In the Northern Mariana Islands close to Guam, a volcano was first observed to be erupting back in 2004 and has continued to spew up lava ever since. An underwater microphone which was installed last year has been picking up sounds of volcanic activity and surprised scientists by its rare continuous activity.

The underwater volcano has grown almost forty metres in height in the last three years, as well as an astounding three hundred metres in width. An expedition to the area last month witnessed several explosions of the volcano, and researchers are impressed with the fantastic opportunity presented to them to study the growth of a volcano directly.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa stands at 56.70 metres tall on the highest side, and 55.86 metres on its lower side. It had an angle of 5.5 degrees although after restoration work the angle decrease to its present 3.99 degrees. The impressive tower is a site to behold and people travel from all over the world to see this leaning building. Construction of the tower began in 1173 and it started leaning to the side only a few years later.

The biggest hydroelectric power station in the whole world is the Three Gorges Dam that traverses the Yangtze River in China. Although most of the dam is now operational, several underground generators are currently being installed, and the power station is not set to be completely operational until 2011. This large power station has been controversial since the beginning, with environmental impacts and flooding issues two of the foremost problems.

Although the dam is highly impressive, the building of it has been controversial since the onset. The Three Gorges Dam provides a lot of clean electricity, prevents flooding as well as having navigational purposes, and many people have long been rooting for the power station. The construction of the dam however has created upheaval in many people’s lives, forcing them to relocate to other areas of the country. The construction has also been controversial due to several environmental impacts and flooding of nearby archaeological sites.

The sheer size of the canyon and the steep rock walls is humbling and many visitors are left with a sense of peace and wonder when seeing the Grand Canyon for the first time.

The Grand Canyon in the Colorado Plateau was formed over several thousands of years, and the deep chasm is an amazing site to behold. Visitors can enjoy a sense of solitude wandering numerous trails in the gorge. There are plenty of wildlife and remote areas to explore, and a camera is an absolute must-have piece of equipment.

Even the tiniest change in global temperature could cause a dominoes effect of changes all over the world. Many people wonder why even one single degree change in temperature can cause such extreme effects, and the answer is gradually emerging as more tests are being conducted.

Coral bleaching has been found to be occurring in many places worldwide, including Australia, Asia and the Caribbean. As water temperatures begin to increase, many corals struggle and begin to show signs of stress in the way of bleaching. If coral colonies die, this will have a knock on effect on many marine species that rely on coral for food or homes.

Global warming is also sparking fears for melting ice caps in both the Arctic and Antarctic. For species that rely on the ice, the melting could be a disaster. Global warming can cause sea levels to rise, which will in turn change the precipitation rates worldwide. Landscapes may change causing a loss of habitat for many animals. This could result in extinction for many of the species found today, as they struggle to cope with loss of food and habitat.

For many people who enjoy snorkelling and swimming; scuba diving is the next practical step. Scuba diving enables people to stay underwater for much longer than traditional breath-holding techniques through the use of scuba sets and the breathing of compressed air. Divers can stay underwater for longer through the use of air cylinders, and can enjoy the freedom and serenity that the underwater world has to offer.

Recreational scuba diving allows you to dive safely to depths up to forty metres. Deeper diving requires special training and is often referred to as technical diving. Forty metres however is typically deep enough for most people; with most marine life found in the shallower waters worldwide. Scuba diving allows people to enjoy the peace of the marine world while maintaining neutral buoyancy to avoid damaging the reefs. Swimming amongst spectacular wildlife and colourful corals is an experience most people would love to try their hand at.
