Google EFT Payment in Indian Publisher Announced Service Start Soon

Google recently announced that electronic funds transfer [EFT] payments for Indian publishers is coming soon, possibly by the year end.

Indian AdSense publishers have been complaining about the delay in the payments due to transit time involved in the delivery and courier of AdSense checks. Currently, Indian publishers have the option of payment via check only. Most of the time it takes around 3-4 weeks after the payment has been issued by Check to Indian publishers. Checks are issued by Google and gets delivered by BlueDart courier service. For locations that are not served by BlueDart, the courier company later on post the check via speed post. This prolongs the total transit time.

Things are about to change. AdSense has been testing out EFT payment system for Indian publishers. Recently they carried out a test payment to check if the process works fine. Google also announced that the new payment system might be available for Indian users by the year end in the month of December.

In Google Product forum, a Google employee recently answered a question about EFT payments for Indian Publishers saying

EFT will ensure that the publishers receive the payments directly in their bank accounts. In order to start receiving payments by EFT, the publishers will need to share their account numbers and IFSC codes and finally verify their accounts by sending a small test deposit.

EFT is a faster way of receiving money as compared to cheques which take almost two weeks to reach a publisher. EFT will also prove to be more convenient as the cheques issued by Google are only payable at Citibank branches and Citibank does not have many branches in India.

1) Force reboot:
Many times android users face a problem of freezing in mobile phone, in case your android phone is frozen, you can reboot it:

Just press Power Button+ Home Key + Volume up button simultaneously.

2) Quick Google Access:
Android phones is built primarily for the Internet, many of Android users don’t know that android phones provide a way by which we can access Google search in just a single click:

Press menu key and hold it for couple of seconds, it will launch the Google search.

3) Reboot Android in safe mode:
As many computers, we can also reboot Android phones in safe mode. The latest Android- Jelly Bean version provides an option to reboot in safe mode, if something goes wrong.
To reboot your android in safe mode, follow the below given instructions.

*Long press the power button
*Long press on the power off option.

Android phone will show a confirmation message about rebooting it in safe mode, if we reboot android phone in safe mode then all the 3rd party application will be disabled. These applications can again be enabled when we reboot our phone normally. This is a great Android utility in case when, one of your 3rd party application is causing trouble for you and you want to hunt it.

4) Unlock android phones by face detection:
In the jelly bean version, Android provides a way by which android phone can be unlock using face detection, to make this feature more secure, Jelly Bean version added another layer of protection in which Android phone can be unlocked only when the face is matched as well as we have to blink eyes in order to unlock phone. This is a handy USSD to get the details about battery usage, DNS check, Ping, Application time usage time and so on.

6) Move android apps to SD card:
Its good idea to install android apps in SD card, but what if you installed apps on your phone memory. Don’t worry! Android phones provide a way by which we can move our apps to SD card. To move apps to SD card, follow these steps:

Go to settings > Application settings > Manage application > Select the application, You will see the option “Move to SD card”.

7) Hard Reset and Factory reset your android phone:
Android phone can be formatted in two ways:

a) Factory reset: In factory reset, your phone is being formatted to factory level. Means all the settings will go by default and all the internal data will be deleted. To factory reset a phone dial *#*#7780#*#*.

b) Hard reset: To hard reset a phone dial *2767*3855#, this will delete all the data (including internal and External SD data) as well as settings of android phone. Don’t try this code for testing purpose, until you are not sure. It will not ask for any confirmation.

Context menu in android:
Long press on the screen, will show you additional options for customizing android phones. This context menu is somewhat similar to the right click menu of most operating systems.

9) Taking screen shots on android phone:
Android phones offer a great feature by which we can take the screen shot without using any 3rd party application. However the screen shot android tricks vary from one android version to another version.

Press the Home button + power button.
For Galaxy Nexus: Power button + volume down button.
For Galaxy Note 2 and S3: Swipe your palm on the screen to take screen shot.

10) Android Version Animation:
Go to settings > about phone > Tab repeatedly on ‘Android version’.
After sometime, the Android version will be animated

12 Steps To Become A Hacker!

Step 1: Learn To Program In C

C programming is one of the most powerful languages in computer programming. It is necessary to really master this language. This programming language was invented by Denise Ritchie in between the years 1969 and 1973 at AT&T Bell Labs. C programming will essentially help you divide the task in smaller pieces and these pieces can be expressed by a sequence of commands. Try writing some program on your own by assessing the logic.

Step 2: Learn More Than One Programming Language

When you are trying to become a hacker, it is very important to learn other modern computer programming languages such as JAVA, Perl, PHP and Python. One of the best ways to learn these is by reading books from experts.

Step 3: Learn UNIX

UNIX is a multi-tasking and multi-user computer operating system that is designed to provide good security to the systems. This operating system was developed by some employees of AT&T in Bell Labs. The best way to learn it is to get into an open-source version (e.g. centos) and install/run the same on your own. You can operate internet without learning UNIX, but it is not possible for you to be an internet hacker without understanding UNIX.

Step 4: Learn More Than One Operating Systems

There are many other operating systems apart from UNIX. Windows operating system is one of the most commonly compromised systems, hence, it is good to learn hacking Microsoft systems, which are closed-source systems.
According to the National Vulnerability Database, Microsoft operating systems have a large number of vulnerabilities.
Windows OS installers are distributed in binary, therefore, it is not easy for you to read the code. Binary code is basically the digital representation of text and data that computer understands. However, knowing how programs are written for Windows and how different applications behave on this operating system will help.

One of the recent vulnerabilities of a popular OS was that Java Web Start applications get launched automatically even if the Java plug-ins are disabled. How to be a hacker is about knowing the weaknesses of these operating systems and targeting them systematically.

Step 5: Learn Networking Concepts

The networking concept needs to be sharp when you want to be a hacker.
Understanding how the networks are created is important, however, you need to know the differences between different types are networks. Having a clear understanding of TCP/IP and UDP protocol is a must to be able to exploit the vulnerabilities on world wide web.
Understand what is subnet, LAN, WAN and VPN.
The networking commands to do a HTTP request needs to be on your fingertips. The HTTP protocol, is the gateway through which one enters the internet world. Hence, it is necessary to learn this protocol in order to break the barriers. The hackers often use the HTTP gateway to breach the security of the system and take control over it.

Apache Httpd is one of the most commonly used web servers and knowing in and out of it is going to empower you on any HTTP or other application layer protocol related endeavors.
Also Nmap is a powerful network scanning tool that is used by hackers and security professional across the world to identify vulnerable hosts. However, to effectively start using it you must understand the networking basics.

Step 6: Start Simple: Go Through Tutorials About Hacking

This is the simple and best way to start. Read as many tutorials as possible that are meant for hacking. These articles will give you insight and help you develop the attitude to be a hacker. Some tutorials will initiate you with Nmap, Nessus and SuperScan, some of the hacking programs or tools that hackers generally use. These tutorials are readily available over the internet; Both text and video tutorials are available for you to answer your question how to be a hacker.

Step 7: Learn Cryptography

As an expert hacker, you need to understand and master the art of cryptography. The technology of cryptography and encryption is very important for internet and networking. It is the practice and study of techniques that are used for secure communication in the presence of third parties. The encryption is done for various aspects of information security such as confidentiality of the data, integrity of the data and authentication. Moreover, the technology of cryptography is extensively used in ATM cards, computer passwords and e-commerce. While hacking, these encrypted codes needs to be broken, which is called decryption.
Understand various techniques used for password cracking. There are dozens of tools available to do password cracking, and using it is not hacking. To be expert at hacking its important for you to understand how to create a program that can crack a password from cypher text.

Step 8: Experiment A Lot

This is an important step for setting yourself up as an expert hacker. Setup a laboratory on your own to experiment the learning on the practical applications. A simplest lab will have your computer, however once you advance you may want to add more and more computers and required hardware for your experiments.
It is good to try experimenting on your own computers, where you can rectify if you have done any mistake. Many hackers initially start off by downloading virtual lab applications such as Oracle VirtualBox. You require at least 3 GBs of RAM and a comparatively powerful processor to carry out your hacking experiments. Setting up the virtual machine is crucial, as it will allow you to test virus, applications and different servers without affecting your own PC.
Some of the things you may need to keep in mind when doing experiments

- Keep a backup before any experiment.
- Start small and have check points.
- Know when to stop.
- Document your progress
- Keep improvising
- Automate repetitive tasks

Reading will always enhance your knowledge. Try to read as many books and articles as possible written by the experts in the field field of ethical hacking and enterprise security
Reading a lot about anything related is so important in the world of hacking that you must also consider enhancing your reading speed. If your reading speed is slow, then you may not be able to progress fast in this field. Practice speed reading techniques like skimming, chunk reading etc.
When it comes to reading a lot, it's also important to know that a majority of content on web is not worth your time. Many people use search engine tricks to attract traffic but have little value in it. If you skim through an article within seconds and decide not to read that is going to save you a lot of time for some really well researched content.

Step 10: Go Next Level: Write Vulnerability

Vulnerability of a program is the weakness of the program. It is a good approach to look for the vulnerability of an existing program and share the same with others. In this way you will have the option to collect varied opinions from different sources, enabling you to hone your current skill set.
The examples of computer vulnerabilities include memory safety violation, input validation error, privilege confusion bugs and user interface failure. For instance, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 11 had the vulnerability bug in its preview version which several hackers exploited.
Identifying a new weakness in any software is the real work any expert hackers would perform.

Step 11: Contribute To Open Source Security Projects

Contributing to an open-source computer security project is a great platform to test your skills. This is not everyone’s cup of tea. Many organizations like Mozilla and Apache offer these types of open source projects. Try to be a part of these projects and add a valuable contribution to the benefit of the community.
Participating in the open source security projects such as anti-spam, anti-virus, firewall and data removals help you augment your dexterity as a hacker. Contribute your vulnerability findings to the global vulnerability databases and give back to the community.
Remember that it does not matter if your contribution is small, as long as you participate and add value it helps.

Step 12: Continue Learning And Keep Listening To Security Talks

The key to success in the hacking career is continuous learning. Reading blogs for hacking available at sites such as hackerfactor blog and IKEA hacker blog; participating in the forums such as hackforums.net and elite hack are great ways to refresh your knowledge as a hacker. The online video forums like TED or TechTalk are good sources to know more about the emergent hacking techniques and technologies that are being deployed. The release of Windows 8 , many sites have done reviews on what the next Windows system will be like. The reviews are mostly positive, with some hailing Windows 8 as the next revolution in the technology of computer operating systems (OS). Such may well be the ambition of Microsoft, and it shouldn’t surprise time it comes at a time when Apple’s share of the OS market is rising and pitting fiercely against them.

If there’s one thing great about competition, it is that it brings out the best product between companies. I’ve read up some of the features that Microsoft’s Windows 8 will be offering, and am now both intrigued and excited for what’s to come in the full version. It will even come with a new and unique kind of user interface (UI) known as the Metro.

Here are brief descriptions to some top features you would be keen to know about:

1. Speedy Boot Time & Shut Down Time

The load and boot up speed has improved significantly over Windows’ predecessors. This is partly due to the better resource allocations to applications and the system. When compared to Windows 7 desktop CPU, Windows 8 has an even speedier boot time.

How did they improve so much over Windows 7? In one glance over your tiles, you can have access to all that you need to be notified and take action on those which are urgent.

3. Enhanced Search Functionality

8 has no search box at the bottom of the Start menu. Heck, it doesn’t even have the trademark Start menu! That doesn’t mean that there’s no convenient search function available. All you need to do is to type anything, and a search box will appear from the right and give you the results. The search capability is even stronger this time, displaying all the matching apps and files instantaneously.

You can also search within apps that utilize Windows 8′s search function. The search pane that pops out on the right of your desktop will contain the list of apps which you can conduct the search in. 4. Windows To Go like Autopilot

Of the entire list here, this is one feature that offers the most convenience to users. Windows To Go allows users to make a copy of their OS complete with their settings, wallpapers, files and even apps, into a USB thumb drive. Plugged it into another computer with Windows 8 already installed, and you can boot up the PC and make it look exactly alike the OS you normally use, with all settings intact.

How different will this be from Windows To Go? Well, Windows To Go seem to serve more as a controlled device for IT administrators to distribute to employees (with exact duplicates of Windows 8 with the same settings, wallpapers, apps, etc on thumbdrives), while Windows Live Syncing is more to allowing users to keep the basic settings and data available even if they’re away from their primary PC. We can only anticipate how the former and latter will be truly be like until they are unveiled by Microsoft in due course.

Procedure to make Bootable Pendrive using Command Line Using the Command Line

1.Plug-in your Flash Drive. First plug-in your USB stick to your USB port and copy all the content to a safe location in your hard drive .

2.Run Command Prompt as an administrator. To open a command prompt, go to the Start menu and search for CMD. Right-click on it and select Run as Administrator to use it with admin rights.

3.Using the Diskpart utility find the drive number of your flash drive. To do so, type in the following command in the command prompt: DISKPART

Running DISKPART will display the version of DISKPART you are running and the name of your PC.

Type “list disk” to see a display of all your connected disk drives. Make a note of the number assigned to your Flash drive.

4.Format the drive. Execute the following list of commands one-by-one. Make sure you replace Disk 1 with the proper Disk number from DISKPART.

select disk 1

clean

create partition primary

select partition 1

active

format fs=NTFS QUICK

assign

exit

5.Make the flash drive bootable. Use the bootsect utility that is shipped with Windows 7/Vista. To do so:

Insert the Windows 7/Vista DVD and note down the drive letter of the DVD drive. For this guide, the DVD drive is D: and the USB drive is G:.

Navigate to the directory where bootsect is found.

cd d:\boot

Use the bootsect to make the USB Drive bootable. This updated the drive with BOOTMGR compatible code and prepares it to boot Windows 7/Vista.

BOOTSECT.EXE/NT60 G:

Close the Command Prompt windows.

6Copy all files from the Windows 7/Vista DVD to the formatted USB stick. The safest and the fastest way would be to use the Windows Explorer. Open the disk, select everything, and drag it into your flash drive. This could take a few minutes to copy.

Prepare to Install

1.Change the boot order. To boot from the USB drive, you will have to set the BIOS to boot from USB first instead of the hard drive. To open the BIOS, reset your computer and hit the displayed key to enter Setup. The key varies by manufacturer, but is usually F2, F10, F12, or Del.

Open the Boot menu in your BIOS. Change the 1st Boot Device to your USB drive. Be sure that it is inserted, or you may not be given an option to choose it. Depending on your manufacturer, it may say Removable Device or list your flash drive’s model.

2.Save changes and reboot. If you set the boot order correctly, your Windows 7 or Vista installation will load after the manufacturer’s logo disappears.

3.Install Windows. The installation process will load and the Windows setup will begin. Check out our guide on installing Windows 7 for an in-depth walk through.

IRCTC Launches App on Windows 8 for e-tickets

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has launched an app for Windows 8 today.

The app developed along with Microsoft, will provide users another channel to book tickets beyond the portal. IRCTC expects the number e-ticket bookings to increase with the introduction of this app.

IRCTC Give addition options to book train E- tickets, Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) along with Microsoft has developed IRCTC App for Windows 8, which will facilitate users with a new channel of booking e—tickets in addition to the existing portal.

You can download the app for you Windows 8 Phone from here. Yo will not be able to use the app between 8AM and 12PM to make bookings.

To use the app, you must first generate a TPIN by logging onto www.irctc.co.in. The TPIN will be generated for your registered phone number and the bookings should be made through the registered phone number.

With the launch of IRCTC App on Windows 8 for train travellers, the booking of e-tickets is expected to increase considerably.

Today, with PC sales slipping and tablets rising, it’s starting to look like a necessary step taken a few years too late. While manufacturers are clearly ready to sell touch-enabled computers, their efforts aren’t being matched by Microsoft, which has failed to provide an operating system consumers can love. Or, for many, even like.

There’s irony to be found in this turn of events, as Windows 8 was meant to avoid this exact situation. Redmond’s top management, after what appeared to be a period of denial, eventually realized that giving touch the middle finger would force some consumers to purchase Android and OS X tablets by default. But Microsoft’s delay, and its previous baggage, drove the company to craft a compromise solution. Consumers are buying OS X and Android tablets even more frequently, and often because Windows 8 isn’t up to par.

The only solution to this mess is a quick recovery, and CEO Steve Ballmer acknowledged this both at Build 2013 and with Microsoft’s recent re-organization. Windows 8.1, slotted for release less than a year after Windows 8 launched, could be proof that Microsoft truly understands its problems and seeks to reinvigorate itself. Or, it could be a Band-Aid applied to a wound the company doesn’t fully comprehend.

We’ve spent some time with the preview version of Windows 8.1, and here’s what we think so far…

The Start Button is back, the Start Menu isn’t

Windows’ greatest challenge is dealing with previous success. Every significant change forces millions of users across the globe to adjust, and they’re often vocal about their disapproval. Microsoft’s decision to kill the Start menu, though bold, has been met with protest from both consumer and enterprise users, so the company has partially relented. The Start button is back; the Start menu isn’t.Okay, yes, there is a menu that can be opened from Start, but let’s be real; it’s not the Start Menu you’re looking for. All it amounts to is a context menu with a few important functions. Instead of returning to the old ways, Windows 8.1 attempts to merge function of the Start Menu into the new UI design through a feature called the “apps view.” Accessible either by swiping down from the Start screen or by activating the Start button (if the user customizes their settings), the apps view is a simple grid of small, Metro-style icons. Users can even boot directly to the desktop, bypassing the Start screen entirely. But don’t be fooled; this doesn’t mean you’ll be able to enjoy Windows 8.1 as if it were just Windows 7 with a few extra features. All of the other Metro UI elements, from the revised settings menu to the charms bar to the new (and improved!) search, remain. While the Start button’s return does make life a little easier for the desktop user, it’s a difference in tone instead of a difference in hue.

Apps view is half-baked

Unfortunately, apps view does little to unify the jarring difference between Windows desktop apps and Metro apps, a problem driven home by Internet Explorer. Windows 8.1 devices, like those before them, essentially come with two versions of the browser: one for desktop, and one for touch. You’d expect that desktop version to appear in the apps view, but instead only touch is available. To launch Internet Explorer for desktop you must open the program from the taskbar, find it in Explorer, or use Search.

To make matters worse, apps view attempts to automatically populate the menu drags in a lot of unwanted junk. While Windows 8 apps appear properly, desktop apps are often recognized along with many unessential but related files. For example, the operating system automatically displayed not only SiSoft Sandra (the software we use to test processor performance) but also twenty other non-executable files found in its folder. What a mess!

We also can’t find a way to remove these files from the apps view without deleting them. Only Windows 8 apps can be properly removed by long-tapping them and then clicking uninstall, the same process that’s used to remove those apps from the Start screen. We hope Microsoft will resolve this before release; if it doesn’t, apps view will be all but useless.

All of these problems make the new apps view a terrible Start menu replacement. Third-party companies in the business of resurrecting Start can breathe a sigh of relief.

Two steps forward for personalization

With the apps view sunk, many users may return to the Start screen instead. Here, Microsoft has improved both the aesthetics and function of personalization. Though the changes aren’t revolutionary, they’re appreciated. Visual customization now comes through a variety of patterns and colors that can be customized to your personal preferences. This addition is nice to have now that the desktop is no longer prominent, and the process of personalization couldn’t be easier. Users can now use their desktop background as a Start screen background, too.

Windows 8.1 also adds Large and Small tiles, the former taking up as much space as four regular tiles, and the latter taking up a quarter of the same. This simple change significantly enhances user customization; indeed, a user on a desktop machine might make the new “apps view” largely irrelevant through obsessive use of small tiles.

Unfortunately, these minor improvements are soured by a small step back. To move tiles, users must now long-tap to “select” the tile, then tap again and drag to move it. Previously, tiles could simply be moved with a tap-and-drag motion. While the new method enables extra editing features, it’s also less intuitive and feels strange after nine months using a different process.

Searching for a unified experience

Microsoft made search a prominent feature of Windows 8 but strangely split it up into three separate categories, a decision that may have looked good on paper but felt odd in actual use. Microsoft unified search in Windows 8.1. There’s now just one field, and it’s used to search apps, settings and the Web by default (users can narrow the search if desired.) Search also automatically suggests related Web searches automatically.

Besides unification, Microsoft also added a “Smart Search,” which automatically builds an attractive, Metro-UI result out of data pulled from Bing. Smart Search includes result thumbnails and, when possible, will pull in location data, videos, apps, and more. For example, searching for restaurants often brings the Maps app up as a result, and when opened from search, the Maps app automatically shows relevant local results. In some cases, Search will even create a beautiful spread with portraits, maps, weather, and other data, though this only occurs with the most popular and common keywords.

All of this makes for an experience that’s simple, attractive and “just works” in a way other Windows 8.1 features should envy. However, the experience is absolutely refined for touch rather than the desktop, which may frustrate users who prefer a keyboard and mouse.

Shortly after its Windows 8.1 reveal, Microsoft announced that Web search results served via Bing will include advertisements. While this could be a distraction, we didn’t notice any ads during our use, though it may be that the “on” switch hasn’t been flipped yet.

Improved ‘split view’ still so-so for multi-tasking

Multi-tasking is a feature that Microsoft has always made hay over, comparing itself (favorably, of course) to devices like the iPad which can only run one app at a time. Windows 8.1 attempts to broaden this gap by taking split view a step further, allowing the use of numerous apps on devices with large displays and customization of each app’s size. Even the desktop can be opened in split view.

This feature exists in Windows 8.1, and it’s not available on Android or the iPad. What’s arguable, however, is split view’s utility. Not all apps opened in this way are actually useful, and opening split view can be a pain, particularly for those users lacking touch. Neither concern is at all addressed by the new operating system.

And, if you’re using a laptop with a display resolution of 1366 x 768 or lower, you won’t even be able to access more than two apps at a time, which means the split view tweaks are of minimal use to consumers who own an average 15.6-inch (or smaller) laptop.

App store gets revamp but is still filled with junk

The Windows 8 Store is one of the operating system’s greatest failures. Setting up a storefront with some apps and a few basic features is just not enough. To be great, an app store must curate, tailor, and present. The original Windows Store did none of that well. In response, Microsoft has thrown out the old Store interface and started anew. Unlike the previous incarnation, which was organized via generic categories, the new Store takes a more personal approach. Featured apps are brought to the foreground along with personalized recommendations based off past purchases. Everything looks coherent, and the junky apps that plagued the previous Store are less obvious.

But they’re still there. In the prominently featured “Popular Now” section, for example, we found an app called “FACEBOOK!” Yep – in all caps, with an exclamation point at the end. This was flanked by “MSN Touch” in the New Releases section, an app that’s actually not made by Microsoft, though it has no trouble using its logo and iconography.

In the categories, which are now hidden in a swipe-down menu at the top of the screen, little has changed. Social is still dominated by paid third-party Facebook apps, Photo is still dominated by “Sexy Anime Cosplay Girls Daily,” and Security is still populated by anti-malware apps of dubious origin.

The new Store is undoubtedly a step in the right direction, but this is merely a move towards the proper path rather than the last step in the journey. Major improvements are still needed to make the Windows Store a success.

Internet Explorer 11

Internet Explorer 11 adds the support for permanent tabs, support for infinite tabs, some general performance enhancements and … that’s about it. Sure, there’s a bit more, but most of the improvements (such as WebGL support) are not the kind of thing a user will immediately notice, nor are they revolutionary. That’s the downside of a faster development cycle. We are getting new versions of Internet Explorer, but the difference between each has become vanishingly small.

And that’s too bad, because Internet Explorer could, as always, use some help. The browser still feels incredibly slow next to its major contemporaries (Chrome and Firefox). Worse, it remains split in half like the rest of Windows. There’s the desktop version, which works better with sites like Google Docs, and the touch version, which is better for on-the-couch browsing. Each version launches from its own executable, and there’s no way to transfer tabs between them.

Other tweaks and changes

One change that’s sure to anger some users is the need for an online account if Windows 8.1 is installed on a system with an active Internet connection. Official word is that support for local accounts will be part of the Windows 8.1 full release, but it’s unclear how obvious this will be during installation – based on the wording of Microsoft PR, it could even be an after-installation option. The justification, as always, is that online connectivity enhances the experience. SkyDrive is the best example, and it’s featured more prominently than ever before. Many apps can link up to SkyDrive to store data, which in turn makes it possible to share that data with another Windows device, be it a PC or Windows Phone. Users will also notice that the Libraries once again appear as folders (though they appear to act as libraries), and SkyDrive is among them. SkyDrive can also be accessed via a Metro App.

Other changes include a new “top settings” view in the Settings menu, minor tweaks to File Explorer, the ability to use Skype from the local screen, improved portrait support, and refinements to apps like Xbox Music and Mail. All of this is appreciated, but it’s difficult to notice at first and not exceptional. If you’ve used Windows 8 before, you’ll probably like what Microsoft has done with Xbox Music. But users coming from Windows 7 or another operating system won’t be impressed.

Windows 8.1 is still Windows 8

This first revision of Windows 8 takes several steps in the right direction. We’re happy to see the Start button is back, but not merely copied from Windows 7. We also like the improved personalization options, love the new search function, and appreciate the small tweaks that make Windows 8.1 a smoother, more approachable operating system. Microsoft does seem to understand many of its problems and is working to resolve them.

However, we’re worried by what appears to be continual half-hearted execution. Apps view is a great idea and looks beautiful, but it doesn’t work well. Internet Explorer remains woefully behind the alternatives. And the Store still contains far too much junk. Microsoft is still a long way from producing a version of Windows 8 that users will want to own.

Top 3 Android security apps tp Protect yours Mobiles

The subject of security of the Android platform is far from straightforward. There’s some debate about whether you really need antivirus apps on your smartphone. The majority of Android security apps are actually packages that include a host of other tools from contact filtering to remote lock or wipe. We decided to take a look at the top three Android security apps and find out what they do.

Avast! Mobile Security

As a genuinely free app for the Android platform, Avast! Mobile Security is offering an impressive range of tools. It has antivirus protection, it scans your apps to provide details on what they are doing, and it has a Web shield that scans URLs for malware.

There are various additional tools in the package and the best of the bunch is the anti-theft component. The app is actually based on an old app called Theft Aware which Avast acquired. The anti-theft feature is hidden and allows you to remote control your smartphone using SMS. So if you lose your phone, you can remotely lock it, locate it, or wipe it. You can make it play a siren sound, lock down the SIM card, and prevent USB debugging as well. It’s a comprehensive solution for theft protection.

If you have a rooted device then there’s also a firewall that allows you to control network traffic. You can block access to Wi-Fi or the network for specific apps which is handy for security and potentially saving on battery juice as well.

According to the latest AV-Test report of 22 popular Android security apps, Avast is a solid option with an overall detection rate of 98 percent. Although it has fallen down the charts to joint fifth overall, compared to last year’s report which named it in first place, the extra functionality (including the anti-theft tools and a firewall for rooted devices) still make it worth considering.

The fact this app is completely free, has a wide range of features, and offers protection for rooted devices, makes it the obvious choice right now. If you’re looking for a security solution for your Android smartphone, this is the app to get. Avast Marketing Director, Milos Korenko, has assured us that “There might be a paid version in the future but that won’t have an impact on the free version. It will continue to be available and loaded with features.”

Lookout Security & Antivirus

As one of the earliest entries into the Android security field Lookout has an impressive user base. There is a completely free version which offers antivirus and scheduled scanning. There is also a locate function for lost or stolen devices, the ability to activate an alarm, and the option to track your phone online via the Lookout website.

Another handy feature that Lookout provides is the ability to backup contacts online and restore them to your existing device or a new one.

If you are prepared to splash out $3 per month or $30 for a year you can secure the premium version for use on two Android smartphones. Extra features include safe browsing, remote lock and wipe, privacy reports on apps, and advanced backup which includes photos and call history.

The AV-Test report also rates Lookout Security & Antivirus in the top tier for malware detection rates with 99 percent detected. It is ranked second overall, taking into account protection, usability, and additional functions.

The free version of Lookout should provide enough security for most users. If you are really looking for antivirus protection rather than theft-related features or backup options then Lookout is a great choice.

TrustGo Antivirus & Mobile Security

Here’s a really comprehensive Android security solution that’s available for free. It has a standard security scanner for on-demand or scheduled scans to uncover and remove malware. It also supports secure Web browsing to protect you from dodgy downloads and phishing scams. The list goes on with a system manager to help you manage data, memory, and battery usage, so you can improve your device’s performance.

One of the most innovative features is the secure app search. The vast majority of malware problems are related to users downloading and installing dubious apps or updates. The secure app search protects against this, even if you do go outside the Play Store to find apps. There’s also a privacy guard, a backup option, and anti-theft tools for locating a missing phone and remotely wiping it.

TrustGo scored a stunning 100 percent detection rate in AV-Test’s malware test. It was also named in first place overall thanks to a combination of protection, usability, and a host of tempting extras.

You may not have heard the name before, but it’s certainly fitting, because this is a product you can trust.

Idea Cellular data ARPU for 3G users increases to Rs 105 in Q4 from Rs 97 in Q3

Idea Cellular is giving special thrust to 3G networks as its data ARPU for 3G users has increased to Rs 105 in Q4 from Rs 97 in Q3.

Idea Cellular says the blended 2G plus 3G (data ARPU) is Rs 55, up by Rs 3 over the last quarter.

The data contribution as a percentage of service revenue has improved by 2.1 percent from 4.5 percent in Q1 to 6.6 percent in Q4.

The 3G device penetration in Idea Cellular network increased to 8 percent of its 121 million EoP base till March 2013.

Idea Cellular’s 3G revenue growth is primarily driven by its cost effective smartphone strategy. Around 10 million of Idea Cellular customers own 3G phones. The 3G device penetration has helped the company to increase 3G active base to 5.1 million in Q4 FY 2013 with the highest net addition of one million during the latest quarter.

How 3G data is growing

In the fourth quarter, data ARPU for 3G active subscriber has increased to Rs 105 against Rs 97 in Q3 FY 2013, while the usage per 3G active data subscriber has slightly declined at 608 Megabyte per subscriber from 628 MB in Q3.

“Idea 3G network expansion program remains on track with additional 1595 3G sites added during the quarter. On an overall basis the company now has rolled out 17,140 3G sites in the 10 of the service areas, where Idea won spectrum in 2010 auction,” said Himanshu Kapania, MD of Idea Cellular.

While voice customers VLR increased 8.3 million net adds, incremental data customer growth was comparative at 4.5 million net additions in Q4. In the fourth quarter, Idea Cellular posted the highest data subscriber growth as EoP base of data users, blended for 2G and 3G, has increased to 26.2 million.

Increased data subscribers helped to expand data volume by 13.8 percent on a sequential quarterly basis to 11.4 billion megabytes from 10 billion megabytes in Q3 FY 2013.

Idea Cellular’s 3G reach

There are several other factors that contribute to Idea Cellular’s major expansion plans focusing on 3G.

Idea Cellular serves 4,083 towns and 15,348 villages with its own 3G high-speed data HSPA plus network, besides additional presence in 10 circles on the 3G ICR arrangement.

In last four quarters, the daily data volume for Idea has exploded from 78.8 million megabytes per day in Q1 FY 2013 to 126 million megabytes in Q4, up 61 percent within the four quarters.

“The power of pervasive Internet is slowly but surely entering the lives of Indians beyond the metros, beyond few knowledge workers, to masses. This is helping society transition from an off-line personal interactive world to a beautiful emerging online social age,” Idea Cellular CEO said.

The blended ARMB from EDGE users on GSM platform and HSPA users on 3G platform has improved 9.5 percent. The ARMB in Q4 increased to 33.9 paisa per MB, up by 2.9 paisa per MB from 31 paisa in Q3. The sequential quarterly revenue growth for data is 24.6 percent.

Mobile data alone now contributes to 6.6 percent to Idea’s service revenue.

Idea Cellular’s 3G smartphone Focus

Recently, Idea Cellular launched three new Idea branded 3G smart phones Zeal, Aurus-2 and Whiz. Zeal is a budget 3G Smartphone at Rs 5,300. Aurus-2 is another entry level 3G Smartphone at Rs 6,490 with latest Android operating system, Jelly Beans and a high speed 1 GHz processor.

“We are committed to develop the broadband wireless market and higher adoption of 3G smart phones is key to the growth of high tech 3G for masses. Company believes that it has a role to augment the effort of existing handset manufacturers by expanding distribution of affordable smart phones especially across Idea 3G spectrum markets,” Idea Cellular MD said.

Idea is going to rock the 3G space as its Capex (Capital expenditure) for the current fiscal is Rs 3,500 crore.

Micromax Canvas 4: When Nokia, Apple, Samsung failed to innovate cost effectively

First, Micromax, India’s #1 handset maker, dared to invent Canvas 4 with a number of features. I cannot compare with the financial muscle of Samsung when I compare Micromax’s innovations.

Samsung invests in marketing more than R&D. See the impact to Samsung S4 smartphone in the latest quarter.

After all, Micromax, born in India, is just a 5-year old phone brand and 1.5-year old smartphone maker in India. But it is taking on the mighty phone makers from abroad.

India’s #1 handset maker Micromax has 19.3 percent market share in the Indian smartphone market. Karbonn is in the third position with 8.6 percent share. The Korean consumer electronics giant Samsung has 40.7 percent market share in Q1 and is leading the market.

Thanks to the innovation of Indian phone brands, major foreign handset makers such as Apple, BlackBerry, Sony, LG, Nokia are not part of the top three smartphone vendors in India, according to CMR’s India Monthly Mobile Handsets Market Review.

Second, Micromax says Canvas 4 is targeted at the Indian youth. Youth does not mean the handset maker is targeting 15-30 age range. The new phone is for people with an attitude. The latest phone is for both business professionals and individuals.

The strategy of Micromax Canvas 4 reflects the pre-booking for the latest smartphone. 11,500 is the pre-booking orders when the company did not even announce its features and specifications. 11,500 phones were booked in less than one week. The company plans to bring more phones — both 3G and 4G — in coming months. It will not rely completely on Android phones as there are plans for Windows 8 as well.

Canvas 4 combines great hardware and loads of great software features that make the device a great enabler for consumers, according to Micromax.

Deepak Mehrotra, CEO, Micromax, said: “We are strengthening our promise of offering great service to millions of Micromax consumers across the country. With Canvas 4, we are introducing a new challenge for ourselves to build on our promise for service excellence, ‘either we deliver or we pay’.”

WordPress has Release 3.5.2. New Version .

This is the second maintenance release of 3.5, fixing 12 bugs. This is a security release for all previous versions and we strongly encourage you to update your sites immediately. The WordPress security team resolved seven security issues, and this release also contains some additional security hardening.

The security fixes included:

Blocking server-side request forgery attacks, which could potentially enable an attacker to gain access to a site.
Disallow contributors from improperly publishing posts
