It all started 5 years ago. My boss was a diver too, and he asked me if I wanted to learn how to dive. I did... and all of my vacations instantly turned into diving ones on live-aboard ships. On one vacation I met Alexander Safonov, a famous underwater photographer. Talking to him was very interesting, and I wanted to try underwater photography for myself. It's not a cheap hobby—housing for cameras costs a lot more than the cameras themselves, but, by chance, Alexander was upgrading to a new camera with a new housing, so I bought his old housing with a good discount. I started learning underwater photography with a bit old, but nice Canon 350D camera. I think it's a good idea to buy used equipment when you first start shooting.

What scenery/person you have captured would you say inspired you the most?

The surrealistic sight of dolphins, birds and sharks hunting together in a huge feeding frenzy, attacking the sardines - "Surrealistic Run" picture.
Another picture that I like, is "The Empire of Colors". It's named after Magritte's painting "The Empire of Light," where the night landscape co-exists with the day sky. On my photo the same contradiction exists: I've made photos from the deep, where all colors are dimmed. But in my photo, birds and fishes that are deeper are painted in more intense colors.

What tools of the trade do you use most often?

Canon 5D Mark II camera in Subal underwater housing. Most of the time, I shoot wide-angle with Canon 16-35/2.8LII lens. Sometime, when I go for macro, I use Canon 100/2.8L Macro lens. I use two Inon Z-240 strobes for lighting. All the equipment weights about 18kg, and I always carry it with me as a carry-on luggage. There is also 25kg of diving equipment in a check-in luggage. I also carry a notebook with me for post-processing in Lightroom and Photoshop.

In 1830, Frances Wright and other reformers and activists started
the Popular Health Movement. This was a period when advances in
medical science were forcing contemporary doctors to think in
terms that would have been sacrilegious to their elders. Frustrated
by these new developments, proponents of the Popular Health
Movement sought to enforce the usage of older methods into the
practice of modern medical professionals. While some good has
resulted (in the long run and with the help of understanding
provided by modern research), it has to be admitted that the
Popular Health Movement also caused some medical blunders.
Some natural health concepts that arose as a result of the Popular
Health Movement are: Hydrotherapy, Herbalism, Eclectic
Medicine, and Natural Hygiene.
Thomsonianism is one of the earliest approaches to modern
western herbalism and it was founded by Samuel Thompson
around the year 1820.
The Association of Eclectic Physicians, an organization of herbals
doctors, was found in Wooster Beech.
At its very height, eclecticism was practiced by over twenty
thousand qualified doctors in the United States. By 1939, medical
schools were being largely influenced by philanthropists, and when
these schools failed to support eclecticism, it slowly died out.
Hydrotherapy was another branch of natural health and it
concerned itself with the application of water to the human body.
Though using only water as means of staying healthy might sound a
bit silly, for that time period it was a good thing. Hydrotherapy
advocates were very vocal about the importance of personal habits
such as diet, dress, clean water, fresh air, exercise, sunshine, and
herbs. Personal hygiene as it is followed today was not always such
an important issue. Hydrotherapy was conveying a very important
message. Origins of hydrotherapy can be traced back to Europe in
the Roman era when spas and hot mineral springs were a common
way for people to cleanse their bodies.
The European system of hydrotherapy was first introduced to the
United States in 1844 by the founder of Natural Hygiene, Dr. Joel
Shew. Dr. Shew later on enhanced hydrotherapy by focusing on its
other aspects like fresh air, lots of sunshine, a good diet plan, and
an exercise routine. In 1853 he established the college of Hygieo
Therapy.
The American Natural Hygiene Society was founded in
1948. Eventually, hydrotherapy had to give way to allopathy. This
was largely brought about by the fact that the people supporting
allopathy viewed hydrotherapy as a science of quacks because
hydrotherapy was so closely associated with the female social
activists of that era.
The core belief of natural health therapy is that all issues related to
health, sickness, and healing can be overcome through simple
means like prevention and a change in individual lifestyle. Natural
health follows the oldest rule of medicine: prevention is better than
cure. In view of this, natural health therapies are supposed to be
totally in control of the individual and not the doctor or healer.
The “natural” in the term natural health literally refers to the
physical world in which we live, or nature. This is but another way
of saying that according to natural health therapy all disease and
illness is nothing more than a natural reaction to some other
natural action. It is important to remember that natural health does
not have anything to do with faith or psychic healing which are
supernatural concepts and hence,
By definition, not part of nature. This difference is also the biggest
distinguishing factor between natural health therapies of European
origin and Eastern alternative medicinal theories that often rely on
belief systems such as spirituality, karma, ancestral forces, personal
auras, or energy flows. None of these can be perceived by our
normal senses and hence the Europe-born natural health theories
do not subscribe to them.
Going even further, natural health does not concern itself with the
origin of life, any religious beliefs, extra-dimensional worlds, magic,
and new age mysticism.
All natural health says is that all health and sickness can be affected
by simple natural therapies.
At its most basic level it can be said that natural health therapy
refers to only one thing: biological factors of health, especially as
they apply to everyday life in western society. In its early history,
the natural health movement did show considerable interest in
hydrotherapy and the relaxation it offered through the usage of
spas, steam baths, and other water cures. The more modern
additions to natural health that concern themselves with the bodymind
connection and how that relates to stress and tension are
influenced by eastern alternative medical theories.
Having said that, what natural health therapy finally implies is that
the human body has complete capacity to heal itself from most
forms of sickness (of course, a broken bone cannot be fixed by
altering your lifestyle, it needs to be put in a cast), mostly through
prevention. So as far as natural health thinking goes, all healing is
basically self-healing and this is considered to be a basic property of
all things alive.

Much like battle axes, daggers evolved out of prehistoric tools. In Neolithic times, daggers were made of materials such as flint, ivory or bone and were used as weapons since the earliest periods of human

civilization. The earliest metal daggers are of Beaker copper and appear in the early Bronze Age, in the 3rd millennium BC, predating the Bronze Age sword.
From pre-dynastic Egypt,daggers were adorned as ceremonial objects with golden hilts and later even more ornate and varied construction. One early silver dagger was recovered with midrib design. Traditionally, some military and naval officers wore dress daggers as symbols of power, and modern soldiers are still equipped with combat knives and knife bayonets. Copper daggers of Early Minoan III were recovered at Knossos.
In ancient Egypt, daggers were usually made of copper or bronze, while royalty had gold weapons. The 1924 opening of the tomb of Tutankhamun revealed two daggers, one with a gold blade, and one of smelted iron. Iron ore was not found in Egypt, making the iron dagger rare, and the context suggests that the iron dagger was valued on a level equal to that of its ceremonial gold counterpart.
One of the earliest objects made of smelted iron dates is a dagger dating to before 2000 BC, found in a context that suggests it was treated as an ornamental object of great value. First time making a website, I wrote my own code. To help me design the website, I also used some web builder applications like FrontPage and Dreamweaver. Indeed I needed more effort to deal with the codes. However, there was a kind of satisfaction after finishing that quite difficult job.
To this extent, everything was okay. But I was not an advanced and experienced code writer. Hence, the problem began appearing when I wanted something that needed more sophisticated coding skill.
Some years later, a friend of mine told me that making a website is not that difficult. "To make a professional-look website easily, we can use a CMS," he said.

"What is CMS?" I asked him curiously.

"It is Content Management System. It's like a magic machine, or an empty house in which you can put all of your furniture. You don't need to build the house from scratch. The Aladin's magic lamp will give you the house, but it's still empty. What you have to do is only putting everything you want inside the house," he said.

After the discussion, he gave me the magic machine. It's a zipped file, named Mambo. After extracting the file, I run the file. It's an installation, just like "installing your own house". Mambo was really like a magic machine. It gave me a website in no more than fifteen minutes.
After approximately one year using Mambo, I found that there was a new release of Mambo named Joomla. I was not waiting. I downloaded the installer file on the internet, and then I installed it. I found that Joomla was not much different from Mambo. Probably the difference was only in their names.
I really enjoyed Joomla. I made a number of websites using it. After installation finished, I just needed to customize the look of the websites. It's also not a work from scratch. Joomla lovers already made a huge number of web-design template. Some of them are free.
After several years using Joomla to make websites, someone told me that there was another magic machine. It is called Wordpress. I was so curious. Not waiting longer time, I downloaded Wordpress installer. Then I installed it. And yes, it's really amazing. I found that Wordpress was quite different from Mambo and Joomla. It's smaller in size. It's lighter because it's only designed for blogging. Using Mambo and Joomla, you can make a portal, ie a website that contains many things. Whereas using Wordpress, you can make a blogging website, ie a website that mostly contains only stories and pictures.
My new experience was making a number of websites using Wordpress. It's really easy to use as well as simple. Just like using Mambo and Joomla, I only needed to customize the template.
Now a question emerges: "Do you still need to write your own code in order to make a website?" Is this question confusing?
A friend of mine said that the answer can be yes or no. Both are possible. Some people said that a website built using CMS does not have high level security. Some cases show that a CMS-website is easier to hack. But it's actually not that weak (unsecured). As long as the website owner regularly upgrades the CMS, the website is already quite secured. The CMS company certainly releases the upgrades to make sure that the system is secured enough to use.
Writing your own code certainly results in higher security. The website made by your own code is usually also lighter, smaller in size. This can significantly save your hosting space. But writing your own code undoubtedly needs more effort and skill. Only some experts on PHP and SQL can do that job. Even if someone is an expert, he still needs more effort compared to making a website using CMS.
Now, the choice is in your hand: either to make your own code or to use CMS. Both are possible. I personally prefer using CMS because I am not an expert on PHP and SQL. I know the codes, but I am not an expert on it. By using CMS, I am able to make websites on my own without paying much money (to pay a web programmer). How about you?

Writing: Words, Structure, Outline, and Re-writing

Writing is one of many ways to communicate with others. When you write, you want to send information to others, through written media. Certainly you want the others to understand the information well. If they can understand well, it is called that you can send the information effectively. You have an image in your mind to transfer. If the image is transferred as it is to the others, it means you can communicate with the others very effectively. On the other hand, if the image transferred to the others is somehow different – either a little or much – from the image in your mind, it means you communicate somehow ineffectively with the others. Certainly you want to communicate with the others effectively. You want them to understand you as well as possible.

Simple words vs advanced words

When you write, you have a style of yours. The style is the way you choose words to use as well as the way you arrange the words in sentences. Talking about words used to form sentences, you have at least two choices: using simpler words or more advanced ones. You can choose one of the two choices, or you also may use simpler words but combined with some (not many) advanced ones. It is a choice, so it totally depends on yourself.
But remember, each choice has its consequence. If you choose simple words, others may understand what you write very easily without thinking too hard. On the other hand, if you choose advanced words, others – especially non native beginners – probably have to think harder to understand what you write.
For sure, it is almost impossible to always use simple words. In some occasions, you need some advanced words to precisely represent the idea in your mind. In such condition, you may choose to use the advanced words. But I suggest that you always use simple words as much as possible. Only when you have no other choice, you can use advanced words.
In addition, choosing simple words or advanced ones also depends on where you write. If you write on newspapers, popular magazines, or blogs, you’d better use simple words, because what you write will be read by people with different levels of language proficiency. You should not use advanced words – particularly technical words of a certain field of science – on those media. However, if you write on academic journal, you can use advanced words because what you write will be read by segmented, educated people. You can also use technical words if you are sure that the readers will understand them well.

Simple structure vs complex structure

The style in which you write also includes what kind of sentence structure you use. You have two choices: simple structure or complex structure. There may be the third choice: combining both of them.
In simple structure, you tend to make sentences as short as possible. The shorter the sentences are, the better it is. If you use short sentences in your essay, others will understand the essay very easily. They don’t need to think very hard. On the other hand, the others may have to think very hard if you use complex structure very much in your essay. I suggest you to use simple structure as much as possible in your essay. That way, others will enjoy what you write because they can understand it easily. Keep this in your mind.

Making an outline or not

There are mainly two steps to write. The first is creating ideas to write, and the second is writing process itself (transferring the ideas into written symbols). Some people prefer making an outline of their ideas before they write. They use the outline because the want the essay to be as systematic as possible. They want to arrange the ideas in a good logical order. Moreover, they use the outline in order not to miss any of the ideas in their mind when they are writing. In this latter case, the outline functions as an idea-reminder for the writer.
It may be easy for some experienced writers to write without any outline. However, for some beginners, it may be very difficult to write well without the outline. So, an outline is made to help a writer, either to arrange sentences as systematically as possible or to remind him what to write. Because it is only to help, you can choose to not use it if you are sure that you can write systematically and that you will not miss any of your ideas without any outline.

Re-writing

Re-writing means reading for the second time what you have written, and then correcting whatever you consider wrong or not suitable. Many experts suggest re-writing as the last step of good writing. However, there is a question. Is re-writing a must? The answer won’t be always yes. It can be no, that means you don’t have to re-write what you have written if you think what you have written is good enough.
Many experts suggest that you should write the first time without too much criticism – on grammar or other language aspects. You had better explore freely all ideas in your mind. Don’t pay attention too much to grammar or any language aspect. What you want to do is moving your pen – or typing the keypads – as quickly as possible just like water flow, following the ideas built in your mind. Don’t let the ideas stop developing due to your criticism.
They suggest you to criticize after you have finished writing all your ideas. They even strongly suggested that you criticize after some hours or on another day. They argue that some time interval will make you criticize much better.

However, some writers prefer criticizing while they are writing. They don’t wait for another time to criticize. They say that they prefer criticizing this way because it works well for them. I think how and when someone criticizes is his preference. Everyone can do whatever that works better for him.
