Breckenridge is calling this 2010/2011 ski season a wrap with an incredible winter season! Overall the Breckenridge Ski Resort saw huge snow totals that kept the ski resort in near perfect conditions until closing day April 24, 2011 with a 101 inch base! This was not only a big year for all the powder hounds but also for all the skiers/ boarders who love social media and their smartphones!

Breckenridge was part of the Vail Resorts who launched the brand new EpicMix pass this season. Epicmix announced their final numbers a few days ago and they are quite impressive! Of all the Vail Resorts using the EpicMix pass Nearly 100,000 guests activated EpicMix accounts this season, generating over 35 million social impressions and racking up over 55 billion vertical feet of skiing and snowboarding at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Heavenly, CA. EpicMix passes not only tracks all your vertical feet but it combines technology to digitally capture your ski and ride experience and share it with friends and family via facebook and foursquare like “buttons”. Beginners – Breckenridge - Check out the Silverthorne run. This casual green cruiser on Peak 9 can be accessed from the Quicksilver lift. It is perfect for skiers and riders that are looking to take it easy and not have to worry about ending up on a more advanced trail. It goes to the base of Peak 9 where you can stop in to the Quandary Grill on the Main Street Station plaza for a quick bite to eat before heading back onto the slopes. See lodging next to Quicksilver. Keystone – Get on Schoolmarm. This is a very long green run that winds its way across Keystone Mountain and will give you a sweet, easy way to get down the hill.
Intermediate – Breckenridge - Loaded with nothing but mellow blue runs, lower Peak 7 is the perfect place for intermediate skiers, or as a warm up for advanced and expert snow riders before getting on the black and double-black runs. For the wider, easier blue runs try Wirepatch and Lincoln Meadows. If you want something a bit more challenging we recommend Northstar, Claimjumper or Pioneer. Keystone – When you are ready to step it up a notch give Wild Irishman a go. With the option of hitting bumps on one side of the trail and groomers on the other, the choice is yours as to how aggressive you want to be.
Advanced – Breckenridge - For snow riders that want to challenge themselves without going overboard we recommend checking out Chair 6. Lines can be a bit long right after the opening bell, but it is worth the wait. There is a broad expanse of single-black runs that will keep you on your toes without getting too hairy for most people. When you get off the chair head hard left and go to Way Out. This run skirts the ski area boundary and is frequently un-tracked. Steep and fun! Keystone – Head back to the North Peak and hit Cat Dancer. With lots of bumps your legs will burn, but in a satisfying way.
Expert – Breckenridge - For those that are ready for the ultimate Breckenridge challenge head up the Imperial lift and head over to Upper Peak 7. This stout traverse weeds out all but the most die-hard skiers and boarders, but is absolutely worth the effort. This terrain provides nothing but double-black terrain and will open your eyes to the joys of serious snow riding. As you get farther over you will hit Whales Tale, which takes you right down the guts of the bowl. You might have to go back to lower Peak 7 for a well deserved break. Keystone – One of the best parts of Keystone Resort is its fabulous tree skiing. They pulled out all of the stops when it came to creating beautiful gladed runs that go on forever. Some of the best of these are in the Black Forest on The Outback. Runs include Bushwhacker, Badger and The Grizz. These are for experts only, but if you qualify, definitely check these out. WEAR A HELMET!

So now where to stay? They say that location is everything, so let’s start with the closest lodging to the event. I would say that to be right in the mix, staying at Main Street Station in one of the rooms overlooking the plaza would be ideal. St. Patrick's Day Celebrations in Breckenridge- Kiss Me, I'm Irish!

Breckenridge celebrates St. Patrick’s Day, just a wee bit this March 17, 2011! Whether you are born and raised in Ireland or have a touch of Irish in you, celebrating St. Patrick’s day in the high country will have you saying “Tabhair pog dom taim Eireannach” (Kiss me! I’m Irish) before the end of the evening!

Start your day off at Burke and Riley’s which will open at 7am with a giant Irish buffet breakfast. Mark Burke, one of the owners, says he will be serving up a traditional Irish breakfast, the most important meal of your day! Later in the day, enjoy the sounds of the old country with bagpipers from Denver’s Emerald Society. Burke and Riley’s will also have live Irish music, a DJ and Celtic dancers throughout the afternoon and evening. A small cover charge will get your first “beor ghlas” (green beer) and a collector’s Burke and Riley’s t-shirt. Of course there will be Guinness on tap as well.

Head over to Fatty’s Pizzeria, a local’s tradition for St Patrick’s Day lunch. The corned beef simply falls apart because they braise it and then slow cook if for eight hours. It is served with cabbage and other vegetables that have been slow cooked as well. They open at 11 and serve at least 100 pounds of corned beef that afternoon! Yum!

Napper Tandy’s owner Anthony Bulfin, born and raised in County Tipperary Ireland, and rumored to be a direct descendant of St Patrick, hosts another gigantic celebration beginning with a true Irish buffet with corned beef and cabbage with soda crackers and Guinness on tap. The buffet opens at 11am - 4pm. Live Celtic music will begin at 12pm – close. The decks at Napper Tandys will be filled with revelry and have nice views of the mountains. At 5pm, be dazzled by Breckenridge’s own Celtic Steps dancers – ages 5 – 15, which have been professionally trained by members of the cast of Lord of the Dance, and will perform traditional Irish dances until 6pm. Larry Copeland will be performing his outstanding jazz but promises it will have an Irish twist, as he and his crew have been working on U2 covers! Getting green at the blue will certainly have you saying “Eirinn go Brach” ( Ireland forever) for the rest of the night!

Nordic Dinner Sleigh Rides

Nordic Dinner Sleigh Rides: The Nordic rides are a bit different and just as enjoyable. They are located deep in the national forest about 6 miles behind the Breckenridge Golf Course. The drive at night was fun for the family as we had never been back in the forest that far before. Once we arrived at the center, Al, the owner greeted us and handed us a warm blanket. The ride through the forest at night was fantastic. In the distance we could hear the howls of the coyotes, which disturbed the sled dogs housed on site. Lots of howling made for an even more fun journey. The sleigh traversed in and out of tree lined paths until we came upon our dinner cabin. Dinner is homemade on site, we especially enjoyed the outstanding steaks they served. The dinner was – delicious! We were entertained, before dinner was served, by Mountain Man, who told stories about the old days of Breckenridge. If you decide to go to the late show, be sure to eat something small before your journey as it is a while before dinner is served. AND bring you own bottle!

Breckenridge Stables Sleigh Rides

Breckenridge Stables also offers an incredible sleigh ride with colorful custom built sleighs drawn by a team of Belgian, Clydesdale or Percheron draft horses. Inside the sleigh, wrapped in a warm blanket we could hear the sleigh bells in the crisp mountain air. The horses take you up through the paths of the National Forest of Peak Nine in Breckenridge, a picturesque journey. It’s time once again for the best time of the television year – Super Bowl! Whether you are just about the Football or you love the commercials, here is what you need to know about the Superbowl and the BEST places to watch the game in Breckenridge!

Super Bowl XLV will be the 45th annual edition of the Super Bowl in American Football, and the 41st annual championship game of the modern-era National Football League (NFL). The game, to be played on February 6, 2011, will pit the AFC champion Pittsburgh Steelers against the NFC champion Green Bay Packers to decide the NFL champion for the 2010 season. The game will be held at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Kickoff time is approximately 6:25pm EST. This will be the eighth appearance in the Super Bowl for the Steelers (who hold the record with 6 Super Bowl wins) and the fifth for the Packers (who hold the record with 12 overall NFL titles, including 3 Super Bowl wins and 9 league titles prior to the Super Bowl-era).

Ok, now the hard part – where to watch the big game, or in my case the commercials! Luckily, Breckenridge offers many, many places to watch the game (commercials) from. And more fortunate is that the game will begin about 4:25pm Mountain Standard time, so you can get a great day of skiing in beforehand!
Now, every bar in town will be offering a beer or drink special, and seating will be first come first served, so get off the slope and find your seat early. And of course, pregame fanfare will be broadcasting at least three hours before kick-off.

Downstairs at Eric’s if you want to bring the family. The kids will not get bored with the huge arcade in the lobby. The prices are reasonable, the food is homemade and the portions are hearty. Eric’s is Steelers country – as the owner Eric is a fanatic – so be prepared in your green and gold.
Napper Tandy’s is a spacious Irish Pub with no particular allegiance to either team. This is, after all, American Football! The Guinness will pour, and the crowd will gather not only in the pub, but also downstairs at the Salt Creek restaurant for delicious BBQ food. 2011 International Snow Sculpture Contests Breckenridge, Colorado!

Imagine 20 ton blocks of snow come to life over 65 hours to become incredible works of art! That is what the 21st Annual Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Competition is all about! During 1/25/2011 – 1/30/2011 the teams of artists will be working round the clock to free their creations from the ice. Or join us 1/30/2011 – 2/6/2011 for the final viewing week.

These international teams are coming to Breckenridge from all over the world to see who can produce the best work of snowy art! This year we have 15 teams from eight different countries (United States, Canada, Mexico, Germany, Sweden, China, Austria and Australia) will participate in the 21st Annual Budweiser Snow Sculpture Championships at the Riverwalk Center.

When the sculptures are finished on Saturday, January 29, a panel of well-known artists and patrons of the arts serve as judges. Awards are presented to the first, second and third place sculptures on Sunday, January 31. Awards are also given for People's Choice, Kids' Choice and Artists' Choice.

Lowdown: Epic Mix pass allows for you to be checked in at different Vail Resorts and check all of your skiing statistics online. Keep Up With New Year's Resolutions While on Vacation in Breckenridge

Did you know that 90% of Americans who propose a New Year’s resolution decide to get in better shape? If you are one of those people - did you know that only 1% actually follow through? So to keep this new goal, I decided to research ways to make the Exercise word a bit more fun and they are perfect activities to do while in Breckenridge.

Here are great workouts that take place around Breckenridge that you can do while on vacation!

On Monday, in Frisco at the Alpine Dance Academy, dance teacher extraordinaire Kelly Monohan taught myself and a few other brave moms Hip Hop for one hour. We basically learned about 1 minute of dance moves in those 60 minutes…to the top 40 hit remake of the Dirty Dancing super song - “I Had the Time of My Life“, - new version by Flo Rida. By the end of the hour - we had really worked up a sweat and didn’t even realize we were…exercising. The bonus? I sound very cool around my 11 and 12 year old when the song plays on Sirius Top 40 - sing out loud because I obviously already know all of the words from the past version and proclaim that I “dance to this song in Hip Hop class“.

On Tuesday, I took advantage of public skating time at the Steve C West Ice Arena during lunch. I suppose we all fell in love with the beauty of figure skating when Dorothy Hamill was introduced to the world in 1976 as an Olympic skating star, but then as the spokes person for “Short and Sassy” shampoo - with her super cute haircut that we all decided to try. So I hit the skating rink with some friends for lunch and a funny thing happened - we all worked so hard at not falling that we were basically strengthening our core in order to stay upright. Yes, we did indeed fall - a lot, but between giggling around the rink for and hour or so and eventually trying to spin and skate backwards, we really worked up a glow.

Wednesday I thought I should get outside and enjoy some nice weather, so I headed up to the Nordic Center on Peak 8, strapped on some 165 cross country skis (with edges) and headed out to what can only be described as a winter wonderland. If the beauty doesn’t take your breath away, the workout will. Just be sure to watch the path and direction others are taking, as I drifted into the wrong lane going the wrong way was scolded at by obvious regulars. Afterwards I enjoyed a nice warm drink and a granola bar inside the hut - a reward for a very good work out. See other outdoor winter activities.

Thursday , I headed back indoors to Body Pump. Now it sounds hard , because it is, however there are a couple of girls in the office that have dropped at least two dress sizes by going once or twice a week for their lunch hour. In these intense 60 minutes, you work out to loud music in a pre-choreographed barbell class. So I headed into class and tried my best to keep up and I was soon comfortable and delightfully challenged. Did I just say delightfully? During exercise? After the class I was remarkably renewed and focused for the rest of the day at work. Remember to bring a change of clothes and save time to rinse off - whew!

Friday, I decided to drop in to the newly formed Curling League over at Steve C West Ice Arena. The game, affectionately called Ice Chess, seemed so much fun this past Winter Olympics in Vancouver as it was televised in prime time daily. Whether I was “throwing” or casting the stone or feverishly working my broom, it was a good workout and very competitive and, I must say, our team won three to two. We named our team Curls Gone Wild…

The 2010 Dew Tour's first stop was in Breckenridge, CO over Dec. 16-19 and there was high flying action, elite athletes and big brand new tricks and throw downs. Although the Dew Tour has moved on and its next stop is Jan. 20, 2011 in Killington, Vermont, the Dew left some fond memories of the killer action that took place on Breckenridge Ski Resort's slopes.
