BOOKS/ MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTION- For moms who love a good read, one can choose from any inspirational books for women, (Chicken Soup for the Mother’s Soul) or books that tackles about parenting. Perhaps you can also subscribe her to a year’s worth of magazine e.g. Good Housekeeping, Reader’s Digest, etc.

3. FLOWERS/BOUQUETS - Most women love flowers and certainly most moms are not exempted from that. Find out what her favorite flower is.If you can afford it, you can go to a flower shop and have a bouquet made and delivered just especially for her. She will be totally surprised to know that you really thought of her. But if your budget is limited, you can simply buy a single long-stemmed rose for her, just to let her know that she is someone special and loved.

4. SHOPPING- take her shopping! She will totally love it! Make it an all-girls shopping spree. Just the two of you. Buy her a new blouse, sandals, bags, perfume, something she will enjoy using. It doesn’t always have to be designer wear, but just the thought of you both spending time together and laughing together is enough to make her happy. Afterwards you can probably treat her and yourself to an ice cream or coffee and simply just enjoy the rest of the day.

5. CROSS-STITCH, MUGS, ETC.- if you know how to make a cross-stitch, you can secretly bring your mom’s photo to a computer shop and ask them to make a pattern of her picture, so that you can cross-stitch it. It may take up a lot of your time, but then she will appreciate your work and effort of love. Or you can have her photo also placed in a mug or tumbler.

6. TECH GADGETS – Who says they don’t know how to use the iPad or that latest iPhone? They might be techier than we imagined. Of course, we can’t get rid of the siblings’ envy if we get to the point of giving them cool tech gadgets.

This is just a simple list of gift ideas for mothers. Whatever we give them, I know they will appreciate it.No matter how small or how big or how expensive our gift maybe, the important thing is, they will know that they are special and they need to be treated the same.

Happy gift giving!

The whalesharks (tuki or butanding) are now in Cebu! I know this isn’t news anymore as thousands have already personally witnessed these wondrous and friendly sea giants after photos and videos floated in the internet late in 2011.

I first saw a blogpost of a friend and she posted pictures of these whalesharks. She did not divulge the name of the place as it was not yet on the media at that time. But a few days later, an article from the local daily came out identifying the old and sleepy town of Oslob, Cebu. Here is my friend’s pic and a link to her site:

Pic source from Wanderlass
Oslob, 120km south of Cebu City is my father’s hometown. In fact we have a house there that stood on top of a cliff facing seaward. When I told my father about the discovery, he simply said that local fishefolks already know about these creatures as they have appeared in the past. An uncle butted in and said that on certain days, the whalesharks are visible from our house. Really?

I’ve also watched GMA 7’s Born to be Wild show and was really amazed. Here’s a short video of their sea encounter:

It is best to go to Tan-awan, Oslob early in the morning. Tan-awan is 8-9 km after the town proper (125km from Cebu City). It is a 3-hour bus ride so it’s best to ride the 3am or 4am trip. If you arrive at noon, most likely the whales are already in the deep waters near Sumilon Island. Weekends are mostly full and the bancas are limited. There’s also a cheap resort where you can stay. You may contact Ms. Marilyn Lagahid at 0906-5869895 or 0933-5095736. You don’t have to go snorkeling or scuba diving to watch the whalesharks of Oslob. In fact, you don’t even have to swim at all.

And take note that whalesharks are migratory mammals. They don’t need visas and passports to roam the wide ocean. Their seasonal stay at Oslob may be over soon. Their next stop might probably be somewhere in the Pacific Ocean so you’d better see them while they are holidaying in Cebu.

Are you looking for cheap, affordable, clean and reliable hotels, inns and pension houses at the heart of Cebu City, specifically near Fuente Osmeña? You know, Sinulog 2012 festival is just around the bend and most hotels are fully booked on the Sinulog weeks – 7 days before and after (January 15, 2012). Have you made your reservations?

If not Sinulog, maybe you want to be here one summer weekend to enjoy the beaches, or experience whale watching in Oslob. Your trip could also be for business, or just for the sake of travel, as some young people these days often do by buying airline promo fares to their favorite destinations, or to places they’ve never been before. As they say in Cebuano, “mga laagan, gyud”.

Portal East opens Cebu showroom—Top uPVC doors and windows manufacturer Portal East, Inc. expands its reach to the Visayas-Mindanao region by opening its very first showroom located along A.S. Fortuna Road in Mandaue, Cebu recently. The showroom was created by Portal East, Inc., a leader in terms of innovation in creating a better view for homes and businesses by designing, testing, manufacturing quality uPVC windows and doors for new construction, remodeling and replacement applications, in order for its Cebu- and Mindanao-based clients to better appreciate what Portal East’s products can do for them in terms of their windows and doors requirements.
The 50-square meter showroom will showcase Portal East’s top-notch uPVC windows and doors. With this showroom, the company will reach a wider base of customers who require quality uPVC windows and doors for their homes or offices.

Ralph Tanco, Portal East Inc.’s Marketing Manager, says that construction for the new showroom started in July and is slated to open by November 25, 2011.

The showroom will feature Portal East’s line of uPVC windows and doors. The showroom has a sitting area where Portal East customer service representatives can assess the needs of their clients. Tanco says the area will be cozy and have the same relaxed and homey atmosphere as in their showrooms in Valenzuela and at their plant in Caloocan. Even the showroom’s signage has been designed to attract the attention and curiosity of prospective clients.

He says Cebu was chosen for the Visayas showroom because of its strategic location in the Visayas-Mindanao region. He said there are plans to expand in the Davao City area within the next two years.

“We will see first how the Cebu showroom will fare before we look at opening showrooms in other areas,” he explains.

Tanco is optimistic the Cebu market will boost the firm’s success. “We are confident that our portfolio of products and their sculptured designs will suit the unique taste of Cebuanos for their homes,” he says.

With its foray in the Visayan region, customers in the area will experience the Portal East brand of customer service. “Part of our reputation was spread through word-of-mouth,” he says. “With our presence in Cebu, we hope to spread the word about our company, our quality products that offer them safety, security and privacy, and the kind of no-nonsense customer service we provide.”

Since it started nine years ago, Portal East Inc. has serviced more than 2,000 clients, mostly residential clients who comprise 70 percent of its market. Its product have caught the attention of many high-profile consumers who value the kind of innovative designs that is the hallmark of its lines of uPVC windows and doors.

Oh it’s Christmas time again! And if you’re working in an office, it is very hard to escape the company’s exchanging gifts activity during the Christmas party. In some, it is compulsory. If you fail to attend the party, you still owe a gift (and will surely receive one too).

In my 15 years of being under the corporate umbrella, I have never experienced an office Christmas party whose exchanging gift value is above P1000. It must be the hard times, the economic crisis, you know. Or most likely, the money is reserved for the noche buena table than spent on office Kris Kringle. So usually, the gift value is set at P250, P300, P400 or P500.

Cool Christmas Gifts for Officemates under 10 Dollars (or under 500 Pesos)

How far can your P500 or $10 (US$1 = P44 is the current exchange rate) go when it comes to Christmas gifts for your officemates? You don’t actually have to go to Divisoria to purchase these gifts. Imagine the hours, sweat and saliva you will spend there just to purchase a gift worth P500 or less.

Two places come to mind – one is a bookstore, and the other is a tech gadget shop. In my part of the world, I’m referring to National Bookstore and CD-R King. They have stores almost anywhere.

What cool gift can you buy in the bookstore? One is a cool Parken pen with the recipient’s name engraved on it. The last time I checked, the cheapest is only worth P299 with free engraving. You may add a nifty penholder or a leatherette-covered planner.

Or you can buy books. The latest bestsellers cost a little over P500 but there are bestsellers of the previous months that cost less. Just check around if your recipient had already read that book, or is into books. They might just want an audiobook instead.

There are also affordable gifts you can buy in a tech gadget shops. A flash disk drive, and SD card or even a microSD card, can be bought at under P500. The 8gb or higher are more expensive though, but just look out for some bargains and sale items. A cooling pad for my laptop, priced between P200 – P400, is cheaper than I thought. I’d be happy to receive one this Christmas.

Now that you already have an idea of what cool Christmas gift to buy, you must hurry up as these items sell like hotcakes. But wait! Have you received your Christmas bonus already?
