Man jailed 83 days for skipping jury duty

McKINNEY, Texas - A man arrested for allegedly failing to appear for jury duty was released Saturday after spending 83 days in jail, a length of detention that a judge called “unacceptable.”

Douglas Maupin was released a day after The Dallas Morning News brought his plight to the attention of a Collin County judge.

Maupin, a masonry contractor, was arrested Feb. 15 after police pulled him over for speeding. Police then detained him on a 2003 warrant for failure to appear for jury duty.

He wrote a letter to the newspaper about his lengthy jail stay, then said in a jailhouse interview that he, his friends and family could not afford his $1,500 bail.

He said his attempt to get a public defender was rebuffed by a jail clerk.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A Mississippi woman who was shot in the head not only survived but made herself tea and offered an astonished deputy something to drink, authorities said Friday. Tammy Sexton, 47, remained hospitalized three days after being wounded by her husband, who killed himself after he shot his wife. A bullet struck her squarely in the forehead, passed through her skull and exited through the back of her head, authorities said. She is expected to fully recover.

Firefighters had to saw off a plank stuck to the head of an 11-year-old girl after it fell on her and becameembedded in her skull with a nail

The freak accident happened when Naomi Easton was playing with friends in a wood in Pumpherston, West Lothian, building a shelter.

A seven-foot plank fell on her at around 8.50pm on Friday when the hut the youngsters were building collapsed.

he length of wood ended up stuck to the girl's head after a protruding nail lodged itself in her skull.

Paramedics arrived to take the youngster to hospital but she was unable to enter the ambulance because the plank was too big.

Pirate Bay founders defy year's jail sentence and order to pay £2.5 million

Four men behind a file-sharing website that has hundreds of thousands of British users were sentenced to a year in jail and ordered to pay £2.5 million in damages yesterday for helping internet users to download music, films and computer games.

In a big victory for the entertainment industries, Fredrik Neij, 30, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, 24, Peter Sunde Kolmisoppi, 30, and Carl Lundström, 49, were found guilty of breaching copyright law in Sweden, where The Pirate Bay site was founded.

The court ordered a payment of £900,000 in compensation for 21st Century Fox and £500,000 each for MGM and Columbia Pictures.

Despite the verdicts, the four announced that The Pirate Bay, which is used by 25 million people, would continue to operate from computers based in various countries around the world. The men, who plan to appeal, will not begin their sentences or have to pay compensation until the end of the legal process.

A schoolboy archer has had a 'miracle' escape after being accidentally shot through the eye by a team-mate.

The arrow pierced Liu Cheong's eye socket, travelled through his head and lodged in the back of his skull.
