"Drive" director "turned down" for Doctor Who

The director of last year's hugely popular film Drive, Nicolas Winding Refn, has revealed that he wanted to direct an episode of Doctor Who - but was turned down. He told Short List.com:

I would have loved to direct Doctor Who but they didn’t want me — they turned me down last year. Maybe if they revive Blake’s 7 I could do that. I love it. It’s great. That could be fun to update.

PREVIEW: Goodbye Bannerman Road

For the final series release of The Sarah Jane Adventures, fans have been treated to a documentary - a first for the DVD range of the Doctor Who spin~off series. Goodbye Bannerman Road: Remembering Elisabeth Sladen is a twenty~minute tribute to the late actress featuring Daniel Anthony (who played Clyde Langer), Anjli Mohindra (Rani Chandra), Gary Russell (Script Editor) and Matt Smith (The Eleventh Doctor).

Even as the film starts, the mood is incredibly emotional with newly shot footage of Sarah Jane's house as it stands today accompanied by a moving soundtrack. Daniel and Anjli are interviewed outside their old stomping~ground and it's clear from their stories that Lis meant a great deal to them; and still does. The former refers to the actress as a "lovable headmistress" though, interestingly, goes on to discuss her insecurities.

Matt is usual ebullient self when chatting about Sladen's immense career, expressing his admiration for an actress who came back into Doctor Who and then managed the feat of walking away with her own show. He laments her loss, saying: "... to get her on Doctor Who would have been a dream". Similarly writer Gary Russell, also a close friend of Lis, was effusive about the actress though, for no moment, was tempted to continue the television series without her. Again, the attention to detail, filming Russell in Sarah Jane's house was a nice touch.

Another appreciated addition, though deeply upsetting at the same time, was the reaction to her death on chilren's show, Newsround; where Daniel and Tommy Knight (who played Sarah Jane's "son", Luke) read out comments from thousands of young people who had contacted the website. Simple, yet astonishing in just how Lis affected the young and old.

Taking all the care and attention that the "classic" Doctor Who DVD range receives, Chris Chapman, who has made some terrific documentaries for the aforementioned range (including, most recently, the wonderful Looking For Peter on The Sensorites), has produced a loving tribute to a well~loved actress. Goodbye Bannerman Road, with its close collection of interviewees and meaningful location work, is a warm, yet all too brief, feature that will undoubtedly leave an impression of a great, great lady; despite the incredibly sad nature of the film.

Further credit must also go to 2|entertain for including such a magnificent tribute, especially as the Fifth Series release has had a much quicker turnaround than previous series releases (indeed, plaudits to the producers for getting this documentary together in such a short space of time; a matter of weeks, I believe).

Goodbye Bannerman Road is a perfect reminder of what made The Sarah Jane Adventures so very special - Sarah Jane herself, Elisabeth Sladen.

10 TW/SJA Characters Who Should Appear In Doctor Who

If you don't know what TW and SJA mean, then please stop reading. Now. Thanks. Anyway, yup! It's yet another list! This time, Blogtor has been looking at the Whoniverse and included below are ten characters (well there's actually more, I cheated with some) from The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood who would should make appearance in Doctor Who. Let the insanity begin...

Anyway, here's the real ten...

10. LOIS HABIBA

The late re~write for Martha Jones (yeah, thanks Law & Order - you thieving bastards!), the secretary turned world~saver proved to be quite the hit for the third series of Torchwood. Actress Cush Jumbo pushed aside any Freema comparisons with wads of personality and a soupçon of assured sexiness. She was last seen banged up in a cell, at the end of Children Of Earth; maybe it's time Doctor Who sprung her out...?

9. GITA & HARESH CHANDRA

Facing the difficult task or "replacing" Chrissie and Alan Jackson (who both very nearly made the Top 10), Rani's parents fitted in perfectly into Bannerman Road. Ace Bhatti, who recently ripped it up bad~style on Eastenders, played the straight head~teacher down a tea whilst his missus, played by Mina Anwar, provided constant comic entertainment (that she previously demonstrated on The Thin Blue Line) with her continual, though unintentional, needling of Sarah Jane.

8. ANDY DAVIDSON

One of the features of the most recent Torchwood series, Miracle Day, that warmed my heart greatly was the appearance of this guy, played with affable charm by the lurvely Tom Price. I was so pleased that, even though it was a "big" US production, the "little" guy was still remembered. And what a journey for "PC" Andy Davidson. From a loyal, though lowly copper, popping up every now and again during the first two series to helping save the world on more than one occasion. If anything, out of persistence, Andy deserves a shot at Who.

7. DIANE

One of Torchwood's shining moments was the time~traveling tale from Series One, Out of Time, where three people from the 1950s ended up in modern day Cardiff. One of these unfortunate human beings was Diane, a spunky pilot with a fine line in make~up and a rather trouser~tightening approach to sex (nice one Torchers!). Diane got chummy with Owen and would later turn up to haunt him, thus helping cause the apocalypse (nearly), in the finale End of Days. Louise Delamere's fine performance as a woman out of time wherever she lay (a bit like my first wife) was genuinely touching and is still one of the show's highlights. Would make for an excellent companion to the Time Lord.

6. RANI & CLYDE

Like her parents, Rani had the unenviable task of replacing a Bannerman Road fave. And, for her, it was an even more Herculean task as she was taking over from, what ostensibly was, a "companion". But such a hit was she that the words Maria Jackson were but a faint whisper by the time she's finished her first year with Sarah Jane & Co. Similarly, Clyde became the star of the show towards the end, nabbing all the best lines and receiving some tremendous stories (The Curse of Clyde Langer, for example). The couple made for an electric watch (Series 4's The Empty Planet demonstrated this neatly) and I can't recall such a likable and fun duo on television. I doff my cap to both Anjli Mohindra and Daniel Anthony and sincerely hope they get some more TARDIS action in the future.

5. BILIS MANGER

Man, this guy fah~reaked me out. With no offense intended towards actor Murray Melvin, he has the look of an utter demon. Sure, he may have a tasty suit and nifty cravat but his crafted skull and piercing eyes made for one of the most delicious villains in the entirety of the Whoeuvre. Bilis was all smiles and pictures when he met some of the Torchwood gang in Captain Jack Harkness but by the time the next episode came long, End of Days, his role as "bad guy" was confirmed. Thankfully, the makers of the show decided to retain total mystery to who he was. We know nothing about him and he flopped off before he could explain his "evil" time~jumping deeds. His appearance was so perfect that I did wonder, whilst surrounded by clocks in his shop, if Bilis would be revealed to be The Master (which I'm glad they didn't, by the way). Having said that, maybe he did just hop into one of the grandfather clocks and Vworp away...

4. ALICE GUPPY & EMILY HOLROYD

Did someone say Torchwood 1899: The Series? if not, they blummin' should! Making a splash in the Series 2 finale (Fragments and Exit Wounds), these two ladies have a certain Vastra and Jenny feisty quality about them too. Their introduction to the Whoniverse saw them killing Captain Jack, savagely torturing him and then making him work for Torchwood - not bad ladies. Not bad at all! Despite starring in Outcasts (a BBC sci~fi misfire, to put it politely), Amy Manson would make a terrific ally/enemy for The Doctor as Guppy whilst BFF Holroyd, played by Heather Craney (a Holby City and Eastenders stalwart) is on hand to straddle any passers~by. And aren't their outfits purty?

3. THE SHOPKEEPER

Talk about text~book enigmatic, this guy is The Enigma~tron! He is positively rolling in riddle~ocious~ness (it's a word!). This chap first popped up in The Sarah Jane Adventures, trapping our heroes and then subsequently splitting them up and sending them back in time - the nerve! But he wasn't a bad guy (oh no!), The Shopkeeper was just keeping the universe in balance - not unlike a certain other friend of Sarah Jane's... Played with wonderful suavetry (it's a word!) by Cyril Nri, even got a brief return in the final series (Sky). One certainly hopes that he is indeed another Time Lord, awaiting to be found...

2. JILLY KITZINGER
Hhmm. Lauren Ambrose*.

1. THE TRICKSTER

This guy. *Does Goodfellas style hang gesture* This guy! So immense was his appeal, so awesome and mighty was his darkness that not only did he get a mention in both Doctor Who and Torchwood (well, The Trickster's Brigade did in Turn Left and Immortal Sins), but The Doctor himself had to crossover to The Sarah Jane Adventures in order to defeat him! The stand~off between them during The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith was quite something with a fangasm~inducing mention of The flippin' Key To Time.

The Trickster's original appearance, Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane?, remains my favourite of his trilogy; where the lurvely Elisabeth Sladen was replaced by the equally lurvely Jane Asher. Writer Gareth Roberts created one of the great Whoniverse villains; meddling with time and people with horrific consequences, just for fun. The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith displayed a memorable, and deeply unsettling, view of the future juxtaposed with some heart~breaking moments for Sarah Jane.

Special mention must also go to the man behind the cloak, Paul Marc Davies who also manged the feat of appearing in the Doctor Who story Utopia and the Torchwood tale, Exit Wounds. The Trickster, without a doubt, is the one character from the spin~offs that deserves to face~off against The Doctor on a Saturday night around 7pm.

BBC Worldwide have released a new trailer for the upcoming game, The Eternity Clock - watch it in the player below. It will launch globally, initially on PS3 and PS Vita via the PlayStation Network in March 2012 with a PC version due shortly after.

This is the first game-play trailer that showcases the monsters in the game. Players will be up against the most feared monsters from the Doctor Who Universe – the Cybermen, Daleks, Silurians and The Silence.

The "comedy" show Room 101 has returned to the BBC (with a new format) and on its latest episode, Doctor Who was discussed - watch the segment in the player above. For those who are not aware, panelists chat about things they hate, and try to to get them banished to Room 101.

10 Villains/Aliens/Baddies Who Should Return To Doctor Who

That's right, another list! (A few more to come, list fans.) This time, I've compiled a list of "Villains"/Aliens/"Baddies" (for want of better expressions) who I'd like to see back in Doctor Who. You'll notice I've included "baddies" from the entirety of the Whoeuvre (just to keep the weirdos happy*). And sincere apologies to the Mandrels, who just missed out...

10. KRYNOID
Though not the most original idea for a Doctor Who alien, the appearance of the intergalactic weed was handled superbly in The Seeds of Doom. Starting off as a simple, creepy pod (remember, no touch!) and then infecting its host in the most horrific of fashions, the Krynoid was an unstoppable behemoth that threatened our lurvely planet. And this was all because of an even greater monster, cue derisive snort, man's greed!!!!

9. SYCORAX
Although some people call them "Bum Face", tsk tsk, the Christmas invaders from 2005 had a primitive and brutal design with a wonderfully optimistic view on world domination. I'm sure the Sycorax should at least have another go at trying to enslave humanity, or perhaps a revenge story like the brilliant Doctor Who Magazine comic strip, The Widow's Curse. But someone tell their "leader" to hide the big effin' red button next time.

8. THE FLOOD
Well, I think that's where they're called. This unseen alien turned our Mars "heroes" into the most frightful beasts, forcing them to do their bidding (not unlike the Krynoid). The water creatures were a threat so malevolent that poor old Bowie Base One bit the big one before it even had time to even welcome The Ice Warriors. Of course, the episode itself revealed an even greater monster/threat to the universe - The Doctor himself! *cue gasp*

7. TERILEPTILS
Now that's a design! Looking like they'd just stepped off the set of the Culture Club Karma Chameleon video, these guys from 1982's The Visitation were bad boys and had the scars to prove it. Their species fascinated the dreamy Fifth Doctor who couldn't equate their love of beauty and war. Although their execution wasn't the best, the design of the Terileptils was superb and I can imagine an updated version working magnificently - especially if they take part in another history~defining moment. (Factoid fans may remember they also got name~checked in The Pandorica Opens.)

6. THE "DEVIL"
I can't be the only person who thought the Horny one was gonna blast through the void ball at the denouement of 2006's Army of Ghosts?? The big guy didn't have much to say, stuck in his titular pit, but when he did possess people - ooooo, shivers baby! His (her? its??) brief appearance was about as scintillating as you get and, for sheer evil, this guy (gal? thing??) will not be beaten! The Impossible Planet's oldest resident had a thoughtful back~story and some fine, fine CG work.

5. THE MARA
Kinda is one of my all~time favourites and, with the recent excellent new version on DVD, is one of the few perfect Doctor Who stories (for me that is - I understand the tale has its detractors). And its enemy is a mind~effing nasty. Just witness poor Tegan's battle with early Eighties pop video~style antics with that weirdo from The Bill. A journey that was about as trippy as Doctor Who got in them olden times. Of course, the greater monster in that story was, blah, blah, blah... (I'm seeing a theme here). The Mara was so strong that it popped up in a sequel, Snakedance (where the greater monster, etc...), and even got a name~check by Captain Jack in Torchwood.

4. THE FAMILY OF BLOOD
And you think the families in Channel Four's Shameless are a bad bunch. The Bloods, as no one calls them, are the original neighbours from hell (or Aubris). So naughty, in fact, that The Doctor made himself human - which, when you think about it, is an utterly chilling thought - just to get out of their way. Of course, he was just being nice as these blighters only survive a few months or so (though his punishment was a bit harsh, almost unpleasantly so for him). They got split up in the end but one wonders if some enemy of The Doctor could reunite them for a last hurrah as revenge.

3. THE SILENCE
What do you mean there's nothing in the picture above? #silencejoke Though they returned for the Series 6 finale, The Wedding of River Song, I can't help feel the big~handed ones were slightly underused (perhaps intentionally). The Silence are an enigmatic bunch, with that not even being their species name (apparently), and one would hope a better retaliation is in store for Doctor Who after he so casually announced genocide on them. I mean, what actual harm did the huge~headed ones do to humanity? If anything, they helped. Didn't they....?

2. ZYGONS
Like a certain Davey T, I absolutely adore these bubbly human~inhabiting little fruitcakes. Sure, their Skarasen may be a sock with a button for an eye and you might just be able to see a microphone at the front of their costume but the Zygons are a beautiful creation that, in all honesty, would still look amazing on screen today. Their only telly story, Terror of the Zygons, is a genuine masterpiece, thus making them even more lurveable.

1. DAVROS
Who doesn't like a bit of Dave Ross action? I mean, he invented the flippin' Daleks! Actually, and some of the more regular blog~a~trons out there will already know this, I am not a fan of the Daleks. Never have been. But Davros adds so much more to their singular view of the universe and their bumps and plungers. Michael Wisher's original performance of the scientist was mesmeric and repulsive in equal measure (a bit like my first wife); a role that he truly made his own. Until 2008 came along with Julian Bleach delivering his nihilsitic take on the universe like it was Shakespeare in The Stolen Earth and Journey's End. Sadly we didn't get to see a pre~Dalek Davros in that story, as was planned, so maybe this can be rectified for his return? (And preferably without the pepper~pots please.)

BBC Books have announced the forthcoming publication of Doctor Who: Dark Horizons by J T Colgan, an all-new Doctor Who adventure starring The Doctor, as played by Matt Smith. Dark Horizons will be published on 7 July 2012, as a £12.99 hardback. Synopsis and cover art below:

"Now, you may or may not have noticed, but we appear to be on fire..."

On a windswept Northern shore, at the very tip of what will one day become Scotland, the islanders believe the worst they have to fear is a Viking attack. Then the burning comes. They cannot run from it. Water will not stop it. It consumes everything in its path - yet the burned still speak. The Doctor is just looking for a game on the famous Lewis chess set. Instead he encounters a people under attack from a power they cannot possibly understand. They have no weapons, no strategy and no protection against a fire sent to engulf them all. Add in some marauding Vikings with very bad timing, a kidnapped princess with a secret of her own and a TARDIS that seems to have developed an inexplicable fear of water, and they all have a battle on their hands. The islanders must take on a ruthless alien force in a world without technology; without communications; without tea that isn't made out of bark. Still at least they have the Doctor on their side... Don't they?

The BBC have issued promotional pictures of John Barrowman (Captain Jack Harkness) from an upcoming episode of the series, Hustle - click on the images below for a bigger versions. John's appearance will air Feb 3 on BBC One.

Also included is actress Raquel Cassidy, who starred in The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People. Hustle also stars Adrian Lester who recently revealed a desire to play Doctor Who - listen to an interview with him HERE and Robert Glenister (The Caves of Androzani).

REVIEW: The Lost Stories - The Fourth Doctor Box Set

Tommy B is back! And, in fact, some "lost" stories are back too!

Big Finish have reunited, somewhat bravely, Tom Baker and Louise Jameson in two audio tales that were proposed but never finished or broadcast. First up is The Foe From The Future from an original spec by Robert Banks Stewart (Terror of the Zygons and The Seeds of Doom scribe) which sees The Doctor and Leela hole up in a "haunted" stately home - perfect mid~Seventies Who fodder.

Before I continue, it's probably best to broach Baker and his performance. His voice is notably older (of course, he is much older) and this does affect the rhythm and cadence - this is a different kind of Fourth Doctor. Still enjoyable and, at times, hilarious but markedly changed. Once you're used to the sound, however, it's not an issue (and, thankfully, the producers of this story have done a far better job of reining in his Baker~isms than in the Hornet's Nest stories from the BBC).

John Dorney peppers the mainly suspenseful script with many witty and sometimes self~referential gags (a dig at corridors, for example) and the cast play them superbly. In particular, Charlotte, played by Sherlock's Molly, Louise Brealey, lights up the ears with her wonderful accent - could've made such a magnificent companion. She really does sparkle.

Inevitably, at six episodes, the story does tend to drag a little in the middle (a comment that can be aimed at almost every television six~parter) but the incredibly dramatic final two parts make up for any plot wandering. It was admirable to maintain the author's outline but one can't help feel that some editing should have been done, cutting the story down to four parts.

The finale features wonderful sound work and some horrific noises; conjuring up all sorts of unpleasant imagery - not unlike the brutality of The Seeds of Doom. It's difficult to picture telly Doctor Who being able to pull off the audacious time jumping, apocalyptic nature of the closing two episodes (even now), but here, on audio, The Foe From The Future finds a perfect home.

Accompanying is a second story, The Valley Of Death; a four~parter from an original idea by one of the show's legends, Phillip Hinchcliffe (producer from 1975-7). It's another tale that involves time meddling of sorts and a huge jump in locales. The adventure features a jungley opening that switches halfway through to a more familiar London setting with U.N.I.T. involved. The jump does rather jar and the drama, and the threat, rather loses focuses. But it's the Douglas Adams style of the script, the quirkiness and lightness that pulls through.

With even more gags than the previous story, there's also some repeats of giggles from Remembrance of the Daleks and The Invasion of Time. Comparisons can also be drawn with The Android Invasion, with doubles of The Doctor and Leela parading around, but this doesn't work so well in the audio medium.

Noticeably, Baker's tones seem much more livelier and of~the~time than the previous story whilst Jameson still shines as Leela. Beside The Foe From The Future, though, it comes off a clear second.

Also included in the set are a plethora of extras (over an hour!) featuring outtakes interviews from everyone involved (including some fascinating stuff with Louise Brealey chatting about Sherlock) which add a real thoughtful touch to the set. Not just content with ten new episodes, Big Finish lavish special attention for the fans. A very welcome addition to an already fantastic package.

For your listening pleasure here is the Blogtor Who commentary for The Doctor, The Widow & The Wardrobe . Recorded by Cameron K McEwan and Alexander J McKinnon, the commentary can be enjoyed whilst watching the story - though, that's not essential.

Classic Holmes in Sherlock

Actor Douglas Wilmer made a cameo in tonight's Sherlock finale, The Reichenbach Fall. Wilmer played the Baker Street sleuth in the BBC Sherlock Holmes series from 1964-5. The 92 year old actor features in The Diogenes Club scene, shooing Dr Watson away (pictured above). Wilmer starred alongside Patrick Troughton in Jason and the Argonauts and Tom Baker in The Golden Voyage of Sinbad. Below you can compare him as Holmes and from tonight's episode.

10 Characters Who Should Return To Doctor Who

Yes, another list! With some seven or eight months 'til the return of Doctor Who you better get used to this sort of thing... (not really). Below you'll find ten characters that Blogtor thinks would make excellent returnees to the show. Feel free to comment below...

10. TRINITY WELLS
One of the biggest disappointments, for me, in Doctor Who since RTD has left has been the absence of news reader, Trinity Wells. She's one of the few characters to appear in the triumvirate of Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and Who; leaving Matt Smith's Whoniverse devoid of some proper authoritative anchor action. This needs to be addressed! *

9. CRAIG OWENS
Third time's a charm? The Doctor's onetime flatmate James Corden made for a delightful chum for the Time Lord and the chemistry between Smith and the Gavin & Stacey star is palpable. The Lodger and Closing Time, both written by the wonderful Gareth Roberts, showed that boys could be boys even with an alien threat taking place right beneath or, rather, above them. A Trilogy of Craig Owens isn't too much to ask, is it???

8. JENNY WHO
Curiously, according to Russell T Davies, it was at the suggestion of Steven Moffat, that the newly created offspring of The Doctor should be kept alive and not killed off (though SteeMo has since stated he can't remember this). Jenny, incredibly, first appeared almost four years ago and, even more incredibly, ain't bumped into her dad yet. Probably too busy smooching David Tennant...

7. CAPTAIN JACK
Surely Harkness has to make a return at some point?? I mean, his debut was in a SteeMo story after all! (You know, the one where everyone lived? No, no that one. The one with the creepy kid. No, not that one either. You know, the one with the catchphrase. No, the other one where people came back to life. *sigh* No, not that one either. The one where a child with a mask tries to kill people. No, that was a helmet.... *and so on*) Barrowman has said that he would love to come back and Moffat hasn't ruled it out - most likely for the 50th Anniversary, one imagines.

6. THE DREAM LORD
The modern day equivalent of the Valeyard proved to be a hit with the kids as Toby Jones oozed intense calmness and creepiness in abundance as the other Doctor. The ending of Amy's Choice certainly suggested that the Time Lord's self loathing and nastiness had not left him but how should The Dream~a~tron manifest himself again? Perhaps in a delicious smack~down with The Master? That I would lurve to see...

5. VASTRA & JENNY
Phwoar! Gimme a lesbo lizard and her beautiful companion any day and I'm as happy as a sand boy! SteeMo has already stated the a spin~off featuring the couple would be great (though he doesn't have time to write currently). To be honest, the gals should have appeared in the recent Companions Top 10 but I forgot to place them. Let that mistake be rectified and let's see Vastra and Jenny battle off a Victorian menace, perhaps with aid of Jago and Litefoot...?

4. CANTON DELAWARE
Furthering the "gay" "agenda"* is the Series Six opener star Mark Sheppard. Along with The Silence, Canton stole the show as the gruff 6ixties agent with a sharp line in shades and an eye for the handsome man. It's always nice to have a non~British accent in Doctor Who (oh, the irony) and Shepherd added a great deal of style, regardless of his penchant for firearms. Would also make an excellent TARDIS companion.

3. IDRIS
Without wanting to sound like some lustful old man - corr, I don't half fancy the TARDIS. Doctor's wife or not, Suranne Jones' insane Mary Poppins~esque Idris was my personal highlight of Series 6ix. Not only that, her relationship with Matt was exquisite and quite unlike anything previously seen. Ideally, she would be a companion (I forgot about her too) but I'd be more than happy to see her pop by every now and then. I suggest all the Doctor's partying with/in her for the 50th...

2. DONNA & WILF
I do so miss Donna. And Wilf. Cathy T and Berny C lit up Doctor Who like never before or since. There was a very special moment in the history of the show when these two legends graced the series. Turn Left is still one of my favourite stories in the Whoeuvre and neatly demonstrates the supreme skills of the performers more known for their comedic roles, yet able to prise open a pandorica of emotion. Though some may want to leave their time untouched, I'm greedy - I want more of the twosome. However, The End of Time did rather signal their end so I won't hold my breath...

1. THE MASTER
Speaking of memories, John Simm and his insaniacal (I'm sure that's a word) renegade Time Lord (is there any other kind?) brought Series Three to a tumultuous close. The Simm~a~nator, as no one calls him, didn't fail to entertain and scare (and make teary) on his return for Davey T's final hurrah. Though he's been slightly cagey on a re~appearance, saying he was Tennant's Master, Simm isn't putting the notion out of question. Of course, Moffat got tongues wagging recently when the two made contact on Twitter. Can Blogtor humbly suggest one final story, possibly regenerating into Benedict Cumberbatch?

10 Actresses Who Should Be The Next Companion

Yup, it's already that time of year when boredom has set in and lists have started pouring out. With the news that Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill are leaving Doctor Who, there's gonna be a companion~sized hole in the TARDIS very soon. Below is a list of actresses who Blogtor thinks would assist Matt Smith excellently in Series 7. Feel free to comment below...

10. SOFIE GRABOL
If you're not aware of Gråbøl, she is the jumper (or "sweater") wearing detective Sarah Lund from the Danish series, The Killing. Now, those of you afeared of foreigners shouldn't worry, she can speak English (though the TARDIS would just translate anyway if she chose to Dane all over the place). Lund popped up in Absolutely Fabulous over Christmas so she's not averse to the BBC. Blogtor envisions her as an overworked, but sexy, scientist who lets Doctor Who whisk her away...

9. ANTONIA THOMAS
Despite having appeared in the blummin' awful The Deep, Thomas displayed some fine actoring over three series in E4's Misfits - a show that once rivaled Doctor Who in quality (once). It's been announced that she's not returning for a fourth series (rats, sinking ship, etc..) so the actress is perhaps looking for another gig. And this time, she'll be able to keep her clothes on. Thomas would be ideal as a bored sandwich shop assistant, looking for excitement...

8. LARA PULVER
Without wanting to use words such as "Phwoar", "Corr" and "Won't Someone Please Think Of The Children?", Pulver is perhaps known to some of you for her role as Irene Adler in this year's trouser~tightening Sherlock opener. So her BBC Wales/SteeMo connection has been made. Tick. We can forgive her for starring in Robin Hood (bless) as long she brings the whip to match The Doctor's Sonic. Definitely a Doctor who indulges in her own medicine...

7. OLIVIA HALLINAN
Having made her name in C4's slightly racey Sugar Rush (which also starred Gridlock's Lenora Crichlow, fact fans), Hallinan has darted about with various interesting choices becoming most well~known for the BBC series, Lark Rise to Candleford. The young minx also popped up in one of my favourite Torchwood episodes, Out of Time, so she's not unknown to the world of BBC Wales. Perfect for futuristic farm fillie with a flavour for flight (of a time~traveling variety)...

6. AMARA KARAN
Ok, so she's already appeared in Doctor Who and died (oops, spoiler). Or did she? With SteeMo at the helm death is not the end. Regardless, as Rita in The God Complex she seemed like the perfect companion, with even The Doctor wanting to "hire " her for his TARDIS chum. Karan definitely has charm and skills; reprising Rita would most assuredly be the best bet for her.

5. HOLLY EARL
Another role reprisal I'd lurve to see is Lily from The Doctor, The Widow & the Wardrobe. Earl's scenes with Matt were an absolute delight and, for me, were the best moments from the Christmas Special. Seeing The Doctor with a much younger companion brought a new dimension, a new chemistry to the show; furthering my belief that Matt works at his very best with "kids" (though the actress is actually nineteen).

4. ZOOEY DESCHANEL
Long shot? I think not. With the pull of BBC America, surely a North American companion is but episodes away? Her own series New Girl, though received well, isn't performing as well as it might in the ratings so Deschanel may well be looking for a more permanent gig. We see her as a girl (kooky, obviously), sitting on a platform having missed her train, waiting for a better life...

3. MIRANDA HART
Way to upset Doctor Who fans Blogtor! Having sat in a room with the actress, it is quite clear she is going to be in the show at some point. To be honest, however, I don't think as a companion. Miranda has too much on her plate at the moment to commit to such a schedule, so probably just a guest role. Anyway, I would lurve to see her in the TARDIS whatever the part. Hart would be an excellent novelty shop owner who is bored and looking for love (preferably from a Doctor who has already appeared in the show*)...

2. ANDREA RISEBOROUGH
I've been a fan of the Rise~a~tron, as no one calls her (not even me) ever since I watched BBC Two's Party Animals back in 2007. Oddly enough, it also starred a little guy called Matt Smith (who, at the time, I mentioned could be a future Doctor Who). But it was The Devil's Whore (along with John Simm) that people began to take note of the Rise~a~nator. For me, she was sublime as Margaret Thatcher in the amazing, The Long Walk to Finchley (check it out if you can). She's a bit too "big" for telly now as she's performing in movie after movie but, still, perfect for a regenerated Jenny...

1. KATHERINE PARKINSON
As you can perhaps tell, I lurve funny woman. And Parky is FUNNEEEE! And that voice. Hhmmm, voice. Anyway, enough of my lustful ramblings, the actress has been all over telly from TV's favourite Doctor, Doc Martin on ITV1 to The Old Guys on BBC One to the lamentable Whites on BBC Two and to her crowning glory, The IT Crowd on C4. She's popped up rather wonderfully in the Sherlock Series 2 finale so one wonders if SteeMo has his casting cap on? Her role - cleaner on a Space Station who turns out to be River Song's half sister (on The Doctor's side)...
