Nice article but you left out relative importance/unimportance of planting and using poles. Many rely on balance with poles which could lead to a false sense of security.

I got an email from Northstar-at-Tahoe public relations this morning:

The Fibreboard Corporation created Trimont Land Company in June 1966 and resort planning began that year. Construction commenced in the spring of 1971, and the mountain opened shortly after for skiing on December 22, 1972.

Glad to finally have the actual date, thanks Jessica.

Thanks for the comment Berkley Student. You can never be sure of any thing's accuracy online.

I have seen several dates for the opening of Northstar-at-Tahoe. Some resources suggest a date as early as 1973 while others say the Fibreboard Corporation "officially" completed the resort in 1979. There seems to be a lot of evidence that the land for Northstar was purchased in 1975. From there most records only state that Northstar was completed on schedule. I am still investigating what that schedule was exactly. To further complicate the issue the Northstar Golf Course is reported to have been completed in both 1975 and 1979. The back 9 in 75 and front in 79.

I have an email in to my contact at Booth Creek. Hopefully they will be able to shed some definitive light on the subject.

Thanks for the comment.

Very interesting, John, thanks for the comment. The similarities in meaning and spelling defintely make you wonder, especially if you consider the presence and contribution of the Chinese to the Lake Tahoe area.

I wondered about the origin of the name "Tahoe." I assumed that the name was old and original. The story seems to suggest that. However, in 2001 on a visit to China, I visited the city of WuXi outside of Shanghai. WuXi stands on the shores of a lake known as Tai Hu or "Big Lake." If you had said that the name had originated before the presence of the Chinese in California, I would have just put the similarity as coincidence, but now you say that the Lake was officially named in the 1860's, I wonder if there is any connection between the Chinese name Tai Hu and Tahoe. It would probably be impossible to prove (although probably easy to disprove), but it seems more than coincidence that they both names mean "Big Lake."
