This festival intends to promote and heighten all cultural and artistic activities in the city center. For the occasion, several cultural, musical and theatrical activities were programmed most of which will be taking place along with the Book Fair.

All the activities that are integrated on this event intend to bring Madeira´s history to the city streets and for that purpose were defined five different historical periods of the islands history, which will take place on different areas of the city center.

Also, several of the local shops and restaurants will participate on this festival displaying food and beverages stalls, which will be placed within each geographical area.

Fireworks in Funchal

The Atlantic Festival, an event that marks the beginning of the summer season in Madeira, will this year integrate a diverse set of initiatives spread throughout the month of June, most importantly the International Fireworks Competition in Madeira; the Madeira Music Festival; the Regional Arts Week; and the “25th Tour of Madeira in Classic Cars – Classic Car Rally”.

The Madeira International Fireworks Competition will be held on four consecutive Saturdays of the month of June, at 10:30pm at the pier outside the Pontinha, with wonderful and exciting performances, lasting about 20 minutes each, which combine fireworks and music in a unique experience for tourists and residents.

The magic of this event starts on Saturday morning, with the Children’s Parade, on which, hundreds of children dressed for the occasion event to the Municipio Square where a beautiful flower mural is built, that is symbolically named “The Wall of Hope” (Muro da Esperança).

On Sunday afternoon, the streets of downtown Funchal will be filled with music, colour and soft aromas, through the sumptuous parade comprised by several floats, which harmoniously combine numerous flower species with blooming decorations full of creativity.

Alongside these events takes place a set of playful and recreational activities filled with charm and symbolism, such as, the construction of delicate floral carpets of unrivaled beauty along the main streets of Funchal, as well as musical concerts, folklore performances from Regional groups, shop window ornamentation and the Flower Exhibition in the Largo da Restauração.

Pico Ruivo is the highest peak on the Madeira Islands. It can be reached only by foot, usually either from Pico do Arieiro (3rd highest) after a strenuous hike, or from Achada do Teixeira with a shorter, easier trail. There is an additional trail leading west to Encumeada. Just below the summit is a hut offering simple accommodation and drinks.

Pico Ruivo is 1862 meters (6107 ft) high [1] and provides some of the most incredible views of the island from coast to coast, but unpredictable weather conditions can make it quite dangerous

You have not seen the Carnival of Madeira yet? … then I suggest you come over and experience the unique atmosphere that resembles the Brazilian Carnival … only more closer to your home.

There are two main parades, namely the Allegoric Parade and ‘Cortejo Trapalhão‘ (Fun Parade).

The Grand Carnival Float Pageant or Allegoric Parade takes place on this weekend. A total of 1,500 participants … members of numerous Samba groups which will compete against each in a friendly battle for the best performance and show on the streets of Funchal.

Colours, music, dancing, laughter, singing, erotic and mind-dazzling costumes are a few of the ‘weapons’ they will be using to achieve their goal … which is getting the bystanders and tourists also to dance.

On (Shrove) Tuesday is the second parade called ‘o Trapalhão‘ … the Fun Parade. A parade that everybody can take part in and it creates an atmosphere of effusive revelry. Surprising examples of creativity and imagination are finally displaying themselves after a year of waiting for this moment … and there is no shortage of daring caricatures, exciting costumes, and crazy creations. You will be amazed to discover an unknown side of the Madeira locals and wonder ‘are these the same people I run into each day here on Madeira?‘ …. however you wonder with a big smile.
