Can Benitez Retain Professionalism This Spring?

Chelsea are facing a major problem heading into the business end of the season as the aftermath of interim manager Rafael Benitez’s outburst continues to settle.

The Blues boss lit up the headlines in the Premier League betting news by letting his feelings be known after Chelsea’s 2-0 win at Middlesbrough in the FA Cup last midweek and although he insisted he was happy with the crowd reception inside Stamford Bridge last Saturday is still at loggerheads with supporters.

Clearly the Spaniard is set to leave at the end of the season but still has a job to do at Chelsea. Into the FA Cup quarter-finals and still in with a chance of claiming the UEFA Europa League, Chelsea have honours to fight for and Benitez will want to prove his worth to future employers.

So, if you're looking to bet on football with bet365, it's worth asking: how far can Chelsea go this season? Currently fourth in the league, they have little chance of catching the careering Tottenham and instead should focus on keeping Arsenal at bay.

With Benitez having proven himself at European level before now and with little to play for in England, he may just go all out to claim that trophy. There is light at the end of this dark 2012/13 tunnel for Blues fans and Benitez probably wants silverware just as much as you do.

Reading secured their first Premier League victory of the campaign in a gritty 2-1 comeback against a high-flying Everton side, but Brian McDermott's sides joy was short lived as they followed up with back-to-back defeats against fellow strugglers in the bottom third of the table. Reading were edged out of potential points away to Wigan Athletic last weekend in a 3-2 defeat that was particularly disappointing given their impressive victory against Everton the week before. The Royals then lost by a single goal margin for the fourth time this season as they went down 1-0 away to Aston Villa, making it just two points for Brian McDermott's men in a total of seven away matches this season.

Reading have a packed festive fixture calendar, with eight matches to play including six against opposition currently sitting in the top half of the table, and three of the current top five. It's going to be a very difficult time for Reading fans, and the pressure is certainly mounting on Brian McDermott, who will be setting his sights on two key fixtures that are coming up, and sit outside of those six difficult games! Southampton have found a great bit of form with a vital 3-1 win at Queens Park Rangers two weeks ago being followed up by their third win of the season at home to Newcastle United. That 2-0 victory at home to the Magpies was also Southampton's first clean sheet in the Premier League, providing more evidence that Nigel Adkins' team are improving and on the up. Last night's 1-1 draw with Norwich City wasn't quite enough to move Southampton out of the relegation zone, following Aston Villa's win on Tuesday night, but the run of four consecutive Premier League matches without a defeat will certainly fill the team with confidence as they march into December.

Southampton travel to Anfield on Saturday afternoon in search of a second consecutive away victory, although we can be sure that Nigel Adkins would happily take a point. Sunderland enjoyed only their second victory of the current Premier League campaign when they defeated Fulham 3-1 at Craven Cottage two weeks ago, ending a run of five league matches without a win, including the 2-1 defeat against Everton at Goodison Park. Martin O Neill will certainly be feeling the pressure now as his side languish down in sixteenth place, just two points above the dreaded relegation zone, and two points behind bitter rivals Newcastle United. Last night the Black Cats played out a 0-0 draw with bottom club Queens Park Rangers which would have done little to relieve the growing concerns at the club, although there will be some satisfaction in securing their fourth clean sheet of the campaign. That followed last Saturday's 4-2 defeat at home to West Bromwich Albion, the first time all season that Sunderland have conceded four goals in a single match.

Martin O Neill takes his side to Norwich City on Sunday afternoon, hoping to build on their impressive away win at Fulham three weeks ago. They'll need to find their form as Norwich City have looked impressive at home this season, particularly in defeating both Manchester United and Arsenal. Sunderland then host Chelsea next Saturday afternoon, a side they have only beaten once in fourteen Premier League attempts, 3-0 at Stamford Bridge back in November 2010, before welcoming Reading three days later in a Tuesday night kick off that will be billed as a relegation six pointer. Everton suffered only their second defeat of the season when they went down 2-1 at Reading weekend before last, with a late penalty proving the difference, and David Moyes' team followed up with another stumbling draw as Norwich City returned from Goodison Park with a hard fought point in a game that finished 1-1. Whilst that single point from a possible six has not damaged Everton's fine start to the season too much, it certainly leaves David Moyes with some troubles and puts the team under a bit of pressure as they enter a very difficult set of fixtures.
