With the Corona Virus outbreak causing musician gigs and tours to be cancelled, it’s a good time to consider different ways to support your favorite artists.

Here’s a link to a video from Pitchfork that talks about the topic of supporting musicians in the age of streaming. There’s some very good information here for music fans to consider.

As an independent musician, financial support, buying downloads and merchandise always helps. One simple gesture, would be telling your friends and sharing a link to the music or musicians. Finally, just telling the musician, “Hey, I like this song” goes a long way.

Thank you and hang in there!

With the modern landscape of music streaming and the internet, musicians and songwriters know how difficult it is to make any substantial money, let alone an income from their music. One avenue that is often overlooked by musicians, is money through synchronization rights. Simply put, synchronization is when your music is put together (synced) with some form of visual media, such as video games, films, television, or advertisements.

As a songwriter, who has earned some minor (I mean minor!) income through synchronization. I am always looking for more information to help me along the way. Luckily, I live in city like Seattle that offers some excellent resources for musicians. One of those resources is the amazing KEXP. It’s a radio station that offers so much more. (Just check out their webpage and their live performance videos.)

A resource they offer to musicians is Mastering the Hustle. These are live panel discussions with a wealth of information for musicians trying to understand the landscape of the modern music industry. Which brings us back to Synchronization Rights. KEXP recently had a very informative Mastering the Hustle panel discussion on the topic. If this is something you’re interested in, please check out this video.

Have you ever worked on a project where you need a music sample or sound effect? There’s an excellent resource where musicians, filmmakers and sound artists can access an amazing collection of free sounds and samples. The website is freesound.org. It describes itself as a “collaborative database of Creative Commons Licensed sounds.”

I have been using freesound.org for several years. Mostly, I use it to get field recordings sounds to enhance my music and and to create different moods and atmospheres. A good example of this can be found in my recent song ‘Trying to Do Right.”

Mister Nobody by Marwood Williams

I also have my own page on Freesound, named after my favorite guitar, where I have uploaded some field recording sound clips. I hope to upload more sound files in the future.

Please note, there are a variety of Creative Commons licenses types. When using sounds, some licenses require attribution to the author. Other sounds are public domain, which means you can use the sound however you like. Please be sure to understand the Creative Commons license each work offers. Here is a link describing the various Creative Commons licenses:

Here’s an older post from my Website about making your own bass traps. With the years I spent recording since this old post, I will say unequivocally. sound treatment for your recording space is fundamentally important. You can have the greatest microphones and recording equipment. If your space is not treated, however, it is very difficult getting a quality recording. So take a step back to my world of 2010 and learn about creating your own bass trap panels. Hat Tip to Ready Acoustics for creating an easy to follow guide for building bass traps!

From January of 2010:

Due to a New Year’s Computer virus, I am a little behind schedule in mixing a new song for the site. I hope to do that shortly. In the meantime, I spent my weekend building some new bass traps/sound panels.

For building the bass traps and panels. I used these simple PDF plans I found on the web.

In the next week or so, I plan on doing some more recording and mixing, which means I should have some new material up shortly.
