Interestingly, no special software is required to exploit this vulnerability. If an attacker knows the text that exploits the vulnerability, she can cause serious damage to your phone. After the attack, the phone does not accept SMS/MMS anymore and the only solution is a hard-reset or in the worst case rewriting the firmware.
Via SecuObs.com

JoikuSpot - a Killer App For your E90

WiFi has become so widespread that we take it for granted. Laptop users (and not only) cannot imagine life without WiFi. After all it gives us so much freedom and frees us from those nasty network cables.

Now imagine that you could turn your Symbian S60 based smartphone into a WiFi Hot Spot. That is exactly what JoikuSpot does.

When I first heard about the application, I didn't really pay much attention to it. Both of my two laptops have built in Bluetooth radio and thus I can use them "easily" with my Nokia E90 Communicator. That is the main reason why most of the users don't consider JoikuSpot an interesting and useful application.

If you have used a laptop coupled with your S60 smartphone to access the Internet via Bluetooth then you may know that this model is not the most reliable. First off, you need to setup the Bluetooth modem, then use it as a dial-up connection. If a connection is dropped, sometimes it is difficult to re-connect and so on. That's when JoikuSpot comes in handy. It allows you to connect your laptop to the Internet in a more practical and familiar way, i.e. the same way that you use it at your workplace, home, etc.

Another considerable advantage that JoikuSpot has over Bluetooth is the connection range. While phones with WiFi radio cannot deliver the same range that a WiFi router can, the range achieved with JoikuSpot will be longer than that achieved with Bluetooth.

JoikuSpot comes in two flavors, light edition (which is free) and premium edition. The light version supports HTTP protocol only and can be used for web browsing only. However, the Premium version delivers full Internet connectivity. The premium version also supports multiple clients. Joiku has a promo and gives a 40% discount. I took advantage of this offer and got it for 15 Euros. Believe me, the application is really worth that price and once you start using it for connecting to the Internet, you will never revert back to Bluetooth anymore.

So what are you waiting for? Download this wonderful application right now.

Google Maps 2.2 on Nokia E90 Communicator

When it comes to software, I really hate having two applications if they do the same thing. However, with the Google Maps and Nokia Maps that's not the case.

While the applications are somewhat different, they serve the same purpose. Yet, I have them both and more importantly use both of them.

Google has recently released a new 2.2. version of the Google Maps for S60. In this release you will see such cool features as public transport timetables in 60 cities around the world, star ratings for business along with other user-generated content. The overall search speed has increased as well.

As always, you can get the most recent version from www.google.com/gmm.

Nokia Accounts Goes Live... sort of

While in my opinion, the "famous" Passport from Microsoft is a big failure, unified login is a pretty valid idea within a single company context. We all know that it is possible to login to all Google services with a unified login.

It looks like that Nokia has taken the same path. While there are not many services using Nokia Accounts at the moment, Nokia Chat is already there. So will be Ovi and a number of other Nokia's online services.

If you have not created your Nokia account so far, it's a good time to get one here: https://account.nokia.com/acct/register

E90 Communicator: Black & Sexy

However, when I saw it in a shop window, I immediately fell in love with this phone.

Yesterday I came across a gallery of a black E90 at the Symbian world blog and it looks really awesome.
Don't forget to check out the gallery when you get a chance.

Freeware FTP Client for Nokia E90 Communicator

As a matter of fact, FTP is the fastest and easiest way to upload files to a server. It can be used to exchange files between your computer and your mobile device. Well you know, FTP can be used in all possible ways.

I use FTP for professional purposes and having it on my Nokia E90 Communicator is a must. I already have a number of commercial applications on my Nokia E90 Communicator and you know these applications together can make pretty good money. 20 dollars there, 10 dollars here accrue pretty fast. So, if a freeware software does a decent job, I always (who would not) go for it.

Luckily there is a very good FTP client for all Symbian S60 devices from SIC! Software. The FTP client works pretty well on E90 on the internal screen as well. The software is extremely easy to use, is pretty fast and has demonstrated a decent speeds both in a WLAN/DSL and 3G GRPS networks.

You can download the application from Symbian-Freeware.com.

HSDPA on Nokia E90

Recently one of the cellular operators in my area has started support for HSDPA.

As you may be aware, HSDPA stands for a High-Speed Downlink Packet Access and it is a third generation (aka 3G) mobile telephony communications protocol in the High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) family. It is used in Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) networks and has high data transfer speeds. Maximum speed is limited to 14.4 MBit seconds, 3.6 MBit per second being the most widespread speed.

The good news is that Nokia E90 Communicator, as you would expect from a device of this class, supports HSDPA.

Immediately after I heard the news about HSDPA being introduced in my place, I rushed and got a subscription to test the speeds.

I must say the speed was impressive. The only time I get the same web page rendering and file download with my Nokia E90 Communicator is when I use it in a WLAN. I must note that my operator has started offering unlimited data plan at a fixed monthly fee. This opens practically unlimited horizons in using E90 anywhere, anytime. Think VoIP :)

If your operator does not support HSDPA while a competing does, I highly recommend that you consider switching even if your current operator supports 3G.

Nokia E90 Communicator with 2GB Memory

The press release states that Consolidated Gulf Co. (CGC), the biggest retailer of mobile phones as well as the largest Telecom and IT solution provider in Qatar, has unveiled an upgraded Nokia E90 Communicator with 2GB memory.

I'm not really sure if this version is officially released by Nokia or is a custom upgrade made by CGC. Anyway, it's really interesting to see the Nokia E90 Communicator with 2GB of internal memory.

You can view the full press release here: http://www.arabianbusiness.com/press_releases/detail/19771

Nokia E90 Firmware Update is Here

The latest firmware is v210.34.75 and offers a number of very interesting and useful fixes and features.

Probably the most important update is addition of Flash Lite 3 with Flash video support. This means watching YouTube videos directly. So far, so cool.

New 'Set up Internet telephony' shortcut on standby screen.

Quickoffice now comes version 4.1.27.5. There are a number of useful improvements and fixes.

It seems that an overall device speed and stability has been improved as well. At least this is noticeable.

These are what AAS reports so far. I am at the moment downloading the recent version of the software updater, which unfortunately does not support Vista.

I will be backing up my device tomorrow and installing the new firmware.

Unfortunately, some people especially with AZERTY keyboards say that they had problems. It appeared around my place a while ago and I liked it immediately.

As you can see from the picture, the headset features a dog-tag design. Regarding the design, many reviews on the Internet say that "You're either going to love it or hate it, there's really no middle ground on this one.". Personally I loved it. I like everything that is not standard, boring and this headset is one of such things.

The BT3030 comes with a metal chain lanyard to wear the device around your neck and to me this is the way to wear the device. Alternatively, you can use the clothes clip, which is found in the box.

The headset is covered with metal and looks really cool. According to the manufacturer, the device is not fully waterproof but can easily survive a rain for example or a splash of water. Indeed, the headset looks really cool.

The front side features a number of buttons to control the playback, volume. A button to answer and reject phone calls is present as well.

I must say that the designers of this device have given a good thought to usability. The buttons are backlit with strong blue color, so it's really easy to use the device in a complete darkness.

Also, the headset gives different signals with lights. For example, the light changes according to the battery level. So you know when it's time to charge the headset. You can charge the headset either with the adaptor that comes in the box or with your PC. Yes, I love when a device has a support for charging via PC. As you may have guessed, the device has a mini USB port.

Unfortunately, I was not able to control the Nokia E90 Communicator's music player with this headset. I tried using LCG Jukebox and CorePlayer but still no success. As far as I know, Nokia E90 Communicator does support AVRCP - a Bluetooth profile that allows controlling of media device.

Receiving and rejecting calls worked just as advertised. As soon as the phone rang, the music stopped. Just a couple of seconds after you finish the conversation and the music resumes.

Another good thing about this headset is that you can use standard 3.5mm headphones with it. The one that comes in the box is really good.

The overall sound quality is very good, above average I would say. The bottom line is that this is a really cool tiny gadget and I wish I could solve this problem with controlling the music.

Skype on Nokia E90 Communicator

Recently Skype has released a beta version of an official Skype client for Java phones. The application is available for different mobile phones from Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola and Samsung. By the way, Nick has already written about using Skype on Sony Ericsson in his SE Blog. So if you happen to be a Sony Ericsson user, make sure to check out his post.

When you go to the download section, you won't see Nokia E90 listed there. However, let's not forget that any application that can run on say Nokia N95, can be used on E90 Communicator as well. So, I gave it a try and it worked fine.

There is one caveat though and it is associated with using the internal QWERTY keyboard. In the chatting window you cannot directly type text with the internal QWERTY keyboard. Rather, it opens in a new Java windows. This is a bit frustrating but in all other aspects the software works fine.

I have tried all applications for using with Skype. I had purchased IM For Skype from Shapeservices and have been using it for a couple of months and I must say the application works fine. Also, the application from Shapeservices is a native Symbian application, which is a big plus. However, having an application from Skype is a totally different thing. So, I highly recommend to download the N95 version and use it on your E90 Communicator.

I will be making some screen-shots on my E90 and will do a follow-up post shortly.

Please follow this link to download the application: http://www.skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/mobile/

Turn Your Communicator into a Webcam

My old Sony Vaio had one and I was pretty happy with it. However, I have recently changed to a more powerful HP 8710w mobile workstation laptop. Unfortunately, this laptop does not have a built-in webcam.

I use the webcam occasionally and carrying a separate webcam is not very practical. Because of this, I decided to find a solution that would turn my mobile phone into a webcam. Luckily, there are at least two solutions that will get the job done. The first one is Mobiola Webcam and the other is WWIGO. The former is a commercial application and the later is a free application (WWIGO is at a beta stage for now, but works just fine).

Those applications install a webcam driver in Windows and as a result you can use both solutions in instant messaging software like Skype, MSN or Yahoo Messenger.

If you are up to spending $20 on this type of software, you may wish to go for Mobiola Webcam. If you'd rather use a freeware product, then WWIGO is the way to go.

New Nokia E90 Firmware or An April Fool?

Further, according to the web site, the update is available for non-branded devices only.

Mine is non-branded E90 and when I ran the NSU, it just said that my firmware was up-to-date. I did update to 7.40.1.2 just two days ago and I thought I already had this new firmware but had not noticed it. But oops, when I ran the Flash player it's the same old 2.0.

Updates speculated by AAS are very nice and interesting. It seems that this is just a beta version of the update and not a public release. Of course, Nokia specializes in software related to mobile phones and the communication industry.

It is a common practice for large companies to maintain special labs. Microsoft has such a lab, and the Google Lab is famous for producing innovative applications and services. The software produced by such labs usually comes as a beta version. A beta version means that the software has passed internal testing and is now ready to be released outside the organization that develops the software. Applications at this stage are very close to what they will be when finally released. However, beta level software can contain some known issues, as well as other unknown bugs. Usually, it's not dangerous to use beta applications.

Unfortunately, many of those applications always stay at a beta stage until they are finally discontinued. However, recently, with the advent of the Web the time span for betas has increased considerably. A clear example is the Google Mail.

Let's get back to Nokia's Beta Labs. They already offer such innovative applications as a web server for your mobile phone, Nokia Maps 2.0, Nokia PC Phone, Nokia Audiobooks and many more. The web site is organized conveniently. You can quickly see if a particular application is compatible with your device and download the application.

So, what are you waiting for? Check out the Nokia Beta Labs at http://www.nokia.com/betalabs.

8 GB SDHC Cards in Nokia E90 Communicator

Since 1998 he has been releasing diamond-encrusted mobile phones. As for prices, they usually start from 30 grands. The 1.3 million dollar diamond phone was Mr. Aloisson's craft as well.

Can you guess what is Mr. Aloisson's one of the latest works? Yes, you guessed correctly. It is Nokia E90 Communicator made of solid 18 carat white gold, encrusted with a total of 408 perfectly handset diamonds at whopping 9.86 cts weight.

Hmm, price price price. I don't think I shall be getting this baby anytime soon and will have to stay satisfied with my regular E90. But if you are interested, the device costs 52,000 euros and you can find it here. If you pay this much, I don't think it shall be a problem for you to pay the taxes as the price is net, excluding VAT and other applicable taxes.

Official Carrying Case for Nokia E90 Communicator

The device is great and it is one of the most lovely gadgets that I've ever owned.

However, there had been only one discomfort associated with owning E90. No, no. Mine has not experienced any mic or speaker trouble and there is no scratch on the screen left by the keyboard. The discomfort that I've just mentioned was associated with no carrying case availability. But this had been a problem. Luckily, Nokia has released a Carrying Case CP-285, specially designed for Nokia E90 Communicator.

The CP-285 Carrying Case is made from high quality polyurethane and helps protect your Communicator while giving you access to its buttons, ports, and speakers.

The accessory has been released in Europe. Unfortunately, I have no information on its availability in the USA. I've noticed some folks asking on the expansys.com forums when the accessory would be available, with no response yet.

Nokia E90 Successor Confirmed. It looks like that Nokia will be releasing the new E90 in black color. The technical specifications remain practically the same. The changes are mainly in the build area and of course fixing some of the problems present in the current model. It can be said that the keyboard of the modified E90 is different.

While my device's screen has not suffered from scratches caused by the keyboard, many users have reported this problem. Also, the speaker and microphone of E90 had many faults. Mine works fine, but many users have been complaining on noise during calls. It is not known whether this issue is fixed or not in the modified version. Most likely Nokia has fixed it.

Source: http://www.symbian-freak.com/news/008/02/nokia_e90_successor_confirmed.htm

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Blogvasion/NokiaE90Communicator/~3/_Za64uARXNY/nokia-e90-successor-confirmed-changes.html" title="Nokia E90 Successor Confirmed.

Configuring VoIP on Nokia phones can be a real nightmare. Moreover, some VoIP services work just fine, with some you may get a partly working solution (i.e. one-way audio), yet with others you can't even register with the service. Registration Failed is a painfully known message for Nokia phone users.

Occasionally, on various forums, you can see messages posted by disappointed users and some posts are really rude. But I can understand these people. When you pay a grand for a phone and you can't even register with a service provider, that is not good. For some people, support of VoIP becomes a key feature when making decision which phone to buy. For example, when I first got Nokia E61, I must admit, I bought it because I hoped to use it as a VoIP phone. Nokia E90 Communicator is a great device and it is very pity when you are not able to use it with your VoIP services provider.

But I have good news! This post will help you to get ANY VoIP service working on your Nokia S60 phone. No kidding. Just read carefully and then follow the instructions and let the magic happen.

I mainly use two VoIP services: Stanaphone and SipGate. I was able to get SipGate working both on E61 and on E90 right away without any problems. However, no matter what I did, I could not get Stanaphone working. I created accounts with almost every VoIP provider on the Internet from GizmoProject to Voxalot to PBXES.org to test and troubleshoot this problem.

If you configure SIP Settings in your phone according to the provider's details, most of the services simply DON'T WORK! Frustrated users even say that the VoIP feature in Nokia phones is a beta product. However, that is not true. After you get your VoIP service working on your Nokia, it will work smoothly and your Nokia phone will turn into a truly Internet Phone.

What Causes Registration Failures?

Problem Number One - Incorrect REALM Value

When configuring SIP settings, specifying correct REALM is very important. If the REALM used by the service provider is different from what you specify in SIP Settings, registration will fail for sure. With Windows based softphones this is not a problem and because of this, the service providers sometimes may not even publish the REALM or publish incorrectly on their sites. For example, look at the settings that Stanaphone provides on the screen shot below.

As you can see, according to their site, you must specify sip.stanaphone.com as a Domain/Realm or Proxy Server value. Unfortunately, if you specify sip.stanaphone.com in the Realm field in your S60 phone, it won't work. Correct realm is sip.stanaphone.com.

I have tried stanaphone.com and many other values as well. For example, sometimes just "asterisk" works. Why? Because it is a default REALM value in Asterisk - a popular VOIP software that many VoIP providers use. But nothing worked.

The problem is that there are quite many SIP settings and there are so many possible combinations of different settings (like specifying TCP instead of UDP, switching the Security setting on or off, etc) that you cannot get it working by chance.

So, how did I manage to find out a correct realm for Stanaphone? It was not too difficult. I have been able to successfully use the service with X-Lite. So, I switched logging on and then looked up the log file. As you can see on the screen shot below (it's a part of the log), the correct realm is just stanaphone.com.

Problem Number Two - STUN

The problem with VoIP in Nokia phones is associated with how the phone used STUN. As you are well aware, you cannot specify a STUN server in the SIP Settings and that is the problem.

As far as I know, earlier version of the VoIP part in Nokia did not use STUN at all and because of that you could not use the VoIP-enabled Nokia phones with many providers. However, in the latest models STUN is incorporated, but the problem is how the phones uses the STUN server info.

One way that is used in softphones is to make a DNS lookup and that's how Windows softphones do and that is in my opinion how Nokia phones work. As you can see from another part of the log, the default STUN server setting did not work. Now this makes clear why Nokia phones work with some VoIP providers and don't work with others. If the STUN server coincides with the one that Nokia phones try to use, the service works.

Logically, a solution to this problem would be to be able to specify correct setting for STUN. However, as I have already mentioned you cannot configure STUN setting from the SIP Settings section. But, there is a tiny but extremely useful application from Nokia that allows you to change some very internal SIP settings. That is the application that does the magic. So, download it quickly from here http://sw.nokia.com/id/d2d27e6c-bd52-4534-9aa6-19e606b80709/SIP_VoIP_Settings_v1_0_en.zip and install on your phone.

In order to change the STUN settings, you must first create the SIP Settings. Stanaphone settings are shown below:

After you have created the SIP Settings, launch the application. The first screen presents you with 2 choices: VoIP Services and NAT Firewall Settings. Choose NAT Firewall Settings.

Then you will see two choices again: Domain Parameters and IAP parameters. Choose the first.

You should see your VoIP profile there. Choose it.

Finally, you can specify the STUN server there. If you don't know STUN server for your VoIP provider, you can specify this: stunserver.org. This is a publicly available free STUN server. You must also specify the default 3478 port.

On the final screen shot you can see that the Stanaphone profile got registered successfully.

Nokia E90 vs Nokia N810

Yes, true it has many problems but those problems are of more technical nature. Most of the problems are associated with factory defects like the mic and speaker problem and keyboard failure. Otherwise, the device is almost fully featured.

What I can wish for the successor is to have even higher resolution of the internal screen. Well, I would not mind a 1024x400 or 1024x600 resolution. Also, making the internal screen touch-sensitive would be great. Finally, throwing in about 8 GB of memory would be nice. And of course eliminating all of the technical and factory defects.

A Really Dumb Review of Nokia E90

Some provide more details, some less. There a couple of extremely comprehensive and deep ones.

E90 isn't the newest and latest device, yet new reviews appear from time to time.

Today I came across one "interesting" review. Well, you can hardly call this a review.

If you are a proud owner of E90, have your say and leave your comment: http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/01/review-nokia-e9.html?cid=98335080

Sony Ericsson P1i vs. Nokia E90 Communicator

Today I came across an interesting question on CNET Asia. Sachet Batra is asking which device is better for business and Internet use: SE P1 or Nokia E90 Communicator.

I had owned many different smartphones and among them were Symbian OS based and Windows Mobile based devices. However, I have finally come to E90 and I don't think to change this device anywhere soon.

When choosing a smartphone, the most important moment is to evaluate what you want it for. Windows Mobile devices are really cool and I really love them but when it comes to web browsing the lack of the screen size is a big limitation. The best screen you can find for WinMob devices is a VGA screen, which is of course better than a QVGA screen but still not enough for comfortable browsing.

What I love about E90 is the resolution of the internal screen. Finally, this is a device that almost replaces a laptop for browsing. After I bought E90, I noticed that I carry my laptop less frequently. Sometimes I would take my laptop only for browsing or writing a blog post. Many blog posts I have written on E90 and for browsing it is the best device. Period.

While Communicator's ergonomics is great to operate the device sans touchscreen, the presence of the later would a tremendous plus.

I've never owned P1, but recently I bought it as a birthday gift for Nick, who is a big fan of SonyEricsson, and I think P1 is a really cool device. Had not I been able to buy E90, I would purchase P1 for sure. Again, on my list P1 is the second device.

Returning to the question posted on CNET. Damian Koh, a Senior Writer, has posted a very correct and useful answer. I highly recommend you to read it if you are still evaluating which device to buy: P1 or E90. You can read the question and the answer here: http://asia.cnet.com/digitalliving/ask/0,3800004928,62036503,00.htm?

Fake E90 Looks Pretty Decent, But...

A while ago great cloners tried their cloning force at faking Nokia E90 Communicator.

It must be admitted that the clone looks pretty decent, especially outside where it almost fully resembles the original device. However, as we move inside, things start to be different. Totally different keyboard, smaller screen, big stereo speakers speak loudly that the cloned device is very far from the original.

The cloned device is equipped with a 1.3 MP camera, had quad-band radio with EDGE and microSD expansion slot.

The pre-installed software has some office document support and more interestingly has Nintendo emulator. Well, I think inclusion of the later was pretty wise since once you open the device, it does look like a gaming device, pretty close to Nintendo DS + QWERTY keyboard.

It must be admitted that the real device is nicer than it looks on the photos. The price of the device is about US $300. So, it makes a pretty good alternative for wanna-be E90 owners.
