Ahhhh...summertime in Breckenridge, turquiose blue skies, cool temperatures , hiking, biking and now LIVE MUSIC in the PLAZA!

Main Street Station has announced the first ever Summer Concert Series. The series kicks off on June 6th from 3 - 7 in the Main Street Station Plaza featuring the M.T.H.D.S. and headliners Pep Love and Opio , front men from the wildly successful Heiroglyphics.

M.T.H.D.S. sound is funk-driven rock, melodic hip-hop and blue reggae united together. Formed in April of 2007, ‘The Methods,’ as they’re more widely known to their fans, were drawn together by a love of music and snowboarding. Using a name derived from the snowboarding trick, the Colorado based group began playing to world class athletes, tourists, ski bums, gnarly shredders, hipsters, slizzes and confused drunk weirdos that accidently wandered into various shows.

Headliners Opio and Pep Love are members of the Oakland -based undergound hip hop collective - Heiroglyphics. Both remain two of the most popular Mcees in the Hieroglyphics camp, coming off with a smooth flow in conjunction with well thought-out and clever verbals. They continue to astound fans worldwide.

Tubbs Romp to Stomp Out Breast Cancer Comes to Summit County Colorado

The seventh annual Tubbs Romp to Stomp out Breast Cancer, one of the largest snowshoe events in the nation, is set for March 7 at the Frisco Nordic Center, and organizers are encouraging participants to register early — or risk being shut out. Event organizers announced Thursday that a participation cap of 2,000 will be placed on the event, and registration is up this year nearly 80 percent over last year. Day-of-event registration likely will not be available.

The event, which last year attracted some 2,200 snowshoers and raised more than $131,000 for the Denver affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, is expected to sell out, according to site coordinator Joan Davids.“It is major,” she said. “We are looking to raise over $125,000, but will need everyone’s help.”Frisco — one of five communities across the country to host such an event — is an ideal setting, according to director Wendy Miller, because it is a short drive from Denver and offers scenic trails and plenty of room for gathering — as well as great support from the town and the Frisco Nordic Center.“The Frisco event grew by 400 participants from the year before to reach 2200” Miller said. “We think might be the largest snowshoe event in the world.” Tubbs Snowshoes, the prime sponsor, will have a limited supply of snowshoes available for free use for participants. The event will start at 7:30 a.m. with a pancake breakfast for participants sponsored by Wells Fargo. For more information on the event or to sign up in advance visit the Romp To Stomp website.

It's time again for Snow Sculptures!

In Breckenridge each year, blank canvases of snow become works of art. From a whimsical bouquet of enormous flowers, to thought provoking abstract shapes, sculptors form these masterpieces before thousands of spectators over the course of five days in the heart of town.
In its 17th year, artists from all over the world will come together to present intricate, awe-inspiring snow sculptures. These artists will carve twenty-ton, 12-foot-tall blocks of snow into pieces of art using only their creativity, inspiration, own two hands and permitted hand tools.

I have been lucky enough to preview the designs for some of these sculptures - wait until you see the Breck Team's - it's called "Wheee!" and it's a roller coaster - don't know how they are going to pull it off - but knowing those guys - they will!

Event Details

*Sculpting concludes on Saturday, January 27th at 10 a.m. and there will be an awards ceremony at the Riverwalk Center at 3 p.m. that same day. Sculptures may be viewed at any time – day or night – during sculpting week and viewing week. Viewing week is January 28th – February 4th (weather and safety dependant).

*Each 4-person team carves a unique sculpture, often times depicting a team’s culture or heritage. There will be a total of 14 teams competing at the 2007 Championships, represeting ten different countries. Only hand tools are allowed in the competition; no power tools or colorants may be used.

*On January 27th, a panel of artists will make awards to the top four teams on the basis of theme, style and technique. The sculptors will also learn which team has been selected as People’s Choice, Kids’ Choice and Artists’ Choice. See you there!

With the weekend snowfalls, Breck’s hit some snowfall records! Remember, my data only goes back to the 2000-2001 season, this month’s snowfall to date (79 inches) makes this December the snowiest December in the past 8 years and the snowiest month overall in the past 8 years as well (previous record was 78 inches, which was December last year). Monthly snowfall is 66% above average, and YTD snowfall is 4% above average. Wahoo!

Tis the season at Main Street Station ! Joining us for the first time will be the Agape Outpost Chapel's Living Nativity on December 19, 22 and 23 two shows each night 5:30 and 7pm. The show is 40 minutes long and combines music, dancing, narration and even Flap Jack, the lucky donkey who is one of the stars in the show. Bundle up and join us for this holiday tradition.

Also on the Main Street Station Plaza will be the Airnastics Team and the quad bungy tramp for those thrill seekers. The tramp will be up December 20th - January 4th from early afternoon and into the dinner hour for those who want to jump after skiing.

Breck just pulled in 4 inches of new snow yesterday in an early week storm that dropped 6 inches over the past two days. It's still cold this morning with maybe another inch expected, but opening day Friday up at Peak 8 should be balmy. Lifts open at 9 a.m. and don't forget the annual free pancake breakfast at the Bergendorf starting at 8:30 a.m.

Dillon Dam Brewery Benefit for Doug Lind

The Dillon Dam Brewery is holding a benefit for Doug Lind on Wednesday from 6-10 p.m. Admission includes live music from Arnie J. Green and Askimbo, one free pint, pasta bar and a raffle ticket.

Admission is $20 for adults, $10 for kids 17 and under, and kids under 5 are free.

The party also has a raffle and silent auction which includes a Never Summer Snowboard, skis from Christy Sports, 2 nights lodging from ResortQuest Breckenridge Lodging and more. All proceeds go directly to Lind to help him with medical expenses.

Doug Lind, who has lived in the High Country since 1997, suffered a massive heart attack, followed by a paralyzing stroke in June.

He has worked since opening day in February 1997 at the Dillon Dam Brewery and as a massage therapist at the Grand Victorian Day Spa and Salon since it opened its doors in 2003.

If anyone would like to donate money to Lind to help defray his medical costs, the Dillon Dam Brewery has set up a For Benefit of Doug Lind Account, and donations can be made at any Alpine Bank in Colorado.

The stroke had left Lind paralyzed on his left side, however, he is currently undergoing intensive physical therapy and is now walking with a cane.

An avid hiker, mountain biker and snowboarder, Lind shared, “I’m doing good and giving two thumbs up.” He plans to attend the benefit.

Breckenridge Says Farewell To Breakfast Main Staple The Prospector Restaurant

The Prospector Restaurant closed it's doors on Monday September 1st after 30 years in business.

Owner Darryl Lee doesn't think that Breckenridge will see another restaurant like this anytime soon. He reflects on serving breakfast to generations of locals.

"I've had kids who said they ate their first pancake here," he said. 'And now they are adults with kids."

"This place is adorable. All rustic-mined themed. The building is over 100 years old with tons of history and some great articles on the wall for additional information. Food was great," wrote one reviewer on trip advisor.

Although it won't be the same as the Prospector visit Day Light Donuts or Blue Moon Bakery across from Main Street Station for some great grub to start your day.

"Up With People" comes to Summit County, CO

Up with People, the international global education program for young adults, is coming to Summit County. While giving to communities through its community impact activities and shows, the program also addresses the real need to help young adults gain a global perspective, intercultural understanding, knowledge of worldwide issues, leadership skills and a sense of social responsibility.

The cast members will be performing a condensed version of the “Up with People Show”, a community celebration that features original and international songs and uses the universal languages of music and dance to inspire, energize and educate. The event serves to spark people to action by highlighting local non-profit organizations and the unique characteristics of communities they visit.

Up with People show on August 14 at 7:30pm at Summit High School. $10 for students and seniors and $15 for general admission.

Up with People’s visit to Summit County was made possible by generous sponsorships from Mark and Tracy Burke of Burke and Riley’s Irish Pub and the Colorado Mountain College. The show on Wednesday is thanks to the Main Street Station Hyatt.

Skateboarding Legal on Breckenridge Streets?

BRECKENRIDGE — Breckenridge skateboarders may soon be shredding the streets legally: Town council members this week gave its staff the go-ahead to prepare rules allowing skaters on most streets.

The council expressed concerns about safety, but decided the eco-friendly transportation method might be worth a try.

“We’re going out on a limb here,” council member Jeffrey Bergeron said to three skate enthusiasts in attendance. “We hope you don’t make us look like chumps.”

About 30 skateboard supporters attended a town meeting less than a month ago, suggesting policy changes and commenting that it seemed unfair for skaters to be ticketed when bicyclists are allowed on the roads.

Colorado law allows Breckenridge Police Department to ticket people riding skateboards on town streets, but few citations have been issued in the past year.

Under new rules, skaters would likely be allowed on all streets except Colorado 9 and Main Street, as the state makes rules for the highway, and Main is heavily traveled.

The Town’s status as a home-rule community allows it to create laws for acts otherwise prohibited by the state.

Police chief Rick Holman said he plans to get feedback from the “skate community” before making suggestions for the ordinance.

He pointed out in a memo to council that unlike bicycles, skateboards don’t have brakes. A skateboarder recently lost control at an intersection and jumped off the board before it struck a car, creating a large dent.

Holman’s memo included ordinances from Steamboat Springs and Jackson Hole, Wyo., that allow for limited skateboarding.

In Steamboat Springs, skateboards and rollerskates or in-line skates are allowed on streets not heavily traveled, and riders must be equipped with reflectors or lights from dusk until dawn.

Holman said the Breckenridge Police Department doesn’t support allowing skateboarding on the town streets.

“For me, safety concerns for both the skateboarder and the motorists on the road outweigh the transportation benefits achieved by a select few,” he said in the memo.
No other Summit County communities are considering allowing skateboards on their streets, he said Tuesday.

Concerns were raised at the meeting regarding skaters losing control on the steep roads leading west to Main Street.

“There’s a lot of road needed to check (their) speed,” Mayor John Warner said.
Council member Dave Rossi said he lived in San Francisco for several years, and skateboarding was legal and the riders were able to maintain control even on steep streets.

Town attorney Tim Berry said the town will need to make signs alerting visitors to skateboards on the streets.

Council members Jennifer McAtamney and Eric Mamula were not present for Tuesday’s discussion.
