Supercars are a rare breed. They have the ability to turn the heads of the most jaded of automotive enthusiasts and seemingly defy the laws of physics. The 2012 Audi R8 certainly accomplishes both, but it distinguishes itself from some past and present supercars by providing excellent performance without the sacrifices that other ultrahigh-performance cars require.

First and foremost, the R8 is pretty easy to drive. Aided by precise steering, a decent ride quality, good outward visibility and comfortable seats, the R8 is a supercar you could drive every day if you wanted. It also comes with all-wheel drive, giving it an advantage in terms of traction. While its effortless nature can make it seem a bit less involving than rear-wheel-drive competitors, there's something to be said for the reassurance of having AWD when the roads are wet.

For that rare individual who is willing to give up some comfort in the name of performance that the anything-but-standard V8- and V10-powered R8s deliver, there's a new limited-edition GT model. The R8 GT is powered by the same 5.2-liter V10 used in the R8 5.2 models, but it has more power and a lighter curb weight. Less is definitely more in this case, as the GT will set you back an additional $50,000 on top of the R8 5.2, and that's assuming you can even acquire one, as there are only 90 examples destined for U.S. sales. You'll also be surrendering some refinement, as sound insulation has been reduced and the ride is quite a bit stiffer.

In our opinion, the V8-powered R8 4.2 is actually the pick of the litter. Its capabilities are still far beyond those of most mortals. And starting at about $115,000, it represents a relative bargain in the supercar realm. Of course, there are some drawbacks, and they apply to the entire R8 lineup. Cargo space is limited, making the R8 a poor road trip choice. Around town, the R tronic automated manual transmission is unforgivably clunky, and the outdated navigation system interface will have you wishing Audi's newer electronics suites made it over to the R8.

Even with these drawbacks, though, the 2012 Audi R8 still shines brightly among other exotics. And really, there isn't a loser in the bunch. Whether you're talking less expensive or similarly priced models like the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, Nissan GT-R or Porsche 911, or higher-end exotics like the Ferrari 458 Italia, Lamborghini Gallardo, McLaren MP4-12C and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, it's pretty much impossible to go wrong.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2012 Audi R8 is a two-seat exotic supercar available in 4.2 Coupe, 4.2 Spyder, 5.2 Coupe, 5.2 Spyder and GT 5.2 Coupe trim levels.

Standard equipment on the 4.2 Coupe includes 19-inch wheels, adaptive suspension dampers, cruise control, automatic xenon headlights, LED running lights, automatic wipers, automatic climate control, heated 10-way power seats (with four-way power-adjustable lumbar), leather and faux suede upholstery, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, Bluetooth and a seven-speaker sound system with six-CD changer, auxiliary audio jack and satellite radio. The Convenience package adds hill-start assist, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, power-folding and auto-dimming mirrors and interior storage nets. Also optional are LED headlights, carbon-ceramic brakes, a fully leather-upholstered interior, a navigation system, iPod interface and a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.

The 4.2 Spyder adds an electrically powered soft top and a retractable rear window that doubles as a wind deflector. The R8 5.2 Coupe and Spyder add a V10 engine, different suspension tuning, different wheels, LED headlights and slight differences in exterior details. The GT 5.2 will initially be offered only as a coupe, and only 90 examples are destined for the U.S. market. A Spyder version is expected later in the year.

The 5.2 models also include the 4.2 options as standard, minus the all-leather upholstery and carbon-ceramic brakes. A variety of carbon-fiber exterior and interior trim packages are available on all models, while the coupes can be equipped with alternate "side blade" finishes.

Powertrains and Performance

The 2012 Audi R8 4.2 is powered by a 4.2-liter V8 mounted behind the passenger compartment that sends 430 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque through an all-wheel-drive system. A six-speed manual transmission with a gated metal shifter is standard, while a six-speed single-clutch automated manual known as R tronic is optional. In Edmunds performance testing, the R8 4.2 with either transmission went from zero to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. EPA-estimated fuel economy rings in at 11 mpg city/20 mpg highway and 14 mpg combined with the manual and 13/21/16 with R tronic.

The Audi R8 5.2 gets a 5.2-liter V10 that produces 525 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. It has the same transmission choices. In Edmunds performance testing, the 5.2 Coupe with the manual went from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, while the 5.2 Spyder with the manual did it in 3.9 seconds. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 12/19/14 with the manual and 13/19/15 with R tronic. The R8 GT 5.2 boosts power output to 560 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. The R tronic is the only transmission offered. Audi estimates a 0-60-mph time of 3.6 seconds.

Safety

Standard safety equipment includes antilock disc brakes, stability control, side airbags and knee airbags. Front and rear parking sensors and a rearview camera are available.

In Edmunds brake testing, multiple R8s have come to a stop from 60 mph in a range between 104 and 108 feet, which is very good.

Interior Design and Special Features

As with every Audi, the R8 has a cabin finely crafted from top-notch materials. The seats are comfortable for long-distance travel and the driving position suits a wide range of people. We like the center stack's elegant swoop away from the driver, but this means that major controls require an awkward reach. In particular, the navigation and audio controls are operated by an unintuitive, dash-mounted knob located next to the display screen.

Audi claims there's enough room behind the R8 coupe's seats for a pair of golf bags, but you'd have to be pretty hard-pressed for country club transport to try that. The 3.5-cubic-foot front trunk is awkwardly shaped and barely provides enough space for an overnight bag (a Porsche 911 is a minivan by comparison). As such, the R8 is not the right choice for a long-distance road trip.

Driving Impressions

The 2012 Audi R8 rides firmly despite its adaptive suspension, and road noise is pronounced relative to most other Audis. By exotic car standards, though, the R8 is remarkably comfortable as a daily driver, and visibility is surprisingly good in all directions. On twisting roads, the R8's preposterous power, quick reflexes and heroic grip conspire to make this 3,600-pound supercar feel almost as nimble as a lightweight roadster.

Speaking of power, the V10 adds an appreciable amount, as well as a uniquely racy soundtrack, but even the base V8 is one of the best-sounding and most tractable engines we've experienced. We can't recommend the outdated single-clutch R tronic gearbox, as its slow-witted, cranky upshifts make the car sluggish and clumsy when driven around town. The conventional manual transmission, on the other hand, is a joy to operate, featuring an excellent mechanical feel augmented by a loud, metallic "clack-clack"as you row through the exposed gates. We strongly suggest that you get the manual.

While the V10-powered models do provide a performance advantage, we can't justify the additional outlay of cash in light of how truly good the V8 versions are. Furthermore, unless you're spending an unusual amount of time at a racetrack, where hundredths of a second actually means something, we'd pass on the R8 GT 5.2 as well. The GT's weight reduction regimen reduces some of its everyday appeal, with significantly less sound insulation and a slightly jarring ride.

What's New for 2012

The Aston Martin DB9 is no longer available with a manual transmission. The previously antiquated navigation system has been replaced by an improved Garmin-powered unit. Finally, there are two new special editions for 2012 known as the Luxury and the Sport.

Introduction

Some day the car will cease to be our preferred means of transportation. Perhaps it's hard to even imagine, but then again, someone would've said the same thing 300 years ago had you told him horses would become mere toys for wealthy little girls. Yet on that day in the distant future when we fully switch over to automated hydrogen hover pods, humanity shall look back fondly at the Aston Martin DB9 as one of the prettiest cars to ever roam the Earth. It shall serve as proof that the automobile was so much more than just a way to go from A to B.

Yet the aesthetic merits of the 2012 Aston Martin DB9 are not in question. If this was a beauty contest, we wouldn't even get past Regis Philbin's opening monologue before the crown would be placed upon its hood. Instead, the DB9 competes with a lineup of exotic cars that are all newer in design, mostly superior in performance and occasionally cheaper as well. Plus, its rivals from Audi, Ferrari, Maserati and Mercedes-Benz aren't exactly ugly.

That's not to say the DB9 is all show and no go. It brings to the table the same lightweight yet structurally rigid all-aluminum platform that underpins every Aston Martin. Though it dates back to 2004, this platform has continuously been updated over the years. For instance, the DB9 convertible (Volante) was significantly strengthened to eliminate the shuttering and jiggling that used to occur when traveling on broken pavement. Just last year, the two-mode adaptive suspension from the DBS was added to simultaneously improve the DB9's handling and already compliant ride.

Under the hood, you get a 4.7-liter 470-horsepower V12, which propels the DB9 coupe from zero to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. That's certainly quick, but a Porsche 911 will match that for $90,000 less, while the similarly priced Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is about a second quicker. The DB9 also comes standard with a traditional six-speed automatic transmission, which is smoother in operation than the occasionally jerky automated manuals found in most of its rivals, but slower to respond to paddle shift inputs.

Unfortunately, a manual transmission is no longer offered on the DB9. While it was a rare choice among owners, when a car company specializes in allowing customers to specialize their cars, it seems odd that it would eliminate the manual for those who'd want one. If you really want to row your own gears, you'll have to step down to a Vantage or up to a DBS.

If anything, the lack of a manual backs up the notion that the 2012 Aston Martin DB9 is not intended to be an ultimate automotive thrill machine. Instead, the DB9 coupe and the DB9 Volante convertible are considered GT cars. While boasting a more dynamic driving experience than a Bentley Continental GT, both DB9s are comfortable and spacious enough to drive from Miami to Los Angeles without making your butt go numb, your ears ring or your luggage remain at home. The interior's masterful collection of fine leathers, rich woods and even sapphire crystal make such a trip all the more enjoyable. The DB9 is one of the rare everyday exotics, and although it will be forever remembered for its beauty, it's pretty good at going from A to B as well.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2012 Aston Martin DB9 is available in coupe and convertible (Volante) body styles. Both have two seats, but the two rear ones are tiny and barely fit for children.

Standard equipment includes 19-inch cast alloy wheels, two-mode adaptive suspension, a limited-slip differential, xenon headlights, front and rear parking sensors, power-folding mirrors, cruise control, automatic climate control, heated power front seats (eight-way driver, four-way passenger, includes memory functions), full leather interior, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a battery deactivation switch (for extended parking), a trunk-mounted umbrella, Bluetooth, a navigation system, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a premium Aston Martin sound system with a six-CD changer, an auxiliary audio jack, a USB audio jack and an iPod interface. The Volante adds a fully powered soft top and a wind deflector.

Options include forged alloy wheels and a Bang & Olufsen surround-sound audio system. The DB9 is also highly customizable, especially when it comes to exterior paint. There's a rather large selection of colors to choose from (including Volante roof colors), plus you can request any paint code Aston Martin or any other manufacturer has ever used. There are also plentiful interior trim types and leather hues available.

The Luxury Special Edition available on both the coupe and Volante adds to the base DB9 10-spoke forged alloy wheels, silver brake calipers, Morning Frost (white) paint with a silver contrasting hood and special metallic bronze leather. The Sport Special Edition available on the coupe only gets a sport exhaust, black-painted 10-spoke forged alloy wheels, black brake calipers, Carbon Black or Quantum Silver paint, and special semi-aniline leather in Obsidian Black (coupe).

Powertrains and Performance

The 2012 Aston Martin DB9 features a 6.0-liter V12 that sends 470 hp and 443 pound-feet of torque to its rear wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission rear/mid-mounted for optimum weight balance. Aston Martin says the coupe will go from zero to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, while the convertible should be a few ticks slower. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 13 mpg city/20 mpg highway and 15 mpg combined.

Safety

The 2012 Aston Martin DB9 comes with antilock brakes with brake assist, traction and stability control, front side airbags (which protect head and torso), and front and rear parking sensors. The Volante comes standard with automatically deploying rollover bars.

Interior Design and Special Features

It's difficult to find a surface in the DB9 that's not covered in soft leather, while veneer, alloy trim and even sapphire crystal fill in the blanks. Easily deciphered buttons combine with a central screen to create fairly simple and user-friendly audio/climate controls. Thankfully, the DB9's previously antiquated navigation system has been replaced by a new Garmin-powered unit that's much easier to operate.

One ergonomic quibble is the way the needles of the electroluminescent gauges rotate in opposite directions -- the speedometer goes clockwise, the tachometer goes counter-clockwise. The speedometer's tiny numbers also render it useless, although there's a digital speedometer in the trip computer as a backup.

The driver seat is marvelously comfortable, with ample leg- and headroom for taller drivers. Unfortunately the four-way power passenger seat doesn't offer the same amount of adjustability and comfort. The two rear seats are glorified parcel shelves, while the trunk offers enough room for a set of golf clubs and a suitcase. The cabin's decent outward visibility makes the DB9 less onerous to drive than some other exotics. The Volante's visibility is understandably worse, and wind buffeting can be a little tiresome.

Driving Impressions

The 2012 Aston Martin DB9 is striking in the ease with which it drives down the road. The automatic transmission is far smoother in operation than the automated manual gearboxes found in most of its competitors, though its manual-mode gearchanges via shift paddles don't come as quickly. The steering is light and precise, although don't expect Ferrari accuracy and feel.

You might consider this a trade-off, as the DB9's compliant ride makes it one of the few exotic sports cars that you'd drive cross-country. With its active dampers, the DB9 manages to hang onto that compliant ride even as its ability to handle the corners has been enhanced. The DB9 has always been exhilarating to drive, changing direction easily and responding smartly to steering and braking inputs, but now the Sport setting of the two-mode active suspension gives the car a dimension of ultra-high performance, making the discontinued Sport Suspension package unnecessary.

The Aston Martin DB9 Volante was once criticized for being a flaccid, jiggling mess over broken pavement, but Aston has made revisions over the years to largely correct this problem. You'll still get the odd rumble through the steering wheel, but it's gentle and probably well worth the delight of hearing the burbling thunder of the V12's exhaust note with the multilayered roof peeled back. While the coupe remains the choice for drivers, the Volante is now closer in capability.

What's New for 2012

For 2012, the Ferrari California is essentially unchanged.

Introduction

As anyone who has traveled through it can attest, the state of California has (at least) a couple of distinct personalities. Fittingly enough, so does a Ferrari that goes by the same name. Thanks to its retractable hardtop and refined yet powerful performance, the 2012 Ferrari California can provide the comfort and security of a grand touring coupe or the sunny exposure and more thrilling experience of an exotic roadster. Although Ferrari has produced a number of front-engine GT cars, this California is the first Ferrari to sport a V8 (as opposed to the more typical V12) up front, and it's also the company's first convertible to offer the considerable advantages of a retractable hardtop.

That folding metal top gives a strong clue as to the Ferrari's intended buyer. The company figures that most buyers of the California will deem comfort and practicality more important than raw-edged, high-speed thrills. In exchange for its considerably heavier weight (as opposed to a soft cloth top), the retractable hardtop provides a quieter top-up interior as well as better isolation from severe weather and greater security. Unfortunately, the space needed to house the hideaway top results in rather bulky and awkward rear-end styling.

It may sound as if the 2012 Ferrari California is destined for a spot on Maranello's Wall of Shame, right alongside the 400/412 and Mondial. But no worries there, as the California's direct-injected V8 cranks out 453 horsepower and makes all the right Ferrari noises. Furthermore, the California was the first Ferrari to get a dual-clutch automated manual transmission. Not only does it click off rapid, F1-style shifts, it does so without the low-speed herky-jerky motions of the single-clutch automated manuals found in previous Ferraris.

Although the California will likely see more drives up the coast or trips to fancy downtown restaurants than along mountain roads, that's not to say it can't dance. Weighing in at nearly 2 tons, the California is no lightweight, but those pounds are well distributed at 47/53 front/rear. It's surprisingly agile and an easy car to drive hard -- perfect for the first-time Ferrari owners the company anticipates the California will attract.

The 2012 Ferrari California isn't the only exotic grand touring convertible out there. The 2012 Aston Martin DB9 Volante and 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG are in the California's price range, while cars like the Audi R8 Spyder and Maserati's GranTurismo are notably less expensive. None have the Ferrari's retractable hardtop roof, but all are arguably much prettier because of it. Of course, none of these is a Ferrari. Just like the state, the California has an appeal all its own.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2012 Ferrari California retractable-hardtop convertible comes standard with 19-inch wheels, bi-xenon headlights, the "manettino" steering wheel knob for adjustable vehicle settings, full leather interior, fold-down rear seatback, a trip computer, hard drive navigation system and a CD player sound system with touchscreen interface.

Options are extensive, as Ferraris are highly customizable -- there are myriad exterior paint and interior leather color choices available. More typical optional items include diamond-finish wheels in 19- and 20-inch sizes, run-flat tires, adaptive headlights, adaptive suspension dampers, front parking sensors, a rearview camera, cruise control, auto-dimming mirrors, carbon-fiber aerodynamic enhancements, faux-suede upholstery, full power seats, different seat designs ("Daytona" style, diamond-quilted and carbon-fiber racing), an upgraded sound system and an iPod interface.

For those concerned about the environment and wasting fuel, Ferrari offers an optional package whose highlights include automatic stop/start (engine shuts off while the car is stopped, then restarts when it's time to go) and an adaptive transmission (that optimizes shifts during city driving to improve mileage).

Powertrains and Performance

The rear-wheel-drive Ferrari California is powered by a 4.3-liter V8 that cranks out 453 hp and 357 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual is the only available transmission.

According to Ferrari, the California is capable of sprinting from zero to 60 mph in fewer than 4 seconds and hitting a top speed of 193 mph. Fuel economy estimates are 13 mpg city/19 mpg highway and 15 mpg combined.

Safety

Antilock disc brakes, front side airbags, an automatically deploying rollbar, and stability and traction control are standard on the 2012 Ferrari California.

Interior Design and Special Features

Like every current Ferrari, the new California has an interior befitting its lofty price. There's leather everywhere (available in multi-tone combinations) and the overall design is contemporary and sharp. The steering-wheel-mounted "manettino" knob gives the driver control over a wide range of dynamic vehicle functions. The touchscreen entertainment system offers a variety of virtues, from hard drive music storage to available iPod connectivity, but it is essentially a silver-painted version of the head unit available in most Chrysler group products. That association in a $200,000 Ferrari is bad enough, but its below-average functionality is worse.

The California's rear seat is so cramped that it would be silly not to get the rear parcel shelf instead -- it looks nicer, and the seatback folds down either way. Trunk space with the top up is an impressive 12 cubic feet, and there's still a usable 8.5 cubic feet left over with the top down.

Driving Impressions

Weighing about 3,800 pounds, the 2012 Ferrari California is hardly an elemental sports car. Nonetheless, the California's road manners are exemplary, with a relatively smooth ride for cruising and handling that's sharp enough to justify the prancing horse badge. When it was introduced, many wanted to dismiss the California as a flaccid poseur's car, but driving it quickly proved any such assumptions wrong. The V8 pulls hard and sounds amazing, while the dual-clutch transmission is polished and efficient whether you're banging through the gears on back roads or puttering around town in automatic mode. And thanks to the retractable hardtop, coupelike refinement at speed is also on the California's résumé.

What's New for 2011

The 2011 Bentley Continental GTC carries over pretty much unchanged. A limited-edition variant called the 80-11 replaces the Series 51 option.

Introduction

It's difficult to argue that the Bentley Continental GTC is anything but a solid choice among ultra-luxury convertibles. But with the likelihood of an improved version on the horizon, the decision to purchase the current 2011 model gets complicated. The 2012 Continental GT coupe is set to receive a slight styling refresh, sharper handling, more rear seat space and updated electronics. Considering this, the 2011 GTC might be akin to waiting in line for last year's iPhone.

If you absolutely must have a Continental GTC now, you can find comfort in the fact that you're still getting an exclusive and opulent form of open-air motoring. For the $200,000-plus price tag, you'll be surrounded by supple leathers, rich wood trim and premium metal accents. And moving all of this finery around is a 6.0-liter 12-cylinder that produces an inspiring 552 horsepower.

But you'll also be saddled with a horse that is ready to be put out to pasture, considering that the 2011 Bentley Continental GTC soon will be "last year's" model. Yet even if "next year's" will be the one to get, it's a still a good idea to check out the Continental GTC's few competitors. The Aston Martin DB9 and DBS Volante convertibles book-end the Conti in terms of price, and both breathe quite a bit of life into this segment with sportier handling and styling.

The Maserati GranTurismo Convertible is one of the most attractive cars on the market and won't set you back quite as much, either. For those less interested in prestige (but still a taste of English luxury), the Jaguar XKR is a stirring ride at half the price of the GTC. All are superb automobiles, but remember that if you've got your heart set on a Bentley, it's a probably a good idea to wait for next year's model.

The 2011 Bentley Continental GTC is a premium luxury convertible offered in a single, well-appointed trim level. Standard features include painted 19-inch forged-aluminum wheels, a power-folding soft top, an electronically adjustable air suspension, bi-xenon headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, front and rear parking sensors, keyless ignition/entry, a full leather interior with a choice of primary and secondary hides in 17 colors, burl walnut trim, dual-zone automatic climate control with rear-seat controls, 10-way power heated front seats with memory functions and power lumbar, Bluetooth, a navigation system and a 12-speaker stereo with satellite radio and a glovebox-mounted six-CD changer.

Options include carbon-ceramic brakes (only available with the optional 20-inch wheels), a power-opening and -closing trunk, adaptive cruise control, a heated steering wheel, an 1,100-watt 13-speaker Naim sound system with two subwoofers, an iPod interface, massaging front seats, four upgraded interior veneers and a rearview camera. There are also a variety of special-order options known as the Mulliner Driving Specification that range from more exclusive veneers and lamb's-wool carpeting to diamond-quilted seating surfaces and specialized exterior paint colors.

New for 2011 is the 80-11 Edition package of options. This grouping is limited to only 80 examples and adds exclusive cosmetic enhancements that include 20-inch wheels, a dark gray metallic soft top, a Mulliner alloy fuel cap, a three-spoke steering wheel, alloy pedals, package-specific interior trim materials and minor exterior and interior badging.

Powertrains and Performance

Powering the Bentley Continental GTC is a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter engine with its 12 cylinders arranged in the Volkswagen Group's unique "W" formation. This W12 power plant produces an impressive 552 hp and 479 pound-feet of torque. Even more noteworthy is that all of this torque is on tap at just 1,600 rpm. A six-speed automatic with steering-column-mounted paddle shifters is the only transmission available, and it sends power to all four wheels.

Despite its hefty 5,478-pound curb weight, the Continental GTC hustles from zero to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds, according to Bentley. Top speed is reported to be a breathtaking 195 mph. As expected, fuel economy is decidedly low, registering an EPA-estimated 11 mpg city/18 highway and 13 combined.

Safety

Standard safety features for the 2011 Continental GTC include stability control, traction control, front-seat side airbags and antilock disc brakes with brake assist. Also included is a rollover protection system that automatically deploys from behind the rear seats.

Interior Design and Special Features

Even with the lofty expectations that come with any Bentley, the Continental GTC's interior does not disappoint. Metal accents, rich wood trim and soft leather are beyond reproach, with the added old-world charm of push-pull vent controls, a Breitling timepiece, and metal switches and levers. Regrettably, the infotainment and navigation system is old-world as well, since Bentley hasn't changed it since the Continental GTC's 2004 introduction, and its age shows in the undersized display screen and nonintuitive interface. Mercifully, the optional iPod interface is easier to use.

Front passengers will undoubtedly be pleased with their leather-swaddled thrones, but the backseat is a different story. There's room for two shorter passengers, but only if those in front are in a generous mood. The 9.2-cubic-foot capacity of the trunk isn't impressive given the GTC's outsized proportions, but it's enough to accommodate a standard golf bag with the woods removed.

Driving Impressions

Despite the 2011 Continental GTC's portly weight and plus-sized dimensions, it is surprisingly well mannered in terms of performance. Acceleration is authoritative and handling is decent, though hardly sporting. In all likelihood, GTC buyers are more interested in its smooth ride and road presence, and in these respects, the drop-top Bentley should delight. Lower the beautifully lined soft top, erect the folding wind deflector over the backseat, raise the windows and marvel at how little noise and air infiltrate the Bentley's cabin. At 75 mph, you'll find your hair mussed no more than if the air-conditioning were turned to max.

Introduction

Most cars get redesigned every five to six years, which makes the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class all the more impressive. This old soldier is entering its 10th year since its last complete redesign, and even though it has been updated over the years with new engines, updated gizmos and an aggressive new face, the SL still retains the seamless blend of luxury and performance this retractable hardtop convertible has had since the very beginning. To be trite, it's an oldie but a goodie.

However, the current SL's life is coming to a close and several of its sub-models have already been put out to pasture. The SL600 and SL63 Black Series disappeared last year, and the twin-turbo V12 SL65 AMG has been discontinued for 2012. That's an awful lot of automotive fun resigned to the big used car lot in the sky, but any grief should be mitigated by the fact that the SL550 and SL63 AMG are still very appealing cars.

Either version of the SL can serve as a smooth-riding boulevard cruiser and capable back-road stormer, walking the fine line between comfort and performance in a way that Mercedes does so well. The SL's retractable hardtop roof is also available with a glass skylight, something that sets this car apart in a market segment that includes nothing but soft tops. Of course, when the competition includes such cars as the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Audi R8, BMW 6 Series, Jaguar XK, Maserati GranTurismo and Porsche 911, it can certainly be hard to choose. Each is spectacular in its own right, yet also very different.

In a way, the fact that the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is still relevant after 10 years is a testament to how truly excellent it is.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is a two-seat convertible with a retractable hardtop that is available in SL550 and SL63 AMG trim styles.

The SL550 comes standard with 18-inch wheels, bi-xenon headlamps, a wind deflector, heated wiper and washer nozzles, automatic wipers, remote roof activation, a power trunk closer, keyless ignition/entry, auto-locking interior storage bins, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way power seats (with heating, ventilation, four-way lumbar adjustment, adjustable bolsters and memory functions), the AirScarf passenger-warming system, leather upholstery, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, auto-dimming rearview and driver-side mirrors, Bluetooth, a navigation system, real-time traffic, voice controls and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system with a six-CD/DVD changer, satellite radio, HD radio and an iPod/USB media interface. The SL Wheel package adds 19-inch AMG wheels, high-performance tires, upgraded brakes, shift paddles and dark-tinted head- and taillights.

The SL63 is a high-performance variant that features a more powerful engine, a high-performance transmission, different 19-inch AMG wheels and various AMG-tuned components (suspension, brakes, exhaust) and different styling. Inside you get AMG-specific styling flourishes, different leather upholstery and a sport steering wheel. The AMG Performance package adds a limited-slip differential, a more aggressively tuned suspension, forged alloy wheels, a beefier steering wheel and a higher top speed.

Both SL-Class models can be equipped with front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control and a glass moonroof. There are also a number of "Designo" special-order options that bring special exterior and interior colors.

Powertrains and Performance

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL550 is powered by a 5.5-liter V8 that produces 382 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission are standard. Mercedes estimates that it will go from zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. EPA-estimated fuel economy stands at 14 mpg city/22 mpg highway and 17 mpg combined.

The Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG gets a 6.2-liter V8 that produces 518 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. It's all managed via a seven-speed automated manual transmission with shift paddles. In Edmunds performance testing, it went from zero to 60 in 4.6 seconds. Its estimated fuel economy is 12/19/14.

Safety

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class comes standard with stability and traction control, antilock brakes with brake assist, side head/thorax airbags, a driver knee airbag and a pop-up rollbar that deploys automatically in the event of a rollover (it also can be raised by the driver at the touch of a button). Also standard is Mercedes mbrace emergency telematics service.

In Edmunds brake testing, the SL63 AMG came to a stop from 60 mph in a very short 108 feet.

Interior Design and Special Features

In the realm of two-seat roadsters, it doesn't get more spacious or more luxurious than the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. With the hardtop raised, even our tallest editor (6-foot-3) had enough headroom, while legroom was also pretty good. The eight-way power seats offer a generous range of adjustment and feature a lengthy list of other features to keep you coddled and comfortable. These include heating, cooling, adjustable bolsters and the AirScarf system that gently blows warm air on your neck. There aren't too many cabins better suited to top-down motoring.

If there's one area where the SL shows its advanced age, this would be its older COMAND electronics interface, which features a central four-way toggle (not a knob). Newer Mercedes models incorporate a mouselike knob that's much easier to use.

Driving Impressions

How you experience driving a 2012 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class depends entirely on which model you choose. The SL550 is the boulevard cruiser of the two, yet we've found that the steering and Active Body Control systems produce a more satisfying performance car than ever before because the package is more in tune with the driver's intentions. And with 382 hp, you'll never be wanting for power, of course. This same endorsement also applies to the SL63 AMG, although to an even greater degree. It's a snarling beast of a machine, yet it still manages to be both comfortable and capable, showcasing a wider range of abilities than simply going fast in a straight line.

Bentley dropped a major bombshell on the eve of the 2012 Paris Auto Show, taking the wraps off the Bentley Continental GT3 Concept Racer and announcing that it intends to return to the racetrack for the first time since 2003.

Bentley said the GT3 racer is being developed by a dedicated motorsport team at the company's factory in Crewe, England.

Bentley is taking a page from Porsche's playbook, which uses racing not only for marketing benefits, but as an internal motivator that can often change the way people work inside of an automaker.

PARIS — Bentley dropped a major bombshell on the eve of the 2012 Paris Auto Show, taking the wraps off the Bentley Continental GT3 Concept Racer and announcing that it intends to return to the racetrack for the first time since 2003.

Bentley said the GT3 racer is spun off the new GT Speed and is being developed by a dedicated motorsports team at the company's factory in Crewe, England. The automaker plans a return to racing by the end of 2013 with a GT racecar.

Bentley is taking a page from Porsche's playbook, which uses racing not only for marketing benefits, but as an internal motivator that can often change the way people work inside of an automaker.

"The clear message from our customers is that Bentley belongs on the racetrack, and the Continental GT3 is the realization of a dream we've had ever since the launch of the Continental GT," said Wolfgang Schreiber, Bentley CEO, in a statement. "The new GT Speed is the perfect car for us to develop into a racer, and our work so far has shown huge potential."

While not spelling out specific events, Bentley said the new racer will be eligible to compete in a range of race series and events, "up to and including 24-hour marathons."

Presumably, the Bentley racer would compete at such venues as the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, a touring car and GT endurance-racing event on the Nordschleife, or north loop of the Nürburgring.

With the announcement of a GT racecar, Bentley appears to have stopped short of developing a new prototype racer — a more exotic vehicle that would not have street roots.

During the 1920s, Bentley was a powerhouse in racing, setting new speed records. Bentley first won Le Mans in 1924 and from 1927-'30 won the prestigious race each year. In 2003, 73 years since Bentley's last Le Mans win, two Bentley Speed 8s entered the epic 24-hour endurance race. They came in 1st and 2nd. But Bentley hasn't been involved in motorsports since then.

"Development of the Continental GT3 will continue over the coming months in the build-up to the start of a test program in 2013," Bentley said.

Edmunds says: This is not "everyman" racing. Expect Bentley's return to the track to be old school in some ways, with gentlemen racing their expensive cars. It's definitely going to add more spice to the brand, especially if Bentley gets a win in a big race.

Consumer Reports Finds Faulty Release Inside Trunks of Lexus ES, GS

If you own a car from the last 10 years, you've probably noticed a glow-in-the-dark trunk release on the inside of the trunk. That's to help anyone who happens to find themselves inside the trunk escape from it. It's been a federal requirement for all cars in the U.S. since Sept. 1, 2001, following a 1998 summer where 11 children died from inadvertent trunk entrapment. Since its implementation, no children have died in the trunk of a car that has the release.

Consumer Reports noted the release inside their 2013 Lexus ES and GS sedans could snap off, however. One editor's 4-year-old son wanted to test (under supervision) the emergency release, which snapped off. The publication found that in the ES 350, ES 300h and GS 350 sedans, the release lever could break if you pulled it toward the driver's side of the car. Lexus parent, Toyota, told Consumer Reports that the Lexus IS has a similar release design. Consumer Reports spot-tested other test cars in its fleet and found no such issues.

Toyota has launched an “active investigation" into the interior trunk release, spokesman John Hanson told Bloomberg News. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, meanwhile, told Consumer Reports it's "aware of the issue and is evaluating available information to determine if additional action is warranted."

Reinforcing the handle or redesigning the plastic housing – which places pressure on the handle, if tugged toward one side, to snap it in two – should be an easy fix, but it comes at a bad time for an automaker that just issued one of the largest recalls in history.

Last week on Top Gear, Jeremy and James fell quite in love with the new Nissan GT-R's rather smashing launch control function. It made Jeremy's face go all funny.

Had Jeremy had a go in this AMS Performance-tuned Nissan GT-R, his face may well have melted. This is because said GT-R packs 1,300bhp and 1,000lb ft of torque. Even God doesn't have that many torques.

They took the black instrument of destruction to a drag strip and planted a very leaden foot. It recorded a scorching 9.052-second quarter-mile time at 166.7mph. It also recorded a 60mph-130mph time of 3.46 seconds, which in the vast pantheon of absurdity, is frankly, absurd.

PARIS — After many teases of the Audi A3 Sportback leading up to this week's Paris auto show, Audi showed the compact five-door hatchback to the crowd tonight at Volkswagen Group Night. VW Group Night is an event held the evening prior to the show and usually offers a sneak peek at the company's show plans.

Though the A3 Sportback TCNG dual-fuel was shown to a small group at a presentation near Munich earlier this week, VW Group Night marked the first time the standard model was revealed.

The new structure helps shave nearly 200 pounds from the car's curb weight. Its exterior dimensions are similar to the outgoing car, though the wheelbase has grown by 2.3 inches. Three engines will be available initially — a 1.6-liter TDI turbodiesel, and 1.4- and 1.8-liter turbocharged gasoline engines. All engines will be available with a choice of a six-speed manual or an S tronic dual-clutch automated manual gearbox.

A high-performance S3 variant packing a 300-horsepower turbocharged gasoline engine is in the pipeline, too. In 2014 a plug-in hybrid variant will be available as a production model.

Unfortunately for North American consumers, Audi has already gone on record with Edmunds saying the A3 Sportback will not be brought into the United States.

Edmunds says: Looks great, and the weight savings promises improved dynamics and fuel economy. It may be costly, though, so Audi's decision not to bring the A3 Sportback Stateside might be a reflection of its doubts about the size of the premium compact hatchback market here.

The 2012 model year sees the introduction of the Regal eAssist, a mild-hybrid version of the Regal with impressive fuel economy. So far, though, the big news among test drivers has been the introduction of the Regal GS, which is even more powerful than the Buick Regal Turbo.

Still, some reviewers say that while the base Buick Regal offers great performance at a reasonable price, the Regal GS is up against better-known rivals in an intensely competitive class. “With the Regal GS, Buick is serving up a gourmet helping of nouvelle refinement and performance,” writes Motor Trend. “But the big-name chefs down the street at Acura and Audi are selling their established crowd-pleasers (TSX V-6 and A4 Quattro) for the same price."

Fortunately for buyers on a budget, most critics assert that even the base model handles like a European luxury sedan. Reviewers say that even though the Buick brand may not be strong enough to pull brand loyalists of more expensive automakers in, overlooking the Regal would be a mistake.

Other Cars to Consider

The 2012 Buick Regal is more expensive than most base-model affordable midsize cars, but less than other upscale midsize cars. If you’re shopping for value, compare the Regal with other affordable midsize cars like the Hyundai Sonata. Like the Regal, the Sonata comes with standard interior tech features that are often optional on competing models, but it’s also considerably less expensive than the Buick and gets better fuel economy.

If you’ve got a little more money to spend, and like the Regal’s composed handling and comfortable interior, consider rivals like the Audi A4. The A4 may be pricier than the Regal, but it also offers good fuel economy and optional all-wheel drive, as well as German luxury car cachet. However, the A4 also doesn’t come with as many standard features, which means that if you want to match the Regal’s list of standard equipment, you’ll have to add a longer list of options into your budget.

Buick Regal: The Details

For 2012, the Buick Regal is available in four distinct trims that are based primarily around the engine. Base models feature a four-cylinder engine, while the Regal eAssist adds a small electric motor to improve fuel economy. For buyers seeking more performance, Buick offers the Regal Turbo and the top-of-the-line Regal GS, which both feature a turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

GS and eAssist models are new for 2012, and Buick will be adding its IntelliLink touch-screen infotainment system as standard equipment at some point during the 2012 model year. If you like the Regal, but also want the latest tech features, you might want to wait for this feature.

The 2012 Ford Fiesta is a well-rounded small car that offers good driving dynamics, a comfortable interior and competitive interior tech for the class.

The Ford Fiesta hit the market in 2010, and for 2012, reviewers are still impressed with the 2012 Fiesta’s nearly perfect package. They say thisaffordable small car offers cute looks, fun color options, a quality interior, fun driving dynamics, upscale tech and good fuel economy ratings for the class.

That said, there are a few caveats consumers should know. In advertisements, Ford says the Fiesta gets 29/40 mpg city/highway. That’s with the Fiesta’s Super Fuel Economy package that’s optional on SE trims and higher, which means you pay more for good mileage. And, even though the Fiesta is available as a hatchback, it is not the most utilitarian five-door in the class. That honor is reserved for the Honda Fit, which has a standard Magic Seat and up to 57.3 cubic feet of cargo space.

But that doesn’t stop the Fiesta sedan and hatchback from being the Best Subcompact Car and Hatchback for the Money thanks to their stylish looks, available tech and fun performance.

Other Cars to Consider

There are two new affordable small cars that are challenging the Ford Fiesta: the Kia Rio and Hyundai Accent. Previously, the automotive press condemned these models for their bad performance, cheap interiors and few standard safety features. For 2012, both of these models are redesigned and the automotive press is raving about their 138-horsepower engines and attractive exteriors. What’s more, both of these models top the base Fiesta’s fuel economy ratings and get 29/40 mpg city/highway.

If practicality is your main concern, you should check out the Honda Fit. Some reviewers say it isn't as much fun as the Fiesta, but it does a lot of things the Fiesta can’t thanks to its standard Magic Seat. The Magic Seat has four modes (people, utility, long and tall), which means you can fit five adults comfortably, pack 57.3 cubic feet worth of stuff, tote a surf board or haul a tall plant. The Fit does trail the Fiesta in terms of fuel economy, but if practicality is your primary concern, the Honda Fit tops the Fiesta.

The Ford Fiesta sedan and five-door hatchback come in four trims: the base S, SE, SEL and SES. The base S is available only as a sedan, and the sedan is not available in the SES trim. The hatch isn't available in the SEL, though the two trims are nearly identical in terms of features and options.

The Ford Fiesta is in its second year of production, and there are few changes to the model. In response to critiques from the automotive press, Ford has added a center arm rest and blind spot sideview mirrors. The automaker has also added new interior style packages.
