10 Liz Two Moments

To celebrate The Queen's Diamond Jubilee, Blogtor has collated the ten best mentions/references/hints of her Madgeness* in Doctor Who - check 'em out below and raise a glass to Queen Elizabeth II! Apparently, she and her crew are big fans of the show, so I hope they enjoy this tribute.

10. Mawdryn Undead

OK, I admit it, this one is a bit tenuous (but I had to make the list up to ten somehow), but what better way to celebrate The Queen's Silver Jubilee than to do a story about it almost 6 years later. Yup, in those days, Doctor Who did things a tad differently. Her Majesty isn't directly mentioned but The Doctor knows the date precisely (that's June 7, 1977, fact fans), showing off his Queenie knowledge aptly. And just check out that bunting and tight t~shirts!

9. Tooth & Claw

Slightly less tenuous (slightly) is this 2006 ep, which featured one of her predecessors, Queen Victoria, exploring the notion of "The Royal Disease" (insert "I didn't know taking everyone's money and doing nothing was a disease" gag here). Rose asks The Doctor, "So the Royal Family are werewolves?" after he suggests that the blood sport~lovin' nature of the Royal DNA may raise its head in the early 21st Century...

8. The End of Time [Part 1]
OK, now were' getting somewhere. Lizzie W didn't actually make an appearance in Davey T's swansong but she almost did (her "name" is visible!). And everyone's favourite old person Wilf even starting saluting her only to be replaced by, dun~dun~dunnn, Mumtor Who**! Of course, Queeny would have got her bonce transformed into that of John Simm but mere hours later. Which makes me wonder, did the stamps change...?

7. Turn Left

Again, a bit of an oblique, not to mention bleak, reference for the 2008 Doctor~lite episode (and one of my all time favourite stories, I should add) but I think we can assume that, as the Titanic crashed into Buckingham Palace, the head of the Windsors was involved in this parallel conclusion to Voyage of the Dammed. Killing The Royal Family may have seemed like a sequel to the film Titanic for poor Donna Noble, but RTD showed a rather macabre side to his normal Monarch~lurvin' stance.

6. The Beast Below

Not to be outdone by the former showrunner, Steven "SteeMo" Moffat produces his own Queen with a blink and you'll miss it reference (if ears can blink) to our current Monarch. Liz Ten reveals that The Doctor had "tea and scones" with our Betty. We don't know when in her life and we don't even know what incarnation of everyone's favourite Gallifreyan took the time to perform such a decadent act. Mind you, "tea and scones" does sound like a rather filthy euphemism... #durtyboy

5. The Christmas Invasion

"It's hardly the Queen's Speech, I'm afraid that's been cancelled..... Did we ask about the Royal Family? Oh, they're on the roof." Best. Queen gag. Ever.

4. Planet of the Dead

This one came right out of left~field. After effing up a bus, flirting outrageously with a "Lady", chumming it up with some Tritovore and battling a swarm of metal exoskeleton stingray aliens (what the hell were they called??) on San Helios, The Doctor reveals his relationship with Her Queeny~ness. "Oh, she doesn't mind," he proudly boasts on UNIT returning the TARDIS after being found in the grounds of Buckingham Palace. Show~off.

3. The Idiot's Lantern

If it wasn't for the old Queen, this story wouldn't even exist (please keep the sarky remarks to yourself, please). According to one of the ladies watching the Coronation, Liz "Makes you forget all your troubles." Interesting, I was not aware of that. The Doctor's ironic utterance of "God save the Queen, eh?" was intriguing, however. Not sure who he was doubting - the former or the latter. Or maybe he was giving a nod to The Sex Pistols?

2. Silver Nemesis

An actual sighting! This time Lizzy takes the dogs for a walk around Windsor Castle whilst The Seventh Doctor and Ace goof around in search for... hold on. Just why were they are? Oh yeah.*** Anyway, on first sighting, his confused, "I can't place that woman for the life of me!" turns to "She's just the woman we need!" as he feels the need for armed forces to overthrow the Cybermen, Lady Peinforte and some Neo~Nazis (I think that's what they were).

1. Voyage of the Damned

Another sighting! AND she gets some dialogue! But before that we get some discussion of Highnessnessness. Wilf warmly responds, "Gawd bless her" (saluting, again; or for the first time, rather) in admiration of The Queen's decision to remain in residence at Buckingham Palace over the festive period despite all the beastly goings~on in London over the past few Christmases. The Doctor incorrectly chips in, "Her Majesty has got it right, as far as I know." (Mind you, his mind was probably a bit frazzled as he had Kylie on his arm.)

QE2's decision to show the people of the world that there was "nothing to fear" of extra~terrestrial intelligence was almost a bad move. Almost. Thankfully The Doc calls in a "Security code 771" (I wonder what the first 770 were?) from the Titanic to the palace - cue corgis, the Royal slippers and rollers. But, there's more. We even hear from Her Madgeness as she shows her appreciation for the Time Lord, "Thank you Doctor, thank you. Happy Christmas." What a classy gal.

CBBC children's show Blue Peter today included the winning entry for this year's Script To Screen competition run by the BBC. Starring Matt Smith as the Doctor and Karen Gillan as Amelia Pond, the Olympics-inspired story was filmed at BBC Wales Roath Lock studios in Cardiff and was created by three talented pupils from Ashdene Primary School in Wilmslow.

The three-minute winning script was chosen by Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer of Doctor Who, Katy Jones BBC Learning executive producer and Caroline Skinner, executive producer of Doctor Who. Skinner praised the quality of the scripts, saying: “We loved reading all of the scripts from schools across the UK and the standard of entries was truly outstanding. It was a difficult, but a tremendously fun task to choose a winner and it was just brilliant to see so many children being creative in developing an adventure for the Doctor. We hope all fans enjoy this special one-off mini episode!”

The BBC have released more promotional pictures of actress Billie Piper, who older readers may remember played Rose Tyler, in the upcoming drama True Love - click on the images included for bigger versions. The five~part series also stars former Doctor Who David Tennant star in its first episode (see promo pics HERE) whilst Billie's story is the third. True Love starts June 18 and will air nightly on BBC One.

BBC Books have announced the forthcoming publication of Doctor Who: The Wheel of Ice by Stephen Baxter, an all-new Doctor Who adventure starring The Second Doctor, as played by Patrick Troughton, with his companions Jamie and Zoe. Synopsis below:

The Wheel has been plagued by problems. Maybe it's just gremlins, just bad luck. But what's the truth of the children's stories of 'Blue Dolls' glimpsed aboard the gigantic facility? And why won't the children go down the warren-like mines? And then sixteen-year-old Phee Laws, surfing Saturn's rings, saves an enigmatic blue box from destruction. Aboard the Wheel, The Doctor, Jamie and Zoe find a critical situation - and three strangers who have just turned up out of nowhere look like prime candidates to be accused of sabotage ...

Stephen Baxter is recognised as one of the world's foremost science fiction writers. Since 1987, he has published over forty books, mostly science fiction novels, and over a hundred short stories. He is also collaborating with Discworld author Terry Pratchett on a series of science-fiction novels.

Tennant & Piper in True Love

The BBC have released some promotional pictures of former Doctor Who David Tennant and companion Billie Piper from an upcoming BBC drama, True Love - click on the images below for bigger versions. This five-part series will be "stripped" across the week (Monday to Friday), starting June 18 on BBC One with Tennant's episode (Piper's is the third). Actor David Morrissey (The Next Doctor) is also set to star in an installment.

True Love explores five powerful and overlapping love stories set in the same town. Each story looks at a different relationship and explores a different dilemma or situation. When it comes to love and relationships, there is never an easy "right answer" – telling the truth is complicated, and the conflict of desire and responsibility can be explosive. Pictured below with David Tennant is actress, Vicky McClure.

As revealed HERE, June sees the Region 1 DVD re~releases of The Seeds of Death and Resurrection of the Daleks in North America. Included below is the art work and details for these Special Edition 2~disc sets which are both released on June 12 (priced $34.98 in the US and $43.98 in Canada). These editions were released in the UK as part of the Revisitations 2 Box Set. Click on the covers for bigger versions.

The Seeds of Death: Special Edition

By the late 21st century, mankind has become totally dependent on T-Mat to transport people, food and medicines around the world. When the system breaks down, Earth is soon crippled by global shortages. Traveling to the relay station on the moon, the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton) and his companions discover the horrific truth: the Ice Warriors have hijacked T-Mat, and intend to claim the planet for themselves. Can the Doctor defeat the Martians before Earth is smothered in deadly fungus, and the human race is condemned to extinction?

This digitally re-mastered edition includes audio commentary with actors Frazer Hines and Wendy Padbury, director Michael Ferguson and script editor Terrance Dicks; Lords of the Red Planet history of the Ice Warriors featurette; Sssowing the Ssseedsss behind the scenes featurette; as well as many other bonus features.

Resurrection of the Daleks: Special Edition

The TARDIS is dragged down a time corridor, forcing the Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison), Tegan (Janet Fielding) and Turlough (Mark Strickson) to materialize in a disused part of London in 1984. The corridor links Earth with a battle cruiser in the future that contains the Doctor’s oldest enemy – the Daleks. Having lost the war with the Movellans, only one person can now help the evil race. With shocking consequences for the Doctor, it is time for the Daleks to resurrect their creator Davros.

This digitally re-mastered edition includes audio commentary with actor Terry Molloy, writer Eric Saward and visual effects designer Peter Wragg; additional audio commentary with actors Peter Davison, Janet Fielding and director Matthew Robinson; alternate 4-part version of the story; Come In Number Five retrospective of the Fifth Doctor presented by David Tennant; as well as many other bonus features.

BBC DVD have announced details of The Sarah Jane Adventures The Fifth Season DVD in North America. This single disc has a street date of June 12 and is priced $19.98 in the US and $24.98 in Canada. Details below:

Created and produced by award-winning writer Russell T Davies, the final season of the exciting action-adventure children’s series, The Sarah Jane Adventures, follows the exploits of school friends Luke, Clyde and Rani, who team up with Sarah Jane Smith, investigative journalist and former companion to The Doctor, to examine strange and mysterious events.

Season Five finds Sky, the Starchild who was given to Sarah Jane to look after, settling into Sarah Jane’s home on Bannerman Road as she discovers her own telekinetic powers. Fish rain from the skies, Clyde is cursed by an ancient god, and a mysterious new computer leads the gang to another run-in with aliens. The final season continues the fast and funny recipe of action, drama and special effects, even as it features the final performances of Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith.

Bonus features include: Goodbye Bannerman Road – Remembering Elisabeth Sladen, a tribute to Elisabeth Sladen with contributions from those who worked closely with her, including the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith.
