How to Recycle Denim Jeans Into Cell Phone Pocket

I needed a cloth pocket for my new cell phone to protect it in my purse and did not want to spend a lot of money on a manufactured one when I have fabric and craft stuff laying around the house. I did use a bit of needle and thread, but realized at the end that this entire project can be done with just craft glue.

This project is easy enough for a child to do, but I highly recommend adult supervision with the scissors and the glue.

I used a pair of toddler child's blue jeans (size 4T) that all 3 of my kids had worn but the poor jeans had outlived its usefulness. This pocket is not only useful, it's sentimental as well. I decorated this with an iron-on patch (that I glued down with fabric glue) but you could leave it plain, paint it with fabric paint, etc.

Since I had all of the materials already, this didn't cost me a dime, but all the items I used are very inexpensive that can be found at any craft or fabric store.

step 1Items Needed

Items Needed:

Blue Jeans with two intact rear pockets
Heavy duty scissors
Fabric glue (I used Aleene's Fabric Fusion)
Fray glue (I used Tailor's Fray Block)
Hook and loop closure (I used Velcro brand) (Note, do not use magnetic closure or a snap, both can damage the cell phone.)
Needle and thread (optional, not pictured)

step 2Cutting the denim

As you can see in the picture and in the final product, the cell phone pocket takes TWO rear blue jean pockets.

If you plan on decorating the case afterwards (as I did), choose the prettiest pocket for the piece that will be exposed most. If the pockets already have nice embroidery, you might not even want to decorate it.

See diagram for how to cut. The top flap (outlined in red) is cut right around the pocket, the bottom flap (outlined in pink) is cut around the bottom and sides but give it more material at the top to be used in fastening the top to the bottom.

step 3Fasten the two pockets together

Turn the bottom pocket (the pocket with the extra material) over so the "inside" is up.

Turn the top flap upside down and butt the two together, leaving a little flap on the bottom side (see picture in next step).

I used needle and thread and whip-stitched the two together, but that is optional since fabric glue will work fine.

Please follow the instructions on the fabric glue bottle and work in a well-ventilated room.

step 4Seal the edges

Flip the pocket over and now glue the flap down, following the instructions on the bottle of fabric glue.

When that is dry, use the fray glue and run a bead around all the edges so they will not unravel.

step 5Place the fasteners on

Now, when the fray glue is dry, slip your cell phone inside the pocket and fold the top flap down. That will show you where to place the hook and loop closure on the inside of the pocket.

Place the hook closure (the scratchy half) on the bottom and the loop closure (the soft half) on the top. The soft part is better on top because there is less of a chance of it possibly scratching your cell phone.

Hook and loop closures are typically found with sticky glue backs, but if yours doesn't have that, feel free to use fabric glue to fasten them down with. I would not recommend sewing them because the threads on the bottom half would rub against your phone.

step 6Final Thoughts

There you go, it's done!

Now it does take more than a few minutes for the glues to totally dry, I would recommend giving it a few hours or overnight, so don't attempt to make this if you are going to need it immediately.

Some other ideas:

Sew a small "rock climbing clip" to a corner and fasten this to your belt loop or pocket book strap.
Sew a key ring to a corner and attach your keys to it.
Sew or glue a large piece of hook & loop to the back side of this and the other piece to the inside of your pocketbook to always keep your cell phone where you can reach it easily.
Make one to fit your MP3 player.
Make one to fit your digital camera.

How to Recycle Denim Jeans Into Floor Mat from Waistbands and Inseams

This mat is great to take outside as a sitting mat, as a meditation mat, or (with added carpet tape or rubberized backing) an indoor rug. It is thick and dense, making it comfortable on hard ground, and extra durable.

step 1Materials

You will Need:

An assortment of waistbands, inseams, and cuffs from old jeans.
For this mat I used eight waistbands, 2 1" wide hem cuffs, and eight inseams.

Leave tags on the waistbands to add an element of design.

Sewing Shears
Sewing Machine with a #16 needle (ofter labeled "leather")
Cotton Thread (use a contrasting color if you like for added aesthetic appeal)
Basic sewing skills

optional:
3"x4" patch of cotton muslin
permanent black fabric marker.

step 2Arrange Pieces

Lay the strips in the arrangement you want them for the mat. Line up the edges.

Pay attention to color, width variation, tag placement, to create a balanced and pleasing mat. Trim all pieces to the same length, I matched the length of the shortest waist band, about 32".

Be sure to trim away the buttons from the waist bands, as they are very uncomfortable to sit or stand on.

Save enough inseam material aside to edge the entire mat. I used both inseams from a pair of pink jeans to do this, for contrast and a splash of color. For a more colorful mat, You can dye your materials with standard fabric dye. I recommend dyeing pants prior to dismantling them. The dyeing process requires washing, which will heavily fray cut denim.

step 3Sew

Sew the strips together using a zig-zag stitch, where the needle presses through one strip at a time, alternating. Work from right to left (adding strips to the left hand side) for ease of stitching

A number 16 needle will go through four layers of denim (the thickness of an inseam or waist band) but not much more without an industrial machine. The trick to this mat is stitching in a way that draws the pieces together tightly, without overlapping them, allowing you to work a very dense material with a standard sewing machine.

Be careful to feed the strips through the machine so that the needle is pushing through inside the stitching already present on the seam or waistband. The fabric outside this seam will fray away quickly and your strips will not hold together.

Go slowly on your standard machine, you are asking a lot out of it and tugging or forcing the fabric will cause the needle to jam the faceplate and break. This is bad for the mechanism as well as destroying the needle and scratching the face plate.

step 4Trim

Add trim to your mat to increase durability. The short sides of your mat are made up of un-stitched denim, which will fray without reinforcement.

Tie off and trim all the thread ends from sewing the strips together. Trim away any uneven edges with your sewing shears.

Begin by sewing trim along the left side of the mat in the same way you added the strips. When you get to the end of your first long side, drop the needle, lift your machine foot, and rotate the mat to begin adding trim down the short side. Line up the next piece of trim with the edge of the trim you just added, to make an even rectangle. Sew back and forth over the two trim pieces several times to join them securely to each other. Continue sewing trim down the short side.

Add trim and join corners in the same fashion, working around the mat clockwise. If you need to join two shorter pieces of trim on the same side, rotate the mat and sew over the joint several times before rotating back and continuing along the side.

When you reach the beginning of your first piece of trim, join it to the rest of the trim. Sew your zig zag stitch all the way around the mat a second time. Pay close attention the needle placement to ensure all pieces are being joined securely to the trim. Because you are working with fray-able ends, it is important to make the second, reinforcing stitch around the mat.

step 5Finish and Customise

To finish you mat tie and snip all thread ends from trimming, as well as any denim fibers that are sticking out at odd angles. Press the entire mat flat with an iron set to cotton (it is safe to use your hottest setting, and may be necessary for this thick of a material)

The mat I made was a bridal shower gift for my best friend, so I added a custom fabric patch. To do this, write or draw your customization on a piece of cotton muslin (or similar light, stiff fabric) with a permanent fabric marker. Leave at least an inch all the way around your message. Fold and press edges inward with a 3/4" fold. Top stitch to the mat.

Enjoy this lovely reminder of how creativity breeds sustainability.

Materials Needed

Torso area of a pair of denim jeans.

The torso area will be used to make the bag. In some cases if the seat area is worn and thread bear, you may need to add a lining or patches so your items do not fall out of your bag.

Grommets or Button Holes.

The holes will be placed in the waist band of the jeans to create a place to attach your handles to your denim bag.

Bandanas, rope, or old thin broken belts.

Any of these items can be used to create the handles for your bag.

Heavy duty needle and thread. It is best to use a sewing machine with a heavy duty needle to sew the legs of the jeans together and to create the button holes if you choose to go that route.

Bag Instructions

The instructions are starting with a complete pair of old jeans.

1. Pin the inside pockets up so you don't cut the bottom of them off during the next step. You will be using

them for storage areas inside the bag.

2. Cut the legs off the jeans at the lower torso area straight across. If you wish you can cut above the crotch

area if you would prefer.

3. Turn the jean torso area wrong side out and sew along the areas where the legs from the jeans were.

(You can do the next step either by using the hole style grommets or creating button holes for the handles of your denim bag).

4. You will need to create two of the holes on the front and back side of the jeans in the waist band.

i. The four holes will need to be centered.

ii. The front holes should be centered between the zipper area and the side seams.

(The zipper should be zipped and the waistband button to do this).

iii.The back holes will need to be centered between the back and side seams.

(In order to have the holes for the handles to be centered front and back you can mark the hole areas with a white crayon or fabric pencil).

Now that you have your holes made for the handles of the denim bag, you will decide which style of handles you want to use.. The following instructions are for the bandana, rope, and thin belts.

Bandana Handles

The bandana's will be used on the diagonal. You can roll or fold them to the width that suits you. Push the ends of the bandanas through the holes and tie the ends in a tight not.

Rope Handles

Once you have decided on the length of the handles you want with the rope. Push the rope through the holes and tie off.

Thin Belt Handles

You can cut the belt down to the length you want to create your handles. You can use either end of the belt for this. Feed the belt through the holes. Since it is hard to tie off many belts, you can purchase belt runners at any craft shop. You will need four the holders the size of your belt. Run each end through the belt holder and secure with hot glue, a grommet or a snap.

You now have just created your first denim jean bag. You can use the bag as a purse, travel bag for cosmetics, children's toys and books or whatever suits your fancy.

As you may have noticed, I didn't mention the back pockets of the jeans. These can be used to hold your cell phone, pda, pencils, pens, sunglasses, and car keys.

This is a very cheap and easy way to recycle jeans into something useful. This project will work with almost any pair of jeans but adult male jeans work better since they have more denim.

Denim Potholders

Supplies needed :

Jeans

Scissors

Sewing Machine or Needle for hand sewing

Thread (color of your choosing)

Decorative items (optional)

1. Wash and dry the jeans.

2. Iron them flat. (If wrinkle, you may want to skip this)

3. Find a good size spot. (No rips or stains)

4. Decide what size you'd like your pot holders.

5. Cut through both layers of one pants legs. (This will leave you with two pieces of fabric)

6. Continue step 5 until you have the amount of pot holders.(Remember to use both legs of the pants)

7. Decide what side of the fabric you'd like to use. (You will place the insides together)

8. Choose colour threads as you wish.

9. You can choose to use a zig zag stitch but any stitch will do.

10. Go over the seam more than once to make the seam more durable.

11. Put in the washing machine. (This will fray up edges and give it a very cute look)

12. Cut some of the longer frayed ends after washing.

13. Add decorative items to your potholder.

I still remember my brothers bundled up all of their worn out jeans to throw away. I was little and even though I didn't know the meaning of 'recycle' but I had the idea of 'transforming' (what I thought at that time) the jeans into other form- other beautiful form.

Nowadays when I see that a number of women made quilts out of them, I knew that my idea back then when I was seven, was not only my imagination but something that can be real. My mother thought that jean quilts are really heavy, thick and it was hard to sew so what she did was to cut them up into squares and used them to wipe out oily and greasy spots in the kitchen area and my father used them to clean handy tools.

Oh, did I tell you that my late father was a painter? He was. He said denim scraps came in handy in his paint room as drop cloths and surface protectors. My mother had jeans all piled up with all sizes of denim squares so he could used them to wipe off greasy oil colour on his paint tools. Instead of using newspaper, he sometimes put a piece of denim under his paintings on the floor.

My younger sister loved denim and I made some of the cutest little denim clothes for her doll. One outfit I made was a denim skirt. Denim is too nice to simply throw away. There are so many other things you can use it for. There are a number of ways to recycle jeans. Put your mind to it and I'm sure you'll come up with some brilliant ideas of your own.
