Create bootable USB drives the easy way

Rufus is a small utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys/pendrives, memory sticks, etc.

It can be especially useful for cases where:

you need to create USB installation media from bootable ISOs (Windows, Linux, EFI, etc.)

you need to work on a system that doesn’t have an OS installed

you need to flash a BIOS or other firmware from DOS

you want to run a low-level utility

Despite its small size, Rufus provides everything you need!

Oh, and Rufus is fast. For instance it’s about twice as fast as UNetbootin, Universal USB Installer orWindows 7 USB download tool, on the creation of a Windows 7 USB installation drive from an ISO (with honorable mention to WiNToBootic for managing to keep up). It is also marginally faster on the creation of Linux bootable USB from ISOs (1).
A non exhaustive list of Rufus supported ISOs is also provided at the bottom of this page (2).
Finally, please remember that once formatted, your drive is still usable as before to transfer data: it doesn’t have to be dedicated for DOS or ISO installation only.

checkout http://rufus.akeo.ie/ for more information.

Download: http://rufus.akeo.ie/downloads/rufus_v1.3.2.exe

Phishing Email from PayPal – Or not!

Today, we have received an email, let us call it a ‘Phishing email from PayPal’ and we are sure that the sender wishes, or prays that we click on the link they desperately ask us to click on. When you read through the “Phishing Email from PayPal” it will look authenticate to you but really, and why is that? Because PayPal will not email you telling you that someone has attempted to access your PayPal account using wrong password several times and from different computer. Again, the “Phishing Email from PayPal” looks authenticate till you hoover on the link the sender is asking you to click on. Please note that the to other links, ‘log in’ and ‘update your preferences’ look legit but still, we do not recommend to click on any link in the email. The sender’s email is: support@paypal.com <– It is okay to list a legit email account because they do not expect you to respond to the email but to actually click on the link or button.

Easy step to take to avoid phishing email from PayPal or from any other entity:

If you receive such emails and you are not sure what to do, instead of clicking on the included link in the email, open you favorite browser and go directly to PayPal, you bank,

Always question the link in the email even if it comes from a friend, a family member, the payroll department of your employer, etc…

Below is the email in question.

==========

We have recently determined that different computers have tried logging into your PayPal account, and multiple password failures were present before the logons.

Until we can collect secure information, your access to sensitive account features will be limited. We would like to restore your access as soon as possible, and we apologize for the inconvenience. However, if you are the rightful holder of the account, click on the link below, fill the form and then submit as we try to verify your identity.

Please click the “confirm your account” link below.

Confirm your account

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your assistance in helping us maintain the integrity of the entire PayPal system.

Thank you for using PayPal!
PayPal Support

====================

When you hoover on the ‘Confirm your account’ link, you can see the link is being directed to www.payfor****** <—- removed so no one clicks on it

Below is a picture of the actual email

We just received another phishing email and this time, the sender’s name was ‘cases@ffiec.gov’with the following content:

========= START EMAIL OF EMAIL BODY =======
This letter citatory is meant to make aware of file No. 11483-35 which is opened and under disquisition with FFIEC following a formal accusation of your Financial Institution regarding suspect financial activity on your account.
A hard copy of this summons will be delivered to your business address.
Our institution will forward information to competent government agencies following this complaint.
Information and contacts regarding your Lawsuit file No. can be found at
Lawsuit Number: 11483-35
Maintained by
Federal Financial Institution Examination Council
Sean Sanchez

========= END OF EMAIL EMAIL BODY =======

[wp_ad_camp_1]

Of course, we are not ones that will just click a link on any email we receive, especialy emails similar to the above.

More about the Phishing email from cases@ffiec.gov

The ‘Lawsuit Number: 11483-35’ was linked to the URL “poiskzapchastey.ru/casechk.html”

Upon researching for any phishing emails like this one, we did not find any, therefore, we proceeded to the actually FFIEC website and were able to find their ‘SPAM/Phishing ALERT’ page were they state that during the summer of 2011, phishing, or fraudulent emails were sent under the following email addresses:

“Inform@ffiec.gov”
“Office@ffiec.gov”

They pointed out that the email body wording varied but all are malicious.

As stated on their page, the FFIEC does not send any such emails and is not affiliated with these messages nor their email addresses or ads.

They also go further by recommending to contact the proper authorities and alert them of the suspicious email, advise everyone not to open any attachment or click on any link. The have included the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) link, which is www.consumer.gov/articles/1015-avoiding-identity-theft and the FTC phone number 1-877-IDTHEFT (1-877-438-4338).

We also strongly stress that everyone should follow the recommended actions and remind them of the following #1 tip to deal with similar emails.

If you are not expecting any email from someone like a friend, colleague, etc, do not open the email nor click on the link. Even if you receive an email from a friend, family member that you were not expecting, take a moment to contact them and ask them if they have sent you the email.

Chances are they are not aware of the email you received. Please note that their computer might also be infected without their knowledge and it is possible that the infection is calling home or doing exactly what it is supposed to do when you are not using your computer.

If you have already clicked on the link or suspect that your pc is infected with a virus, spyware or key logger, please visit our amorca.com website or check our Virus removal Reading PA page or contact us at 484.220.1888 for assistance.

Bye Bye Linksys… Nice to meet you Asus

In this topic, I will be discussing the below routers:

ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router

Linksys WRT320N

Linksys E4200

I owned a Linksys WRT54G, a Linksys WRT320N, worked with Linksys E4200 and now, I have been using the ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router for several months and guess what?…

I have been very happy with my ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router and I am not going back to any Linksys products because it seems that now, he care from about the look then the performance and reliability. Please note that I am not going to talk about the Linksys WRT54G for it served me well.

Why switching from Linksys to Asus Routers?

While using the Linksys WRT320N router, I faced disconnect and poor bandwidth problems for months. To troubleshoot the problem, I decided to switch to another Cable modem than the Comcast provided modem. I got the Motorola Surfboard SB6121 and set it up with the Linksys WRT320N and guess what?, unfortunately, the problem persisted, therefore, I concluded that the problem was not with the Comcast provided cable modem. Please note that I am still going to highly recommend using the Motorola Surfboard SB6121 over the Comcast provided cable modem.

I proceeded to purchase the ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router and as soon as I received it, I set it up with the Comcast provided cable modem – just for troubleshooting purposes, and my disconnect and poor bandwidth problems were gone.

Decided to remove the Comcast provided cable modem and use the Motorola Surfboard SB6121 with my new baby named “ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router” and headed over to speedtest.net for testing purposes and guess what?, The Download increased by 15Mbps. So I went from 16Mbps using the Comcast provided cable modem with ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router to 35Mbps when I switched to the Motorola Surfboard SB6121 modem.

Working with Linksys E4200 router

A customer called one time and asked us to setup a wired and wireless network in his big house and wanted the Linksys E4200 router. We could not argue with the customer and the Linksys E4200 was fairely new then, therefore, we did not provide our opinion about the Linksys E4200 router to our customer for we have not yet worked with that modem then.

A week later, the wired/wireless network was setup with 3 Linksys E4200 routers and everything was fine but then, the customer called complaining of disconnection and heat problems. Changing some settings such as the UPnP Media Server, etc… but that did not resolve the issue. Do a search on ‘Linksys E4200 Disconnect’ or just Linksys E4200′ and you will get plenty of users complaining of the same Disconnection and heat problem.

Look over Performance – Which one is it

A lot of user prefer getting a good looking item without doing any research. Some prefer a router that looks cool, no Antennas and one that they can just put it somewhere in the living room and still blend in and look cool.

Others have no problem with a router that actually has an antenna or more as long as they get the speed and good performance. At Amorca Computer and Web Solutions, we ask the customer the above question and see what the customer says. Most of the time, any customer that selects a good looking router will change their mind after we explain to them the Pros and Cons of getting the ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router instead of the Linksys WRT320N, or Linksys E4200. Or any good router with Antennas.

[wp_ad_camp_1]

Not sure why Linksys changed the trend and going from Routers with Antennas to the ones without antennas. Routers with no Antennas usually have their wireless strength, including their speed, drop quickly. There is often a downside when putting the design over function.

Should I purchase the ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router?

We are not saying to go ahead and get the ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router instead of a Linksys router. All we are saying that if you are in the market of purchasing a new router and you are aiming for speed and performance, go with a good brand router with Antennas instead of a good looking one with no antennas.

At Amorca Computer and Web Solutions, we have been happier since we got our ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router.

Not sure which router to get, contact us at 484.220.1888 and we will be more than happy to recommend one for you.

Again, the routers that I have discussed in this topic are below. Please note that since I did not have issues with the Linksys WRT54G, I have not fully discussed about it.

ASUS RT-N66U Dual-Band Wireless-N900 Gigabit Router

Linksys WRT320N

Linksys E4200

I hope you will enjoy this topic as much as I enjoyed writing it and if there is anything that you would like to add to the ‘Linksys vs Asus Routers’ topic, please do not hesitate to do so by writting a comment.

OK. I have received another email promising me an income of $3000/month just to open the package, inspect the package and verify if the content has been damaged or not, repack the package and ship the package back directly to the client (recipient) destination. Now… Is it possible for someone to actually do almost nothing and receive $3000/month?. Below is the email I received and my response is listed under ‘my response’.
INTERNATIONAL EXPRESS UK SCAM UPDATE – 4/25/2012

One of our visitor has emailed us regarding the same above scam attempt. Please read below what he/she had to say. Note that, as per his request, we have removed his/her name.

Hi Amed A– please do not publish my name in the report– but so far I have also emailed what is known as the extended header info from the phisher-person who emailed me impersonating the company to security at Career Builders.

So… below is for the most part what I sent them:

*************************************************

Hello

I just spoke with Leslie in your IT office and she gave me this address. Yesterday, for awhile I was duped into thinking I was getting an offer to pursue a job from a company called INTexpress. All the information I have is below. And in it you will see that they use Career Builder as the source of the resume in order to make this offer.

Last night, I checked into this. It appears to be a classic case of phishing. Four items of record that prove they are scamming the people who are job searching, and I am sure there are more:

The email address of the ‘company’ HR person is not from a company server, as all large companies use, but from gmail. ( intexpress.hr3@gmail.com)

The documents they provided point to 1 existing and one non-existing URL for the company’s UK branch. There is a UK phone number I did not try.

I spoke with INTexpress, the actual company, and they have received calls from others about this also, and I sent them documentation at their request.

The sender looking for information does not know I am skeptical yet, and replied to my second reply, as I was duped for awhile and sent contact but not financially dangerous information to. However I suspect they may.

Attached is the sample recruitment form sent so far. I expect they will want even more potentially damaging information. Below I have the emails received so far, where Career Builder is mentioned as the source. This is what I sent to the company (INTexpress) being impersonated.

Thanks,

[Name Removed as requested]

*****************************************************

Upon reflection, it does not make a great deal of sense that your company would

be represented by an employee that uses a gmail address instead of your own company server. There are a few things that do not make too much sense in this. (Note I am pasting 2 emails below with one attachment that I was sent)

Thank you.

Below is the screenshots of the pdf attachment received by our visitor from ‘International Express UK’

Look at the Stamp again more closely. Do you notice anything? How do you spell ‘United Kingdom’ again?

Windows 8

Thanks to the software giant Microsoft, Windows 7 users, including companies’ IT department, we will not enjoy our regular dose of service packs. We all have been within for the release of a Windows 7 service pack (SP2) but from what we heard, we can keep on waiting for SP2 that will be MIA (missing in action).

The reason of no Windows 7 SP2?

We don’t really have to wait for Microsoft to tell us why it won’t be releasing the Windows 7 SP2 but we can all read between the line. Please note that Microsoft has not yet commented on the rumor about ‘No SP2 for you!” but, again, we can strongly guess that it is due to new Microsoft OS, Windows 8.

[wp_ad_camp_1]

Is it a conspiracy to move to Windows 8?

We can all guess the reason why Microsoft will not release a SP2 for Windows 7 and our guess my end up being a good one. Let us assume, for a moment, that you are Microsoft and you just release a brand new OS (Windows 8) that is not holding ground with most of users that are used to the old faithful and trusted ‘Start menu’ and we don’t blame them.

Forcing the move to Windows 8

Some of us don’t like changes especially when someone is trying to force you into something totally new to you. Some don’t like having to learn a new OS (Operating System) feel and landscape.

We are not saying that Windows 8 is bad but it would’ve been nice if Microsoft had just left the old ‘Start’ menu alone with Windows 8 and its quite good performance.
