Chapter 9: May 3, 1977 – Athens

Even though I’d been up late the night before, I woke up early. I’d brought a small wind-up alarm clock from home, and before drifting off to sleep, I’d set it for 8:00 AM — plenty of time to shower, eat breakfast, and meet the group for our departure. As it turned out, I didn’t need the alarm. I was awake at 5:00 AM!

Here in the Plaka, the ancient neighborhood sprawling below the Acropolis, the city never really went quiet. The shuffle of pedestrians on the street below my balcony mixed with traffic noise from the avenue up the way, and together they roused me out of my sleep. I wasn’t used to a big city. I’d grown up in the country, at the end of a dirt road, where the loudest thing most mornings was a rooster.

I lay in bed for a few minutes, but then the sun came up and poured through my open balcony door, and that settled it. By 5:45 I was dressed and heading down the stairs. Not a soul was in the breakfast room or the lobby, so I went outside to see what Athens looked like before it woke up. As I turned left out the door, my friend Doug was heading out at the same moment, and we joined up to go explore.

I’d picked up a paper map of Athens the night before at the hotel reception, and between the map and the Acropolis looming on the hill above us, we had no trouble finding our way to the ancient sites. It was 6:00 AM, and the only people on the streets besides us were shopkeepers getting ready for the day. Heading down Adrianou Street, we hit our first ruin — a circular structure about thirty feet high, topped with a bronze tripod, standing in a small wooded park to our left. I recognized the Corinthian columns decorating it, but only because of a Humanities and Art History course I’d been required to take at FJC before the trip. Later I learned the monument marked the spot where a man named Lysicrates had once set up a trophy after his boys’ choir won a competition. It went up in 335 BC, commissioned by the choregos — the wealthy Athenian citizens who financed choral and dramatic productions in ancient Greece. It was just one of many such monuments that had once lined the Street of Tripods, which ran from the Sanctuary of Dionysus around the base of the Acropolis.

Turning left, Lysicratous Street led a few hundred yards toward a massive open field littered with toppled columns. But first we had to cross Vasilissis Amalias Avenue — a wide, chaotic river of traffic. Cars, buses, scooters, streetcars, and pedestrians all fought for space, drivers weaving between lanes, honking, squealing tires, slamming brakes. The ruins sat right across four lanes of it, but we decided our legs were worth more than the shortcut and walked fifty yards up to the nearest light. Once across, the ruins were entirely ours. Not another soul in sight.

The field was enormous — ten acres, maybe — littered with broken marble. But before we even got to the scattered ruins, an intact arch stood there as if placed on purpose to welcome us in. The Arch of Hadrian rose sixty feet above our heads and stretched at least forty-five feet wide, untouched by the collapse that had claimed everything behind it. It turned out the Athenians had built it in the early 130s AD to mark Roman Emperor Hadrian’s third and final visit to the city. Greek letters were carved into the pediment above us — it really was all Greek to me at the time — but I later found out the inscription facing the Acropolis read, “This is Athens, the former city of Theseus.” I completely missed the matching inscription on the other side, facing the open field: “This is the city of Hadrian and not of Theseus.” Scholars still argue over what the two lines were really saying — whether they were meant to write off the old city and its mythical founder, or to elevate Hadrian to co-founder alongside him.

Past the arch, in the middle of that desolate field, fifteen columns rose toward the sky, capped with ornate Corinthian tops and still holding up a few massive stone lintels. I’d seen them from a distance the night before, driving in from the airport, but now, standing at their base in the morning light, I just stopped and stared, mouth open. This was the Temple of Olympian Zeus.

A plaque nearby, its paint faded from decades in the sun, told the story. Construction started in 520 BC and ran for about ten years before stalling — only the foundation and a handful of column stubs had gone in before the project was abandoned for centuries. It picked back up in 174 BC under King Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who hired a Roman architect to redesign the whole thing in Pentelic marble, with 104 Corinthian columns in a new floor plan. Then the architect died, and his vision died with him — the temple sat unfinished for another hundred years. By 86 BC, with Rome on the rise and Greece in decline, a Roman general plundered the site and hauled one column back to Rome as a trophy, installing it in the Temple of Jupiter on Capitoline Hill. It took another century, and the arrival of Hadrian himself, before the temple was finally finished, in 132 AD. He marked the occasion with a gold-and-ivory statue of Zeus — and, not modestly, one of himself right beside it. The temple lasted only about a hundred years before Germanic invaders sacked it in 267 AD. From there it was slowly picked apart for other building projects, and by the time the traveler Cyriacus of Ancona passed through in 1436, only twenty-one columns were still standing.

Time was getting away from us, and we had a breakfast meetup with the group back at the hotel. So after a few photos with my Instamatic, we hustled back toward the Hotel Plaka.

That breakfast was my first taste of a European morning meal. By the time I got to the hotel dining room, most of the Chorale group was already seated and eating. I looked over the spread: olives, something wrapped in slick green leaves, yogurt, honey, jam, several kinds of bread, butter, salami, juice, coffee, water. That was it — no scrambled eggs, no bacon, no grits. I settled for a very strong cup of coffee and some bread and butter.

Breakfast done, I went up to my room, brushed my teeth, and grabbed what I needed for the morning tour. Before long our big bus pulled into our narrow street, we climbed aboard, and watched out the windows as the driver threaded it through tiny lanes and sharp corners back to the main road. As we passed Hadrian’s Arch and the Temple of Zeus again, our tour guide picked up the microphone and started telling us all about the ancient temple I’d already explored on foot, hours before anyone else was awake.

Maybe it’s the first pint of Guinness poured at the Gravity Bar, with Dublin and the Wicklow Mountains spreading out to the horizon. Maybe it’s the quiet hush inside the 800-year-old abbey on Iona, or the whistle of a steam locomotive climbing into Snowdonia. Whatever the moment is, travelers on this tour tend to describe it the same way: this is why I came.

If you’ve ever dreamed of experiencing Ireland, Scotland, and Wales in one unforgettable trip — without the stress of planning logistics, chasing trains, or wondering if you’re missing the “real” version of these countries — this is the tour built for you.

Three Countries, One Seamless Journey

Eighteen days. Three nations steeped in myth, music, and history — one small group, one dedicated guide, and zero guesswork.

This isn’t a whirlwind bus tour where you snap a photo and move on. It’s a deep, unhurried immersion into the landscapes and cultures that make the Celtic Isles unlike anywhere else on Earth — designed by someone who has walked every mile of it himself and knows exactly where the magic happens.

Galway & the West of Ireland – Buskers, pubs, and easy charm to start. Ride a ferryboat to the Aran Islands, stand at the edge of the Cliffs of Moher, and wander the Dingle Peninsula’s “forty shades of green.”

Kilkenny, Glendalough & Dublin- Kiss the legendary Blarney Stone, walk the peaceful monastic ruins of Glendalough in the Wicklow Mountains, and toast Ireland’s capital with a pint at a Temple Bar pub.

Edinburgh- A short flight across the Irish Sea into centuries of history along the Royal Mile, with Edinburgh Castle watching over it all.

The Highlands & Islands- St. Andrews, home of golf; the haunting grounds of Culloden Battlefield; a Loch Ness cruise beneath Urquhart Castle; and a ferry to the sacred island of Iona from the harbor town of Oban.

The Lake District & North Wales- A peaceful overnight in England, then a spectacular finish in North Wales — medieval castles, a working slate mine, the flower-filled Bodnant Gardens, and a historic steam railway through Snowdonia National Park.

Why Travelers Keep Coming Back

What makes this tour different isn’t just the itinerary — it’s how it’s run. Every detail, from the trusted hotels to the restaurant reservations, has been personally scouted and chosen. Groups stay small (just 6 to 18 travelers), so you’re never herded through a site behind a guide holding up a flag on a stick. You’ll have plenty of structured sightseeing along with generous free time to wander, shop, or sit with a coffee and watch the action of everyday life.

Travelers who’ve taken David McGuffin’s tours to Ireland, Scotland, and Wales consistently point to the same things: a guide who goes out of his way to help with anything you need, drivers who make even long travel days comfortable, and the sense of getting to really experience a place rather than just checking it off a list.

“The Scotland/Wales trip was wonderful. Scotland is so beautiful, and we loved the small towns where we stayed. Dave was a great guide and so willing to help us in whatever we needed.”

Lavon, Colorado — Tours to Scotland and Wales

That personal touch extends to custom and private journeys as well. One couple who arranged a private Ireland and Wales itinerary with David described being pleasantly surprised at the value of having their own dedicated guide and driver, complete with a detailed advance travel planner. They came away impressed by the attention to detail, the quality of the accommodations, and the freedom of skipping the lines, luggage scrambles, and rigid schedules that come with typical group travel — while still enjoying first-class comfort every step of the way.

Is This Tour Right for You?

This trip is built for travelers who want to experience Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, not just glimpse them from a bus window. Most days call for light to moderate walking — a couple of miles on level ground, with some hills, cobblestones, and standing time built in — so a reasonable level of fitness makes the trip far more enjoyable.

If you love history, folklore, dramatic coastlines, castles, good food, and even better company, you’ll feel right at home.

You’ll have no worries when you travel with David McGuffin and Exploring Europe. We take care of you and try to make your journey pleasant and stress-free from the moment you sign up for one of our tours. Visiting Europe and its wonderful destinations is not difficult. The hard part is the six months beforehand trying to plan the adventure on your own: the hotel reviews that contradict each other, the train connection that looks fine until you realize it’s a 40-minute walk between stations, the restaurant that turned out to be a tourist trap with laminated menus in four languages. That’s the part I’ve already done for you.

This year marks my 49th year of traveling to Europe and my 26th year of organizing tours there. I plan and design every itinerary myself, and I keep revising them, because knowing a place well is the only way to show it well. Below are some key questions travelers actually ask me before they sign up for a tour.

Why Our Groups Are Small

My groups range in size from 6 to 18 people. A small group is more flexible than a typical big-bus group, allowing us to see, do, and experience more. We provide a unique travel experience by treating you as individuals seeking to learn about your destination. A group this size can eat in a family-run trattoria that would never seat fifty. It can change plans on a rainy afternoon. And your guide will know your name by the time we head out on our first adventure. Small group travel is the only way to go.

What Makes Our Guides Different?

I still lead many of my tours, but when I can’t, I choose trusted guides who share my love for European travel. What I look for is a passion for teaching, not a script. Our guides like people, they like talking about the places we’re standing in, and they’d rather answer your question than finish their prepared remarks. Our goal is simple: that you get wrapped up in the joy of travel and come home having actually learned something.

How We Find the Restaurants We Take You To

I’ve spent years poking around Europe’s nooks and crannies in search of excellent food, good wine, better beer, and sparkling water. I guarantee you’ll experience some outstanding restaurants serving amazingly fresh, local dishes in an unpretentious manner. Breakfast is included every morning, and we include about half of your lunches or dinners, enough that you eat well without our schedule swallowing every evening. The other meals are yours, and by day three you’ll have your own opinions about where to go.

Why We Don’t Try to See 12 Cities in 8 Days

Because you would see none of them. A twelve-city itinerary is really an eight-day bus ride with photo stops, and the pace has a cost: you check out of a hotel before you’ve learned the way to the corner bakery, and the afternoon you’d have spent wandering gets spent on a highway instead. I’d rather give you fewer places and the time to actually know them, so there’s time to sit in the square, notice how the light changes, and go back to the café where the owner recognizes you. I labor over every detail of the itinerary so we’re not waiting needlessly in a line, hunting for a site, or circling the block looking for a hotel. What we buy with that restraint is the part people actually remember.

What’s Actually Included in Your Tour?

Nearly everything: accommodations, admissions into attractions, transportation once we’re there (airfare is the one exception), all breakfasts and about half of your lunches and dinners, and all tips and gratuities. The price you pay is all-inclusive, which means you will not be nickel-and-dimed with pricey optional excursions, driver and guide tips, or the surprise line items that show up on so many group tours.

There’s also a best price guarantee. Once you pay your deposit, the advertised price is locked in. If my costs rise or the exchange rate jumps, that’s my problem, not yours. We will never come back and ask you for more money.

Who Are My Tours NOT For?

My tours are for active folks. We will put in several miles of walking and standing each day to experience the sights and immerse ourselves in the destination’s culture. But don’t worry, you will have plenty of time to slow down and experience the locale on your own and at your own pace, too! Each day you’ll have a window to explore on your own: visit another museum, linger over a quiet dinner, or just find a bench and enjoy the ambiance.

So, if you’re looking for a resort week by the pool, or you need to stay seated on a coach most of the day, this isn’t the right tour and I’d rather you know that now. If you’re willing to walk a few miles for an experience or a view worth having, you’ll fit right in.

Where Will We Sleep?

I choose hotels that are clean, safe, centrally located, and have private baths, often family-run places that carry the local flavor of the area. Many of them have hosted our groups year after year and know us by now. I’ve personally selected every one for quality, cleanliness, comfort, and location. Occasionally that means stairs instead of an elevator, bringing your own hair dryer, or a room without air conditioning. The trade is a safe, central hotel with real service, a good night’s sleep, and a genuinely European stay rather than an interchangeable box out by the ring road.

What If I Have to Cancel?

Your deposit is fully refundable for a specified period spelled out in your tour contract, and you’ll get the full details when you sign up. A full refund is available within 30 days of the date we receive your application and payment or deposit. If you must cancel within 90 days of departure, your deposits and payments can be applied to a future tour. And if Exploring Europe cancels a tour, you choose: a full refund or credit toward a future trip.

So, Will You Come With Me?

We believe you can see and do more on a well-planned group tour than you could pulling it all together yourself. Add up the hours you’d spend comparing hotels, decoding train schedules, and second-guessing restaurant reviews. Then consider that we do this for a living and have had decades of practice refining it. My mission has always been to get Americans out into the wider world through travel that’s engaging rather than exhausting.

So pick a country you’ve been thinking about. Come find out what a small group, a good guide, and an unhurried itinerary feel like. I’d be glad to have you along for the adventure.

It’s not glamorous, it’s not exciting, and it’s not fashionable. But it’s one of the simplest ways to protect yourself — and your trip — from disaster.

It Starts Before You Even Leave Home

I still remember packing for one of my very first tours back in 1997. Amid the rush of last-minute errands, the bank run for traveler’s checks, and the scramble to get everyone out the door, one step always stood out: the “passport and moneybelt check.” Before we ever climbed into the car for the airport, we made sure everyone had their valuables secured. That habit has stuck with me for nearly three decades, and it’s saved me — and the travelers on my tours — more headaches than I can count.

What Actually Goes in a Moneybelt

A moneybelt isn’t for everything in your wallet. It’s for the things you truly cannot afford to lose: your passport, credit cards, medical information, and the cash you are carrying around. I keep my passport tucked inside a small plastic sandwich bag before it goes in the belt, just to keep it dry and protected. If your passport is ever lost while you’re out of the country, you’ll be looking at days of delays and a mandatory trip to a U.S. embassy to get a replacement. That’s not how anyone wants to spend their vacation.

As for cash, I don’t recommend carrying hundreds of dollars around, whether it’s in your wallet or your moneybelt. I do keep a small amount of U.S. dollars tucked away, mostly out of habit and for a bit of comfort — it’s nice to have something familiar when you land back home. But the bulk of your spending money should be in the local currency, exchanged at an airport or a reputable location, or ATM machine once you arrive, not carried in bulk from the start.

Wear It, Don’t Just Pack It

The key word is “wear.” A moneybelt does you no good sitting in the bottom of a suitcase. It needs to be under your clothes, against your body, out of sight. I keep mine on throughout the day when I’m out exploring, and I transfer what I need once I’m settled “in country” and in my hotel room. The goal is simple: your most essential items should never be in a bag that can be snatched, unzipped, or set down and forgotten.

Don’t Let Your Guard Down

I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it: don’t trust everyone you meet on the road. Most people you’ll encounter while traveling are kind and helpful, but it only takes one bad moment — a distraction, a crowded platform, a friendly stranger with the wrong intentions — to lose something important. That’s the whole point of a moneybelt. It’s not about assuming the worst of people; it’s about making sure that if something does go wrong, it doesn’t wreck your trip.

The Bottom Line

A moneybelt is one of the least expensive, least complicated things you’ll pack for a trip abroad — and it might be the most important. It keeps your passport, cards, and cash close, secure, and out of reach of pickpockets and thieves who specifically target tourists. Make it part of your routine before you even leave the house, and keep it on throughout your travels. It’s a small habit that provides real peace of mind, and after all these years of touring Europe, it’s one I’ll never travel without.

Of all the places I’ve traveled across Europe, Paris keeps its place at the top of my list. It has the grand boulevards, the boutiques, the outdoor cafés, the monuments and museums everyone comes for — and it has the Mona Lisa, the Eiffel Tower, and Notre Dame. But none of that fully explains why it’s my favorite. What does is something quieter: the way Paris rewards you for slowing down.

It’s a City of Neighborhoods, Not Just Sights

Ask me why Paris beats out every other city I’ve visited, and my answer is that it isn’t really about the landmarks. It’s that Paris is made up of dozens of distinct neighborhoods where I can step away from the tourist crowds entirely. You should absolutely see the big attractions — but there’s so much more to the city than one more museum or one more church.

One of my favorite escapes is the Canal Saint-Martin, a canal dug in the early 1800s to move grain and building materials into the city. I once spent an entire late-September morning just walking one bank and back down the other — watching kids float leaves and toy boats, moms pushing strollers, cafés and bistros getting ready for the lunch crowd, all happening beneath the amber and gold leaves of the ubiquitous plane trees. No horns, no traffic, no tour groups. Just Paris living its ordinary life.

I feel the same way about the streets near the Eiffel Tower, Champ de Mars, and Pont de l’Alma, where 18th-century blocks between Rue Saint-Dominique and the Seine are full of actual Parisians going about their day. After reading Julia Child’s biography, I learned she once lived in a small upper-floor apartment on Rue de l’Université. I still find myself walking that street, looking up, wondering who lives there in her old apartment now.

Slow Down — You’ll Enjoy It More

Paris can wear you out. I’ve led groups through two packed days trying to hit the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre Dame, the Tuileries, Luxembourg Gardens, a Seine cruise, Montmartre and Sacré-Cœur, the Champs-Élysées, and a picnic on the Champ de Mars — and by day two, travelers from age 13 to 80 are all asking for the same thing: more time to breathe, to slow down, to get a break.

That’s why in the past decade I’ve moved toward longer stays and fewer forced stops per day. The sights will still be there. What people remember afterward isn’t how many boxes they checked — it’s the afternoon they didn’t rush, sitting at an outdoor café with a drink, or enjoying a quiet corner in a park on a shaded bench.

A City Built for Eating Well

Paris might be the best city in the world for a meal, whatever form that takes — a picnic along the Seine, a coffee and croissant to start the day, or a proper multi-course dinner. My rule of thumb: skip anywhere with a big multilingual menu posted outside. That’s a sign the kitchen isn’t cooking for repeat customers — it’s cooking for someone who’ll only ever eat there once.

Instead, look for where the locals eat. Avoid the tourist traps in the Latin Quarter, around the Louvre, Champs-Élysées, or up on Montmartre. Instead, find a secluded neighborhood and a small restaurant. Look for handwritten menus of the day, often sitting out front on a black chalkboard. I love starting with escargot and a good baguette, then moving to confit de canard — duck leg and thigh cooked slow in its own fat until it’s falling off the bone. Near Notre Dame, several small places tucked into a sandy little triangle of a square called Place Dauphine serve a seasonal formule menu — try the bœuf bourguignon or onion soup (but only if you’re there in winter or fall).

A few practical notes that catch people off guard: drinks don’t come with refills or much ice, though tap water is free if you ask for une carafe d’eau. Meals are a social event, not a race — your waiter won’t rush you, and you shouldn’t rush yourself either. And a service charge is already built into your bill, so tipping is a nice gesture, not an obligation.

Even the Hard Days Are Worth It

I was in Paris in April 2019, just days after the fire at Notre Dame. The mood on the streets was nothing like the Paris I knew — shock and quiet disbelief where there’s usually so much energy. Rounding a corner onto Rue Saint-Jacques and seeing the burnt-out cathedral for the first time stopped me in my tracks, and I wasn’t the only one. Even now, with most of the restoration complete, that image is part of the city’s story — a reminder that Paris isn’t just postcards, it’s a living place that endures.

So, Go — But Go Slowly

Climb the Eiffel Tower. Walk the Champs-Élysées. Stand in front of the Mona Lisa if you must. But don’t let the checklist run the trip. Find a bench in a park, a table at a sidewalk café, a canal to walk beside. Paris rewards the traveler who’s willing to slow down and just be in it.

That’s why, after all these years and all these cities, Paris is still my favorite. Next month, I’ll tell you my secret to landing a table with a view at the Eiffel Tower… for a reasonable price. Until then, au revoir.

The itinerary is carefully designed to include the major landmarks and must-see attractions, while also giving travelers the opportunity to customize their experience with a free day in each city.

While in Paris last month, my colleague Jamie and I took advantage of one of those free days by participating in a cheese and wine tasting with a local cheesemonger in the charming Montmartre neighborhood.

Our host had carefully curated a selection of eight exceptional French cheeses, each thoughtfully paired with five French wines and a Champagne. Throughout the tasting, she shared fascinating insights into how each cheese is made, the region of France where it originated, and the unique characteristics that make it special. She also offered practical tips on selecting quality cheeses and choosing wines that complement them.

The experience was both educational and delicious. Not only did we gain a greater appreciation for France’s rich culinary traditions, but we also enjoyed a memorable afternoon immersed in the local culture. We left with a newfound confidence in pairing cheese and wine—and feeling pleasantly full and completely satisfied.

If you’re looking for a unique activity during your free day in Paris, a cheese and wine tasting is an experience I would highly recommend.

It took Spain a long time to get on my travel radar

I’d been to France dozens of times, Italy even more. But once I started leading tours of the Iberian Peninsula, I kept coming back—and I think I finally know why. There’s a looseness here, a no-rush-about-it attitude that is hard to find anywhere else in Europe. The food is incredible, the history is layered and complicated, and the people seem genuinely happy to have you wandering their streets. that’s my Best of Spain tour in a nutshell.

Over thirteen days on my Best of Spain tour, we cover eight cities and towns across the length of this massive country — from the modernista madness of Barcelona in the northeast all the way down to the sun-baked, flamenco-fueled streets of Sevilla in the southwest. Here’s a taste of what’s waiting for you.

Barcelona: Gaudí, Gothic, and the Grand Promenade

We begin in Barcelona, and honestly, it’s hard to imagine a better opening act. On our first evening, I like to walk the group through the Eixample neighborhood to see Gaudí’s so-called “Block of Discord” — a stretch of modernista buildings that are about as far from boring architecture as you can get. Over dinner at one of my favorite tapas spots, you start to get the feel of the city: loud, social, and very much alive after dark.

Day two is all about Gaudí’s great unfinished cathedral, La Sagrada Família. I’ve stood in front of that building more times than I can count, and it still stops me cold. The façades, the towers, the way light moves through the interior — there is simply nothing else like it in the world. After that, we wander the narrow lanes of the Gothic Quarter, out to the harbor promenade, and then the rest of the day is yours. Barcelona rewards wanderers.

Madrid: The Royal Capital at Its Best

A high-speed AVE train whisks us from Barcelona to Madrid in just a few hours — and yes, the train is genuinely part of the fun. Madrid is the heart of the country, and we give it the time it deserves: four nights.

On arrival, we head straight for the Palacio Real, the Royal Palace. With over 3,400 rooms, it is the largest functioning royal palace in Western Europe. The sheer scale of the place tends to make jaws drop. The next morning, we meet a local guide at the Prado Museum for a personal tour of its greatest works — Velázquez, Goya, and El Greco. No rushing. No tour bus crowds. Just good art and good conversation.

The rest of your time in Madrid is yours to fill. Find a café on the Plaza Mayor, duck into a neighborhood taberna, and discover the Retiro Park. Madrid is a city that rewards people who slow down.

Segovia: Cool, Quiet, and Completely Worth It

One of the best decisions I made years ago was to add a day trip to Segovia to this tour. Just a short train ride north of Madrid, Segovia sits at nearly 3,000 feet of elevation — which means even in summer, the air is crisp, and the pace is distinctly unhurried.

The Roman Aqueduct is the star of the show: 2,500 feet long, nearly 100 feet high, and built from 20,000 precisely cut granite stones stacked without a drop of mortar — two thousand years ago. No scaffolding, no power tools, no mortar. It still stands. We also wander up to the fairy-tale Alcázar, the hilltop castle that is said to have inspired Walt Disney, and the elegant Gothic Cathedral right on the main plaza. For lunch, we sit down to the regional specialty — roasted suckling pig. Don’t be shy about it. It’s extraordinary.

Toledo: The City of Three Cultures

Toledo is only thirty minutes from Madrid by high-speed train, but in every other sense, it is a world apart. For centuries, Christians, Muslims, and Jews lived and worked side by side here, and you can feel that layered history in every lane and doorway.

The Cathedral of Toledo is one of the great Gothic churches of the world — massive, dark, full of treasures. But I love Toledo just as much for the wandering: the crooked medieval streets, the sword-makers’ shops, the views from the old city walls out over the Tagus River below. We make a full day of it before heading back to Madrid for the evening.

Granada: Where the Moors Left Their Greatest Gift

A fast train carries us south to Granada and the heart of Andalucía. On arrival, we visit the Royal Chapel, where Ferdinand and Isabella — the monarchs who united Spain and sent Columbus west — lie in their lavish tombs. It’s a surprisingly intimate and moving place.

But the next morning is what everyone has been waiting for: The Alhambra. I’ve been through it many times, and I still find it breathtaking. This sprawling Moorish palace complex, perched on a forested hilltop above the city, is without question one of the most beautiful places on earth. The tilework, the carved stucco, the reflecting pools, the Generalife gardens — the artistry is extraordinary. Plan on spending the better part of the day.

Nerja: One Day, No Agenda, Just the Sea

After the grand palaces and cathedrals, I always love watching the group arrive in Nerja. This little beach town on the Costa del Sol is our one deliberate day off — no sightseeing agenda, no guided tours, no checklist. Just a pretty cliff-top town, sandy beaches, a small central plaza, and the Mediterranean stretching out in every direction.

Find a chair and umbrella on the beach. Read a book. Have a long lunch with a glass of something cold. That’s the whole plan, and it’s a good one.

Arcos de la Frontera: Spain’s Most Spectacular Hilltop Village

The mountains between Granada and Sevilla are dotted with whitewashed villages perched high in the hills, and my favorite of all of them is Arcos de la Frontera. We set up here for an afternoon and evening, and the views from the old town ramparts — out over the Andalusian countryside — are the kind that make you reach for your camera and then realize no photo will do it justice.

The cobbled lanes are ancient and narrow, the whitewashed houses glow in the afternoon light, and dinner at the top of the hill, watching the sun go down over the valley, is one of those moments the group always talks about afterward.

Sevilla: A Grand Finale

We save the biggest finish for last. Sevilla — capital of Andalucía and arguably the most passionate city in Spain — gives us two full nights to take it all in.

On our first day, we walk the whitewashed lanes of the Barrio Santa Cruz, the old Jewish quarter, and visit the Cathedral of Sevilla — the largest Gothic church in the Christian world, with a tower you can climb for sweeping views over the rooftops. That evening, we will settle in for a live flamenco performance. After a few days in Andalucía, you start to understand where this music comes from — the emotion, the drama, the raw intensity of it.

Our second day features a tour of the Real Alcázar, the Moorish-influenced royal palace that has been home to Spanish monarchs for more than five hundred years. Then the afternoon is free — wander, shop, sit on a terrace with a fino sherry and watch the city go by. That evening, we gather for our farewell dinner, raise a glass, and toast thirteen days of Spain done right.

Ready to Go?

My Best of Spain tour runs in September/October 2026 and again in spring and fall 2027. Small groups, authentic dining, and no rushing through the good stuff. Find dates and details here.

Spain rewards the traveler who pays attention to the food, the history, and the unhurried rhythms of daily life. Thirteen days is just enough time to fall in love with this country. Plenty of my travelers have come back for more.

I hope to see you there.

Greetings from Mykonos, Greece – It’s my first time visiting here, so I’m doing a little exploring for a few days by myself. I arrived here in late April, a few weeks before the heavy tourist season is due to begin.

My hotel, The Poseidon, is a small resort with a pool, bar, sunbeds, umbrellas, and more. Within 10 minutes, you are in the heart of Mykonos old town, with the clubs, restaurants, windmills, nightclubs, speakeasys, and all.

The weather has been beautiful, with clear blue skies and gorgeous sunsets. But, it has been chilly, mostly in the 60’s, so certainly not beach weather. But, notice the swimmers and sunbathers on the beach in the photo below. I took that photo when I rented a 4-wheeler Quad-Tracker and took a spin around the island.

I’m told that in two weeks, prices will skyrocket, the hotel, clubs, and pools will fill up, and I will not recognize the place. So, for me, I’m glad I am here now and not later. The town is tidy, all painted white, even the streets, and loaded with chic shops, bars, cafes, and restaurants. All the dining is outdoors, and there is plenty of variety.

2. Why I enjoy Exploring Europe.

Many of you know my history. I learned to love travel, music, and teaching all at once in college. My mentor, Don Thompson, was my professor and the college choir director. He took my fellow singers and me on a tour to Europe and Israel, and it was a life-changing event. When I returned, I knew I wanted to teach, be a musician, and travel. And that’s exactly what I’ve done for the past 48 years! You can read my story here.

3. What to do about airline flight cancellations?

Airline cancellations seem to run rampant this year. It seems we hear about flight cancellations every few weeks due to weather, civil unrest, war, and mechanical problems. The exceptional ice, snow, and winter storms have wreaked havoc on many airports in the USA over the last few months.

As flight consumers, we have little recourse when an airline cancels our flights. Worldwide air carriage rules and regulations often favor airlines over consumers. If an airline cancels a flight, all they technically have to do is refund the money you paid for the flight. An offer to reschedule is usually available, and nowadays, many airlines are proactive and automatically reschedule you on another flight, even if it is not convenient.

Airline delays and cancellations are bound to affect you at some point in your travels, so plan ahead and take it in stride. Here are my suggestions:

Plan to arrive at your destination a day early. That way, if you are delayed, you’ll hopefully not miss the event you are flying to get to.

Purchase travel insurance to cover possible cancellations and delays.

Join an airline loyalty program and stick to flying with them. You are more likely to get assistance if you are a valued flyer.

If your flight originated in the European Union (EU) or was on an airline residing in the EU, you are entitled to compensation. EU Regulation 261/2004 entitles you to financial compensation based on the length of the delay or cancellation. Keep this in mind the next time your travels take you to Europe.
