Honoring Vets November 11th

At the Eleventh Hour on the Eleventh Day of the Eleventh Month, The War to End all Wars was ended with the Armistice. That day is now known as Veterans Day.

On November 11th, 2009, Veterans of All Service Periods will be escorted from the VFW at Five Points and the American Legion across from the Library respectively, to the Veterans Day Services at Forest Lawn, by members of the Great Smokey Mountain AACA Car Club, The Hendersonville Antique Car Club, The Transylvania Car Club, The British Car Club, VW Club, and owners of Classic and Antique Cars.

The Cars will depart from the VFW and The American Legion; join together at the Legion and caravan down Main Street

Veterans and Car Owners wishing to participate should meet at 9:45 at The VFW or The American Legion for departure to the Park. Cars will return to their respective departure points approximately one half hour following the services.

Oklawaha Greenway - Grand Opening of Phase II 11/14

The City of Hendersonville will celebrate the Grand Opening of Phase II of the Oklawaha Greenway on Saturday November 14th. The event will take place in Patton Park with opening remarks and a ribbon cutting at 10:00 am. The public will then be invited to walk the new greenway as it travels from Patton Park, across the Norfolk Southern Railroad and N. Main Street, and south along Mud Creek to 7th Avenue East. Along the trail ECO volunteers will be available to point out the biodiversity found in that area. The land along the greenway has been designated by the State as a Significant Natural Heritage Area. Phase I of the Oklawaha Greenway continues on 0.75 miles from 7th Avenue East into Jackson Park. As an incentive for people to get out and walk, the first 100 trail users will be given a pedometer.

The new greenway is 1.1 miles in length and paved making it accessible for wheels as well as walkers. Trace & Company of Hendersonville was awarded the contract to build the greenway with construction beginning in May of 2009 and finishing in late October. Paved with an asphalt surface, the greenway is ten feet wide, has a new pedestrian bridge and special drainage features and base materials to anticipate the natural flooding that occurs with Mud Creek.

The Apple Country Greenway Commission has been instrumental in coordinating the
greenway efforts and gaining community support. Phase I, from Jackson Park to 7th Avenue East, opened in 2004. Phase II was built at a cost of $687,472. Of that total, NCDOT Transportation Enhancement Funds contributed $400,000 and the City of Hendersonville paid the remaining $287,472. City Council recently expressed interest in preliminary plans for Phase III of the Oklawaha Greenway that would travel from Patton Park to Berkeley Park.

Ron Stephens Donates Slice of Hendersonville Apple to HSAD

At the recent auctioning of the Downtown apples, Ron Stephens made the winning bid on the HSAD entry, The Core of Hendersonville. He then very, graciously, gave it to the HSAD.

Richard Crandall, manager of Mast General Store, brought his truck down to Courthouse and took the apple to Mast for short-term storage. Public Works (How good are these folks!) picked up the apple, grabbed a base, mounted the apple and placed it on the north end of Depot Plaza where it now stands in regal splendor.

So many thanks to Ron Stephens, Richard Crandall, Chad Freeman and Tom Wooten, the guys from Public Works, and, of course to Patty Henry for painting us such a beautiful apple!

Veteran's Day Salute at Fletcher Park 11/7

The short program will consist of the presentation of the Nation’s Colors and the Pledge of Allegiance by Cub Scout Troop 624, the singing of the National Anthem by Lisa Moore, and Michael H. Hinman Lieutenant Commander, U.S. Navy (Retired) as our featured speaker. The program will close with a moment of silence and the musical piece Taps by Kendall Wernet.

NEW - Wild Thyme and Lavender British Import in Hendersonville

Wild Thyme and Lavender opened at 121 N Church Street just a few months ago, but seems to be doing a brisk business.

The day I stopped in, two other parties were browsing the garden and home decor items imported from Great Britain. This is a very cozy shop packed with merchandise, so be prepared to "act compact" when you enter.

When I asked if they were going to carry Egg Coddlers, the owner said they were actually on order, but due to a Royal Mail strike, she wasn't sure when they'd arrive.

Future plans for Wild include expansion, adding a large outdoor garden display area behind the building and "possibly" a Tea Room.

Proud and Wowed! Hendersonville's Youth Get Served

Prepare to be impressed by what's happening in the space previously occupied by Crazy Lady Cafe, located at 121 W. Barnwell Street in Hendersonville.

Generation Y Youth Activity Center, sponsored by MyPlace, Inc. (scroll to bottom of linked page for interesting video), a nonprofit working toward positive youth development, has set up shop. Their Mission Statement:

“My Place” is a non-profit, transitional housing program for “unaccompanied” and homeless youth in Hendersonville, NC between the ages of 18 and 24. The comprehensive program incorporates counseling and support services, leadership development and parenting skills training, job/college readiness and placement support, and family re-integration where appropriate.

The Youth Activity Center space is big, but they haven't had a problem filling it with an amazing array of youth oriented services.

We're talking a Self-Paced Accredited High School (kids earn a diploma, not a GED), Walk-In Crisis Center, Generation Y (which encompasses a Recording Studio, Game Room, Fitness Center and Club Pulse), My Place Thrift Shop (benefits My Place and Generation Y) and Bubbalini's Diner/Restaurant (scroll to bottom of linked page to see video). It looks like they also have a radio program, Voices - Teen Talk Radio, planned.

The Hendersonville Times-News covered the opening of My Place in this "Kids Find a Place All Their Own" article.

The Generation Y Youth Activity Center has been a natural "next step" for Embracing Simplicity Hermitage, a Buddhist retreat and meditation center in Hendersonville that is also a new Henderson County-based shelter for homeless teens and young adults.

This June 1, 2009 Times-News article, "At-risk youth learn to garden" talks about two previously established My Place projects, Growing Healthy Together and Youth Build of WNC.

Youth participating in Growing Healthy Together "learn how to cultivate soil, grow and can vegetables, and develop some entrepreneurial skills to sell the veggies and flowers".

Youth Build of WNC's goal is to develop 16 townhouses that will be built by about 30 at-risk youth, ages 16 to 24. It will focus on helping My Place youth and others develop entrepreneurial skills and self reliance to build their independence.

Latest for My Place is My Place Produce. They've teamed with Anything Green Online to sell fresh produce online and in local grocery stores. The produce will carry a My Place label and be sold at competitive prices. A portion of each sale will be donated to My Place.

My Place is asking "1 million students with homes to help 1 million homeless students" by adding their name to those asking local grocery stores to carry My Place Produce.

PIC and I got to know some of these kids while helping them complete college Financial Aid forms at a local high school. They're awesome kids with so much to offer. All they need is a little help and it looks like Hendersonville is where they're going to get it.

NEW - High Country Style Opening at Biltmore Village

High Country Style, a North Carolina-based clothing retailer will be opening at Biltmore Village on November 5, 2009. They'll be located at 2 Swan, across from Phase I at 10 Brook St.

This annual event sponsored by the Outreach Commission of St. James offers shoppers meaningful and alternative choices for the gift-giving season.

Unique items from around the globe will be sold by Ten Thousand Villages, a fair-trade retailer of artisan-crafted gifts, home decor, jewelry and personal accessories. The Village of Flat Rock’s Tailgate Market will be celebrating the end of it’s 3rd season with a Harvest Festival on Thursday, November 5th from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Come celebrate fall and purchase the final bounties of the earth. Vendors will join in the spirit with special offerings of the season and customers can sample tasty homemade treats. In addition to the seasonal produce a wide variety of baked goods, honey, jams, jellies, herbal vinegars, herb teas, eggs, cheeses, lamb, beef, fish & seafood will be available. Many vendors will have handmade crafts and there will be a demonstration of spinning and carding wool.

The Flat Rock Tailgate market is organized/maintained by local residents as a non-profit group and is sponsored by the Flat Rock Merchants Association. Greater Tuna Opens at Flat Rock Playhouse

Experience the Southern-grown spoof that launched the Tuna phenomenon as Flat Rock Playhouse presents the satirical comedy Greater Tuna onstage November 4 through November 15.

WHAT: The unique citizens of Tuna, Texas believe that the world outside of Tuna is a bit bizarre and are very concerned with keeping Tuna clean from the influence of others. They live in a town that time has forgotten but that has kept on going as exaggeratedly and as humorously as possible. The show tells the story of a couple of days in the interwoven lives of the residents of Tuna. The local happenings include: UFO sightings, a large used-weapon sale; championing the cause of the local Humane Society; the censorship and book-banning squad; and a Polynesian-themed production of My Fair Lady at the local community theatre. There is also murder and intrigue, but everything is kept on the light side as the story weaves its way through this fascinating world and we discover who the murderer is.

The magic of the Tuna series is having two actors portray all of the quirky characters. The Playhouse’s favorite comedians, Scott Treadway and Michael Edwards, lovingly bring the colorful community to life by playing the men, women, kids, and even animals through lightning-quick costume changes and cross-dressing artistry.

This Maze is at Eliada Homes for Children (5 minutes from downtown Asheville)(MAP). The "haunters" will be the University of North Carolina at Asheville's Drama Department, and they will receive a portion of the proceeds. The maze will be filled with costumed actors and actresses, many of whom will bring classic horror movie characters to life. Tickets are $10 and $8 for groups of 20 or more.

The haunted maze is appropriate for middle school aged children and above. If younger children would like to attend, we recommend they come early (as close to 6 pm as possible) to enjoy the haunted maze while the sun is still out.

Festivities will begin with a costume contest at the gazebo in the 400 block of Main Street. There will be judges, and prizes. After the costume contest, merchants will have trick-or-treating, and that will last until around 7:30, or until everyone runs out of candy.

The Pumpkin Pedaller Bike Ride from 5:30pm - 8:00pm - Presented by: Asheville on Bikes

The ride begins at City County Plaza, just outside City Hall in Asheville, works its way through Asheville and culminates in the parking lot of Clingman Cafe.
The Melanaster Band's, Marley Carroll provides the musical entertainment for the evening.

Entry to the event is $5. Wedge Brew and Clingman Cafe's kitchen will be open. As always, costumes are customary and prizes are present.

The ride isn't strenuous, but there are a few short climbs so design your costume to be bike functional. Be well illuminated and wear your helmet.

The Apple Festival is over, leaves have changed and are dropping. Does Hendersonville roll up the sidewalks and call it a season? Absolutely not! Hendersonville restaurants are throwing a party in the form of a massive "After Apples - Small Plate Crawl".

Grab your friends and head to Downtown Hendersonville on Wednesday, November 11th for the "After Apples - Small Plate Crawl 2009"!

Over 20 restaurants will create special Small Plate Menus featuring three to five dishes that represent their cuisine and Chef’s talent. Crawl from restaurant to restaurant from 11:30AM to 9:00PM - lunch and dinner hours - sampling the best of Hendersonville's culinary scene.

Print your Small Plate Passport here. Present the Passport when purchasing Small Plates for validation. Buy a Small Plate at 5 or more restaurants to qualify for a prize drawing. Include a restaurant more than one block off Main Street in the “5 or more” to double your prize winning chances! Drop the completed Passport off at any participating restaurant. Winners will be contacted by email.

It's requested that you register the number of people and time of day, if known, you think you'll be crawling to give the restaurants an idea of what to expect. They want to be prepared! REGISTER HERE.

Groups and sharing are okay so you don't get too full before trying all your favorite restaurants AND the ones you've always wanted to try. This is a rain or shine event. Small plates taste just as great when it's raining outside!

Bikers and Hard Hats Take Over Main Street!

This Saturday night (October 24th), the final Bike Nite (autism fundraiser) of the season will be happening along Main Street in downtown Hendersonville from 5:00PM to 9:00PM. The Bike Nite series are sponsored by Mike's on Main.

Although bikes usually line Main Street for many blocks, the action will be at Third and Main and in front of the Historic Old Courthouse. There will be music, motorcycle games, raffles, competitions and giveaways. Downtown shops and restaurants will stay open late for event-goers.

Bike Nite also includes a fundraiser, Hard Hats for Autism. For $5, attendees can buy a hard hat that's good for discounts at 48 participating Hendersonville merchants. The Hard Hat fundraiser will continue through September.

Public Art Apple Auction Set for Saturday, October 24

It’s harvest time in downtown Hendersonville, as the Apples head to the auction block. Fifteen fresh, delightful, artfully decorated apples come up for public auction on Saturday, October 24. Everyone is invited to attend the auction, it’s sure to be “appeeling” to residents and visitors alike.

The auction will take place in front of the Historic Henderson County Courthouse on Hendersonville’s Main Street in the 100 North Block. A schedule of events for the day includes:

8:00 am-10:00 am – Harvesting of apples at Historic Henderson County Courthouse on Main Street
10:00 am- 2:00 pm – Tom Brown “Hendersonville’s One Man Band” featuring variety music
10:00 am-2:30 pm – Apples on display (sponsors and artists will be present to talk with bidders, media and visitors)
11:00 am-2:30 pm – Fundraiser luncheon at the courthouse featuring a chicken lunch plate offered by the Four Seasons Rotary Club. Tickets are $8 per plate.
2:00 pm-2:30 pm - Artist and Sponsor recognition ceremony
2:30 pm-Until – Public Auction of the apples – Stan Shelley and Joette Humphreys of Shelley’s Jewelry and Auction Gallery will serve as auctioneers.

Fifteen apples come to the auction block this year. Bidding on all apples will begin at $250. 50% of each winning bid will go to a local charity of winning bidder’s choice. 50% of each winning bid will go to Downtown Hendersonville, Inc. for future Public Art Display Expenses and Promotions.

Winning bidders should be prepared to write two checks -- one to charity of choice [50%] and one to DHI [50%].) The past six auctions of downtown public art have generated more than $125,750 for local Henderson County charities.

7th Ave E Railroad Crossing Repairs

From Tom Wooten, HVL Director of Public Works:

"(Below is a link to) a proposed detour route for the upcoming rail improvement project on 4th and 7th Avenue. NCDOT indicates that the routes will be signed as each phase of the project is under construction rather than signing all the routes at the same time, creating mass confusion. NCDOT also indicated the detour routes will be very similar to this plan.

Norfolk Southern indicated that the project will begin around the first of November but they have not provided a specific date nor have they told us which road they will work on first. I have asked for the 6th Avenue closure to be the last phase of the project in order to accommodate the detour routes for the other parts of the project. We were told the 4th Avenue phase will take about one week to complete and the 7th Avenue phase will take about two weeks to complete. No estimate was given for the 6th Avenue closure phase but I would guess it will take about two to three days to complete."

The maze is full of scary scenes and costumed characters. Guided tours of portions of the 6 acre maze are available.
