Look, guys (and girls): Valentine's Day just isn't that hard.
You don't have to think outside the box or order something like a pajamagram. (Seriously, do not ever order anyone a pajamagram. Unless the message you are sending is "I don't ever want to see you naked again.")
Flowers. Candy. Kisses. Boom. Done.
I'm going to leave you to your own devices on the kissing and I know better than to predict flower preferences, but here's a quick list of where to get some of the best sweet treats in town.

Fine Art of Intention Feng Shui: Happy Birthday to All Dogs!: Chinese New Year Day 2. On the second day of this two week celebration the Chinese pray to their ancestors and are extra kind to their dogs.

Itty Bitty and I are rescues, so our human Mom who adopted us really doesn't know our birthdays.

We celebrated with a bite of fancy sponge cake made from a Vietnamese birthday (it's their New Year too). Mom gave me a blue cupcake sweater and Itty a pink cupcake sweater made especially for wiener dogs.

While watching E!'s The Talk, I found out that pet owners were cloning or stuffing their pets via taxidermy, so they could almost live forever. My mom who adopted me loves me so much, she wants me to live furever too; however, I don't want a mini-me or stuffed toy version of me sitting on her mantle.

If only the owners could donate those monies to saving un-loved pets,...

Itty Bitty and I are watching the Houston Texans and the Cincinatti Bengals run on a big green lawn during a Play-Off game. I wish I could play chase and fetch the ball with them.

The Texans are represented by Toro, a blue bull. His Zodiac sign is Taurus, his weight is "big enough to BULL you over," and he's six feet tall.

Why can't Houston have a dog as a mascot like the Saints' mascot? His name is Gumbo and his birthplace is listed as "Cooked up by the Louisiana Restaurant Association." NOLA better not be cookin' up dogs. If you check out his weight on the website, his response is, "How Rude!"

Geico commercial with Taco Bell Chihuahua (2002)

Gidget, the Taco Bell Chiuahua, started her career at the age of three in 1997 with her first Taco Bell commercial (voiced by Carlos Alazraqui). The dog made the phrases popular-- "¡Yo quiero Taco Bell!" ("I want Taco Bell!"), "Drop the chalupa!", and "¡Viva Gorditas!," meaning "Long live Gorditas!" Much to my chagrin, Taco Bell stopped using Gidget for their commercials in 2000, because some Latin Americans accused the dog of being a stereotype.

Gidget made a comeback performance as the Taco Bell dog for a 2002 "Geico" commercial along with the Geico Gecko. In 2003, she appeared on the big screen in "Legally Blonde II: Red, White, and Blonde" as Bruiser's mom. Yes, I whimpered during the movie when Bruiser's mom was captured and was being used for product testing.

Thanks to a wonderful couple and Adopt A Pet Houston, this white little Chiweenie got adopted right in time for Christmas. His mother was rescued from under a house when she was pregnant and we fostered her. Sure enough she had puppies on Labor Day. All five puppies have now been adopted!

Paws on Patios’ hard work has paid off. The city now allows a variance to the city ordinance that prohibits dogs on premises of food establishments. Ziggy’s Bar + Grill on Fairview passed a health permit inspection Thursday so you may see dogs at the Montrose restaurant today.
Patrick Key, Houston Department of Health and Human Services bureau chief of consumer health services, confirmed that Ziggy’s is the first to get the variance. Key credits Paws on Patios commitment to the cause to getting the variance for eateries that want to allow dogs in outdoor eating areas.
Key said his department surveyed other cities that allow dogs on restaurant patios and found that a tiny percentage of restaurants are interested in getting permits to allow diners to bring their pet dogs. “But the people who do want to do it, really, really want to do it,” Key said.
Here is the official language:
Type of Variance and Houston Food Ordinance Section Affected: 20-21.28. (f)(1).
Pursuant to Section 20-19 (e) (1), the above named food establishment applies to the health officer for a variance of Section 20-21.28 (f) (1) of the Houston Code of Ordinances which prohibits animals on the premises of a food establishment. The application must be submitted with a non-refundable pre-operational inspection fee of $110. An inspection will be conducted to determine compliance with the conditions of the requested variance.
If pursuant to Section 20-21(e) (2), the health officer grants a variance to Section 20-21.28 (f) (1) to allow dogs to be present in the outdoor patio area of a food establishment, the food establishment shall comply with the following conditions to ensure that a health hazard or nuisance will not result from the modification or waiver:
a. Except as allowed under 20-21.28 (f) (2), no dog may be present inside the food establishment or on any playground area of the food establishment.
b. A separate entrance must be provided from the outside of the food establishment to the outdoor patio so that a dog will have direct access to the patio without entering the interior of the food establishment or any playground area of the food establishment.
c. An approved sign shall be posted at the front entrance of the food establishment so that it is easily visible to the public. The sign must state: “DOG FRIENDLY PATIO: DOG ACCESS TO OUTDOOR PATIO ONLY.” The sign shall also include “To report violations, contact Houston Department of Health and Human Services at 832-393-5100.”
d. Doors at all entrances to the outdoor patio from the interior of the food establishment must be equipped with self-closing devices and kept closed when not in use.
e. No food preparation may be performed in the outdoor patio area, except that a beverage glass may be filled on the patio from a pitcher or other container that has been filled or otherwise prepared inside the food establishment.
f. Hand sanitizer shall be available to customers and employees in the “Dog Friendly Patio.”
g. The outdoor patio must be continuously maintained free of visible dog hair, dog dander, and other dog-related waste or debris. The outdoor patio must be cleaned with animal friendly chemicals at the beginning of each shift during which food or beverages will be served. Waste created from a dog’s bodily functions must be removed and cleaned with animal friendly chemicals immediately after each occurrence. Appropriate materials for this purpose shall be kept near the designated outdoor area. All dog waste shall be placed in insect and rodent proof containers located adjacent to the patio and must be disposed of outside of the food establishment in an approved covered waste receptacle. Equipment used to clean the outdoor patio must be kept outside of the food establishment.
h. While on duty, wait staff, bus staff, or other food handlers at the food establishment may not pet or have contact with any dog.
i. A dog must be kept on a leash and remain in the control of the customer while in the outdoor patio area. The dog must have proof of current rabies vaccination. The dog must also have a current license issued by the local jurisdiction where the dog resides. Contact the Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care (BARC) at 713-229-7300 for information about a City of Houston Dog License. Any human bite from a dog shall be reported to BARC.
j. A dog is not allowed on a seat, table, countertop, or any other surfaces that customers use in the outdoor patio area.
k. A dog is not allowed to have contact with any dishes or utensils used for food service or preparation at the food establishment.
l. Food establishment personnel may not serve any food to the dog. Kibble, biscuits, and edible treats may be given to the dog by the customer. Water for dogs shall be provided by the food establishment in a disposable container.

Crime Stoppers Rewards Up to $5,000 for Dogfighting. Call (713) 222-TIPS!

When you think of Crime Stoppers, you probably think of crimes like murders and sex offenses. Add animal cruelty to that list. Several animal advocacy groups held a news conference today to announce their new partnership with Crime Stoppers.

Dogfighting and animal cruelty is something Harris County has been dealing with for some time now. Authorities busted a big ring more than a year ago that led to numerous arrests. But they continue to find the corpses of dogs believed to be used in fights.
Now, Crime Stoppers is stepping in as another tool in this battle. This is Crime Stoppers Executive Director Katherine Cabiniss.
"If you see signs of abuse, an animal with injuries that are going unreported or untreated, call Crime Stoppers, or call the police. If you know of a dogfight that is going to take place in your community, or if you know someone who is planning a dogfight, or is attending a dogfight, call Crime Stoppers, or call the police."
Tina Lundquist Faust is with nonprofit group PetSet. Even though dogfighting continues to plague the Houston area, she believes the situation is improving.
"I think that there is progress being made. I think because so many people are aware and because of events like this it creates awareness and people recognize that it is a crime and that something can be done."
With Crime Stoppers now getting involved, people will also have access to rewards.
"It’s people that are in the rescue groups, that are in the adoption centers that see the abuse that may have a link to abusers and they’re maybe not sure where to go, but through Crime Stoppers, they have a way to turn these people in and get them off the streets."
The state is also trying to do its part. State Senator John Whitmire says the legislature passed several laws related to animal cruelty, including one that allow them to keep track of people who may be breeding for criminal purposes.
"We passed an anti-puppy mill legislation. If you have eleven or more breeding females, you will be regulated by the state of Texas and have standards. That was a huge step forward. We passed in the Senate an animal registration list. It was modeled after the sexual offenders registration list, knowing that these individuals that abuse animals will most likely then repeat those crimes, often against humans."

Rescue in Labor on Labor Day

Itty Bitty Juno (yes, a pregnant puppy of about 1 year old) was living under a house in the Houston Heights in extreme heat conditions. Houston was issued record heat warnings of 100+ degrees. This reminds me of my rescue from the dangerous heat.

We assume that she was lost or was dumped while being 60 days pregnant. All she had on was a flea collar.

Super heroes Angie Hasara and Laura Finkeldey of Bungalow's Fitness helped Adopt a Pet Houston trap her after trying for nearly 2 weeks with Teresa Schwartz Osborn, Teresa Bues, Kathy Bartlett, Bebe Butters BlogDog, Randall Neighbour and Laura Finkeldey.

On Labor Day, the team united via telephone to help my mom and Lisa of Adopt a Pet Houston deliver five healthy puppies. Mom is doing fabulous and the puppies are growing like crazy. Stay tuned for pics and adoption information for the puppies. I know my mom is going to keep Itty Bitty Juno...and get her fixed of course!

Pets, Peeps, and Portraits for Pink at Urban Tails on September 18

Urban Tails will be converted into a pink photography studio and gallery on Sunday, September 18, 2011, at 1618 Webster Pets, Peeps, and Portraits for Pink in honor of native Houstonian, Lori Brewer of Waterford Portraits. Brewer, who passed from breast cancer on July 4, positively impacted animal non-profit organizations with her gift of capturing the love and light of people and pets.

Now, four professional photographers will hold a tribute and photography fundraiser for Brewer’s favorite charities. Jack Opatrany, Sonya Sellers, Melissa Hammonds, and Kim Hartz who all specialize in family and pet photography, like Brewer did, are offering private mini sessions for $50. The professional photographers will offer indoor studio settings and outdoor studio settings designed by Buchanan’s Native Plants. Each photographer has a different setting/sitting style which is explained on www.portraits4pink.org.

The proceeds will benefit Brewer’s preferred non-profits-- the Breast Cancer Research organizations, Homeless & Orphaned Pets Endeavor (H.O.P.E.), Homeless Pet Placement League (H.P.P.L.), Lucky Dog Rescue, Pup Squad, Lone Star Shih Tzu & Lhasa Apso Rescue, Pet Patrol and Corridor Rescue.

Brewer’s clients will also bring and showcase their favorite portraits by Brewer over the many years that she photographed their pets. The event will also offer prize drawings for both pet lovers and families. Jewelry such as photo frame charms and photo lockets can be ordered with private portrait session along with portrait packages, art, and other merchandise. Activities will include bra pong, pony tail donations for natural wigs for women undergoing chemotherapy, and make-overs by professional stylists from Craft Salon. Delectable treats such as pink lemonade and pink sweets from Food Network’s Top Chef’s: Just Desserts Rebecca Masson of Fluff Bake Bar.
