Everyone who starts blogging would like to become successful. Success can be achieved and interpreted in different ways. Most bloggers are inclined to measure success by the number of traffic or visits generated by their blogs while some bloggers claim themselves successful when they effectively monetize their blogs. However you define and measure success in Blogging, Blogging Mix will be a useful concept for bloggers who aspire to become successful.

Today's article will focus on defining and explaining the Blogging Mix and its components. It will also give you a brief overview of the necessary elements that every blogger needs in order to become successful in blogging.

In marketing, we have what we call as the marketing mix. Otherwise known as the 4Ps and 7Ps for goods and services respectively. These Ps (product, price, promotion, place, physical evidence, process and people) are key elements that determine the success of a marketing campaign, program or project.

Blogging has its own mix of elements that I wish to refer to as the Blogging Mix. Blogging Mix is made up of 3Cs, namely; Content, Connection and Continuity. These three elements are vital for the success of every blogger. Just like the marketing mix, the proper management of the Blogging Mix will lead bloggers to a successful blogging experience.

Blogging Mix or the 3Cs (content, connection and continuity)

Blogging Mix embodies all that a blogger should have or should accomplish to become successful in blogging. Content, Connection and Continuity are all that is needed for bloggers to achieve their goals and objectives. Let's tackle the Blogging Mix one by one starting first with content.

Content

Content refers to the value of posts or entries that a blogger publish on his or her blog. It also refers to the topic, layout, theme, genre, tone, use of keywords, HTML and the format of the blog. In short, 'content is a blog's internal environment'. Take note that in content, bloggers are primarily if not solely responsible of its outcome.

Perhaps you have heard from other bloggers that content is king, king for the reason that according to them it's the most important aspect of a blog. The idea of giving content the utmost importance is something I beg to disagree with. I have noticed some blogs with great contents but do not receive the attention and appreciation they deserve. I believe that a blog is supported by three elements (content, connection and continuity) in order to be successful. These three elements share the same and equal importance and value. They work like a tripod and the absence of one element makes blogging a failure.

Here are a few questions that can be used to gauge the effectiveness of a blog's content.

1. Is your blog's topic timely, relevant, informative or entertaining?

2. Are the posts on your blog presented well for convenient reading? Are your posts free from errors? Are you using your keywords in your posts?

3. Is your blog optimized for search engines? Is it search engine friendly? Are you using tags?

4. Do you spend time to conduct research before writing your entries? Do you take time to understand what your readers need and want?

Any question with a NO answer needs your attention. Take note that these are basic things in blogging. Articles discussing the more technical issues of content will be posted at Blogskinny.com very soon.

Connection

Connection is another important element in the Blogging Mix. Connection refers to the inbound or incoming (link to your web page from another site) and outbound or outgoing links to your blog. It also pertains to a blogger's network of friends, readers, admirers, competitors and community. Connection should also be understood as the ways bloggers interact with their networks. And lastly, connection refers to the techniques and strategies that bloggers employ to publicize or promote their blogs. In simple words, 'connection is the external environment of a blog'. While bloggers have more responsibilities to their blog's content, connection largely depends to the blog's external environment (i.e. readers, admirers, competitors etc.).

A lot of blog experts assert how links, both inward and outward, are essential in determining a blog's search engine ranking or a blog's visibility in the blogosphere. Link alone however cannot stand on its own. As I've said earlier, bloggers need connections to supplement content and continuity to support both. To assess your blog's Connection, here are a few more questions to guide you.

1. Do you receive positive and negative comments or feedbacks about your posts on your blog? Do you respond to these comments?

3. Have you signed up in Technorati, Mybloglog, Blogcatalog or Squidoo?

4. Have you been commenting on other blogger's blog? Have you been joining forums lately?

5. Is your blog registered to major search engines? Blog directories? RSS directories?

Continuity

Continuity may sound easy or simple but it actually shares the same level of devotion and hard work that content and connection require. Continuity refers to the continuous development or improvement of a blog's content and continuity. It also refers to the consistent and continuous updating or posting fresh articles on your blog. Most successful bloggers of today are those people who remained consistent in updating their blogs. Through continuous blogging, a blogger will be able to gain a wide number of readers and will receive more referrals from search engines and other websites and weblogs.

You should however understand that continuity is not merely about continuous blogging or posting new entries or articles on your blog. More importantly, continuity is all about development and progress. It's about taking the next step one after another. If you take time to read older blog posts of successful bloggers, you'll find out that their current posts are a lot better compared to their older entries. This is what exactly continuity is all about.

There are basically two types of bloggers in the world - reporters and experts - and some people perform both roles (usually the experts, it’s hard for reporters to become experts, but it’s easy for experts to report).

If you have ever taken an Internet marketing course or attended a seminar specifically for beginners, you have probably heard about the two different methodologies. Whenever the business model is based on content, and if you blog for money then the model is based on content, people are taught to either start as reporters, or if possible step up as experts.

I’ll be frank, you want to be the expert.

Reporters leverage the content of the experts and in most cases people start off as reporters because they haven’t established expertise. Experts enjoy the perks of preeminence, higher conversion rates because of perceived value, it’s easier to get publicity, people are more likely to seek you out rather than you having to seek others out, joint ventures come easier, etc… experts in most cases simply make more money and attract more attention.

Most Bloggers Are Reporters

The thing with expertise is that it requires something - experience. No person becomes an expert without doing things and learning. Bloggers usually start out without expertise and as a result begin their blogging journey by talking about everything going on in their niche (reporting) and by interviewing and talking about other experts (reporting again).

There’s nothing wrong with reporting of course and for many people it’s a necessity at first until you build up some expertise. Unfortunately the ratios are pretty skewed when it comes to reporters and experts - there are a lot more reporters than there are experts, hence reporters tend to struggle to gain attention and when they do, they often just enhance the reputation of the expert they are reporting on.

Don’t Replicate Your Teacher

Many people first study Internet marketing from a “guru” (for lack of a better term). It’s a saturated market, yet when you see your teachers and other gurus making money teaching others how to make money (and let’s face it - making money as a subject is one of the most compelling) - your natural inclination is to follow in their footsteps.

If the key is to become an expert and you haven’t spent the last 5-10 years making money online, I suggest you look for another niche to establish expertise in.

Report on Your Process, Not Others

The secret to progress from reporter to expert is not to focus on other experts and instead report on your own journey. When you are learning how to do something and implementing things day by day, or studying other people’s work, you need to take your process and what you do as a result of what you learn, and use it as content for your blog.

It’s okay to talk about experts when you learn something from them, but always relate it to what you are doing. If you learn a technique from an expert it’s fine to state you learned it from them (and affiliate link to their product too!) but you should then take that technique, apply it to what you are doing and then report back YOUR results, not there’s. Frame things using your opinion - your stories - and don’t regurgitate what the expert said. The key is differentiation and personality, not replication.

Expertise comes from doing things most people don’t do and then talking about it. If you do this often enough you wake up one day as an expert, possibly without even realizing how it happened, simply because you were so good at reporting what you did.

You Are Already An Expert

Most people fail to become experts (or perceived as experts) because they don’t leverage what they already know. Every person who lives a life learns things as they go, takes action every day and knows something about something. The reason why they never become an expert is because they choose not to (which is fine for some, not everyone wants to be an expert), but if your goal is to blog your way to expertise and leave the world of reporting behind you have to start teaching and doing so by leveraging real experience.

Experience can come from what you do today and what you have done previously, you just need to take enough steps to demonstrate what you already know and what you are presently learning along your journey. I know so many people in my life who are experts simply by virtue of the life they have lived, yet they are so insecure about what they know, they never commit their knowledge to words for fear of…well fear.

Blogs, and the Web in general, are amazing resources when you leverage them as a communication tool to spread your expertise because of the sheer scope of people they can reach. If all you ever do is talk to people in person and share your experience using limited communication mediums, you haven’t much hope of becoming an expert. Take what you know and show other people through blogging, and you might be surprised how people change their perception of you in time.

Reporting Is A Stepping Stone

If your previous experience and expertise is from an area you want to leave behind or you are starting from “scratch”, then reporting is the path you must walk, at least for the short term.

Reporting is a lot of fun. Interviewing experts, talking about what other people are doing and just being part of a community is not a bad way to blog. In many cases people make a career of reporting (journalism is about just that), but if you truly want success and exponential results, at some point you will have to stand up and proclaim yourself as someone unusually good at something and then proceed to demonstrate it over and over again.

Have patience and focus on what you do to learn and then translate that experience into lessons for others, and remember, it’s okay to be a big fish in a small pond, that’s all most experts really are.

This means that when you're looking at, say, the Top search queries report, you're only seeing the top search queries for a particular site. Looking at the top queries for www.example.com will show you different data than looking at the top queries for www.example.org. Makes sense, right?

Not all websites have URLs in the form www.example.com, though. Your root URL may not include the www subdomain (example.com); it may include a custom subdomain (rollergirl.example.com); or your site may live in a subfolder, for example if it's hosted on a free hosting site (www.example.com/rollergirl/). Since we want webmasters to be able to access our tools regardless of how their site is hosted, you can add any combination of domain, subdomain(s), and/or subfolder(s) as a "site" on your Webmaster Tools dashboard. Once you've verified your ownership of that site, we'll show you the information we have for that particular piece of the web, however big or small it may be. If you've verified your domain at the root level, we'll show you data for that whole domain; if you've only verified a particular subfolder or subdomain, we'll only show you data for that subfolder or subdomain. Take Blogger as an example--someone who blogs with Blogger should only be able to have access to the data for their own subdomain, not the entire blogspot.com domain.

What some people overlook is the fact that www is actually a subdomain. It's a very, very common subdomain, and many sites serve the same content whether you access them with or without the www; but the fact remains that example.com and www.example.com are two different URLs and have the potential to serve different content. For this reason, they're considered different sites in Webmaster Tools. Since they're different sites--just like www.example.com and www.example.org--they can have different data. When you're looking at the data for www.example.com (with the www subdomain) you're not seeing the data for example.com (without the subdomain), and vice versa.

What can I do to make sure I'm seeing all my data?

* If you feel like you're missing some data, add both the www and the non-www version of your domain to your Webmaster Tools account. Take a look at the data for both sites.
* Do a site: search for your domain without the www (e.g. [site:example.com]). This should return pages from your domain and any of your indexed subdomains (www.example.com, rollergirl.example.com, etc.). You should be able to tell from the results whether your site is mainly indexed with or without the www subdomain. The version that's indexed is likely to be the version that shows the most data in your Webmaster Tools account.
* Tell us whether you prefer for your site to be indexed with or without the www by setting your preferred domain.
* Let everyone else know which version you prefer by doing a site-wide 301 redirect.

How do you avoid the newbie mistakes that cause the dreaded Yahoo Account Suspension?

1) Don't blast Yahoo Answers with a bunch of answers everyday.

One or two answers a day in different topics is the way to go. This go-slow method will prevent you from looking like a spammer and getting reported by members of the Yahoo community.

2) Give good answers.

Take some time to do your research before answering. Yahoo community users will reject you when they realize you are shooting-from-the-lip rather than answering with some helpful information. Anyone can give an opinion but the "Best Answer" designation usually goes to those who provide real help to the questioner.

Believe me, the more "Best Answer" designations you get, the more traffic you'll drive to your offers. Having best answers elevates you in the eyes of the community as someone who is truly there to help.

3) Use multiple email accounts.

Use a different email address for each topic you intend to use for promoting your offers. This tactic is to protect yourself should you get the dreaded Yahoo Account Suspension. In this case, only the offending answer in a particular topic will get that email account banned. Your other accounts will remain active.

It might take you several tries and extensive testing before you find a method that you are comfortable with, a method that virtually guarantees consistent results and avoids Yahoo Account suspension. Trust me on this, I should know. I was suspended by Yahoo Answers twice because I made some newbie mistakes. When they ban you, they never tell you why you are suspended or how to fix it and there is No Appeal! Once you are suspended, you are done with that particular account forever!

By the way, I stopped getting suspended once I applied these techniques, and others, to my marketing.

I use Yahoo Answers to promote my 35 blogs and websites by quickly finding the right Questions to answer. Am I an expert in every topic? No! I just know how to find the information to answer the questions and drive hundreds of new visitors within hours to any given blog or website I choose.

For example, my three favorite information sites are: Answers.com, eHow.com, and About.com. You can find information on just about any topic at those sites. Just choose something from the articles that would make a good answer, rewrite it. Use only two or three sentences, in your own words, and post it.

Never use the information as you find it on these sites. You must rewrite to avoid copyright issues. Rewriting information for good answers is really easy to do. You don't have to be an expert on the topic. The idea is to give just enough information to drive that traffic to your offer.

Besides making money, I like helping people. Yahoo Answers allows me to easily do both. I simply find a Question and give a three to five sentence answer that leads to more information at any blog or website of my choosing where my products solve their problem.

One answer, consisting of three simple sentences, got 145 new visitors to one of my blogs in about an hour! Amazing!

7 Classic New Blogger Mistakes that Will Kill Your Traffic, Profit or Leads

Someone’s always asking me why their blog isn’t getting traffic/making money/converting leads. These are the top seven mistakes that are related to all three of these issues.

1. Being Too Anonymous

The general public still have only the vaguest idea of what a blog is. For those people, this is how it goes. They go to a search engine or a site they already frequent. They search for something or follow a link. They end up at your blog.

In 10 - 30 seconds, from 25% up to 90% of the time, they’ll then leave, not having found what they want, never to return.

What makes the percentage of people who stick around higher? It’s typically 3 things.

A- There’s so much information at that site in a topic that interests them that they will be back.
B- They get the sense that someone is “minding the store”,
C- Least likely, they believe that they will find what they’re looking for or and feel connected to a real person who might be able to answer their question, or direct them to something better.

You can affect those last two by being a real person. I know some people have ghost bloggers, CEOs in particular. They give their general ideas to another party who fleshes them out. Or the other person writes all their blog posts. Some sites have a team of bloggers posting on a site where the actual owner who makes the most profit is never heard from.

And that’s fine. Your blog must still have personality. There’s no law that says it has to be Your personality. But if you have an impersonal blog, you may as well not have a blog at all.
2. Not Linking to Fellow Bloggers

Big mistake. Biggest lesson in blogging is that no blog is an island. Why would you expect people to link to you if you don’t link to them? And if you think that’s giving away traffic that won’t come back, think of it this way.

Unless you chain someone to their computer, they’re eventually leaving. And since it’s illegal to do that, you might as well help your visitor along their way. It is imperative that you develop the confidence to know that they’ll come back. And no one can place a gift in the palm of your hand if you’re holding out a closed fist. 3. Not Commenting on Your Blogs or Others.

No popular blogger catches every last comment, true. But to get to popularity, you better believe they started out that way. You should also comment on other blogs. In fact, forget your link the first few times - you may only need one link to count in your favor anyway. So take the focus off that and add to the discourse.

It’s smart blogging and people don’t forget it.
4. Speaking Like an Expert Before You Know Your Stuff

This is my number one pet peeve. Everyone is an expert on something, but you should Only speak expertly on things you know about. Doctors don’t try to do your taxes for you. It just doesn’t make any sense.

At first, people may listen to you. But once they do what you say and they fall flat on their faces, because of your bad advice, what then? Do you think they’ll be in line to buy your products and solicit your services? Will they become return visitors who may click on advertisements that interest them?

No. Duh!

And yet I see people I think of as truly intelligent make this dumb ass mistake again and again.

It’s so cool to have authority and to have people’s opinions be swayed by your knowledge and expertise, sure. But until you can prove your results, cite supporting research from trusted sources, and maintain a reputation for being a rain maker, you’re shooting yourself in the foot and you’ll probably take your business down with you.

Not to mention all the poor people who are following your bad advice. My favorite thing is when people give contradictory advice on different blog posts in the same week, without even recanting. They state whatever position is popular, just to get visitors, not caring about the fallout they cause.

So if you’re a newbie blogger, how do you get popular without declaring yourself an expert? How can you have power and be influential if you’re the little guy? That’s another article for perhaps later on today.
5. Failing to Capture Leads

There’s no reason why you shouldn’t have some type of lead capture on your site. Even if it’s inadequate and you don’t intend to email your list frequently. Sending them a freebie or some tips once a week is enough to keep your list warm. Send them a tip a day and it’ll be blazing hot. And when your tips hold water, they’ll be ready to spend money on the premium version of your solution to their problem.

The same is true for RSS. More people are using RSS feeds, and sometimes they are fading into the background of other tools they use to retrieve information or do research. For the love of Pete, if you’re blogging, turn your site feed on and test to make sure it works.
6. Taking without Giving and Thanking

It’s great when everyone links to you, pays attention to your site, and generally makes you popular. But you have to frequently remember that you’re nothing without those folks. Send a private thank you note. Make a public one.

Add the link of the person who linked you to a social bookmarking site. Comment. Share. Make a blog post about your supporters.
7. Poor Integration of Monetization Techniques

Another pet peeve of mine.

It’s amazing how many times I pull up a blog that has more in-your-face monetization plans than good content. Not that I’m against money. You know me. I’m not ashamed of being a capitalist. The value exchange is one of man’s best inventions.

However. If you want to have paid reviews, an advertiser block, Google AdSense, affiliate links and paid link positioning on your site all at the same time, blend, darling. You can get all that stuff on your blog, and more, if you’ll simply position it properly.

If you don’t know how? Hire a designer.

Okay. I think that was all seven. A long article, but it’s worth it if any one of those seven points puts money in your pocket, traffic in your site, or leads in your sales process.

When writing a blog post it is important to remember our readers expect to be entertained and informed. Of equal importance is the format in which the content is presented to them. An easy to read layout that doesn't mince words is usually preferred.

Here are 6 tips to keep in mind when posting:

1) Get to the Point

Every post you do should have a specific reason. You're writing to convey information or express your opinion on something. Get to it and let your readers know how you feel or what information you may have that could be of interest or benefit to them and how. We're not writing a novel with the intent to keep readers in suspense and string them along.

2) Maintain your personality

Blogging allows you to express yourself or impart information in your own unique style of delivery. This is what makes it so entertaining to many readers and this is many times why they subscribe to your blog. Let your personality shine thru since this will be what makes you stand apart from all the other bloggers. Whether it may be sarcasm, wit, enthusiasm, or a more analytical and to the point delivery your readers have chosen your blog for its information and also the way it is presented to them. Don't lose sight of this, continue to be you.

3) Be consistent

This is important both in style and subject matter. You've picked a particular niche to speak about and have attracted avid readers due to their interest in this subject. Do veer off onto other unrelated issues or topics for any significant period of time or you will confuse and lose your readers.

Your writing style also needs to be consistent. As we spoke of earlier, readers were in part attracted to your blog for your particular and unique style of delivering your opinion and/or information. If it ain't broke don't fix it!

4) Write Attention Grabbing Headlines

Your headlines can be controversial, cynical, or humorous. Write them in such a way that your subscribers will be curious as to what you're referring or why you may be referring to something in a certain way. Play on their emotions; shock, humor, sympathy, or even intrigue will generally catch their attention compelling them to read more.

5) Reader friendly format

When blogging present your content in an easy to read fashion. By using bullet points or numerical listings you have enabled subscribers and visitors alike to easily follow along or even refer back to particular portions of the content. This type of layout is also easier on the eyes due to the spacing involved with a listing format as opposed to words and sentences that seem to run together in a paragraph type of formatting.

6) Optimize your post with keywords

By correctly using keywords within your content you will make it easier for the search engines to find your content so it can be displayed in their search results for anyone looking for information related to what you've posted on.
