Bloody Hypocrites!

Sydney artist, Rev Mayers, (A.K.A. Dr.Rev) whose blood paintings have attracted world wide recognition and acclaim is this week dealing with an unexplained, and highly hypocritical decision from the NSW Health Department.

Rev had been booked to show off his amazing talent in a live demonstration at the Sydney Tattoo and Body Art festival being held at Homebush on 11th-12th-13th of March this year (a demonstration he showcased at the Melbourne Rites of Passage tattoo festival earlier this month) until he received news from the festival’s organizers that his appearance had been refused by the Auburn Council due to health regulations.

As an accomplished tattoo artist himself, Rev is aware of the health risks associated with working with blood, however, unlike the blood that will be spilled and wiped up and flowing in the many tattoo booths and scarification stalls available to the public at the festival, Rev’s blood is not only 100% tested and risk free, it is also completely dead and unable to cause any damage to anyone by the time he uses it to create his paintings. Rev not only proved this fact by supplying a sample of this blood to NSW health, but they asked for another sample because the blood was so decomposed that no information could be recorded from it. So how is this a health risk? What Dr Rev does, is ground breaking, so how can there be policy prohibiting him from performing, there has been no testing of any kind to prove any airborne risk and Rev takes every precaution to protect the public by sealing off his booth with caution tape and lining all surfaces with plastic. In fact Rev goes above and beyond the regulation set forth by NSW health for tattooists. Clearly this is a blatant case of discrimination against an unique and unusual artist who’s choice of medium simply has certain people in the health department afraid.

The festival organisers have vowed to follow up on this decision and get Rev re-added to the program, and there is also a lot of public support from his fans to try and get this decision over-turned with many punters claiming they will no longer attend the festival if Rev is not allowed to paint. blood but mine and I NEVER use animal blood. I believe that by only
using my blood as a medium to paint I am able share myself and be

The NSW Health Department believes that there are health concerns with me painting at the show. Pathetic, the Melbourne and Gold Coast Tattoo Exhibitions that I attended had no problem with it. In saying that its not the Sydney show that has a problem with me painting its only the Health Department. The Sydney Show has shown its support for my paintings and we are working together to get this decision changed. I have contacted Ric Seddin the PR of the Sydney Show and he is assisting in lodging a complaint to the anti discrimination board.

Health Concerns are they for real, there are higher health concerns when tattooing than there is with me painting in my own blood. Originally the Health Department requested I submit a blood test sample, to which I complied, and the blood results returned with absolutely no health concerns! That was their only requirement in the beginning and now they are refusing to comment, answer my calls or return my emails. Who ever is responsible for this decision is a joke and a coward.

Check out my blood art booth where i created many paintings for charity that weekend!

My weekend was completely full on getting everything ready for the show and it wasn’t made any easier after slicing my arm a few days before. Off to the hospital I went to be stitched up by the doctors, obviously not before taking advantage of collecting some blood for future paintings. I don’t make a habit of it but why not collect some blood why its there. It’s defiantly a Occupational Health and Safety Issue (some think….”as if it isn’t already” hahaha).

Day one for me consisted of an owl portrait which had most people amazed!

The Owl was followed by a collaboration painting between myself and Jeff Gogue, a reall honor to collaborate with an awesome artist like Jeff.

That painting and another one of mine were auctioned along with a signed book and proceeds were donated to the Sea Shepherds charity to protect ocean creatures.

I also painted a wold portrait also very popular with the crowd.

It was a huge weekend, of interviews autographs and photos, one of my best shows yet. I know some of you traveled a long way just to meet me in person, so for that i say thanks. It means a lot and makes me proud to know I can affect the lives of some of you to that extent.

If you thought the Melbourne show was good wait till you see what I have in store for Sydney in March. It will blow you away!
