I’m going to share with you a tip to writing articles. I’m going to share with you a four step sequence that gets me in such a state almost every time. Here it is:

Clarity

Leverage

Confusion

Power

Clarity

First, I ask myself “What do I really want to get out of this, and whats stopping me right now from getting it?”. Almost every time I tell myself that I just want to write productively for six hours and enjoy doing it. Usually I find whats stopping me is I am focusing on the negatives of article writing instead of the positives. I realize that if I want to enjoy the process, I need to think of all the benefits I get from writing articles. This gets me pumped up. This means I’m ready for the next step.

Leverage

It’s not enough to realize what I want, and how to get it. I have to actually feel compelled to take action on this information. Here’s how I do it. First, I think of how painful it would be if everyday I did something I didn’t enjoy doing. I imagine how poor of a quality of life I would have if I never broke through resistance, and had a weak will. Scary! Then, I imagine how great it would be if I could work all day while having a smile on my face and feeling good about myself. I also think about how cultivating this habit will improve other areas of my life.

What I have essentially done is changed how I feel about the task at hand. I’ve deliberately thought about how bad it would be to not change my state, and how good it will be to change my state to get what I want. It’s the old pain/pleasure principle. Just doing these two steps alone will make the article writing process much easier. But let’s not just stop there.

Confusion

Obviously, I linked negative feelings to writing for 6 hours. I realized I wanted to enjoy the process instead. I realized how much pleasure I would gain from it, and how much pain I would avoid if I made it happen. But wouldn’t it be great if I completely removed the negative feelings from my mind? Yes it would. Here’s how I do it instantly. You can do the same, and you’ll find you automatically start laughing and have a smile on your face when you sit down to write your article. First, I picture myself sitting at my desk, writing my articles. Then I picture myself with clown makeup on, writing the articles. Then I create a picture of me writing the articles upside down, on the ceiling. In my mind I imagine doing cartwheels at breakneck speed, shouting out the words to an article, birds flying in the window whispering research into my ear, and any other crazy scenarios I can come up with.

Every time I do this, it makes me chuckle. I have now changed my association of sitting down and writing an article from dread to comedy. When I actually go to sit down and write the article, I am no longer thinking it will be tedious – because the silly pictures pop into my head, and makes me laugh. I have created a whole new feeling to associate with writing articles. Now there’s only one thing left to do.

Power

It’s sufficient to create confusion to laugh at the process instead of dread it. But wouldn’t it be even better if, when you sit down to write your articles, you felt powerful? Imagine what it would be like if every time you wrote an article you increased your sense of fulfillment in life?

The trick is after you have created confusion about the pain and pleasure you link to the task at hand, you can now replace it with a new, empowering alternative. I use a metaphor. I imagine that every word I write is a brick, which is building a golden pyramid. Each article presents another story on this pyramid. At the top of the pyramid I see my ideal self. Each article helps bring me closer to my ideal self. Each article is a way for me to strengthen my discipline, commitment, will power and focus. Each article also generates me money, which I can use to invest in other business opportunities, to invest in my own personal development, or just to spend on things that bring me joy in life.

Review of the Technique

First, I decide what I want to get out of writing my articles. The ability to work all day and feel happy. Next, I motivate myself to actually want to strive to achieve this, by thinking about how pleasurable it would be to do so, and how painful it would be to not do so. Then I interrupt the feelings I currently link to the process at hand, by thinking of a ridiculous and silly picture. This “unlinks” any negative feelings I would have about setting down and writing. What is left is for me to “relink” my feelings to something extremely positive, and empowering, so I feel with each article I write, I fulfill my sense of purpose.

I want you to know something. The first few times I tried doing this, it didn’t really work. That was because it was a new process I wasn’t used to. I didn’t have a “golden triangle” metaphor yet created, I wasn’t sure how to create confusion (by thinking of a funny picture), and part of me was skeptical that it would even work. But whenever I try something new, I always make a 7 day commitment. I just say, “For the next seven days, I am going to try this. I don’t care if it works or not. I am just going to do it whole heartedly for the next 7 days, and then evaluate its usefulness.” After trying this process for three days, I started getting good at it. By the end of the week, It would work for me almost every time.

How to focus on one particular market or category of items. This is where you will build your business. If you want to go into that category and have a dominating market presence, there are a few things that you absolutely must do:

1. Market Research

Completed item listings is the first place you will start doing your research. You will need to find out:

What items are selling?

How much these items are selling for. What is the average selling price?

Who are the top sellers in your market?

What techniques or strategies are they using to sell their items?

Once you have done your research, you will have a great knowledge base to start from. You can decide what items to sell, how much you can afford to pay for them, and what are the best listing strategies for selling the most products in your market. Doing some in depth research of your competition is always the first place to start before enter any market. Don’t waste your time finding product sources and listing items if you do not know 100% that you will be able to make good profits in the market.

2. Find multiple product sources

The biggest problem when people started selling on eBay was keeping enough product in stock. If you have one supplier and if he didn’t have a certain product in stock, then you to stop selling it. This is the wrong way to go about doing business on eBay. You must locate multiple product suppliers. eBay Powersellers don’t just have a list of wholesale suppliers, they now how to find suppliers. That knowledge is extremely powerful.

3. List your auction with competitive pricing strategies

Many new eBay sellers incorrectly assume that they must have the lowest price in order to compete in any market. This is completely untrue. Price is not the determining factor in dominating a market. So when you are pricing your items, you want to make sure that your price is low, but not so low that you aren’t making enough profit. I like to try to make a 30% more profit on any item I buy; meaning that if I buy an item for $20, I want to sell it for at least $26. Your margins will differ greatly from market to market and sometimes you can offset lower margins by selling more volume.

4. Work hard for the best reputation in the market.

This is the true key to market domination. Many sellers are willing to pay more to buy an item from a reputable seller than someone they do not know and trust. I personally would rather pay 10-15% more to buy from a seller with 780 positive feedbacks and 100% of them positive, than to buy from someone with 12 feedbacks and 2 negatives. In order to generate the best reputation, you will need to keep your feedback as close to perfect as possible. You do this by having excellent customer service. Answer all questions as quickly as possible, ship quickly, and handle all complaints quickly and courteously.

eBay Sellers have available tools which can block some potential buyers from their listings. The effectiveness of each of these tools varies and it is always possible for blocked buyers to create a new eBay ID and buy from a seller and help to prevent just a few potential troublesome buyers. Sounds crazy to block away bidders from your eBay auctions? Blocking bad buyers is not a must, but it helps to smoothen your eBay transactions.

METHOD 1

Here’s how to block a bidder / buyer from bidding on your auction:

1. Login into your eBay and go to your “My eBay” page.

2. Go to My Account, then select “Site Preferences”.

3. You can see Selling Preferences option, then Buyers Requirement, click Edit.

4. In the Buyer Requirements, you can see “buyer requirements exemption list” otion and click it.

5. To set up a list of bidders/buyers who will no longer be able to bid on, or purchase, your listings you can click “Add an eBay member to my Blocked Bidder/Buyer List”.

6. You can block up to 5000 User IDs. To block a member, enter the member’s user ID and click Submit and to remove a bidder/buyer from your blocked list, just delete the User ID in the text box and click the Submit button.

METHOD 2

1. Login into your eBay and go to your “My eBay” page.

2. Go to My Account, then select “Site Preferences”.

3. You can see Selling Preferences option, then Buyers Requirement and click to edit you. Select buyer requirements Preferences.

Buyers without a PayPal account

Block buyers who don’t have a PayPal account from bidding or buying your items. And if you are willing to consider checks or money orders from bidders with good feedback, you can always exempt buyers on a case-by-case basis.

Buyers with Unpaid Item strikes

A seller can block a potential bidder who has too many unpaid item strikes. Sellers can choose the number of strikes and the number of months. This requirement can help you avoid bidders and buyers with a history of not paying for the items they have agreed to purchase.

Buyers in countries to which I don’t ship

Using this buyer requirement block is especially important if you ship domestically only. Block buyers who are registered in countries to which you don’t ship. This requirement can help you avoid buyers who agree to purchase your items without realizing you don’t ship to their location.

Buyers with policy violation reports

Sellers can block potential bidders who have violated too many of eBay’s policies such as feedback extortion. This requirement can help you block buyers who have been reported to have violated eBay policies.

Buyers with a negative feedback score

This requirement can help you avoid buyers who have received more negative than positive feedback from other eBay members bidding on your item.

Buyers who may bid on several of my items and not pay for them

Consider selecting this requirement if you are selling expensive items and don’t want to sell over a certain number to any single buyer. Learn here.

RentACoder is a place where software buyers and software coders meet to do business. RentACoder was founded and is owned by Ian Ippolito. He is the Chief Executive Officer and holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the University of Central Florida. The offices are located in Tampa, Florida, USA.

Doing business in RentACoder is sheer simplicity. Buyers simply post their requirements on the site and coders (programmers and writers) make a bid for these requirements. The buyer hires the coder who they feel is best qualified and pays them when the job is completed. Think of RentACoder as a giant online marketplace where people with software needs find coders to meet those needs. It provides excellent opportunities for software programmers and freelance writers to put their hard-earned skills to use and earn cash. One of the marvelous things, writers can actually find work and get paid without ever leaving the comfort of their home.

How much can a coder make?

Fees vary depending on the nature and scope of the particular project. The smaller jobs can cost $20 or less while the larger jobs can pay you thousands of dollars. The sky is the limit in RentACoder. You get paid according to your skill level and your capacity and readiness to work hard and deliver the goods on time.

How do I get paid?

One of the best things about RentACoder is that they take care of the money side of your business transactions with buyers. They have a marvelous instrument called “Safe Project Escrow” which assures coders that they will be paid. Here is how it works: Let’s say a buyer selects your bid from the dozens of bids received. After approving your bid, the buyer puts the agreed upon amount in escrow, meaning the funds are automatically forwarded to the RentACoder website. Once your work is complete and the buyer approves and accepts it, the funds are released to you. Payment is usually sent a few days (two or three) after your selected payment period. There are three payment options on RentACoder:

(1) Snail Mail Check
(2) Western Union
(3) Pay Pal

How can I improve my chances of getting future work?

Put your best foot forward

When you sign up to RentACoder, there is a portion in the sign-up procedure that asks for your resume. Unfortunately, a lot of newcomers do not give enough attention to their resume. This is a major mistake. At the beginning and with no track record on the site whatsoever, your resume is one of the few things that buyers can study to assess your capability to do their job. When writing your resume, you should remember to be clear and concise. After all, you are a writer and clarity and brevity should be two of your strongest points. Don’t simply put down a laundry list of past positions and tasks you have handled in your career. Give brief descriptions to each of them, particularly about the writing aspect of that particular job.

Prepare an intriguing bid letter

Every time you make a bid for a project, you will have to write a bid letter. Make sure the first line in the bid letter catches the attention of the buyer. Make it lucrative and interesting. Another thing that buyers look for is speed and efficiency. Let the buyer know that you can tackle their particular job efficiently and quickly. Give them a firm commitment about meeting the deadline and assure them that you will be communicating with them regularly in the course of the job, if only to give them updates.

Send buyers your best samples

Although not every buyer requires coders to send samples when they bid for a project, it is always best to send them samples anyway. Your samples will give buyers an idea of how you write and whether your particular style fits their project.

At the beginning, aim low and sacrifice income

The most difficult time to get jobs on RentACoder is at the beginning when you are new to the site. That is because you are an unknown entity, with no track record on RentACoder whatsoever. You may have a glowing resume and impressive samples, but many coders want to know how you work given the parameters and conditions of RentACoder. For this reason your first priority should be getting a few jobs under your belt. Don’t disregard the small projects (small pay, small deliverables, etc.). You may also bid for the major projects but, as a newbie, your chances of getting the smaller jobs are better. Initially, your objective will be to establish a track record. Start with some simple projects that you can do easily. Don’t make the size of the payment a priority. In fact, you will be much better off if you don’t pay any attention to the payment at all. Once you have a number of projects under your belt – and potential buyers will take note of that – they are more likely to regard you favorably because you have a history of delivering the goods.

Deliver quality work

In every job you do always give the buyer your best work. There are two reasons for this. First, you make the buyer happy and increase the likelihood that they will use you again for future projects. Second, the buyer will give you a good rating after completing the job. On RentACoder, a coder’s rating is one of the main factors that buyers consider when handing out jobs.

Establish a good reputation

Aside from ratings, buyers also post comments on their coder’s work after they have completed the job. These comments are another thing that buyers look at since they convey much more than what a numerical rating can say. For instance, getting a 10 rating will tell prospective clients that you have satisfied your previous customers but the comments portion is where they will learn about your professionalism, attitude and working style.

Exhibit versatility

Since the projects on RentACoder run the gamut of practically any subject imaginable, it always pays to exhibit versatility to prospective buyers. Show them you can successfully write about a wide range of topics and that you can adapt different writing styles, be it serious, humorous, or provocative.

Meet all your deadlines

Most of the buyers on RentACoder have deadlines and they expect the coders they hire to deliver the work within the agreed-on deadline. This is a basic requirement for any professional writer. Deadlines have to be regarded as almost sacred. No one wants to hire an undependable writer. If you want to be regarded as a professional and paid like a professional, you have to act like a professional and meeting your deadlines is part of that package.

Give regular updates

In line with being a professional, freelance writers must also give their clients regular updates about how the work is progressing. Buyers will always want to know where their project stands. Most of the time, they just need to know that the writing is going smoothly and that you, the writer, will have no trouble meeting the deadline. However, they also want to know about any problems you may encounter, especially if these problems will hamper you from meeting the deadline or delivering quality work.

Be honest

As a professional writer, never assume to know what the buyer wants if you are unsure about it. If you are not clear about something, ask. Don’t go ahead and write about something if you are not absolutely sure about what your buyer expects. If you do and you are wrong, the buyer may ask you to rewrite the project all over again.

Make suggestions

Making suggestions tells the buyer that you have given their work some serious thought and they will appreciate the gesture.

Go the extra mile

This is a general rule for success in virtually every human endeavor. Go the extra mile and deliver more than what is expected. This does not mean writing more articles than the buyer wants. What it does mean is proofreading your work and putting in the extra time it takes to make necessary revisions. Do everything you can to insure that the work you submit is impeccable and represents your best work.

Do you have some apprehension about your marketability? Do you wonder if you have what it takes to do freelance work? The best part of freelancing is that there is a niche for almost every skill. If you are good the demands upon your skills will be greater than the supply you can produce, you can identify your skills and make the most of them for the greatest profit.

How to make contacts and find freelance jobs? The immediate answer is technology. The days of typewriters are gone. The days of waiting for a response from a client by postal service are gone. We live in a world of modern technology. Documents can be written, saved, and transmitted over thousands of miles in just a few short seconds. Words can reach thousands of people instantly. There is email now. In fact, you can chat online with clients on a real time basis. Information is easy to find, store, and send. That is why you can live anywhere you like as a freelancer. You are not confined to any one geographical address as long as some type of internet access is available.

Another advantage of modern technology is the ability for freelancers and their clients to find one another. There are many websites where a client can post a job and a freelancer can instantly respond to it. Again, geographical distance is not an issue. A client can be in Japan and the freelancer can be in sunny Florida and they can have a successful partnership agreement. The answer to global connections and opportunities is technology. This allows a freelancer to work for clients around the world. This opens a multitude of opportunities to find freelance work.

What sort of niches are out there for freelancers? The possibilities are endless. I have listed some of the more common niches. They are like Writing, Web design, Voice-Over Work, Video and Screen Capture Video, Research, Help Desk Management, Engineering and Architecture, Marketing, Advertising, Legal and Paralegal, Translation, Training and Development, Graphic Design and Art, Software Development and Programming, Management and Finance. This is by no means a complete list. Rather it is a general overview of common areas in which people freelance. Find your own niche and go with it. The advantage of finding yours in the areas mentioned is that there are thousands of jobs posted everyday.

People who have created a full time prosperous career in freelancing did not jump into it blindfolded. They had a plan. They executed the plan and now they are reaping the benefits. The plan started with research. Reading this book is a good beginning. Next, start looking around. See how many freelance jobs in your area of expertise are on the internet. Below are a number of sites you can look into:

Allfreelance.com

Aquent.com

Elance.com

Craigslist.org

RentACoder.com

Ifreelance.com

Bullhorn.com

Guru.com

Monster.com

Sologig.com

Some of these sites charge for access, others are more like bulletin boards. Look around and see if your skills match with any of the jobs posted. Even if you don’t see many jobs requiring your skills, don’t give up. It could mean that your niche is in an untapped area. If so, Congratulations! This means that you will have a lot less competition. When you find various jobs that match your skills, look at how much these jobs pay. The amounts will vary. As clients become familiar with your work and you build trust and a reputation, you can begin to demand more money.
