What is HIV - 2?

An animal source for a new infection is not unique to HIV. The plague came from rodents. Influenza and the new Nipah virus in the South- East Asia reached humans via pigs. Variant Creutzfeldt- Jakob disease in the United Kingdome came from "mad cows". Once HIV became established in humans, it soon followed human habits and movements. Like other viruses, HIV recognizes no social, political or geographic boundaries.

In view of some queries and submission of credentials, both online and personal, the Division is reminding all applicants that we are not yet accepting new nurse applicants for screening.

We wish to reiterate, for everybody to wait for an announcement through this egroup on WHEN and WHERE to submit the original credentials for the initial screening of nurse applicants in PGH.

Meanwhile, application for Nursing Attendant position in PGH remained open - applicants of which may come during office hours at the Division of Nursing Research and Development to submit the required credentials. Let me share some insights with you on How to become a nurse in Canada.. :)

I could say that it's a two fold process:

1. Credentialing and Licensure.
2. Employment and Deployment.

READ on..:)

You need to satisfy these 2 processes to become an RN in Canada . You can have first, the employment and deployment, then have the credentialing and licensure afterwards, or you can have the other way around. It doesn’t matter as long as you satisfy these two-fold process, both were fine. You can have it simultaneously as well, which I personally recommend, to expedite the process and waste no time.

They are responsible in regulating the practice of Nursing in their jurisdiction. Hence, you need a “go” signal from them or meet their requirements to practice Nursing in their respective location.

First, choose your target destination or Canadian province of your choice. Then access their Board of Nursing, and know their requirements for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs). Upon completion of the requirements, forward your documents/credentials at the same time you may start searching for potential employers. So that while you’re waiting for your “go” signal, you are being productive of your waiting time.

By the way, each province mandates its own requirements; each province varies on their requirements so you better be careful with the details. For example:

· Alberta – Before you become eligible to their province, they require you to take a Substantially Equivalent Competency (SEC) Assessment. It’s their way of evaluating potential applicants if he/she meets the requirements of their Nursing Board. Hence, many colleagues opted to choose LPN as entry route then later on convert their status to RN. Because, their LPN requirement is a minimum of 1 year nursing studies, in our case we got it in 4 years, then BSN pa. So, it’s easy to become LPN first before becoming an RN. I’ve heard it would be an advantage for NCLEX-RN passers to apply as LPN for Alberta , because their LPN Regulatory Board is honoring their NCLEX passing certificate so that they won’t have to take the LPN qualifying Exam. They are instant LPN when they get there, compare to applicants who doesn’t have one. They still have to apply for the exam and pass the LPN exam to work as one.

· British Columbia – as of December 2008, the BC Nursing Board also adopts the SEC Assessment. So, majority of IEN applicants for CRNBC registration were required to go to BC to take the SEC. The thing is, you need to go there to take the SEC Assessment, its only offered in Mainland Canada , now, what kind of visa should you applying for one? Noting that majority of Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) or Tourist Visa weren’t granted for SEC purposes. Chances are, you’ll receive a refusal letter. Hence, making it very difficult now to become an RN directly to BC, that’s why some of our colleagues opted to try LPN route as well.

· Quebec – While the entire province requires IELTS as English Communication Fluency Assessment, the province of Quebec requires French as their mode of Communication. So, if you’re planning to go to Quebec , start enrolling now on a French Class.

· Ontario – College of Nurses in Ontario (CNO) requires a bridging program. So you need to study before they give you eligibility to practice. It would be a disadvantage for fresh graduates, but for 2nd coursers and withPost Graduate Studies, I think they are honoring those credits hence facilitating easy entry to become an RN.

Those are some of different requirements mandated by some provinces. Some of the provinces who are lenient on their requirements are: Manitoba , Saskatchewan , Nova Scotia , etc. Note also the timeline, so if you’re in a hurry, I would suggest to choose a province that you think there are less applicants and lenient requirements.

But the common denominators to become an RN among all the Provinces are:

1. BSN degree – hence they are requesting for BSN diploma and Official Transcript. Hence, there would be a form to be submitted to your School of Nursing , and the School would send it back directly to them.

2. RN license – so, you need to become RN in your place of origin. Hence, there would be a form to be submitted to PRC, then PRC would send them directly a verification that indeed you are a nurse here in thePhilippines .

3. English/French Fluency – IELTS, TOEFL, CELBAN or French Assessment etc.. I would suggest taking these fluency assessments first before proceeding to the application, because they won’t process your application if it’s incomplete. There would be no “to follow” documents. Chances are, they would be returning your application and advise you to comply first with the requirements before submitting your application.

Upon submission of requirements, you would receive a feedback from assessment of your Board of Nursing. But, timeline varies in each province, so there’s no exact waiting time. It may be:

a) Yes, you’ve met all their requirements (the “go” signal)

b) Not yet, you need to comply with other requirements to commence your application (i.e SEC assessment, Bridging Program, etc.)

c) No, you did not meet their requirements.

In my case, I received an eligibility to take the Canadian Registered Nurse Examination (CRNE) and an application for Interim Permit. Because, CRNE is only offered three times a year, you can work as a Nurse while waiting for your exam schedule, which would be an orientation to Canadian Healthcare System and good as review as well. Then once you passed the Canadian RN Exam, your Interim Permit would be automatically converted to Full RN Permit. The Interim Permit is good for a maximum of 9 months and renewable for a maximum of three times, because you can only take the CRNE to a maximum of 3 attempts.

That’s it for Credentialing and Licensure!

Now, let’s talk about employment and deployment.

For employment part, generally most of the employers can be searched online, if you want a direct hire process.

Generally, your WORK experience really matters. It will be your ticket to a job offer may it be direct hired or thru recruitment agencies. For direct hiring, usually there are health authorities governing each province. They are the ones active in international recruitment and also I think they have specific program for internationally educated nurses. Such as:

   Alberta – Alberta Health Services

Saskatchewan - Saskatchewan Regional Health Authority

   Manitoba - Winnipeg Regional Health Authority

Assiniboine Regional Health Authority

   British Columbia –www.healthmatchbc.org

   www.nursevancouver.com

I’m sorry; I’m not familiar with the other provinces. I suggest you may want to search the health authorities on your target destination and have the diligence to research on the hiring process for Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs).

But, there are some agencies there to approach if you want to avail their service.

To name a few:

MERCAN (Ortigas) – for Alberta , Saskatchewan and Manitoba

HRPC (Ortigas) – Alberta

Caves Treasures ( Makati ) – Nova Scotia

Greenfields International (Malate) – I’m not familiar which province they caters

Staffbuilders (Malate)– Manitoba

Active Works (Malate) – British Columbia

www.healthstaffing.org – British Columbia

To ensure that you’re dealing with POEA accredited recruitment agencies, I suggest you check their license to operate. If you want to validate their POEA license, you can check it on POEA website.

For deployment,

Basically, it answers the questions on how to get there?

So, I would share the options.

There are two main paths to Canada:

One way is to obtain a permanent residence visa.

The other way is to come to Canada on a temporary work permit.

Let’s discuss first the Temporary Route . There are 2 visas under the classification of temporary nature:

a) Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)

b) Temporary Work Permit (TWP)

Now, TRV or Tourist Visa is not really an option so to speak. I’ve known 10 colleagues who tried this route but unfortunately were refused. Some even presented their eligibility to take the CRNE and CRNE exam schedule. Some even presented an invitation letter from their relatives. It just says that the Visa Officer was not convinced that they would return after their legal stay in Canada .

In accordance with section 11(1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA), any person wishing to become a temporary resident of Canada must satisfy a visa officer that he or she is not inadmissible to Canada and meets the requirements of the Act. This includes the requirement to establish to the satisfaction of the visa officer that the applicant will respect their conditions of entry and will leave Canada by the end of the period authorized for his or her stay. In reaching a decision, an officer considers several factors. These may include the applicant’s travel and identity documents, reason for travel to Canada, contacts in Canada, financial means for the trip, ties to the country of residence (including immigration status, employment and family ties) and whether the applicant would be likely to leave Canada at the end of his/her authorized stay.

And also tourists cannot work, res ipsa loquitur (the thing speaks for itself), tourist hence tour. So if you’re planning to work there TRV or Tourist Visa is not the right visa for you.

On the other hand, Temporary Work Permit or Working Visa is also temporary in nature because you need to go back to your country of origin upon completion of your work; though, there could be an extension or upgrading of status. Although this is temporary in nature, essentially you can commence to work legally.

For you to obtain a working permit, of course you need to have a job offer. A job offer and Human Resources and Social Development (HRSD) confirmation or Labor Market Opinion (LMO) are the basic requirements for obtaining a Work Permit.

An HRSDC confirmation is the opinion provided by Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC) to the visa officer which enables them to determine whether the employment of the foreign worker is likely to have a positive or negative impact on the labour market in Canada . An HRSDC confirmation may be required in order for a work permit to be issued.

The HRSDC confirmation process is started by the prospective employer who contacts HRSDC to get a job offer form. When the form is completed and submitted, HRSDC considers several factors, including the availability of Canadians and the offered wages as well as the economic benefit the foreign worker would bring. HRSDC then provides advice to the officer.

The HRSDC confirmation is typically given for a specific period of time, and the work permit will be issued to coincide with this period. Renewal of a work permit beyond the specified period will therefore likely require a new opinion from HRSDC.

In short, it is just a determination on how that job offer will impact the Canada ’s Economy; positive Labor Market Opinion is required.

It’s quite difficult to get an LMO, because the employer needs to convince the HRSDC that they have exhausted all their efforts to search for Canadian workers but didn’t find any hence opted for foreign workers. They need to prove that their last resort is the foreign worker.

Then once you have a job offer and positive LMO, you can now apply for TWP. It doesn’t guarantee as well that the valid job offer and LMO would give you a working visa. There are still instances that you’ll receive a refusal letter.

The other option is the Permanent Residence Visa; There are 5 categories to become a permanent resident:

1. Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)

2. Quebec Skilled Worker

3. Provincial Nominee

4. Family Sponsored Class

5. Business Immigrants

Options 1-3 are applicable for Internationally Educated Nurses, option 4 can be applicable if you have relatives who are permanent residents or citizens in Canada .

· Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) is a relatively new program; I think it was introduced just last November 2008. It is quite a new program;
hence, some employers are not yet acquainted with the process. There are 3 elements for you to qualify under this program:

a) Minimum level of work experience - A skilled worker must have at least one year of continuous full-time employment (or the equivalent in part-time).

b) Financial resources - This is a straightforward requirement – an applicant must demonstrate that they have sufficient financial resources to support themselves and their dependents for 6 months after arrival in Canada . However, if you have an approved job offer, this requirement is waived.

c) points-based assessment

o Education (maximum 25 points)

o Language Skills (maximum 24 points)

o Experience (maximum 21 points)

o Age (maximum 10 points)

o Arranged Employment (maximum 10 points)

o Adaptability (maximum 10 points)

Altogether these three elements, along with other requirements such as security clearances and medical examinations, make up the bulk of the requirements to come to Canada under the Skilled Worker category. If you are applying to live or work in Montreal or elsewhere in Quebec however, you must meet the selection criteria of the Province of Quebec .

· Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) - One way to speed up the process of immigration to Canada is through the Provincial Nomination Program (PNP). The PNP consists of partnerships between the Government of Canadaand provincial governments to select individuals who wish to immigrate to Canada and settle in that particular province. Most provinces in Canada have agreements in place to participate in this program. Under the terms of these agreements, provinces may nominate applicants who are in occupations in high demand, or who will otherwise make important contributions to the province.

To immigrate to Canada under the PNP, an individual must first apply for a Provincial Nomination Certificate to the provincial government where they would like to reside. Each province has different requirements based on their particular needs. After receiving the Provincial Nomination Certificate, an individual then must apply for a Canadian Permanent Resident Visa. Provincial nominees receive priority processing for their permanent residency applications.

The following provinces currently participate in the Provincial Nomination Program:

· Alberta

· British Columbia

· Manitoba

· New Brunswick

· Newfoundland and Labrador

· Nova Scotia

· Prince Edward Island

· Saskatchewan

PNP doesn’t utilize a pointing based system and no need for financial proof. Each province mandates its own Provincial Nominee requirements. In British Columbia , it is an employer driven process. While in Manitoba you can be nominated even if 2 of your friends vouch for you.

The good thing there is you will land in Canada as Immigrants already, enjoying the same rights that of a Citizen is entitled to except for 2 things:
1) the right to vote and
2) eligibility to apply for a passport.

AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus

Acquired- resulting from exposure to something
Immune deficiency - impairs the immune system to function properly
Syndrome - a group of health problems that make a disease

What causes AIDS?
HIV - it is a virus that attacks the immune system. Particularly the T cells of the body. If you get infected with the virus, your body starts to make antibodies to fight infection. As HIV progresses the body becomes more vulnerable to infection. Studies show that it may take years for HIV to develop and become until it has damaged the immune system of the body making it enough for AIDS to develop.

How do you get AIDS?
People in the Philippines have known AIDS. There were some cases in the Philippines and now it is growing. The alarming number of HIV infected persons now call the Department of Health to take action.
If you get infected with HIV, your body will try to fight the infection. However, these virus are not the usual virus these are stronger virus that fights the T- cells of the body. These T- cells make up the fighting mechanism of the body from infection. Once destroyed, the body does not recover and eventually fights off anything on its path.

Most people get the virus by:

Having sexual intercourse. Seminal and vaginal fluids or body fluids
Needle puncture with an infected HIV
Being born when the mother is infected.

Is there a cure for AIDS?

Antiretroviral treatment can prolong the time between the HIV infection and onset of AIDS.

Right now, there is no cure for AIDS. There are only drugs that can slow the damage to your immune system. There are more researches being made right now for the proper drugs to cure AIDS.

End of Life care becomes necessary when a person has reached the very final stage of AIDS. It is the time when we care for the patient infected with love, spiritual support and relief from pain.

Nowadays, it has become a trend for many Filipinos because of the lack of reproductive health education, people are more vulnerable to these diseases. Let us not blame arrogance or lack of knowledge, or even the Catholic Church. The Philippines is a Catholic country, unwittingly promoting a no contraceptive act has its advantage and disadvantages.

Let us help people who are infected with the virus and learn from them. Life is a battlefield.

I am writing this because I really would love to have my own organization or a small group for AIDS infected people. They should not be outcasted from the society rather be humane to care for them in our own ways.

The public should be educated about this growing number of people infected with the virus. Hopefully, God will give us the strength to carry on. God bless!

Refuse to listen to gossip, slander and other negative forms of speech.
Do not talk behind people's back and intentionally hurt them by GOSSIPING.

3. See No Evil.
Judge people KINDLY, the way you would wnat them to JUDGE you!.

4. Be Humble; Avoid Arrogance.
To keep a HUMBLE spirit, we need to monitor our actions and words constantly to make sure that we don't OFFEND Others.

5. Be Honest and Sensitive.
The fact that something is true, does not justify negative or cruel speech. Strive for HONESTY in everything you do.

6. Learn to Say "I'M SORRY".
Everyone makes mistakes. If you've spoken badly about someone, clear it up immediately and say SORRY!

7. Don't make Fun of People.
Making fun of someone causes anguish and painful memories.

8. Give Out Compliments
Everyone likes compliments, it doesn't matter who you are. And Compliments, because they are an expression of kindness, can be very BONDING and HEALING.
Don't just eliminate NeGATIVE SPEECH. Replace it with POSITIVE Words.

Yesterday, the 10th of November, my witty supervisor verbally harassed me.It was a minor mistake made by my senior nurse and I was the one blamed. I am not happy about this, so I am seeking legal consultation from my lawyer friends.

My witty supervisor looked at all the kardex filed on my table.
She saw a minor mistake written on the kardex.
Says on the Blood and Plasma: MGH
*the abbreviation for may go home

She noticed that MGH should not be posted on the blood and plasma, hmmmmm
She asked me where should I place that damn MGH on the kardex...
I told her, just there. haha

thinking that I should save my senior nurse from the embarrassment.
Then she proudly says, "Do you want me to suspend you?"
duh?!
Big Deal!
Just for that damn MGH note on the blood and plasma kardex?
Is that a big mistake for her?
Bigger than killing a patient?

So, my alleged senior says sorry for writing it down that way.
hmmmmm I still think it wasn't a good move for my supervisor to act that way.
I think she is a real power tripper!
Alright, a mistake made by my senior nurse, but why was I blamed?
Why should I get suspended?
Even if it is a joke it is not a funny one.

What a game!!!! What a day!!!

I just got home from a very exciting basketball game!

this is how my day went...

7:00 am - 3:00 pm hospital duty.... weeee wooot

3:30pm - Ongoing endless endorsement. hehe kiddin.

3:40pm - Rounds

Around 5:30pm, I was about to luckily go home... The resident doctors saw me and kidnapped me, *kidding. They invited me to join them and watch their basketball game, thinking that they would win since they were the champs for 3 consecutive game.

6:00 pm - THE GAME starts now!

Nurses vs. Resident Doctors

The hospital I worked with has opened its inter - hospital basketball game for this year. The team goes as follows: The Resident Doctors team, Nurses team, Med tech team, Green boy team, Admin team, so on.

The Resident Doctors team made its name by earning 3 consecutive wins for the basketball game. The nurses team, unfortunately were the *kulelats hehe! Nurses team had 3 consecutive losses. Today, it was a different game plan for the nurses team to push themselves and go for the win this time!
Luckily, we watched the game! Hell nurses won!!! wooot it was the sweetest win! yehey! :D

Today, I did my laundry ahaha its too cold outside feels like there's an upcoming typhoon again. Oh well, hope not. I am staring at my blogspot and i really dunno what to write...
This post is entitled ken ken.. Let me tell you a short story..
Once upon a time, there was me and him (my ken).. We were together for almost a year. That whole year felt like 10 years in a relationship. Talk about being together 24/7 ahahahaha
Truth is I fell in love with a guy who loves me more than I love him, rarely that happens. It all started in school, we were college sweethearts and the rest is history.
He is the sweetest, funniest, lovable guy I have ever known. We talk about a lot of stuff, anything under the sun, then he asked me if we can have a term of endearment. Something like baby, love, mahal, sweet, cupcake, french fries, mocha, milk, candy... I told him it would be nice if he'll think of a word that says i love you, you are mine and no one else comes close. That word should be a 3 letter word with one syllable. You know what's amazing? He thought of the word Ken.. As in short for "Aken", in Filipino it means, mine... sweet huh?!
That's how it started. :D

geeeez, its like this year 2009, can't get any better!

Last year, it was a sudden decision to resign from a steady job i had and take a risk. I did it because i felt a lot of pressure and stress came all along that gruesome year. I thought that last year was a steady one, until I decided to make a move (one that I can say one of the biggest decisions I made).

2009 I was lucky to have a job in a hospital here in Tarlac. A private hospital that caters around 100 plus bed capacity. This is a good chance for me to start things and have a new life. I know not to expect anything. Just be me and make a change.

Well, it wasn't that easy. I had to go along the starting process. My job as a nurse is a sudden shift for me. I was just a girl who lived the simple life. I mean, it was all easy way back in Manila. My former job was just to sit, listen, relax, face the computer and answer phone calls all day este all night long. Seriously, that was tiring! No sleep, no time to eat. I lost around 5lbs way back then. I thought that if I'd go home in Tarlac, I'd be less miserable. How come I was miserable? Well, truth is, my x boyfriend and i still see each other in that same office. We worked in one company. It was hard seeing each other when it makes no sense at all. We're not together anymore but we literally see each other. I admit, everyday I tortured myself.. and seeing him around hard to endure but i did... yey me! I really have to move on.

Here, I have my family, my friends, my bestfriend chi, but I don't know if I will get a job in tarlac. So, that was not planned.

Btw, before i resigned and change location, i really really really prayed hard... as hard as i could. ... just to tell God that I am ready to take the risk. I am willing to change my life.

My first days as a nurse was not a very good experience at all. I was fortunately assigned in the ICU, well there are two sides of a coin, there is an advantage and disadvantage. An icu nurse? me? nah, it was just a rotation. :D That experience was really really tiring, took all the energy out of me. Literally, it was all man power, definitely just you and the patients. If it gets toxic, it was hell scary because like wat i experienced, one patient is dying, raised a code, then on the other bed, another patient is having a seizure. I was in shock! In some nights, before I sleep, I curl up to my bed and ask myself, "do i really want to be a nurse?" hahaha

Those were the first months of Lougie nurse. ahahaha

Then i got over it. :D

10 months later..
oct 2009, today!

I was assigned to the station I ward. Hell, it was a big shift. you know why?
first: Station I means single duty. what the heck is that? single duty as in I will have no help, it will just be me and the patients. geeeez. what a big big big responsibility. I am just a newbie hey! I need help. But, I had to accept it. It became a challege. :D
second: The station I is a secluded, isolated place. I mean hey they will never see my beauty. nah, kidding. :D the station I is far away from people. geeeez. (wala akong makausap kundi patiente at ung aid ko) ahehe
third: I never wanted to be on a single duty. I need help. More nurses more help less complications less mistakes

This is me now, lets just say, everyday is a learning experience for me. :D
Everyday, i get scolded from doing something wrong then I learn, and never do it again.:D
Everyday, i know is a challenge.
Everyday, i just pray to have less census. ahahhaha
less patients, less work, less toxic the shift is. :D

right now, it got me thinking...
this might not be the job that i wished when i was young.
this might not be the job that will make big money.
this might not be the job that will make life easier for me.

however, this might be a stepping stone to a good life, pouring with milk and honey. ahehe ^^

A Church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday (or Saturday).

"I've gone to Church for 30 years now.." he wrote, "And in that time, I have heard something like 3,000 sermons? But for the life of me, I can't remember a single one of them! So, I think I'm wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all.."

For our physical life we do things we don't always enjoy doing like washing clothes, doing the dishes, taking out the garbage, changing baby's diapers.. but even if we don't enjoy theses things.. we have to do it to keep us clean, healthy and eventually keep us from greater problems..

Honestly, we may not always enjoy going to Church but we need to do it to keep our spirits strong and healthy.

If you want to stay buff, fit and sexy you have to regularly go the the exercise room. To get and maintain the body you want you have to stick to your routine even when you don't feel like it... The same applies to our spirit... we need to keep it fit and healthy... so we need to nourish it by praying and going to Church... even if at times we feel lazy to go.

Poor kid if you don't change its diapers, but diaper changing is never fun. Poor soul if you don't nourish it by going to church at times can seem discard-able.

Faith sees the invisible, believes the incredible and receives the impossible!

Thank God for our physical AND our spiritual nourishment!
