A vegetarian is someone who does not eat meat. A more strict form of vegetarian, called a vegan, does not eat any animal products. This includes milk, eggs and honey. Both forms of vegetarianism have benefits for your health and your soul.

•	Eating a diet based around whole grains, beans, healthy oils, fruits and vegetables can have significant benefits to your body. You lower your risk for heart disease, cancer and obesity. Keep in mind that if your replace meat with high fat cheese and pop tarts; you will not reap these benefits.

•	A vegetarian diet can save your money. Beans and legumes are far less expensive than meat. Replacing meat in your meals and recipes with beans significantly cuts the cost of your weekly grocery bill. One caveat to this is prepackaged vegetarian alternatives. Veggie burgers are really tasty and very nutritious, but they are more expensive than whole, natural foods. You do not have to avoid pre-packaged vegetarian food all together; just do not eat them at every meal.

•	You will feel better about yourself because you will no longer have the guilt of eating another living thing. Many people turn to vegetarianism because they do not like the way animals are treated or they do not like the idea of another living thing dying just so that they can have a hamburger. This burden will be lifted from your conscience when you switch to a no meat diet.

You can make a positive change in how you feel about yourself and the world around you by eating a vegetarian diet. Your body will feel better and you will find a new respect for living things. Increased energy is a great advantage of a healthy well balanced diet free of most animal fats. Increased good feelings come when you realized that you are no longer killing other living creatures so that you can live your life as you choose.
Promises! It’s important to keep your promises.

People trust you when you keep your promises. When people trust you, they know they can depend on you. You will not let them down. You will do what they ask. You will be there for them.

You must show people you can be trusted, if you want them to trust you.

Ovid tells us anyone can be rich in promises. Your promises are precious coin. Make sure you don’t devalue your own promises. Be frugal with them.

Some people promise too easily. They hyper-inflate the currency of their promises like they are the Weimar Republic, or the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, or somebody like that. Their promises become worthless paper.

Never promise more than once a day (using that word). Doing something and not making a promise is better than making a promise and not doing something.

Base your promise on four personal traits— or pillars of virtue:

Justice - that will not suffer you to deceive.

Responsibility - that will not suffer you to forget.

Truth - that will not suffer you to change.

Power - that will not suffer you to fail.

Be where you say you will be. Do what you say will do. Give what you say you will give. You must intend and be able to keep your promises. It’s that simple… and that hard.

Avoid promising according to your hopes.

Woodrow Wilson promised to keep the United States out of the war. Herbert Hoover promised a chicken in every pot. George Bush the Elder promised no new taxes and invited a national television audience to read his lips… Don’t be like these men.

Keep your promises.

You can do it.

You may wonder what depression feels like, or if you have it. Depression is more than just temporary sadness. It affects your entire life; your job, your relationships and even your physical health. Depression makes getting out of bed feel like a chore. The good news is that changes to your lifestyle can improve your depression symptoms. These changes can also help you live a healthier more fulfill life even if you do not suffer from clinical depression.

•	Get outside and get some sunshine. This is not to say that you should be sunbathing for hours everyday, but you do need some exposure to natural sunlight to stay healthy. The exposure to the sun helps regulate your internal clock and ensures a good nights sleep.

•	Get some exercise. If you have any doubts about whether you are physically well enough for exercise, ask you doctor first. Walking is a great way to get your exercise fix in. It is low impact and inexpensive. All you need is a pair of walking shoes. Make sure you are walking for 30 minutes three times a week; preferably six days.

•	Get enough Omega 3 fatty acid. Omega - 3s help your body’s neuron connectivity. You can get Omega 3 from supplements, fatty fish like salmon and from certain brands of eggs.

•	Get enough sleep. If you are not sleeping well then make changes to your routine and environment. Go to bed at the same time every night and make sure that your bedroom is a sanctuary free of clutter and excess noise. Avoid caffeine after 2 p.m. and do not drink alcohol. Take part in relaxing activities before bed such as a warm bath or reading.

•	Have Fun. Try to make new friends and keep in touch with the ones you already have. Go places with them where you can have a good time. This needs to be face to face, not over the internet and you need to do it regularly. There is no needs for deep conversation just get out there and enjoy other people; the feelings of isolation will fade away.

The world lost a legend.

I never thought I’d be writing about this news, at least not for a long long time. For any of us that grew up in the 80’s, Michael Jackson meant so much to us. He was the coolest, every boy wanted to be like him, and all the girls loved him. When I think back of my childhood, some of my fondest memories are watching his videos, which were so groundbreaking and innovative, it was like watching true art in motion.

I recall when Thriller came out, the whole neighborhood was watching it and talking about it. It was an event. Same with Motown 25, when he did the Moonwalk for the first time, at school the next day, kids were talking about how it was a trick done with mirrors and such. Everything Michael did was pure gold.

That’s the Michael Jackson I remember today.

We are all aware of his troubles over the past years, but I hope that people will see his legacy by his work and not his antics off the stage. He touched the entire world. I remember a few years ago being in a small town in the Dominican Republic and kids were dancing to Billie Jean, and I was thinking, wow there is truly no other person that is so universally recognized as Michael Jackson. I think that’s the legacy that he should be remembered for, all the lives that he touched and all the kids that he made believe in magic.

I don’t have many heroes, or people that I look up to. It’s hard to find heroes in today’s world. I idolized Michael Jackson because he was different and he strived to be the absolute best at what he did. He utilized his God given gifts to the best of his abilities. For that, I have so much respect for what he brought into this world. A bonafide trend setter. A musical genius. A global icon. Whatever you want to call him, he is undoubtedly a legend that people will speak of for years and years. I think he was ahead of his time in many ways and probably highly misunderstood.

I choose to celebrate his greatness.

The negative aspects have been focused on too much over the past few years. No need for that now. It’s strange because along with the sadness of knowing that my childhood idol is dead, I sort of feel like celebrating his music and feeling a sense of relief. He can rest in peace now.

Take your place in history Michael, you deserved it.

Here are some of my favorite performances:

Who can forget the most amazing live performance of Billie Jean ever! No one will ever show that much electricity on stage ever again

Here is an unbelievable performance of The Way You Make Me Feel. In his prime, he was the coolest, and no one could touch him on performance:

Here is a medley of all his greatest hits from MTV in 1995. I always thought this was his greatest performance. Just incredible, the consummate entertainer:

The world lost a legend.

I never thought I’d be writing about this news, at least not for a long long time. For any of us that grew up in the 80’s, Michael Jackson meant so much to us. He was…

Two Words: Get Ahead

Get ahead.

A key to getting ahead is never passing up an opportunity to get ahead—which is kind of like the saying “nothing succeeds like success.” Indeed, the two aphorisms operate on similar self-fulfilling principles.

Do you remember the last time you fell behind? Chances are you felt overwhelmed with what had to be done given the resources left and time left on the ticking clock. You may have felt like you were running out of choices. Maybe you weren’t thinking about your helplessness exactly in that way, but that was what was happening. You were running out of choices.

No choice leads to failure as surely as a trail of ants leads to a picnic.

We all know opportunity only presses the doorbell once. So, we must seize each and every opportunity that comes along. Seize each and every one with a white-knuckled grip and squeeze out every last drop of huckleberry juice!

Never do tomorrow what you can do today. And never do today what you can do yesterday.

If none of this quirky advice helps, then consider the sober words of Mark Twain: “The secret to getting ahead is getting started…”

Getting ahead allows for choice and choice is empowerment. The very basis of your ability to improve lies in your ability to choose.

Always choose the way that seems best. Don’t let choosing between two bad alternatives slow you down. Don’t be overwhelmed by too many choices either. Avoid the paralysis of analysis. Choose… If you are going to make a mistake, it’s best to do so going too fast. Get ahead.

Once you get ahead, never let up or go back for the trivial. The purpose of getting ahead is not to take a break or to create time for things that don’t matter. Getting ahead is not about staying even, despite instincts to the contrary held by many of us in middle age.

Don’t stop… That which does not move forward tends to fall back… Always ahead. Always.

You can do it.

Many people sit down and try to memorize facts while exceptional learners try to see the big picture and then connect the ideas together. Too much studying just demonstrates the fact that you did not learn the information the first time. Studying should only be a refresher.

There are ways to boost your studies and make yourself a more efficient student. You have to change the way you look at studying and here is how you can do it:

•	Use all of your senses to connect the information. This is taking yourself beyond visualization and making use of your other senses as well. People retain information better when they are in an emotionally aroused state, so use your emotions to make boring ideas easier to retain.
•	When you are studying practice explaining everything to yourself as if you are a ten year old child. You should be able to simplify most things so that they begin to seem obvious to you.
•	Take a random fact or concept and then link it to another idea in your subject. Once you have done this you can link it to another idea and another. You should keep doing this until you have linked several ideas together.
•	Scan through your text until you encounter an idea that you are not familiar with or are not entirely sure about. When you find these ideas link them to ideas that you already know. Use symbols, metaphors or your fingers to represent the ideas.
•	One of the greatest tools you can use is writing. Write your ideas down will help imprint them into your mind using vision and touch. For added learning read what you have written back to yourself.

You do not need to spend hours and hours studying once you master the techniques that bring about real learning. One last tip is to stand up and stretch every hour. Our minds can only focus for so long before they start to blank out, take a break every hour to keep your mind sharp and your muscles from getting sore.
We are prone to habit.

Habit is in our nature. On this account— to bring about the best in ourselves— we must make sure our habits are good ones. And we must make sure our good habits help us toward our greater goals.

Have you thought at all about that?

Are all your good habits helping you toward your greater goals? When you get up early in the morning— undoubtedly a wonderful habit to have—are you using that time to energize and prepare yourself for a successful day at the office, for instance, or are you frittering that time away?

If you want to be successful at work and sit in the corner office with your feet up on the desk— if that is your greater goal— then start by examining your habits and how they help you (or not) toward your greater goals.

What about those bad habits of yours? Don’t get defensive. We all have them. Some people even joke bad habits are what make people redeeming. In any case, your bad habits are almost certainly NOT helping you toward your greater goals.

Change your habits in relation to your greater goals. If your good habits are not helping you achieve your greater goals, then think about ways to redirect or leverage your good habits.

Suppose you floss your teeth daily—undoubtedly another wonderful habit—then how can you redirect or leverage that toward a greater goal, that corner office, for instance. How about leveraging your fetish for clean teeth into a habit for dressing well to impress?

And, if your bad habits are getting in the way of your greater goals, then lose them—the bad habits, that is— however redeeming they might be.

You can do it.

1- You can greet the day with excitement and enthusiasm. Remember each morning when you wake up to be thankful for having another day; it is truly a blessing.

2- You will have a head start. Is it really worth a little extra sleep to have to start each day rushing around because you do not have enough time? The answer is no. Waking early gives you a head start and everything else will fall into place.

3- You will have a brief period of peace and quiet. Imagine time for yourself that does not involve screaming children, crying babies, loud cars or television racket. You can have quiet time if you just get up early enough.

4- You get to take in the glory of a sunrise. They are beautiful as the midnight blue turns to silver and then the sky lights up like a painting. You cannot view this sample of the magnificence at eight a.m.

5- Get up earlier and you have time for a real breakfast. You do not have to scarf something down as fast as you can in the car or at your desk. You have time to sit and enjoy your food in the quiet. Just add a cup of coffee and you have it made.

6- If you get up early enough you will always have time to exercise. Later in the day things come up, but if you work out early you will almost always stick to your routine.

7- You can get so much more done in the morning before the distractions start. Your productivity can be so much greater if you get more done earlier.

8- You have time to plan for your goals. You can pick one thing to do for the day that will help you reach your goals and then you can get it done.

9- One of the best benefits of rising early is the opportunity to skip rush hour traffic.

Financial success comes from avoiding mistakes. Take a red-hot cow iron and brand the below three common mistakes into your leather pocket book:

1. No Plan.

Putting one’s money any old place, like in a cookie jar or a low-yield savings account, is not a plan.

A plan means determining your financial goals and objectives, setting a level of risk, diversifying your investments, tracking benchmarks, and periodically reallocating your portfolio. There are people in the financial industry that can help you create a plan along these lines— more about them later.

Stick with the plan. If investing in that racehorse sounds like a great idea, then do so only with money you can lose entirely without straying from the plan.

2. Starting too Late.

Starting too late forsakes the power of compound interest.

The second strongest power in the universe— after a baby’s suckle— is compound interest— which is the phenomena of money begetting more money, begetting more money, begetting more money, and so on.

Starting too late induces poor decision making.

We become like gamblers trying to double our small stake with a few throws of the dice. If the dice are unkind, we lose it all. About the worse thing that can happen is losing our entire stake, because then we can’t partake in the compound interest phenomena.

3. Misplaced Trust in Financial Advisors.

Bernie Madoff, anyone?

Stay away from money managers or advisors promising outsized gains. As a rule of thumb, “outsized gains” are practically defined as any gains that beat the market averages over time. No manager beats the averages very long… Don’t use just one manager, either.

You can do it.
