SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization. It’s an all-encompassing term, and quite honestly, a very big and vast field. However, in a nutshell, SEO refers to the process of optimizing a website with the aim or purpose of getting ‘organic’ or free traffic on it through search engines, such as Google, to name one.

WordPress and SEO

While WordPress is an excellent Content Management System (CMS) particularly in terms of being SEO-friendly, it is still very important to optimize WordPress-powered websites and blogs for search engine traffic, organic visitors, improving on-page metrics such as conversion rates and CTR’s as well as improving the overall user experience.

In my experience, WordPress is easily one of the most search engine-friendly website-creation platforms. Statistics show that WordPress-powered websites tend to do better than their competitors when it comes to search engine rankings (SERP or Search Engine Rankings Page) and the ability to get organic traffic.

Having said that, SEO on WordPress isn’t something that will happen itself. While WordPress is said to be set-up just perfectly for SEO and rankings right out-of-the-box, it is, at the end of the day, merely a tool that facilitates the processor makes it easier for website owners and developers to optimize and rank their websites.

How exactly can WordPress website owners can go about optimizing their websites or blogs is precisely what we’re going to be looking at in this post. I will only touch upon the basics here but watch this space for detailed posts on each of the points mentioned in this post.

Briefly speaking, here are some of the important and essential things to consider (in no particular order) when it comes to optimizing WordPress websites and blogs for Google, Bing as well as other search engines:

You may have heard the phrase ‘Content is King,’ and let me tell you that it’s every bit as true as people say it is! Meta information refers to the meta titles, meta tags (more or less redundant now) and meta descriptions. These are the snippets of information that you see on a search engine results page. These can be easily configured using a WordPress SEO plugins such as Yoast SEO.

3. Keywords

Keywords are important, as they let search engines know which terms, phrases or keywords are valuable or important to you, and ones they should rank your website for. The process of keyword optimization is a three-part process:

1. Identifying essential keywords – or those which are relevant and valuable to your website, your brand and/or your business. These are keywords that you want to rank for in search engines.

2. Prioritising keywords in terms of importance.

3. Incorporating these keywords in different parts of your website – such as the copy (content), tags, categories, pages, ALT attribute of images, as well as other places on your website as naturally as possible.

Caution should be exercised when it comes to keyword over-optimization though, particularly refraining from a practice known as keyword stuffing.

Believe it or not, media on your website, such as images (in particular) and videos need to be optimized for search engines as well. This is essential in order to be able to get traffic through the likes of Google Image Search, for instance, as well as for the convenience of human visitors. Search engines cannot ‘see’ images like a human can, for obvious reasons. Therefore to rank an image, you need to tell search engines what to rank it for. 7 Essential Things to Look At When Choosing a Good Web Host

Buying web hosting and choosing a good web host can be tricky – there’s plenty to choose from and more than a million-and-one web hosting companies offering all sorts of web hosting services and packages, so it can be a bit overwhelming, especially for someone who doesn’t have any experience with purchasing web hosting.

The truth is that web hosting is something that can easily make or break your website. Think of a web hosting service as the foundation of your online presence – choosing a good web host will allow you to establish a strong online presence, while a bad web host will tarnish it.

And for businesses, where the stakes are already high, having an unreliable web host can be the difference between success and failure!

Here are 7 things that you should look at when choosing a web hosting service, that will not only save you money and resources in the long run, they will also help you establish a strong business, corporate or personal presence online.

1. Reputation and name

This is usually one of the first things that I look at when buying web hosting. The truth is that reputable web hosting services are reputable for a reason – they have provided good, reliable web hosting services on a consistent basis for a long period of time, and have hence built a good, strong reputation based on their success and reliability.

This is why I’ve given a lot of my business to the likes of HostGator – it’s a good reputable brand that is trusted by many in the world. You can choose from other like GoDaddy or other.

2. Plans and Packages

Now, this is important, and a bit technical as well. In layman terms, web hosting packages come in all different shapes and sizes – starting from shared web hosting packages, to dedicated packages, cloud web hosting packages, VPS packages and so on.

• Dedicated packages: these are the cheapest when it comes to price, and hence represent the most basic form of web hosting. Starting from anywhere between a few dollars-a-month to around under $10-a-month shared web hosting is exactly what it says it is – you share a single web hosting server with many different websites. These packages are perfect for small websites since they come at a reasonable price-point, however, large websites may experience performance issues and it might be worthwhile for them to invest in dedicated hosting (more below).

• Dedicated packages: in simple terms, a single computer for one website, as the name implies. Only your website is hosted on the server (hence ‘dedicated’) which means your website has access to all the server’s resources (RAM, processing power, etc). Dedicated packages are hence much more powerful and suited for a large website. It also means that they don’t come cheap, and cost a pretty penny – with prices often starting from several hundred dollars for a single month (!) to even more.

• Cloud packages: Cloud web hosting is a relatively newer kind of web hosting, and for me, it is by far the best solution for medium and large websites. Cloud web hosting packages have the ability to dynamically add resources when a website requires them (such as when there’s a sudden surge of visitors, for instance), and take these resources away from the website when they’re not needed, hence saving money in the process (think of it as clouds or server resources drifting in and away as and when needed).

These are just 3 examples of the most common type of web hosting plans and packages that are being offered. There are plenty of others, such as VPS hosting, grid, cluster and reseller hosting, to name a few.

The next thing that you want to look at the plans that they have on offer. And then there are different plans and packages within each of these options: some plans give you unlimited web hosting space, unlimited bandwidth and the ability to add unlimited domains, while others may put a certain limit on these parameters. It is important to have a look at all these plans and packages in detail, and see if there’s a plan that suits your

This is important. An unreliable web host – which there are plenty of out there – will not just be a huge pain, it will cause you to lose business, visitors and clients. Almost every web host that you come across will promise 99.9% uptime, however, the truth is (and I say this from experience) only a very few of them actually deliver on this promise.

You might also want to have a look at the hardware of the server your website will be hosted on – including the memory (RAM), processor (CPU), as well as the uplink, storage space and bandwidth being offered with them. Here are 3 ways you can do just this:

1. DIY

… or a do-it-yourself.

You can design the logo yourself, provided you have an idea of what you want it to look like (check out LogoFaves – an excellent design inspiration gallery – for design ideas and inspiration), and most importantly, the skill to use a designing software, such as Adobe Photoshop, or CorelDRAW.

A DIY logo means that you end up with a design that looks exactly like you want it to, and you end up saving money that would’ve been spent on hiring a designer, our outsourcing/crowdsourcing the job.

The downside is that depending on your designing skills, you might end up spending a lot of valuable time on this task – time that might be better spent on other things, such as setting up your website and putting quality content on it.

2. Crowdsource

The second option is to crowdsource your design on a freelancing website such as Freelancer.com, Elance, 99Designs or oDesk.

Freelancer and 99Designs, for instance, allows people to start a contest. A contest is essentially you telling what you want and how much money you’ll be willing to pay for it, and then freelance designers sending in their submissions and entries for you to judge. You can leave your feedback on each submission, which allows the freelancer to make the required changes and submit another design. The bigger the prize money, the more (and better) entries you’ll receive, and at the end, you choose the best entry – at which point all files are handed over to you, and the payment is made.

Pretty simple and straightforward.

On Freelancer, the prize money can be as little as $30, however the higher the prize, the more entries you’ll get in terms of quantity, and the better they will be in terms of quality. For instance, you’re certain to get hundreds of brilliant logo designs if you set the contest prize at $300 as opposed to something like $30; the higher the better.

99Designs is pretty good as well – I personally like it because its a specialist website, has hundreds of thousands of excellent designers working on it, and is purpose-built for getting design-related jobs done – so you know you’ll get some excellent entries.

3. Design Firms

The third option is to hire a design firm or a graphic designer to work for you.

While crowdsourcing website such as the ones listed above has pretty much made this once-popular method redundant, you can still hire a firm or a designer to work exclusively for you in order to come up with a logo for your website.

Jacob Cass is one person I know who offers this as a service on his website. Then there are other websites such as LogoDesignGuru and HireTheWorld which are a great platform that put you in direct contact with logo designers. In addition, here is a list of 30 excellent designers (along with their very own logos).

Bear in mind that designers usually charge by-the-hour, so this could go on to be very expensive.

Another alternative is to look in the yellow pages or on Craigslist for local designers in your area and getting in touch with them over the phone. This way, you’ll be able to communicate with them in person and convey your ideas in a much more effective manner.

Concluding Words

My advice: pay someone - a professional designer – to design different parts of your website, including the logo and a good banner. Spend money on it, as your logo will become synonymous with your website’s identity, and will be seen and used everywhere, such as on promotional material, etc.

If you’re not proficient in designing yourself, outsource it. I’ve crowdsourced logo and banner designs, among others, plenty of times on Freelancer, Elance and 99Designs, and I’ve always ended up with some excellent designs. Of course, the more you pay, the better the designs you get so that’s something to keep in mind as well.
