Especially in the crowded Indian timepiece market where the affordable luxury watch category is a barely Rs 1,500-crore market?&amp;nbsp; “Our diversification is closely linked to the 9/11 attack, after which the pocket tool was banned from all airports. Thirty per cent of our turnover came from duty-free showrooms. That stimulated an accelerated diversification strategy,” replies Mr Alexander M. Bennouna, Chief Executive Officer (Timepieces), Victorinox.&amp;nbsp; It's been ten years since the Swiss brand diversified into watches, but it's taken time to get its positioning right – earlier it entered the mass market category. But now it's graduated to the affordable luxury segment, and finding that it's a better fit with its core Swiss Army Knife proposition.&amp;nbsp; “We were a volume driver in the past. But now, from one million (watch) units exported a few years ago, we have reduced to half-a-million units. Yet, the turnover has more than multiplied,” says Mr Bennouna, describing how they consciously moved up the value chain. Victorinox watches are available for prices ranging between $300 and $2,000.&amp;nbsp; PRICE DIFFERENCE&amp;nbsp; Given the price difference between foreign watches sold in India and places such as Dubai, due to steep duties, why would the Indian customer buy a Victorinox locally? Mr Bennouna admits there is a 20 per cent difference, but he says service is the factor which will drive local sales.&amp;nbsp; And, India, of course, being a growing market it cannot ignore. In 2005, 85 per cent of Victorinox's turnover in watches came from Northern America. Today 45 per cent comes from Asia. “This is where the world growth is and we have significantly developed marketing activities in this zone,” says Mr Bennouna.&amp;nbsp; EXPANSION&amp;nbsp; In the last ten years, Mr Bennouna says, Victorinox has rapidly expanded into other categories – “Watch was natural because the Swiss timepiece is known to have all the values that echo quality. Three years later came luggage, then apparel, then fragrance.”&amp;nbsp; But it's the watch category Mr Bennouna is pushing in India through sustainable initiatives like Time To Care.&amp;nbsp; “We are not a watch brand but a Swiss brand making watches,” says Mr Bennouna, explaining that they will be playing up their Swiss values, though he admits there are at least ten competitors in the segment.&amp;nbsp; BRAND AMBASSADORS&amp;nbsp; And why no brand ambassadors? Rolex has its Roger Federer, Richard Miller has Rafeael Nadal and Felipe Massa, Longines has Aishwarya Rai, Tissot has Deepika Padukone.&amp;nbsp; “We use the values of Swiss army knife as key spokesperson,” retorts Mr Bennouna. Our brand ambassador is this iconic device. It has such quality and functionality that it even speaks for Switzerland.”&amp;nbsp; Chitra Narayanan for The Hindu Business LineBy Gregory Carrez - Victorinoxblog.com</itunes:summary><itunes:keywords>watches,montres,watchmaker,watchmaking,uhr,uhren,victorinox,swiss,army,military,swiss,made,automatic,quartz,horlogerie,horlogery,manufacture,pvd,mouvement,movement,caliber,eta,valjoux,valgranges,band,pics,revue</itunes:keywords><description>Why is iconic Swiss Army knife brand Victorinox, which holds virtual monopoly of the pocket tool market, pushing its watch category so much? Damascus steel represents craftsmanship that goes back more than a thousand years. Even in antiquity, a few resourceful sword-smiths knew how to create blades of unusual toughness and hardness from different kinds of steel. The multiple folding and forge welding led to a homogenization of the material, and required a great deal of skill and dedication. Then as now, the crowning highlight in the production of a Damascus blade was the finish. With careful grinding, polishing and etching the unique and characteristic patterns are reveled, thereby providing a glimpse into the soul of the steel. (The blade of this knife is manufactured from stainless high quality Damascus steel, 60 HRc). Available as of October 2011. It’s doubtful though that you’ll be wanting to take this particular tool along on your next expedition, as at the best part of £36,000 it’s a touch more expensive than most others in the camping shop. Based on the 74mm Executive-type Victorinox Swiss Army knife, the shell is made of either pure platinum or yellow gold depending on your fancy and is set in four carats of flawless diamonds – that’s 430 stones. Swiss company Bonfort have only produced 120 of each model so you’ll have to move fast, though sadly it doesn’t seem to have the tool for removing stones out of horse’s hooves. One of this masterpiece will be sold. Victorinox is most-famously known for their Swiss Army knife. It is, therefore, no surprise that producing a new version of the Swiss Army Knife was key to this collection.&amp;nbsp; It was the Victorinox owner, Veronica Elsener, who challenged Christopher to think of an innovative way of introducing a knife into the collection. Inspiration, and a no small amount of serendipity, struck when, trawling Swiss Army surplus stores, Christopher came across a box of one 100 unused horseshoe nails. The idea to melt down these nails and re-cast them as the scales that cover the knife was completely in-tune with the “re-made” essence of Christopher’s work.&amp;nbsp; To produce the knife the melted-down nails are hand hammered into shape, meaning that each knife is subtly individual. Finishing touches to this unique knife include the Remade In Switzerland logo branded onto the blade.&amp;nbsp; This attention to detail is matched in the packaging, which is an exact reproduction of the horseshoe nail box that Christopher found in the army surplus store. The box also contains a Swiss Army blanket remnant and a booklet that includes details on the collection.&amp;nbsp; Re-made in Switzerland, this piece is a limited edition of 100. The unique number can be found stamped beneath the cork screw tool.
