Jesus disse: “Não se turbe o vosso coração. Crede em Deus, Crede também em mim. Na casa de meu Pai, há muitas moradas. Se assim não fora eu vo-lo teria dito, pois vou aparelhar-vos o lugar. Também nos evangelhos esta tríade divina, Deus-filho, Deus-pai e Espírito Santo nos aponta para a visita de um “anjo” a Maria, deixando-a grávida de um ser claramente superior aos homens do seu tempo. José foi logo avisado do fenômeno e aceitou o menino que assombraria o mundo. No episódio do batismo, quando a terceira pessoa aparece nos céus, o Espírito Santo, talvez a “estrela” que guiou os magos para a adoração, levou Jesus pelo espaço até o deserto, quando ele foi testado pelo “demônio”, ou por uma entidade destinada a estabelecer que Jesus estivesse pronto mesmo para a dura missão a seguir, ou sucumbisse às tentações materiais. O Mestre, que não contaria com a interferência do Pai na hora do suplício (e voltou os olhos para cima; por que, se Deus está em toda parte?) venceu a morte e apontou o caminho para a evolução.

Deus é maior do que uma personalidade: é um somatório do tempo-espaço, um poder incapaz de ser compreendido, mas alcançável a todo o tempo, pois somos uma ínfima parcela do seu “corpo”. Quando ouço o que diz a Ciência sobre o Big-Bang e o nada que nos espera, penso no quanto esta matéria está ligada à compreensão de Deus, do todo, da multiplicidade de universos paralelos sendo criados e destruídos como qualquer corpo vivente. Estamos longe da compreensão e sempre estaremos, pois a nossa distância da Luz é infinita.

God is greater than a human personality; the sum of the whole time-space, a power impossible to be understood but reachable anytime, since we are a microscopic portion of his “body”. When we hear Science saying what is known about the Big-Bang and the nothingness ahead, I think how much this question is linked to the comprehension of God, the whole, the multiplicity of parallel Universes being created and dismissed as any living body. Quem eram e de onde vieram estas fantásticas criaturas? Anjo quer dizer mensageiro, intermediário. Quer dizer, criaturas subiam e desciam para buscar as instruções de “deuses” ainda mais poderosos que eles. Alguns anjos decidiram pendurar suas asas e passaram a viver entre as mulheres da Terra. Um grupo se rebelou e decidiu formar um partido próprio, chamados de “descaídos”, ou demônios, porque discordavam do modo em que os humanos eram guiados. Se o leitor consegue ler nas entrelinhas, já notou que estamos falando de ETs e dos seus chefes, instalados em naves (daí o termo “subiu aos céus”) ou possuidores de uma técnica de deslocamento “warp”.

O que hoje os homens fazem escandalizaria os sodomitas e mesmo assim nenhuma cidade moderna da Terra foi riscada do mapa. Portanto não se tratava de degradação moral, mas de alguma experiência genética que falhou.

A cozinha do presente aos poucos nos dá uma dica do que está por vir, talvez em uma década ou duas. Quem investir nos avanços conquistará, de imediato, a dona de casa cujo tempo se encurta a cada dia, pulando várias etapas como ir ao supermercado, escolher o almoço apropriado ou dar ordens precisas para a empregada. A senhora precisa de todo o tempo do mundo para navegar na Internet do futuro!

The kitchen of the present slowly gives us hints on what’s coming in a decade or two. Whoever invests in these advancements will conquest immediately the house wife whose time is shortening every day, skipping many steps like going to the supermarket, choosing the proper lunch or give specific orders to the maid. Madame needs all spare time to drown into the Internet of the future!

Em primeiro lugar vem a despensa, que será totalmente controlada por um computador programado pela dona de casa segundo os hábitos da família. A despensa terá o total controle dos produtos e avisará com antecedência o que está prestes a acabar. Um toque no botão e a ordem partirá para o supermercado, já com a conta paga ou creditada a ser paga no fim do mês. Outra novidade será a coleção de receitas, onde a consumidora verá o resultado numa tela, junto com a quantidade e os preços dos ingredientes. O tal botão manda a ordem e o supermercado providenciará a imediata entrega.

Estou chegando aos 70 anos cruzando a fronteira de dois séculos muito acelerados. Assisti assombrado as primeiras imagens da TV Tupi; mágica viva na sala do meu padrinho. Logo apareceram uma a uma as estações concorrentes, cada uma com novidades imperdíveis. Jogos ao vivo, peças, desenhos animados, um mundo de presentes para quem tinha de ir aos estádios, teatros ou cinemas. A qualidade da imagem e do som se somava à novidade dos satélites e à chegada de material internacional.

Existe uma fronteira na nossa vida onde a fantasia se parece muito com a realidade, os 16 anos. É como se nós recebêssemos um diploma de mérito por termos deixado a infância para trás, com o convite para ingressarmos no mundo dos adultos. Os rapazes já podem dirigir um carro com uma licença especial, já olham o corpo como um instrumento do prazer e iniciam entre eles os primeiros testes de competição pelas garotas. Elas também estão desabrochando para o amor; são jovens Vênus dizendo uma fieira de bobagens parecendo a mais bela poesia deste mundo. Desejáveis e intocáveis, eis a inspiração que motivou um monte de canções, especialmente nos anos mágicos dos 50 e 60.

Aos 16, eu comecei a me interessar por filmes de arte e comédias clássicas da Europa. No Rio de Janeiro era uma moda que começava a pegar. Muitos dos cineastas que deram seus primeiros passos do fim dos anos 60 em diante iam para os barzinhos próximos aos cinemas para discutir tudo sobre o filme e seu diretor. E lá estava eu com meus amigos Sydney e Olivar, encantados com tanta genialidade à nossa volta. Mas havia uma garota misteriosa (de 16?) que vagava de mesa em mesa, desfilando seus belos olhos azuis e seus louros cabelos até a cintura. Ela parecia estar em toda parte! Aonde nós fossemos, lá estava ela, como a tal Vênus em blue jeans da canção.

Many film makers who started their experiments from the late 60’s on gathered in the small cafés next to the movies to discuss the work and the director. Fevereiro não podia acabar sem nos roubar um ícone dos anos 60, Davy Jones, o crooner dos Monkees. Quando os Beatles varreram o planeta, apresentaram os Monkees como uma opção divertida à la Richard Lester, Eles ganharam uma série mais movimentada do que engraçada. Mas, por baixo de tanta armação, quem diria, havia bastante talento. A princípio eu torci o nariz, mas eles iam ganhando o meu coração em cada canção. Quando a gente é jovem, sempre há espaço para mais um... Eles conquistaram a minha simpatia gravando When Love Comes Knocking at Your Door, do grande Neil Sedaka, e o nocaute foi a música Valleri.

I had the chance to be in the presence of the greatest of ‘em all, John Phillips, when the Mamas and Papas sang in the extinct Canecão (Rio de Janeiro) in 1988 and I could meet them down at the dressing room after the show. Only John survived the original group, now featuring his daughter McKenzie Phillips in the place of Michelle, Scott McKenzie as Denny and Spanky McFarlane doing her best to substitute the finest singer in the world, Cass Elliot. Mas faltavam os Platters... Um dos meus sonhos era o de fazer aquele gesto do Only Yooou... E lá fui para o centro da cidade, onde Paul Robi tinha reunido outras vozes competentes. Meu filho Lincoln acabou fã dos Platters e não perdeu uma apresentação sequer. Ficou amigo deles! Quer dizer, a gente pode legar aos filhos os nossos gostos. Mesmo porque gostar dos Platters é a coisa mais fácil do mundo.

Há três canais que regulamente mostram interessantes pesquisas sobre o futuro, sempre comparando com o passado, em busca da reação do ser humano enfrentando mudanças lentas ou súbitas. São o NatGeo, o Discovery e o History. Enquanto escrevo, uma série chamada 2111 está rolando, com depoimentos de diversos cientistas.

Three channels regularly offer interesting research on future, Always matching with the past, searching the reactions of human beings facing changes, slow or subtle. Those are the NatGeo, the Discovery and History Channel. As I write, a series named 2111 is being shown, highlighting the statements of many scientists.

Neste fim de ano fiquei zapeando os canais de TV à espera de 2012. E bati com a imagem de uma das mais admiráveis mentes de dois séculos, o cientista Stephen Hawking, que ainda se comunica com o mundo através de um aparelho capaz de driblar sua total imobilidade. O programa falava da inexistência do tempo num buraco negro e, por conseqüência, a inexistência de Deus. A lógica matemática demonstra que, se não havia tempo antes do “Big Bang” que espalhou a matéria pelo universo, também não havia a intenção de que isto acontecesse. E também a ausência do seu autor. A matéria concluía com a declaração em voz cibernética que “portanto não haveria vida após a morte”. Se o maior gênio da nossa época afirma com tanta certeza, quem somos nós para contestar?

At the end of 2011 I was changing TV channels while waiting for the rise of 2012. So there was the image of one of the most admirable minds of two centuries, the scientist Stephen Hawking, who still communicates with the outside world through a gadget able to dribble his complete immobility. This brought me back the image of Galileo facing the Inquisition, furious with his statement that the Earth orbited the Sun and not the opposite, as written in the Bible (Joshua 10:13) “So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jasher. Here we are Galileo upside down. We have the right to ask time and modestly diverge Mr Hawking, right? Or has Science been sitting on the throne of the Vatican?

Em primeiro lugar, podemos propor a multiplicidade de universos e dimensões, uma infinidade deles. A criação deixaria de ser um privilégio nosso e o tempo, ao contrário de limitar-se à linha que vai do Big Bang aos dias de hoje, ir infinitamente para trás e por analogia, infinitamente para frente. O instrumental deste “ramo” científico é o de pesquisar a mente dos antenados e tentar organizar as informações num gigantesco quebra-cabeça de peças que nem sempre se encaixam. O método científico pouco se aplica aqui, e os menos corajosos desistem nos primeiros passos.

Assim, as novidades no campo das pesquisas vão sendo esquecidas e o trabalho pioneiro de pessoas como o Professor Mário Amaral, por exemplo, se dilui com a morte (OK, o passamento). Na ocasião, mesmo sendo espiritualista, até ela chegou a desconfiar da minha sanidade. É esta a força da Ciência quando se vê contrariada. Felizmente a ela nos aliamos.

Nos anos 60 surgiu uma novidade nos meios de comunicação, a mensagem subliminar. Quer dizer, um estímulo era enviado num filme, pela TV ou enquanto você ouvia uma música inocentemente. E pediram que o público enviasse uma palavra que ocorresse em sua mente ou surgisse em sonhos. Também o resultado surpreendeu, com quase 70 por cento de acertos ou quase.

Result: in the interval, almost all viewers rushed to the popcorn vendor machine, emptying it. Another experience was done during the program (TV Tupi, extinct): a word was repeated inaudibly and the audience was encouraged to mail the station whatever went into the minds or even dreams. Felizmente eu não associei minha doce Kim à salgada pipoca, pois a experiência só aconteceu nos Estados Unidos, num único cinema. Ou pelo menos foi o que eles garantiram. O destino era a Austrália, mas o imperador D Pedro II precisava de mão de obra para terminar uma estrada na serra, e contratou a todos. Eles ganharam empregos, casas e carinho. Ficaram por aqui mesmo...

My father’s family came from two branches: Stülpen (simplified as Stilpen) and Kersten, both arriving in Rio de Janeiro in 1827 on the French boat Justine. They were heading to Australia, but emperor D Pedro II needed working force to build a road in the hills, so everyone was hired. They got jobs, nice houses consideration. So they decided to stay here anyway...

Petrópolis é um pedacinho do céu distante 50 minutos do Rio. Muitas pessoas moram lá e trabalham na capital, pois é mais rápido chegar ao Centro do que muitos bairros, como a Barra da Tijuca ou o subúrbio. Além disto, o clima é ótimo e a vida mais barata. Petropolis is a bit of Heaven 50 away from Rio. A lot of people chose to live up there and work in the capital; it’s faster getting to Downtown than from many locations, like Barra da Tijuca or the suburbs. And plus, it’s a wonderful weather and a reasonable cost of living. German tradition made from Petropolis a musical center. Boys and girls start early their studies, either playing or singing. E então é Natal. Eu passei a maioria dos fins de ano no meio dos primos, comendo o pão feito no forno a lenha e bebendo leite de verdade (hoje parece água misturada com farinha). A árvore de Natal era um pinheiro enfeitado com frutas e doces. A iluminação vinha de pequenas velas, deixando tudo muito mágico! Meu pai era o mais solicitado garçom do Copacabana Palace. Ele era o favorito de várias personalidades, como Eddy Duchin, Edith Piaf, Nelson Rockefeller ou Walt Disney. Eu ainda tenho guardados muitos autógrafos, como os de Neil Sedaka, Nat King Cole, George Boulanger e tantos outros! Bem, eu não virei um cantor, um banqueiro nem um violinista, mas certamente o gene que carregava a informação da animação foi passada para mim.

My father was the most appreciated waiter in Copacabana Palace. He was the favorite of such personalities as Eddy Duchin, Edith Piaf, Nelson Rockefeller or Walt Disney. O que realmente me atrai nos parques de Orlando e em especial no complexo Disney é a excelência no item direção de arte. Não é apenas o cuidado com o detalhe, mas o trabalho que vai desde a concepção até a realização esmerada e a capacidade de consertar o que não deu certo. Estas equipes sabem muito bem que um erro vale por mil acertos.

What really astounds me in Orlando theme parks and in special Disney complex is the search for excellence when art direction is involved. Not only attention to the details, but the heavy work from conception to the careful production and the capacity to fix what didn’t work. These teams know so well a mistake is worth one thousand successful rides.

Os membros dos parques se esforçam para que cada um, individualmente, tenham uma estadia perfeita. Isto realmente aconteceu com o meu amigo Mario, que deixou cair seu óculos no laguinho do It’s a Small World, e o gondoleiro não o conseguiu resgatar. O Mario deu o nosso endereço do hotel e esqueceu o evento. Dias depois, já no Rio de Janeiro, ele me ligou para que eu o encontrasse em sua casa. A administração do parque mandou para ele um par novo de óculos de valor superior, italianos. Eles foram ao hotel e descobriram o endereço dele! E um cartão com o texto: “Lembranças do Mickey Mouse!”

This actually happened to my friend Mario, Who dropped his sunglasses into the pond of It’s a Small World ride, and the gondolier wasn’t able to find. Mario gave him our hotel address and forgot all about it. Days later, already in Rio de Janeiro, He called me to meet him at home. The Magic Kingdom administration had sent him a new pair of expensive Italian sunglasses! They had checked at the hotel his address! And a card with the message: “Best regards from Mickey Mouse!”

Havia uma lenda que impedia Frank Sinatra de vir ao Brasil; se o fizesse, ele seria assassinado. Mas, já no fim de sua carreira, ele quebrou o encanto aqui no Estádio do Maracanã, então com lotação de 220 mil pessoas. Eu estava lá, entre milhares de pessoas que quebraram o recorde do Guinness, no dia 16 de janeiro de 1988. Chovia bastante, entretanto o show entrou na hora. Um minuto antes, Deus decidiu fazer daquela uma noite perfeita e parou de chover. Sinatra subiu ao palco e usou estas mesmas palavras mágicas. A emoção foi tanta que ele esqueceu a letra de Strangers in the Night, mas nós tratamos de cantar por ele! Um cometa que passou nas nossas vidas, representando a era dourada da nossa juventude.

There was a legend that kept Frank Sinatra away from Brazil; if he came down, he would be assassinated. But, next to the end of his career, he dismissed the spell here at Maracanã Stadium, then supporting 220 thousand people. I was there, among those thousands who broke the Guinness Book record, on January 16 of 1988. It was raining cats and dogs; however the show should be aired on time. One minute before, God decided that night should be perfect and the rain stopped. Sinatra stepped on stage and proffered these same magic words. The emotion took him so deep, Sinatra forgot the lyrics of Strangers in the Night, but we rushed to sing it for him! A comet that passed through our lives, representing the golden age of our youth.

O destino reserva a glória para alguns e o esquecimento para outros. Este nome apagado pelo tempo poderia ter tido o mesmo brilho dos irmãos Lumiére, pois foi ele o verdadeiro inventor do cinematógrafo em 1892, mas não conseguiu renovar sua patente. Fazemos aqui a nossa homenagem aos pioneiros desta arte que abrange todas as outras.

Fate reserves glory to some and oblivion to others. This name erased by time could shine even brighter than brothers Lumiére, for he was the true inventor of cinematographer in 1892, but couldn’t renew his copyright. So we rend here our tribute to the pioneers of this art that engulfs all others.

Quando o clássico cruza com o popular, muitas vezes herdamos um tesouro musical preciosíssimo, capaz de inspirar para sempre as gerações. Um destes é o inglês Albert Kètelbey, inspirado pela expansão da Grã-Bretanha pelo mundo, que compôs todos os tipos de canções exóticas. Leroy Anderson, americano de Massachusetts, também tocou os corações, especialmente das crianças. Lembro-me de um 78 rpm que tinha o Relógio Sincopado de um lado e o Gato Dançarino do outro. O disco quase furou de tantas vezes ser tocado! Pelo menos para mim, ele inspirou muitos desenhos animados que eu produzi; em especial a série Antunes e Bandeira, postada nesta página.

When classical meets pop, we often inherit a precious musical treasure, apt to inspire generations forever. One of these is Albert Kètelbey, inspired by Great Britain expansion throughout the world, who composed all kinds of exotic songs. Leroy Anderson, from Massachusetts, also reached our hearts, especially children. I remember one 78 rpm with the Syncopated Clock on side A and the Waltzing Cat on B. The needle almost bore a hole in it! At least for me, he was the source of inspiration to many animated films I directed, mainly the series Antunes & Bandeira, posted in this page.

Estamos na véspera de outro fim do mundo. O último estava marcado para 31 de dezembro de 2000, mas deve ter perdido o trem. Imediatamente foi adiado para o final do calendário Maia, no dia 21 de dezembro do ano que vem. As comparações com as outras predições, com os textos sagrados são adaptadas para que a tal data fique marcada como o fim de grande parte da Humanidade. É interessante que os descendentes dos Maias não pensem assim, mas esta é outra história. Logo teremos outra data fatídica adiante... E tudo isto nos leva ao maior vidente de todos os tempos, Michel de Notredame. Vamos dar uma olhada nestas previsões em quanto temos tempo. Ou não.

Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso: OK, vamos evitar repetir aquela piada comparando o tamanho do seu nome à sua genialidade. Picasso é aquele pintor que todo mundo pensa fazer igual; os olhos estão no lugar errado, os copos são quadrados, os retratos como que caricaturas. Um longo caminho o separava do “pintar o que vê” com “pintar o que sente” ou ainda “pintar o que quer”. Um gênio desde o berço até o último dia da sua vida tumultuada. Ele não foi modelo de comportamento para ninguém, como tantos da sua estatura. Hoje ficamos com o seu legado: uma infinidade de quadros, cenários, estatuetas, desenhos... Pensando bem, ele até que poderia ter vivido o dobro.
