Obamacare Navigator Director Is an Illegal

by Tom Fitton, President of Judicial Watch (Shared on Right Side News): In the ultimate insult to Americans, an illegal immigrant who proudly defies U.S. law—and encourages others to do the same—is benefitting from our tax dollars as a subcontractor recruiting customers for Obamacare.

The recruiters are known as “navigators” because their task is to help people “navigate” the complicated health insurance exchanges set up under the controversial law. A few weeks ago Judicial Watch reported the huge potential for corruption in the Obama administration’s navigator program, which has doled out $67 million to dozens of leftist community organizations throughout the nation.

Here are some examples of the types of groups that have received navigator grants from the government; an Arizona nonprofit called “Campesinos Sin Fronteras” that provides services to farm workers and low-income Hispanics; a south Florida legal group that will provide navigators in “racially, ethnically, linguistically, culturally and socioeconomically diverse” communities; three Planned Parenthood branches—in Iowa, Montana and New Hampshire—got a combined $655,000 to serve as navigators.

In the Big Apple a group called Restaurant Opportunities Center of New York got navigator funds from Uncle Sam, according to the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), a nonprofit that researches legal and illegal immigration in the U.S. The health education organizer for the Restaurant Opportunities Center is an illegal immigrant activist named Maria Marroquin, CIS reveals in a report published this week. That means she will be in charge of the publicly-funded Obamacare recruitment efforts for the New York organization, which is known to be a labor union front group.

Marroquin, an illegal alien from Peru, has been arrested for participating in disruptive demonstrations protesting the deportation of fellow undocumented immigrants and calling for amnesty. She is a hero in the open borders movement who publicly came out in a widely distributed video as “undocumented and unafraid.” The 25-year-old also helped create a nonprofit that fights to enact amnesty measures and build “immigrant power” in communities throughout the U.S.

“Marroquin practices the political tactics of left-wing extremists, flouting her illegal immigration status before cowed law enforcers and politicians,” CIS writes in its report, further pointing out that Obama’s amnesty has invigorated her to break the law even more. It’s beyond comprehension that this admitted lawbreaker is essentially working for the government now. “It would be hard to make up something this outrageous,” according to CIS. Few would disagree.

Besides the outrage of hiring an illegal immigrant to promote a U.S. government program, it’s equally disturbing to know that navigators will have access to the sensitive personal information of healthcare enrollees. This includes Social Security numbers, which can be used for identity theft, a rampant crime among illegal alien populations seeking to establish residency and land jobs in the U.S.

Texas Spending Millions To Jail Illegal Immigrants

by Brandi Grissom, The Texas Tribune: Texas county jails spent more than $156.6 million housing more than 131,000 illegal immigrants with federal detainers between October 2011 and September 2013, according to state jail commission data.

“Those are staggering numbers,” said state Sen. Tommy Williams, R-The Woodlands, who authored the 2011 bill that required jails to begin tracking data about the cost of jailing illegal immigrants. . . .

“The federal government has got to get a grip on controlling our borders,” Williams said in an emailed statement. Of the 245 jails statewide, Harris County reported by far the largest number of illegal immigrants and the highest cost. The jail, one of the largest in the nation, housed more than 30,000 illegal immigrants at a cost of more than $49.6 million. . . .

“Immigration is a federal issue, and if the federal government fails to take care of that piece of business, then it’s financially on the hook for it.” he said.

Dallas County spent more than $22 million housing more than 12,000 illegal immigrants, and Travis County spent more than $15 million on 11,000 illegal immigrants, according to the reports. Among the 20 counties that reported the highest costs, 17 reported spending $1 million or more.

Too Much Illegal Immigration

Illegal Aliens on National Mall

by Alan Caruba, Warning Signs: Like many members of my generation, I would not be an American if my Italian and Russian grandparents had not got on the boat and came here. We are fond of calling America “a nation of immigrants”, but what happens when there are too many immigrants, many of whom are here illegally? And that is the problem that has defied a solution since the last big amnesty in 1986.

As Texas Governor Rick Perry said in his book 'Fed Up', “We have already been burned once by false promises of border security in exchange for tying security to other aspects of the immigration debate. President Reagan, in 1986, signed the Immigration Reform and Control Act, which legalized close to 3 million undocumented immigrants.”

“The law was supposed to be a comprehensive solution with provisions intended to clamp down on border security. These provisions were never enforced, and the subsequent explosion in illegal crossings has resulted in some eleven million illegal aliens living in the United States today.”

Amnesty was an issue in the 2012 elections and it will be an issue in 2014 so long the “Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act”, S.744 awaits a vote. It is a very bad law for a number of reasons. First among them is the fact that there are the millions of aliens who are here illegally, but who cost natural-born and naturalized Americans billions.

At a time of high unemployment, American taxpayers shell out hundreds of billions as the result of illegal immigration in the form of:

Welfare costs
Food assistance programs
Medicaid
Primary and secondary school education for children who are here illegally
Incarceration (30% of all federal inmates are illegal aliens)

And these same illegal aliens send billions home in remittances to their countries of origin.

I thought about this as I watched the news coverage of a gathering on the National Mall of advocates of S.744, rallying for its passage.

At the time, the Mall was closed to American citizens, including veterans, because of the government shutdown. That did not stop the “Camino Americano March for Dignity and Respect” from gaining permission to rally. Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi showed up to lend support along with Democrat and Republican Congressional Representatives of Latino heritage.

The Democrats know that, if they issue a form of instant citizenship to illegal aliens, most of whom are Latino, they will have a loyal voting bloc that will give them control of Congress and the White House for decades to come. They don’t really care what impact the expansion of already over-extended entitlement and welfare programs will have on the economy.

Steven A. Camarota, Director of Research of the Center for Immigration Studies, an independent, non-partisan, non-profit research organization, recently addressed the impact of S.744 in an analysis titled “How Many New Voters Would S.744 Create?”

Here are some of his findings:

Based on the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) analysis of S.744, we project that the bill will add 4.6 million new potential voters above the number added by the current level of legal immigration by 2024. The bill would add 9.5 million potential voters by 2028 and 17.3 million by 2036.
Of the new potential voters S.744 would create by 2036, slightly more than one-third would be a result of the bill’s amnesty provisions based on CBO projections, the rest are due to the bill’s large increases in future legal immigration.
Even without the effects of S.744, the current level of immigration will add 5.1 million new potential voting-age citizens to the country by 2024, 8.4 million by 2028, and 14.9 million by 2036.
Combined, the current level of immigration plus the additions from S.744 would create nearly 10 million potential voting-age citizens by 2024, and more than 32 million by 2036.
The 32 million potential voters current immigration plus S.744 will create is slightly larger than the number of Americans over age 65 who voted in 2012. It is more than twice the number of veterans who voted in 2012, and nearly three times the number of Hispanics who voted last year.
For legal permanent immigrants to be potential voters they must be at least 18 years old and have lived in the country for at least five years, allowing them to naturalize. For most amnesty beneficiaries under S.744, it will take at least a decade for them to naturalize.
These projections are only for potential immigrant voters, not their U.S.-born children. The projections take into account deaths, return-migration, and residency requirements to naturalize. We do not estimate the share that will actually naturalize and vote once eligible to do so.

Camarota’s analysis adds up to 17 million potential voters within 25 years.

The United States of America is broke and both parties that have held the White House have contributed to the debt, although it is a fact that President Obama has literally doubled it since taking office in 2009. Entitlement programs such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, will have to be reformed if they are to continue. In their present form they are financially unsustainable.

Now add in an amnesty for millions of illegal aliens and their children, just because they decided to jump to the front of the line instead of seeking citizenship as so many others have. Either we have borders or we don’t.

by Hansi Lo Wang, NPR: As of early Wednesday morning, all of the demonstrators arrested at Tuesday's rally have been processed and released. A U.S. Capitol Police spokesperson also provided the final tally of protesters arrested, and the article below has been updated to reflect that number.

Two hundred demonstrators were arrested at a rally for immigration reform on the National Mall Tuesday. Capitol Police detained the protesters, including Georgia Rep. John Lewis and other members of Congress, after they sat down in the street in front of the U.S. Capitol building.

Rally organizers say they wanted to remind Congress to keep immigration reform on the legislative agenda, which has been bogged down by the ongoing government shutdown and federal spending debate. Tuesday's event followed similar demonstrations over the weekend around the country in support of immigration reform.

68% Oppose Driver's Licenses for Illegal Immigrants

Rasmussen Reports: California last week became the latest – and biggest – state to authorize driver’s licenses for illegal immigrants. But most voters still strongly oppose letting illegal immigrants drive legally in their state.

Adding More Immigration & Work Permits Threatens To Impoverish Legal Immigrants Already Here

Roy Beck, NumbersUSA: The "National Day of Immigrant Dignity and Respect" could just as easily be called the "Anti-Labor Day" or the "Immigrant Perpetual Poverty Day."

All American workers suffer under current uncontrolled immigration policies and would suffer much more if the sponsors of the rallies get their "comprehensive immigration reform" that would give lifetime work permits to at least 11 million illegal aliens and around 20 million new legal immigrants over the next ten years.

But the workers who would suffer the most, would be the legal immigrants who arrived here the last 10-20 years.

That's because the more than 30 million new lifetime work permits under the Senate-passed S. 744 would go to people who disproportionately settle in the same neighborhoods as those previous immigrants and who have similar education and job skills and who look for work in the same occupations.

Recent immigrants and the second generation of earlier immigrants are having a really hard time with high unemployment and low incomes. Most of them are working occupations where employers have a never-ending supply of new immigrants and illegal aliens who are ready to do just about anything to out-compete those already here.

This is not unusual in our history.

People tend to remember stories of immigrants who arrive with nothing and who work their way into the middle class or even riches.

But researching for my books on immigration, I found those stories were the rare exceptions during periods of mass immigration. They became commonplace only after Congress greatly reduced immigration numbers to around traditional averages.

History shows that a sincere Day of Dignity and Respect for Immigrants would be pushing for the adoption of the recommendations of Barbara Jordan's bi-partisan U.S. Commission on Immigration Reform that would cut legal immigration at least in half and would once and for all remove the ability of foreign citizens to illegally take U.S. jobs. That would allow the labor market to begin tightening, something that throughout our history has raised the incomes of all workers, but especially the tens of millions of recent immigrants.

But everything about the rallies was aimed at creating open borders with gigantic future flows of foreign workers that will further depress U.S. wages and force more Americans to become dependent upon the government.

Nothing about the rallies shows any respect for the dignity of the average American worker.

I have told the news media that NumbersUSA is mobilizing our activists across the country to contact their members of Congress and to demand an immigration policy that respects and dignifies all legal American workers -- whether foreign-born or U.S.-born -- instead of rewarding lawbreakers with lifetime work permits to compete against Americans.

Amnesty with work permits is simply not the answer when 20 million unemployed Americans still can't find a full-time job, and when the wages of tens of millions of others are depressed due to Congress quadrupling the level of immigrant workers over the last few decades.

Border Patrol Rep Claims Agents Being Ordered to Stand Down

Shawn Moran, Vice President of the National Border Patrol Council, spoke exclusively with Breitbart News and claimed that Border Patrol management has begun the practice of ordering Border Patrol Agents to stand down and cease pursuing drug smugglers, human smugglers and traffickers, and illegal aliens. He also warned it could lead to illegal aliens entering the country from nations associated with terrorism.

“It doesn’t matter whether it’s drugs, bodies, or how large the group is, our agents are being ordered to stand down by Border Patrol management,” said Moran. "I have received reports from our agents in every single sector from San Diego to the Rio Grande Valley in Texas that they are receiving these orders."

"They are not being relieved in place, they are simply being told that someone else is being dispatched, but none of us have seen that occur," he explained. "We are simply being ordered to stand down and stop tracking and trying to apprehend the criminals.” He discussed the importance of agents being relieved in place when tracking an individual or group.

"Border Patrol senior leadership says the stand downs are a means of addressing budgetary shortfalls and making sure agents aren’t working longer shifts," Moran said. "The Border Patrol has a larger budget than ever, but the agents on the ground have not seen the benefits of an increased budget. The increased budget has not trickled down to the men and women with their boots on the ground."

"They are placing the budgetary concerns before the security of our border," Moran stated. "We have situations where top-level bureaucrats in the U.S. Border Patrol and in the Customs and Border Protection Agency are receiving massive bonuses -- some up to $64,000 --- for finding ways to reduce the pay Border Patrol Agents receive."

"Groups that are outside of human trafficking, human smuggling, and drug smuggling are going to exploit these stand down orders as well, not only cartels but illegal aliens from nations that are tied to terrorism,” he warned.

Illegal Aliens Take Amnesty Demands to the Streets

by Chris Chmielenski, NumbersUSA: Over the next few days, illegal-alien activists and their supporters will hold more than 100 rallies across the nation before marching on the National Mall in Washington D.C. next Tuesday demanding legalization and work permits. The organizers of the staged and highly-coordinated events are calling it the "March for Immigrant Dignity and Respect."

It's lamentable that the nation's 11-18 million illegal aliens are demanding work permits while 20 million Americans who want a full-time job can't find one. In a recent poll, Americans admitted that they do have compassion for illegal aliens, but they have even more compassion for our country's unemployed. And when given the choice between helping America's unemployed or helping illegal aliens, the overwhelming majority choose America's unemployed. Roy has more details in his new blog.

Roy's blog also discusses the new blanket amnesty bill that was introduced by House Democrats earlier this week. The bill, that was coincidentally introduced just a few days before pro-amnesty marchers take to the streets, takes the Schumer-Rubio-Obama amnesty bill, S.744, removes the Corker-Hoeven bord er amendment, and adds Rep. Michael McCaul's "border security" bill that has already been approved by the House Homeland Security Committee.

During the press conference announcing introduction of the bill, Rep. Pelosi revealed the Democrats' strategy:

"We waited for the Gang of 8 to be accepted. We graciously deferred to the Speaker as to the timing, the method, whether it's one bill, two bills, one at a time, singlely, jointly, severally, whatever it is, comprehensive. We're prepared to do whatever it takes to go to conference with a good bill that stops the deportations and is a path to citizenship."

-- House Minority Leader Nancy PelosiWe've suspected all along that any immigration-related bill that is passed by the House would be used to conference with the Schumer-Rubio-Obama amnesty bill, and now we know for sure.

Meanwhile, multiple news outlets are reporting that House GOP Leaders are preparing to bri ng several bills to the House floor for votes. Those same reports also say that top GOP Leaders continue to work on the details for legalizing and granting work permits to most illegal aliens. Because of this, we must ensure that NO immigration-related bill passes through the House until S.744 is officially dead, which can only happen at the end of the 113th Congress or official rejection by the House.

Also this week, we learned that the government shutdown is having an impact on enforcement. The vice president for the union that represents our country's border patrol agents said that he's hearing reports from the field that agents are being told to "stand down" for budgetary reasons. He says this puts our nation at risk by allowing illegal aliens, drug smugglers, and potential terrorists to cross the border illegally and undetected.

Additionally, Citizenship and Immigration Services has sent a notice to all businesses that use the E-Verify workplace verification system, notifying them that the system will be unusable during the shutdown. They've instructed employers not to take any adverse action against employees who are awaiting a decision on recent tentative non-confirmations, and they've waived the rule requiring new hires to be run through the system within three days.

House Democrats To Introduce An Immigration Bill

Jim Avilla and Serena Marshall, ABC News: House Democrats, frustrated by the lack of action by House leadership and fearing all hope of a bi-partisan comprehensive immigration reform bill is lost, are expected to introduce an immigration bill of their own today.

House sources tell ABC News the Democratic bill will mirror the bipartisan legislation passed by the Senate in late June -- including both increased border security and a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants.

Congressional aides who have seen the bill say much of it came from the months of work done by the "Gang of 7," before it broke apart in the House late last month, with influential Republicans abandoning the effort over disagreements on health care costs. . . .

Illegal Iimmigration Shifts To Texas

WASHINGTON -- Illegal immigration along the Southwest border has shifted to the east in recent years, with Texas seeing a rise in apprehensions while numbers in all the other border states have fallen sharply.

The number of people caught crossing the border illegally in Texas rose from 125,000 in fiscal 2009 to 225,548 as of Sept. 19 - just two weeks before the end of fiscal 2013. That represented an 80.4 percent increase over the five-year period.

By comparison, there were steep declines on the rest of the border, with Border Patrol sectors covering Arizona, New Mexico and California reporting 238,141 fewer apprehensions, a 57.2 percent drop over those years, according to Border Patrol statistics.

Tougher law enforcement in Arizona, a strong Texas economy and a greater number of Central American immigrants choosing the safer and "relatively closer route" through Texas could be driving the shift, experts said.

Mexicans still make up more than half of illegal-entry apprehensions, but their numbers have been shrinking, said Michelle Mittelstadt, communication director for the Migration Policy Institute. As increasing numbers of Salvadorans, Guatemalans and Hondurans try to cross the border, she said, coming through Texas would be a geographically more logical choice. ... AARP Supporting Amnesty For Illegals

by Bill Smith: Not only has AARP been supporting Obamacare which will place seniors more at risk as they get older, AARP is also supporting amnesty for Illegals. In fact, the AARP website shared a one sided position on the topic with their members titled A Fix for Immigration. While the article does present comments by members of two different parties, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY), in fact, the positions of both are joined at the hip and advocate for changes in laws which will benefit ILLEGAL ALIENS (aka, "illegal immigrants").

It is interesting that AARP started off the article with the line: "Older Americans have a stake in changing laws for immigrants." Indeed they do. If the the proposed immigration reform / amnesty efforts are not blocked, older Americans will see their income and savings consumed even more by government, Seniors will join in funding programs for illegals and will find their nest eggs dwindling with reduced opportunities to pass on any inheritance to their children and grandchildren.

The threats are also real. Consider the 93 year old grandmother recently raped, beaten and murdered in her home in Douglas County, Nebraska. Consider that in just one county - LA county - "Illegals Cost Taxpayers $1.6 Billion Annually." The total cost associated with illegals nationally is astronomical. This is money that could have been used to support legal Americans or better yet if not spent, would not have increased the national debt.

While AARP may have pander to elderly in the past, many former members after noting AARP's liberal agenda and walked. Informed older Americans are not as gullible as AARP would wish.

AARP long ago departed from the original 1958 vision of founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus. Recommend reading the Forbes article by Avik Roy which addressed "How the AARP Made $2.8 Billion By Supporting Obamacare's Cuts to Medicare." Recall that Obamacare cuts $716 billion from Medicare in order to pay for its $1.9 trillion expansion of coverage to low-income Americans. To quote from the article, "AARP isn't your every-day citizens’ advocacy group. The AARP is also one of the largest private health insurers in America. In 2011, the AARP generated $458 million in royalty fees from so-called “Medigap” plans, nearly twice the $266 million the lobby receives in membership dues."

AARP is not supporting amnesty and immigration reform because it benefits their "senior" members. They are doing so because they see future benefit in advancing their bottom line. Bloomberg identified that "AARP is one the largest lobbying groups in the U.S., with $1.09 billion in revenue in 2009, according to documents filed with the IRS. This is one alleged non-profit very interested in increased income. AARP lobbied for policies that would benefit its bottom line, not its members, according to the report. Cuts to Medicare Advantage, the private version of Medicare run by health insurers, would push more people into the program’s supplemental products such as one provided under AARP’s brand, which offers extra coverage on top of the government’s Medicare program."

U.S. Releases Illegal Aliens Sex Offenders

The news last week that federal authorities had to release 2,837 convicted sex offenders back onto the streets has renewed focus on a Supreme Court case that requires the government to release immigrants whose home countries won’t take them back.

A report released last week by the Government Accountability Office said the nearly 3,000 sex offenders are part of the 59,347 immigrants who the courts have ruled cannot be held, whom the U.S. has been unable to send home, and who instead were released under some sort of supervision as of September 2012.

The GAO took a sample of the sex offender cases and concluded that about 5 percent of the time U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement didn’t ensure that the immigrants released were properly registered with local authorities as sex offenders. . . .

In this case, the sex offenders and other immigrants — legal and illegal — who have been released are thanks to a 2001 Supreme Court ruling in what is known as the Zadvydas case. The court ruled 5-4 that detention for immigration purposes can’t be punitive; therefore, if there isn’t a likelihood someone can be deported, they generally have to be released. . . Obviously lunacy reigns in the judicial system and Homeland security. The former SCOTUS decision may be relevant for non-criminals. However for illegals who are in the USA committing crimes (beyond the actual fact of being here illegally) such as sex-offenders, incarceration remains appropriate.

It has been proven that some of the Democrat leadership in the Senate has no interest in resolving this problem as they have displayed a willingness to have a "relation" with these illegal alien sex offenders and have even been willing to travel to other countries to continue their perverted interests.

Recall, the "unpaid intern" to incumbent New Jersey democrat U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez who was a registered sex offender. Menendez has advanced even farther and has become chairman of the prestigious Foreign Relations committee. Appears he developed a expertise in "foreign relations" during his scandalous time with his unpaid illegal alien intern, his solicitation of prostitutes, and his visits to other countries.

LA County Supervisor Michael Antonovich: Illegal Immigrants Cost Taxpayers $1.6 Billion Annually

Wow - Not all Californians are ignoring the cost of illegal aliens! Estimated $650 Million in Welfare Benefits to ILLEGALs in ONE County - Los Angeles Count, CA.

Evan Bleier at Opposing Views reports: California officials estimate that $650 million in welfare benefits will be distributed to undocumented immigrant parents in Los Angeles County in 2013.

LA County Supervisor Michael Antonovich announced that more than $376 million in CalWORKs benefits and food stamps had already been given to undocumented immigrant parents for their native-born children through July. The latest figures were reported from the Department of Public Social Services.

The data indicated that LA Country distributes about $54 million in welfare payments each month. The benefits that are issued consist of nearly $20 million in CalWORKs and $34 million in food stamps.

The estimated $54 million that was issued in July 2013 is up about $1 million from the nearly $53 million in total benefits issued in July 2012. According to Antonovich, about 100,000 children of 60,000 undocumented parents receive aid in LA County, CBS Local reported.

“When you add the $550 million for public safety and nearly $500 million for healthcare, the total cost for illegal immigrants to county taxpayers exceeds $1.6 billion dollars a year,” Antonovich said in a statement. “These costs do not even include the hundreds of millions of dollars spent annually for education.”

Family of Murdered 93-Year-Old Woman Blames Illegal Immigration - 100% Preventable

Leah Uko for FoxNews Channel 42 in Omaha, NE reported: Members of the community rallied in front of the Douglas County Courthouse Friday to demand government officials start enforcing immigration laws. They blamed illegal immigration for why a 93-year-old woman was raped and beaten inside her home.

Police said Louise Sollowin was asleep in her bedroom when 19-year-old Sergio Martinez-Perez attacked and raped her. She died from injuries.

Perez was in the country illegally and worked for an Omaha roofing company.

Politicians, community members and Sollowin's family blamed government and companies that hire illegal immigrants for why Sollowin was killed. They believed if Perez were not let into the country, Sollowin would still be alive. . . . The Hartznells said they were most upset with lawmakers.

"Our anger isn't necessarily that he's an illegal, our anger is that this was completely and totally preventable. It should have never happened."

South Texas County Flirting With Bankruptcy---Due to the Cost of Burying Dead Illegal Immigrants

Brooks County, southwest of Corpus Christi, may become the first county ever in Texas to file for bankruptcy.

But the problems facing the Brush Country county of 7000 people, which is largely made up of flat, arid prairie with a horizon line occasionally broken by the occasional Mesquite tree, are not due to the issues which have brought down other struggling counties across the country.

Unlike California Counties, Brooks did not pay exorbitant salaries and retirement benefits to unionized public employees. Unlike Detroit, Brooks County was not undone by the troubles of a major industry.

Brooks County is being brought to its knees by the cost of burying bodies.

For the last two decades, Brooks County has been at ground zero of the nation's immigration wars. The main Border Patrol checkpoint on U.S. 281 leading from the Rio Grande Valley to employment centers in Houston and San Antonio, is located in Falfurrias, the Brooks County seat.

In order to avoid the checkpoint, immigrant smugglers have routinely dumped their human cargo into the trackless wasteland south of Falfurrias, frequently telling them that Houston is 'just over that ridge' or 'just a days walk away.' Frequently without water and almost never in any condition to walk across the Brush Country in summer heat which often reaches 115 degrees, immigrants by the hundreds have died on ranchland, their bodies found by people like Chief Deputy Benny Martinez as they patrol the county. Big Business Pushes Congress For More Foreign Workers While Laying Off Americans

by Chris Chmielenski, NumbersUSA: The Big Business lobby stepped up its game earlier this week when human resource officers from more than 100 large corporations sent a letter to House Leadership pushing for an immigration bill that would grant a blanket amnesty and provide dramatic increases in the number of work permits given to new foreign workers each year. It coincided with a "Day of Action" organized by FWD.us - the organization co-founded by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

A few of the companies that signed the letter included: General Electric, Disney, Marriott, Hilton, McDonalds, Wendy's, Coca-Cola, Cheesecake Factory, Cisco, and Verizon.

Last week's monthly unemployment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics depicted a declining situation for American workers. More than half a million working-aged Americans left the labor force, raising the total number to more than 90 million. Plus, a slightly better report from July was revised to show that only 104,000 new jobs were created that month compared to the 162,000 jobs first thought. In June, BLS reported that 195,000 jobs had been created, but last week's report revised the number down to 172,000.

Compare those new job numbers with the 125,000 new work permits issued each month to foreign workers.

Looking at just the sampling of companies that signed onto this week's letter, many fall into service occupations, including retail, food service, and hospitality. And yet, according the August jobs report, the unemployment rate for Americans who consider themselves in the service industry is 8.4% - more than a full percentage point above the national rate. In production and transportation (an industry Coca-Cola might fall into), the unemployment rate is at 8.5%.

As Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) pointed out this week in an op-ed published for The Hill, there's a huge disconnect between business and the labor market. He wonders why so many in Congress are so eager to pass a bill that puts the interests of the business community, illegal aliens, and millions of foreign citizens ahead of the American people. Byron York, a political columnist for the Washington Examiner, also noted that many of the businesses that signed onto the letter have laid off thousands of workers in recent years. He notes that Hewlett-Packard laid off 29,000 employees just last year. Now they want more foreign workers. Cisco has already laid off 8,000 employees and announced plans to lay off 4,000 more. They want more foreign workers. Marriott has announced that they're laying off "thousands" of workers. They, too, want more foreign workers.

California lawmakers approve driver's licenses for illegal aliens

by Sacramento Bee (CA) via GOPUSA: In the waning hours of the 2013 legislative session, the Assembly on Thursday sent Gov. Jerry Brown a bill allowing undocumented immigrants to receive driver's licenses.

The surprise 55-19 vote moved California a signature away from putting into law a measure that immigrant advocates have sought fruitlessly for years, with past attempts thwarted by legislative vote and gubernatorial veto. . . .

In a statement released shortly after the vote, Brown signaled he will sign the bill.

"This bill will enable millions of people to get to work safely and legally," Brown said in the statement. "Hopefully, it will send a message to Washington that immigration reform is long past due." . . .

Does Anyone Care What Border Sheriffs Think?

by USA Today: It's monsoon season in southern Arizona, so Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels has to drive slowly along the hilly, rocky, muddy terrain that covers the 83-mile border his county shares with Mexico.

He scans the horizon to see whether any immigrants or drug smugglers are approaching the 4-foot-high border fence. Glancing at the lights of a city in Mexico, he turns and asks, "Seen any Border Patrol agents?"

Dannels' complaints about the lack of Border Patrol agents along the border suggests he supports a Senate plan to flood the Southwest border with 20,000 new agents -- but he doesn't. He doesn't think border security proposals in the House of Representatives will do much, either.

"The people in my county are very frustrated," Dannels says, looking at the lush green of a valley that will soon shrivel to brown in the desert sun. "They feel border security hasn't been taken seriously." . . .

But of the 17 sheriffs interviewed by USA TODAY, whose jurisdictions cover most of the U.S.-Mexico border, only one said they felt all those new agents were needed. The rest said they feel Border Patrol simply needs a new strategy and new technology.

"They're tripping over themselves now," Hudspeth County, Texas, Sheriff Arvin West said of the current 18,500 Border Patrol agents working the Southwest border.

The problem, West says, is that Border Patrol agents are no longer on the border, but working many miles inland. West has spent 30 years in the western Texas county where most of the border fence consists of posts strung with a few strands of barbed wire. It's dangerous work to patrol the wild, rugged terrain in the middle of the night.

He, like all other sheriffs interviewed, respect the Border Patrol agents who risk their lives to keep the border safe and secure.

"But put them on the damned border," he said. "In some places here, they are 60, 70 miles away. It's going to take some (courage) to go down there. When you first get down there ... you're going to (tick) the drug dealers off. But once they understand that you held the line, they're going to look for weaker spots further down the line." . . . by Tony Lee, Breitbart: An illegal alien brutally murdered Laura Wilkerson's 18-year-old son in Texas, tied his body up, and then doused him with gasoline before burning him.

Wilkerson recalled the harrowing details on Breitbart News Sunday on Sirius XM Patriot channel 125, yet her story has gone unheard in the broader press.

Maria Espinoza, the director of the Remembrance project that memorializes Americans who were killed by illegal immigrants, told host and Breitbart News Executive Chairman Stephen K. Bannon that such crimes "happen every day" in America, even in states far from the border. But the mainstream media, Espinoza said, often do not report on illegal immigrants who have murdered Americans in states like Virginia, Tennessee, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, and Washington.

Espinoza said incidents remain local ones and are "shared" and actually suppressed.
"We don't even hear the person was here illegally in the country," she said.

Wilkerson told the harrowing tale of how her 18-year-old son was killed on what started out as "just a normal school day." Wilkerson's maternal instinct took over when her son did not answer a text from her around 1:30 pm and she went to the school to look for him. While driving around, Wilkerson saw her son's truck parked by a dumpster at a strip mall. After police found her son's backpack and shoes in the dumpster, she suspected the worst.

Wilkerson would later find out that an illegal alien, who would have been eligible for citizenship under the DREAM Act, brutally murdered her son after he offered to give him a ride home. The illegal alien would later testify--without showing remorse--that he punched her son so hard in the nose that he went blind and kicked him in the stomach so hard that Josh's liver and spleen sliced. After ultimately strangling Josh to death, the illegal immigrant then tied Josh up, took him to a field, doused him with gas and burned him. The illegal immigrant was sentenced to life in prison this January.

Espinoza said such crimes were 100% preventable if the nation's immigration laws are enforced. Wilkerson agreed, recalling how her son's murder had been in court days before he killed her son because the illegal alien had stalked an ex-girlfriend. Similar incidents have occurred in states like Virginia, where the illegal alien who stabbed a Virginia teenager to death after asking her for a ride to the hospital had been detained months before the murder.

Wilkerson emphasized that the country had to "enforce the laws that are in place and secure the border" so even illegal alien criminals who are deported are not able to just walk back into the country because "our borders are open." . . .

Wilkerson said. "Until it happens to one of their children or their grandkids they are not going to see it the same way." Espinoza said the Remembrance Project is engaging in a national campaign to memorializing the victims of illegal immigrants . . . She said Americans needed to tell lawmakers to focus on America, Americans, the debt, and citizens who are out of work.

"There is absolutely no urgency to address illegal aliens or illegal aliens's children," Espinoza said. "They need to focus on American families."

Wilkerson said her son had dreams of going into the military like his brother and was a "compassionate" and "gentle" kid who "did not have an enemy."

But now that her son is gone, Wilkerson said the illegal alien who murdered her son had "more rights than he did." Because the illegal alien lived in a so-called sanctuary city, Wilkerson recalled that police could not even ask him the immigration status of his parents when they arrested him.

5 Immigration Falsehoods from the White House

Jessica Zuckerman and Ken McIntyre: Congress gets back to its regularly scheduled work on Monday—and there’s plenty of immigration propaganda greeting them.

The falsehoods from the White Housejust keep on coming, and Catholic leaders have called for clergy to preach in support of the Senate-passed immigration overhaul this Sunday.

On the White House blog, Cecilia Muñoz, assistant to the President and director of the Domestic Policy Council, laid out the Obama Administration’s take on the benefits of “commonsense immigration reform.” The blog, complete with “fact sheets” and the reposting of an animated video, made numerous claims about what the Senate-passed immigration bill (S. 744) would do for U.S. citizens and immigrants alike.

Here is how five of the White House’s latest claims stack up against the facts.

1. CLAIM: The Senate-passed bill would reduce the deficit.
FACT: It would explode the deficit.
While a properly functioning immigration system could indeed help reduce the deficit and grow the economy, the amnesty portion of the Senate bill would be extremely costly for American taxpayers, particularly in the long run. As Heritage senior research fellow Robert Rector has explained:
"Amnesty and citizenship would make 11.5 million illegal immigrants eligible for Social Security, Medicare, Obamacare, and more than 80 different means-tested welfare programs such as food stamps and public housing. The average illegal immigrant is 34 years old and has a 10th-grade education. At that age, education levels would increase very little after amnesty.

Under the Senate-passed amnesty bill, each current illegal immigrant would receive more than $900,000 in government benefits over his lifetime while paying around $300,000 in taxes—a net cost of more than $600,000 to taxpayers. Even if the wages of amnesty recipients were to soar by 25 percent, the long-term costs per recipient would be more than $500,000—costs ultimately borne by the American taxpayer."2. CLAIM: The Senate-passed bill would increase wages.
FACT: Many workers’ wages would decrease.
The wages of formerly illegal immigrants would likely increase, as Heritage has also projected, under the bill. However, many legally present workers would find their wages lower, as immigration expert George Borjas of Harvard found.

3. CLAIM: The Senate-passed bill would eliminate visa backlogs and reduce wait times.
FACT: It would overwhelm the current immigration system.
The current immigration system is slow and overly complex. Yet rather than address these problems, S. 744 would thrust millions of additional people into the system by granting amnesty to those who are in the U.S. illegally and unrealistically requiring our immigration services to first clear the backlog of those waiting to enter the country legally.

This is certainly a commendable goal. ;Without real reform to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, however, arbitrary mandates to clear the backlog are only likely to overwhelm the system.

4. CLAIM: The Senate-passed bill would provide a “lengthy but fair” path to earned citizenship.
FACT: Amnesty itself is inherently unfair.
Amnesty is deeply unfair to all those who waded through the complex and convoluted immigration system to come and remain here legally, and the approximately 4.4 million who at this very moment are waiting in line to come.

Indeed, amnesty comes in many forms, but in all of its variations, it discourages respect for the law, treats law-breaking aliens better than law-following aliens, and encourages future illegal immigration.

5. CLAIM: The Senate-passed bill would improve employment-based visa programs.
FACT: It would make the process worse.
Take the H-1B visa program, which allows employers to hire qualified immigrant workers to fill highly skilled positions. Through this program, employers may draw from a larger hiring pool of qualified applicants to fill vital positions. The idea is to keep jobs in America while also encouraging job creation and employment opportunities.

However, the Senate bill would impose a list of new restrictions on employers of H-1B visa recipients. These include requiring employers to pay higher wages to most H-1B workers than current U.S. workers and other requirements that would create a bureaucratic nightmare for employers and put them in legal jeopardy.

New Obama policy warns agents not to detain illegal immigrant parents

by Stephen Dinan, The Washington Times: The Obama administration issued a policy . . telling immigration agents to try not to arrest and deport illegal immigrant parents of minor children — a move that adds to the categories of people the administration is trying not to deport.
In a nine-page memo issued Friday, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said agents should use “prosecutorial discretion” to try to avoid detaining parents and, if parents are detained, agents should make sure they have the ability to visit with their children or participate in family court proceedings. . . .

It’s not clear how many illegal immigrants could be aided by the latest guidance, nor how many parents already in the deportation pipeline could be released or transferred. However, some cases already bubbling up could be affected. Earlier this month, immigrant rights groups protested and managed to win a one-year stay of deportation for an illegal immigrant in Ohio who is the chief provider for his family, including a child with cerebral palsy.
