				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h1 id="whatdocumentstransformanideaintoaproduct">What Documents Transform an Idea into a Product?</h1>
<p>Converting an idea into a product is a process that has been accelerating, but what documents or thoughts are essential in that process?</p>
<p>Lean thinking is great, but it doesn’t justify being sloppy.</p>
<p>Over the past two decades I’ve helped companies transform crazy ideas into products. Many of those products were profitable, others flopped, and yet others were killed before they were even offered for public sale.</p>
<p>I’ve lived the idea-to-product process over and over again.</p>
<p>As a process wonk I’ve learned to recognize the underlying steps that are involved in developing lasting products. Sure in the name of speed these steps can be skipped.</p>
<p>Sometimes that is warranted, even needed. Sometimes getting shipping the product, any product is more important. Getting a product into a new market, generating needed revenue, or beating a competitor can often lead to other wins down the road.</p>
<p>But there is a cost to cutting corners and skipping steps.</p>
<p>Ask any engineer. They’ll tell you, <em>if you don’t have time to do it right the first time, when will you ever have time to go back and fix it later?</em>.</p>
<p>They’ve learned through many painful technical foibles that trying to fix products later is often fruitless.</p>
<h2 id="twothoughtsfirst">Two Thoughts First</h2>
<h3 id="battlingperfectionism">Battling Perfectionism</h3>
<p>There’s an underlying tension here: battling perfectionism.</p>
<p>I have it and must consciously battle it. </p>
<p>As <a href="http://sethgodin.typepad.com/files/theshipitjournal.pdf">Seth Godin says, “Ship It”</a>. As you develop your mindset and watch for opportunity take Seth’s words to heart. It is important to ship something.</p>
<h3 id="walkquickly">Walk Quickly</h3>
<p>The key is to walk quickly through these steps. Thinking lean and shipping early doesn’t mean skipping these steps completely makes sense.</p>
<p>Instead think through the steps and walk through it quickly. </p>
<p>So instead of full documents for each step, have an answer at least in mind.</p>
<h2 id="documentsfromideatoproduct">Documents From Idea To Product</h2>
<p>There are three underlying documents to help you transform your idea into a product: Marketing Requirements Document, Product Requirements Document, and a Product Specification.</p>
<h3 id="marketingrequirementsdocument">Marketing Requirements Document</h3>
<p>The first step in this process is capturing the market need or opportunity that you intend to solve. </p>
<p>Remember products that do not address problems; well they aren’t products.</p>
<p>The phrase from the movie <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0097351/">Field of Dreams</a> that <em>if you build it, they will come</em> is terrible advise for product innovators.</p>
<p>They do not come. They do not buy.</p>
<p>These are just hobbies. There’s nothing wrong with having hobbies, just don’t masquerade them as a business creating products.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marketing_Requirements_Document">Marketing Requirements Document</a>, or MRD, is simply a means to capture <em>what your product should solve</em>. Specifically that means:</p>
<ul>
<li>What problem(s) are being addressed?</li>
<li>Who is having those problems?</li>
<li>What options they have (competition)?</li>
</ul>
<h3 id="productrequirementsdocument">Product Requirements Document</h3>
<p>Once the market opportunity is identified the next step is to think through what the product should to solve the market problem. This is captured in a <a href="!wiki">Product requirement Document</a>.</p>
<p>The product requirements document, or PRD, starts to shape what the product will actually become. </p>
<h3 id="productspecification">Product Specification</h3>
<p>The difference between a <em>requirement</em> and a <em>specification</em> has been the source of much discussion.</p>
<p>The best summary I can give is simply:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>A requirement defines what should be done, and a specification defines how it will be done.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Defining the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_design_specification">Product Design Specification</a>, or PDS, is where you can capture the specifics of how the product will be implemented.</p>
<h2 id="what’syournextproduct">What’s your next product?</h2>
<p>Get ready: MRD to PRD to PDS. </p>
<p>Walk through the thought process for these three documents and get that product out there and <em>ship it</em>.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you are a business owner and find yourself being both the boss and main employee?</p>
<p>Do you find that your business income is tightly linked to your physical presence?</p>
<p>Do you feel like you can’t truly live life? </p>
<p>I’ve been there. I’ve also heard the excuses:</p>
<ul>
<li>I can’t go mountain biking with my kids.</li>
<li>I can’t go snowboarding</li>
<li>I can’t …</li>
</ul>
<p>The adventures are all different, but the reasoning is quite similar. Often it sounds much like this:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>If I fell and broke my wrists we’d be in deep trouble. We’d lose everything.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Does that resonate with you?</p>
<p>Then you might be on a <strong>business treadmill</strong> and it is time to jump off.</p>

<h2 id="8020rule">80/20 Rule</h2>
<p>The Pareto principle, also called the 80/20 rule, states:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>For many events, roughly 80 percent of the effects come from 20 percent of the causes.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>This principle was observed back in 1906 and has been applied to countless areas and industries. Joseph M. Juran, a management consultant, suggested that this relates to businesses as well.</p>
<p>That can be done in multiple ways, but the most enlightening is to consider the relationship of income to clients. By applying the Pareto principle to this area we get the following:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>Roughly 80 percent of the income in a business will come from 20 percent of the clients.</p>
</blockquote>

<p>Many business owners find that hard to believe. They say, <em>No way, not for my business</em>.</p>
<p>Then I start asking questions, often just one question:</p>
<p><em>Do you allow clients to pay you more for more services, if they want?</em></p>
<p>Often business owners are taken back and have to respond saying, <em>No</em>. </p>
<p>Too often businesses offer a series of services, but very rarely are clients offered additional ways to invest, learn, and benefit.</p>
<p>Once we start thinking about how we can serve our clients better, providing more options for them to get more help, then we find a way to <em>jump off the business treadmill</em>.</p>
<h2 id="connection">Connection</h2>
<p>Don’t get me wrong. As a business owner you still matter. Much of the time it is your personality, your expertise, and your leadership that clients choose.</p>
<p>I know that I want to work with people I know, people I trust, and people I with whom I *<em>connect</em>.</p>
<p>Jumping off the business treadmill doesn’t change the need for a connection. That’s even more true for health and wellness businesses.</p>
<p>The health and wellness industry is rapidly changing. Consumers being forced to get more involved in how they manage their health.</p>
<p>But there is one distinct difference in many wellness options consumers face. That distinction is different from just about every other form of professional service:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>People must choose wellness providers by paying for service first.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Think about that.</p>
<p>Would you hire a business consultant, financial advisor, contractor, architect, lawyer, or even an auto mechanic without meeting them first?</p>
<p>How many times have you gone in to a gym, doctor’s office, or massage therapist to only to find that you do not like the provider? That could be due to differences in personality, or worse do to negligence.</p>
<p>Either way. I have lost count of the number of wellness business transactions I have paid for through the years that I wish I could have refunded or walked out.</p>
<p>I wished for a way to test for a <em>connection</em> first.</p>
<p>They way to provide that is simply: <strong>Be real and interact.</strong></p>
<p>Be real and interact with your clients and prospects in person or virtually.</p>
<p>Video has become ubiquitous available. Instead of needing to hire a full video production team, most of us have excellent video tools built into our computers and phones.</p>
<p>By showing up in real video, you can break the mold. By recording and publishing video, you can build relationships with existing and prospective clients. They get to know you, and your staff.</p>
<h2 id="whocanyouhelp">Who can you help?</h2>
<p>Business owners often don’t realize they have two different audiences they can help.</p>
<p><strong>Immediate clients</strong> &#8211; all businesses must first focus on helping their direct clients. Deliver and help people. Apply the 80/20 rule to how clients are helped out, let them choose the level of engagement.</p>
<p><strong>Peers</strong> &#8211; watch what works and what your peers in business don’t know and understand, then teach them. That could be developing staff leadership, client attraction process, treatment documentation, etc.</p>
<p>As soon as I start to mention that often business owners will be flooded with a sense of overwhelm, dread, or worse yet fear.</p>
<p>Instead there is a solution … </p>
<h2 id="solution">Solution</h2>
<p>Technology can help multiply your time, your knowledge, and your expertise.</p>
<p>The solution is using the technology available today to develop and sell online courses. The solution is using video based training session, or webinars.</p>

<p>M.S.A. a simple acronym that can have a powerful impact and can indeed change your life.</p>

<h2>M &#8211; Mindset</h2>
<p>Everything must start with your mindset.  Without the proper mindset the rest will undoubtedly fail.</p>
<p>If you launch into something thinking, <i>this won&#8217;t work, but I&#8217;ll give it a go.</i>  How do you think it will go?   <b>Not well &#8211; your mindset is off.</b></p>
<p>I&#8217;m not talking about the unrealistic realm of untethered positive thinking.  Instead I&#8217;m talking about setting your mind on goals and objectives that might be a stretch, but are definitely within our reach.  Find out what is possible and reach for it. </p>
<p>Believe and be positive about the capabilities, the strengths, and the passion you bring to life and your business.</p>
<p>More often than not the deciding factor people use to choose one option over another is the feeling they get from the people in the business.  That feeling stems from the mindset held by you and your staff.</p>
<p>Decide to be positive.  Decide to grasp your gifting and your abilities to help others.  Recognize they are valuable and shift your mindset.</p>
<h2>S &#8211; Strategy</h2>
<p>Armed with a powerful mindset the next step in the three letters that can change your life is strategy.</p>
<p>Thinking strategically about the structures, frameworks, products, and services that you need to build to support your goals and your mindset is an essential step.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t just start doing; start doing with a strategy in mind.  Be clear about how you will fulfill the goals you have in mind for life and business.</p>
<h2>A &#8211; Action</h2>
<p>Peter Drucker stated,</p>
<blockquote><p>What gets measured gets managed.</p></blockquote>
<p>Your action should be concise and focused.  Each step should contribute to a part of your marketing system that can be measured, managed, and improved.</p>
<p>Break down your strategy into small bite size pieces that can be accomplished.</p>
<p>I like to lean into David Allen&#8217;s approach from Getting Things Done and keep it simple.  Do not draw out a full work-breakdown-structure (WBS) for your strategy.   Just document the concise next steps in each area.</p>
<p>Get that done, then figure out what the next actionable step should be.  Allen suggests that too often we try to plan before we have enough information to fully do so.  Instead save the time, document what you very next task should be &#8211; then do it.</p>
<h2>Three Steps to Change Your Life</h2>
<p>If your business and your life is feeling stuck take time to consider how these three letters can refocus your mind, your strategy, and optimize your actions.<br />

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>They aren&#8217;t customers. You raise the wellness of those under your care. The key word in that situation is <em>care</em>.</p>
<p>When you take on the obligation of <em>caring</em> for someone&#8217;s wellness they become something must more than a mere customer.  The people you <em>care</em> for are your clients, or patients.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s look at Merriam Webster&#8217;s definitions of those three words:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/customer">Customer</a></strong> &#8211; one that purchases a commodity or service</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/client">Client</a></strong> &#8211; one that is under the protection of another</li>
<li><strong><a href="http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/patient">Patient</a></strong>
<ul>
<li>a sick individual especially when awaiting or under the care and treatment of a physician or surgeon</li>
<li>a <em>client</em> for medical service</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
<p>Ponder those terms.  Think of the people that you help in your business.   Consider the underlying meaning and impact.</p>

<p>Commodity or care?  What is it that you desire to deliver?</p>
<h2>Commodity Salesman or Caring Protector</h2>
<p>Think about the image above.  Selling shellfish to whoever walks past.  Fluctuating the price to ensure they get sold before they spoil.  You&#8217;d be constantly competing on price with the vendor across the street.   You have no relationship with the people that buy.  Sure some people may become regulars, but if the pricing changes too much &#8230; they&#8217;re gone.
</p>
<p>Contrast that to Ragnar Lothbrok the leading and protecting earl.   I wish I could explain my fascination with the show, but I can&#8217;t.  Perhaps it is my 100% Scandinavian heredity, perhaps it is just a well told story.  But I have been sucked into the History&#8217;s channel retelling of the history of the <a href="http://www.history.com/shows/vikings">Vikings</a>.
</p>
<p>If you step outside the violence and consider how his townspeople viewed their earl, we can start to understand the differences between a customer and a client.
</p>
<p>The townspeople looked to their leader for protection, provision, and leadership.
</p>
<h2>Choose Your Words Carefully</h2>
<p>Our words affect our feelings, and our feelings affect our actions.</p>
<p>One characteristic about the wellness business owners I&#8217;ve met and have the joy of helping is that they truly care about the people they serve.   If you are reading this page, I&#8217;m willing to bet that you would fit nicely along with them.</p>
<h2>Your Focus</h2>
<p>You deeply care about people.</p>
<p>You focus your every effort in helping them improve their health , fitness, and wellness so they can enjoy life.</p>
<p>You are intent on earning their trust as an advocate.</p>
<p>You aim to educate them so they can make better choices for their wellness.</p>

</blockquote>
<p>So be intentional about the words you use as you work on your business.</p>
<h2>Serve Clients Don&#8217;t Sell To Customers</h2>
<p>Make a deliberate decision to banish the term <em>customer</em> from your vocabulary.  That&#8217;s not easy.  I know first-hand how difficult that transition is and I need your help.</p>

<p>Together we can make a huge impact on the world.  We can help people join the cause and move from a sickness focused system to a wellness focused system.</p>
