Walk through the doors into any real world casino and you hit the slot machines. There's a slight difference of opinion between the casino operators. It probably all started around the fire in the cave when, having stuffed themselves with dinosaur rib at the bar-b-q, they moved on to a little action with a few carved bones. But, as time progressed and money was developed, the idea of money changing hands based on a throw of the dice caught on. In this, you see all the key elements making any game popular. The concept of gambling is seductive. You place a small wager on the outcome of an event outside your ability to control. If you win, there's a big profit and this is a compelling reason to carry on playing because you believe you will win again. The second feature is the sociable nature of the playing environment. There's a crowd watching. Sometimes it's only other players but, more often, gambling is a spectator sport. This creates a community and it supports and encourages the players. Rich backers appear and bankroll the best players for a share of the expected profits. More or less any place you go on the internet, you can see goods or services you want and pay for them. Most sites accept credit cards. Those that do not, deal with the other players in the banking world to make sure the funds get where they are supposed to go. This works whether you are buying clothes for your newborn baby or hard core pornography. E-commerce is the new life blood of trade. Yet, when it comes to online gambling, something dramatic happened in the US. If you are resident anywhere else in the world, all the standard methods for transferring money work with online casinos. You can open an account using a credit card and your winnings can be transferred to any bank account you nominate. But, if you are resident in the US, the world was turned on its head by the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 (UIGEA). The history of this is revealing.

A bill dealing with security in our ports was working its way through the legislative process and, at the last moment, the internet restrictions were added. They had nothing to do with the security of ports. It was a device to slip the law through without real debate. As a result, it suddenly became illegal for any financial institution to transfer funds to an internet gambling operation except for horse racing, online lotteries and fantasy sports. So states protected their revenue streams with lotteries and the racing industry gained an edge over all their competitors. This law is probably unconstitutional but, so far, the courts have been reluctant to give clear rulings. This leave US players with real problems. No matter where the online casino is based, it's still difficult to open an account and recover winnings. So how do you get round the law?

The first option is to use eChecks. This produces an immediate electronic funds transfer between your bank account and the payee casino. They work in exactly the same way as paper checks. But a word of caution - one company providing this service was recently shut down by the Attorney General of New York. Although other companies continue to offer eChecks, this method is risky with winnings being seized in the New York court action. The alternatives are the following. A limited number of casinos including Rushmore accept American Express, bank drafts, wire transfers and checks for opening an account and making deposits. But these methods cannot be used for withdrawals. This brings us down to Central Coin, Citadel, Click2Pay, CLICKANDBUY, NETeller and others. Online casinos pick and choose which methods they accept. Alternatively, you have to set up a third party account outside the US and transfer the funds into and out of that account instead of directly to the casino.

It should not be this difficult to play your favorite casino games and there are various moves in the pipeline to encourage the lawmakers to repeal this oppressive law. While there's no constitutional right to gamble as such, this law chills the banks and achieves prohibition by the backdoor. The game is one of the simplest ever invented. The rules are few and there's no physical effort involved in playing it. You just sit, look at a few cards and make your bets. That's probably why it's become one of the most popular casino games of all time. Of course everyone knows the House has an edge. That's how it pays all the expenses for running the casino. Remember it makes no difference whether this is a casino in the real world or online. You still need people and a base. So common sense tells you that no-one beats the House unless they invest some effort. Put another way: if everyone could beat the House without breaking sweat, the casino would go out of business in a day. This produces the headline: no pain, no gain. You have to put in some study time to master the basic strategy.

So what is this strategy? Over the years, some serious math types did all the work for you. They calculated the best way to play all the card combinations and wrote them down in simple charts. If you were going to play in a real casino, you would have to learn all these rules. That saves you having to pause before every decision to check the charts. Not only would the other players around the table be less than impressed, the casino would probably suggest you leave. But playing online changes all that. You can consult the charts as often as you like before deciding which card to play. It may be slow but, if you get the strategy right for every hand, you just shifted the odds in your favor.

So what are these charts? The first gives you the rules on when to split a pair. The strategy changes depending on the value of the cards dealt to you and the value of the card you can see the Dealer holding. So it starts with the rule that you split a pair of aces no matter what the Dealer holds, and goes down to the choices when you hold a pair of 2s. The other two charts deal with hard hands and soft hands. A hard hand is when neither card is an ace and the strategy changes significantly depending on the card held by the Dealer and the table rules on when the Dealer must stand or draw. A soft hand contains an ace and is easier to play because you can always draw one more card without busting - this takes some of the pressure off the play. I started off by saying blackjack is an easy game but, like all games, you can play for fun or you can take it seriously and play to win. In this case, you are more likely to win if you learn the charts and can play the strategy without thinking. To really take on the House edge, you also have to become a card counter but that's a whole new story because it does not work in a virtual casino. For now, focus on the basic strategy and start your winning blackjack career.

There's a sad fact about playing in a casino, whether real or virtual. The operators have worked out how to play the games on offer and set the odds to favor themselves. After all, if the majority did not lose, there would be no money to pay out all the money you win. Needless to say, the casinos have invested time and money into working out every possible variation on the rules and the ways to play under them. So, if you are going to take on the House edge, you have to become as big an expert on the rules as the operators. So let's start with one of the more interesting rules which decides when you are allowed to double down. This applies when you have received your two cards. If you decide you are going to draw only one more card, the casino rules can allow you to double your initial bet. The different possibilities are to double:

on any card combination;

only when the two cards total 9, 10 or 11; or

after splitting.

Why should you double your bet? The answer is deceptively simple. You double the bet when you think you are going to beat the Dealer. That really does make sense. But because you are suddenly investing more money in playing the game and have more to lose, you need to get on board with the math. You need to know the frequency with which the Dealer is likely to go bust based on the card you can see. If the Dealer's card suggests a bust is probable, i.e. the Dealer's hand is weak, you double the bet when you have a strong hand. You are maximizing the chance of making a good profit on the hand. If you build the doubling rule into your basic strategy, you reduce the House edge. If you refuse to play the doubling rule, the House edge actually increases. This is not to claim you will win every hand when you double down. If you are on a losing streak, you could lose every doubled bet for the session. But, in the long term, you will win more than you lose if you double. If you hesitate to double the bet, it suggests you are outside your comfort zone and already playing for higher stakes than you can afford.

At the blackjack table, the Dealer is weakest when showing a card in the range 2 through 6. With a 2, the bust percentage is 35%. It rises to a 42% chance of busting with a 5 or 6. Your hand is strongest if the two card total is less than 11. Do not be thrown off the basic strategy by the casinos that allow you to add less than the original bet. Blackjack is a game for winners. Never give up the chance to double and take the maximum win against the Dealer. Adding a few dollars to the original bet but not doubling is half-hearted and cowardly.

Nasionalisme Tak Selebar Monitor Komputer

Sempat risih aja liat orang indonesia bikin blog pake bahasa inggris (bukannya gak bisa bahasa inggris!)
dimana rasa nasionalisme kita.. :P

saya rasa ini juga karena "katanya" tuntutan google adsense "masa sih"?!?
Sebelumnya pernah ngobrol2 ma member milis ini (lewat YM), saya tanya "kok isinya inggris semua?", "biar adsensenya ketrima mas, juga biar dapet earning lebih".

OH YA?!

Tulisan di atas adalah lontaran yang saya temukan di milis id-AdSense.

Saya kira, mengaitkan penggunaan bahasa Inggris (English) dengan nasionalisme endonesa adalah tindakan terburu-buru. Nasionalisme tak selebar monitor komputer.

Kalau boleh melontarkan pendapat pribadi, saya malah lebih terganggu dengan peblog (blogger) endonesa yang ketika menulis dalam bahasa Indonesia, tidak berusaha menulis dengan baik.

Blog saya sendiri berbahasa Indonesia. Kalau pun ada yang berbahasa Inggris, cuma beberapa. Padahal, blog saya juga terikut dalam program Google Adsense.

Bukan karena tak mau mengikuti --yang katanya tuntutan-- Google Adsense. Sebenarnya, keterampilan saya dalam berbahasa Inggris, sangat terbatas. Malah mungkin, luar biasa not well lah... :-D

Terlepas dari nasionalisme, tuntutan sponsor, atau keterbatasan akan Bahasa Inggris, peblog yang senasib dengan saya mungkin bisa saja belajar dari pengalaman Agus Hery, peblog dari Bandung. Melalui artikel "Blogger : Use English Subject in Post just for Adsense?" di blognya, kita bisa membaca sebuah sesuatu yang cukup menarik untuk ditiru.

Menurut Agus hery, ia biasa menggunakan Bahasa Inggris untuk Judul Pos (post title) sementara isi (content dalam Bahasa Indonesia. Tentu dengan alasannya sendiri, tetapi tegas sang pemilik blog, "tak ada kaitanya dengan program Adsense".

Saya tidak bermaksud mengikuti kebiasaan Agus Hery. Bukan karena alasan nasionalisme. Rasanya tak nyaman saja menulis dengan bahasa "lain di title, different with isi". Kacau, kan? What does you think you is? :-P

Fakta Seputar Kehidupan Penulis

Jadi, anda bermimpi menjadi penulis terkenal? Anda ingin menyelesaikan sebuah artikel di selembar kertas secepat mungkin dan melihatnya dimuat di suatu media cetak. Anda memiliki ide yang luar biasa untuk sebuah buku dan anda akan memulainya sekarang. Tapi tahukah anda bagaimana sebenarnya kehidupan riil seorang penulis? Bacalah untuk menemukan jawabannya?

Penolakan adalah bagian dari hidup. (Tulisan) anda bakal ditolak. Tak peduli seberapa bagus (tulisan) anda, seberapa ciamiknya teknik (menulis) anda, atau sedetil apapun tulisan anda. Suatu hari, anda bangun dari tidur dan menemukan penolakan (dari penerbit) melalui surat. Janganlah patah arang. Hal ini terjadi pada setiap penulis.
Penulisan ulang (rewriting) pasti terjadi. Tanpa peduli sebagus apapun kosakata yang anda pakai, sebagus apapun materi tulisan anda, pasti akan datang suatu ketika, manakala seorang editor meminta anda menulis ulang naskah anda. Sebenarnya, itu berarti sang editor menyukai karya anda, namun butuh anda memoles kembali sejumlah detail yang ia butuhkan.
Deadline pasti anda jumpai. Taat deadline merupakan bagian penting dalam karir (menulis) anda. Luput satu deadline, dapat dipastikan bahwa anda kehilangan kesempatan untuk menulis di penerbit tersebut. Waspadalah, jangan mengambil terlalu banyak (pesanan tulisan) yang tidak mampu anda rampungkan. Ini akan menurunkan reputasi anda dan membuat anda tampak tidak profesional.
Kebuntuan Penulis (Writer's Block) bukan mitos. Writer's block adalah realitas. Suatu hari anda terbangun dari tidur dan mendapati bahwa diri anda sedang tak mampu lagi menulis. Santai. Itu cuma sebuah fase. Tingkatkan motivasi anda, dan anda akan kembali pulih tanpa memakan waktu lama.
Lakukan selingan, lakukan selingan, lakukan selingan. Jika anda bekerja di rumah, anda memiliki kemudahan untuk melakukan kegiatan selingan. Anak anda butuh makanan, pakaian kotor perlu dicuci, anda butuh secangkir kopi. Dan ketika semua telah dirampungkan, telepon berbunyi. Itu mungkin telepon dari suami atau istri anda, yang mengingatkan anda agar tak lupa hal-hal yang perlu dikerjakan.
Tak dapat dilakukan tanpa "thesaurus" atau kamus. Tak peduli sebetapa bagus daftar kosakata yang anda kuasai atau betapa kocaknya gaya penulisan anda. Faktanya dalam kehidupan menulis anda membutuhkan "thesaurus". Bakal ada saatnya anda terlalu sering menggunakan kata yang sama, atau sulit menemukan ungkapan yang lebih baik. Saat itulah anda memerlukan thesaurus.
Anda tak mungkin dapat menyenangkan semua orang. Setiap orang berbeda. Lusinan orang yang akan mengapresiasi pekerjaan anda. Ada juga orang yang akan merobek karya anda dengan kritik pedas mereka. Belajarlah mengambil hal-hal baik dari hal-hal buruk.
Perlu kesabaran yang luar biasa. Banyak editor yang aneh. Para editor membutuhkan waktu mereka, dan kita butuh kesabaran kita. Jangan meminta jawaban sehari setelah kita mengirimkan pengajuan. Kesempatan membutuhkan waktu.
Uang tidak datang dengan mudah. Dalam dunia penulisan, uang tak datang semudah di dunia kerja yang lain. Anda mungkin menulis lusinan artikel setiap minggu, dan berharap banyak akan sejumlah uang akan datang darinya. Atau, anda mungkin berharap buku anda akan melampaui target yang anda perkirakan. Anda tidak pernah tahu, ini cuma dalam angan-angan, namun tidak setiap orang bisa menjadi Stephen King. Dan anda berpeluang untuk belajar menjalaninya bersama fakta bahwa tak akan ada film (movie) dibuat berdasarkan novel pertama anda.
Jalan Penulis itu panjang dan keras. Jalannya bergelombang, dan bakal ada saatnya dimana anda merasa ingin menyerah. Tapi tujuan akhir merupakan sebuah kepuasan. Jangan biarkan jalan itu menghalangi anda dari mimpi yang anda bangun. Dan, jangan pernah menyerah.

"Free-Magazine" dalam Kemasan Blog

"Haha, Kamu mulai mata duitan," komentar istri saya ketika saya sedang membangun blog ini. Pasalnya, ia membaca tag blog ini: "Blog is Money" alias "Blog adalah Uang".

"Mmm, anggap saja begitu!" Sebenarnya, dari dulu saya ingin sekali menjadi penerbit media gratisan yang biaya produksinya tak dibebankan kepada pembaca. Dibagikan gratis, cuma-cuma, begitu saja. Media seperti ini, yang umum dikenal sebagai "free magazine" sangat marak di Jakarta.

Free Magazine di Jakarta banyak ditemukan dalam format media kawasan. Disebut media kawasan karena wilayah penyebarannya memang dialokasikan pada kawasan-kawasan tertentu saja. Sebut saja misalnya kawasan Kelapa Gading. Di sini konon sekitar dua puluhan media dalam bentuk majalah dan tabloid terbit rutin meski tidak dijual.

Kalau gratis, lalu darimana dana untuk menutupi biaya produksinya. Penulis perlu dibayar, kurir perlu digaji, proses mencetak (printing) nya juga perlu uang. Jumlahnya tidak sedikit. Tentu saja biaya tersebut ditanggung pengiklan, perusahaan yang memasang iklan di media tersebut.

Di pangkuan saya saat ini ada sebuah media gratis, Free Tabloid MEDIA CINERE. Media yang disediakan sebagai "Info Komunitas Cinere dan Sisi Selatan Jakarta" ini terbit 12 halaman. Isinya? Sembilan halaman berisi iklan.

Padahal, konon menurut salah satu wartawan senior yang sekarang merintis sebuah kantor berita, dengan dua halaman iklan saja, biaya produksi tabloid semacam ini pasti tertutupi.

Kembali ke laptop, saya belum bisa membuat media gratis dalam format majalah atau tabloid. Jalan yang paling memungkinkan adalah melalui blog. Tapi selain menyajikan informasi yang berguna bagi para pembacanya, blog ini juga tak harus membuat kantong si pemiliknya terkuras. Sebab, meski tidak sebanyak yang dibutuhkan dalam menerbitkan majalah atau tabloid, ngeblog juga memakan biaya, terutama jika rutin. Paling tidak biaya mengakses internet, biaya riset untuk penulisan, dan tentu biaya kopi untuk teman begadang.

Saya percaya, dengan membangun sebuah blog yang dikhususkan untuk mengikuti program-program "monetize", cita-cita sederhana itu tercapai.

Saat menulis artikel ini saya melacak berapa banyak sumber maya yang mengandung kata monetize di dalam situs pencarian Google. Jumlahnya, 4,690,000. lebih dari empat juta tautan.

Saya sendiri sedang mencari definisi monetize itu sebenarnya apa? Dari hasil penelusuran singkat, inilah beberapa definisinya:

Hobi Membaca? Tulislah Resensi, dan Anda Dibayar!

Bagi yang suka membaca, cobalah menulis resensi kemudian kirim ke majalah atau koran. Jika dimuat, biasanya koran atau majalah akan memberi anda honor atas tulisan (resensi) tersebut. Dengan honor tersebut kita bisa membeli buku baru untuk kemudian diresensi lagi, dapat honor lagi, beli buku baru lagi, dan seterusnya berulang-ulang.

Biasanya majalah atau koran memberi batasan untuk sebuah resensi, berkisar 2 hingga 3 halaman folio atau spasi tunggal. Batasan lain mungkin adalah jenis buku, popularitas pengarang buku yang diresensi, atau gaya tulisan yang kita pakai saat menulis resensi.

Di dunia maya, ada sebuah situs yang menampung segala jenis resensi, ulasan, review atau abstract. Situs ini adalah shvoong. Uniknya situs ini tak hanya menampung resensi (review) buku. Ia bahkan menampung resensi terhadap artikel atau sebuah situs internet, malah ulasan terhadap blog kita sendiri.

Menulis resensi di sini lumayan mudah. Ada 3 pilihan berdasarkan banyak kata dalam satu resensi, yaitu 300, 600, dan 900 kata. Jadi sebuah review sederhana serta singkat sekalipun dapat dimuat di shvoong. Situs ini juga memberikan pilihan lain seandainya kita sungkan meresensi. Kita bisa menerjemahkan sebuah resensi atau abstract dari satu bahasa ke bahasa lain.

Berapa banyak honor yang diberikan oleh shvoong? Jumlahnya tergantung sebarapa sering resensi anda dibaca oleh orang lain. Makin sering, makin banyak uang yang kita dapat. Rumus kedua adalah tergantung banyaknya resensi yang kita upload. Makin banyak resensi, tentu makin besar keuntungan kita.

Dalam urusan honor yang diberikan shvoong, saya kira ada sebuah rumusan sederhana yang bisa dijadikan pegangan. Yang terpenting adalah bukan harga tetapi nilai. Pendek kata begini, katakanlah satu resensi yang cuma 300 kata dihargai hanya 1000 perak. Tapi bayangkan jika resensi yang kita tulis jumlahnya 100 resensi. Maka jumlahnya menjadi 100.000 rupiah. Bagaimana jika 1000 resensi? Bagaimana jika 1000 perak dikali 1000 resensi itu kita terima setiap bulan?

Saya sedang mencobanya program ini. Hitung-hitung sebagai latihan menulis resensi, tapi dibayar. Sekaligus juga latihan menerjemahkan.
