“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Lar Park Lincoln,” Actors Audition Studios, which Lincoln founded, shared on Facebook. “Over her 45-year career, Lar left an unforgettable mark on Hollywood through her dynamic performances and dedication to mentoring aspiring actors.”

Lincoln is best known for squaring off against Jason Voorhees as telekinetic final girl Tina Sheppard in The New Blood.

She reprised the role in the 2021 fan film Rose Blood. She also appeared in House II: The Second Story, 13 Fanboy, Sky Sharks, and an episode of “Freddy’s Nightmares.”

Lincoln’s TV credits include a recurring part on “Knots Landing” and guest starring spots on “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Murder, She Wrote.”

The Dallas-based entrepreneur published a book about a career in the entertainment industry, Get Started, Not Scammed, in 2008

Lincoln’s family requests privacy during this time and is grateful for the outpouring of love. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation or Entertainment Community Fund.

Thorns is said to be “ripe with physical makeup effects and plenty of gore,” and you can watch the trailer below for a taste. It was debuted exclusively over on Dread Central earlier today.

Dread also reveals that Thorns will be coming to VOD on May 6 from Vantage Media.

In Thorns, “An ex-priest working for NASA is sent to investigate a remote observatory that went silent after receiving a mysterious radio signal from deep space. Upon arrival, he discovers the signal has opened a portal unleashing a thorned monster. The former priest must now summon his lost faith to stop the signal from jumpstarting the end of the world.”

“Thorns is meant as a visceral experience,” the director adds.

After the reunion, they continue the night at an Airbnb for one last sleepover, but the celebration quickly turns into a nightmare. A masked killer begins hunting them down one by one, seeking revenge for the sins of their past.

Gregory W. Brock directs from a script he co-wrote with Austin J. Rutherford.

It’s no secret that the brand new Blade movie has been bumped all over the release calendar the last several years, and it’s currently without a date at all after getting pulled from its most recent theatrical release date of November 7, 2025. Not helping is that the movie is without a director at the moment, with Yann Demange (“Lovecraft Country”) departing the project in the wake of Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli) exiting the film back in 2022.

Mahershala Ali was attached to play the title character, with Delroy Lindo (Sinners) also on board. But Lindo revealed to Entertainment Weekly earlier this month that the project “went off the rails,” with the actor at this time no longer attached to star alongside Ali.

Another talent that had been attached to Marvel’s Blade? Musician and filmmaker Flying Lotus (Ash), who revealed on Twitter earlier today that he had been set to do the film’s music.

Flying Lotus, whose own feature debut Ash was just released on Digital at home, tweets, “I guess we are so far from it even being a possibility now but. Yeah I was signed on to write music for the new BLADE movie before it fell thru. Maybe it’ll come around again but I doubt it.”

“Would have been fun tho,” the Grammy winner added in his tweet.

Jamie Lee Curtis will executive produce the project through her company Comet Pictures’ first-look deal with the studio, along with Jason Blum and Chris Dickie for Blumhouse and Pessl.

The search is underway for a screenwriter to adapt the YA psychological thriller, which was published in November by Random House. Here’s the book’s synopsis:

What would you kill for? When an ad for an internship with the Louisiana Veda Foundation poses this question, seemingly every high school student in the country rushes to apply.

Arcadia “Dia” Gannon has been obsessed with Louisiana Veda, the late game designer whose obsessive creations have attained a cultlike status, ever since she and her mom played Disappearing Act—but Dia has never won anything in her life. So she’s shocked when she’s chosen as an intern, along with six other teenagers from around the world.

Little is known about Louisiana Veda. Her game-making empire, Darkly, was renowned for its ingenious, terrifying toys and games, rife with hidden symbols and secrets. But after Veda’s mysterious death, Darkly went bankrupt, and production was discontinued. The remaining games are priced like highly sought-after works of art, with the rarest and most notorious items commanding tens of millions of dollars at auction.

Now the interns are thrust into the enigmatic heart of Louisiana Veda’s operation, and Dia immediately questions everything: Who are these other kids? Why do they all seem to have something to hide? And why was she really chosen? It soon becomes clear that this summer will be the most twisted Darkly game of all.

The project will be shepherded by Blumhouse TV’s incoming president Melissa Aouate, who starts later this month.

Curtis’ deal with Blumhouse already has yielded two series executive produced by her, “The Sticky” and “Scarpetta,” both for Prime Video. She also appears in the later.

It was announced last week that Curtis is starring in and producing Russell Goldman’s psychological horror film Sender, currently in production.

The film, starring Bella Thorne and Cameron Monaghan as twin siblings who move into the Amityville house with their mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and younger sister (Mckenna Grace), occupies a strange place in the “franchise” canon.

Unlike most of the other texts, Amityville: The Awakening acknowledges the existence of the other films as films, specifically the 1979 original (listen), the 2005 remake (listen), and the incest-heavy prequel/sequel (listen). Admittedly Khalfoun’s script doesn’t go much further than that, descending into pretty basic/generic ‘Amityville haunting’ territory, but it’s an interesting wrinkle in what was clearly intended to be a theatrical re-launch for the “series.”

The other reason to explore this particular entry is how it handles disability representation (spoiler alert: not well!), tries to capitalize on Thorne’s popularity (she’s fine), and the “franchise”s continued use of solid practical FX for its possession sequences.

Monaghan actually does some really great work as both a comatose teen and a villain, though it’s hard to shake the ickiness of Khalfoun’s resolution, which veers into ableist territory after deliberately avoiding the euthanasia debate for the majority of its runtime.

Still, the film is an odd curiosity that likely would have revamped the flagging “series” had it made its way into more than a handful of theaters. And as folks who have read my ‘Amityville IP‘ editorial series know, this film is directly responsible for the glut of DTV knock-offs, which explodes in the years after The Awakening‘s release (2018-present).

So…that’s something.

While Abel Tesfaye has acted in recent projects including Uncut Gems and the HBO series “The Idol,” the upcoming movie notably marks the singer’s feature debut on the big screen.

The new movie will be an extension of The Weeknd’s sixth studio album of the same title that debuted in January, which will stand alongside the film’s score by The Weeknd and Daniel Lopatin. The album, Hurry Up Tomorrow, is now available to stream/download. You can also watch the music video for the new single “Open Hearts” now. The project also represents the conclusion to The Weeknd’s artistic trilogy, completing the journey that began with albums After Hours and Dawn FM.

Once inside the complex, you’ll move through sealed chambers, completing immersive environmental puzzles and cognitive experiments, and uncovering the story through reports, surveillance, and what others left behind by others who were part of the same protocol. And the twist for all of this? After finishing the game, players vote on what happens next through the game’s official Discord, shaping the future of the story together, in true SCP fashion.

The game doesn’t branch. The experiment evolves. And what happens next depends entirely on the players, not the developer.

I was excited to catch up with Until Dawn‘s director and director of photography for many reasons, but most specifically because they have both worked on horror films in the past, and both have experience with adaptations. I knew David F. Sandberg had directed horror titles Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation, and the comic book adapted film, Shazam!, and I’d previously had the pleasure of interviewing Maxime Alexandre on his experience as director of photography on Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.

As someone who has played Until Dawn about five times, I was eager to dive into the process of adapting the horror video game with them. Read on below for what we discussed.

This interview has been transcribed and edited for length and clarity.

Bloody Disgusting: When crafting the film, did you go into it with the mindset to make a good adaptation of the video game, to just make a good film, or was it always on your mind to strike a balance of both?

David F. Sandberg: You definitely want to strike a good balance, but what I liked about the script was that they didn’t try to just do what the game already did so well. The game is like a 10 hour movie–which is a lot to work with–so I like that [the screenwriters] did an expansion of the world instead of trying to do what we’ve already seen. So it’s more Until Dawn instead of the same Until Dawn. For me, it was such a joy to [implement] all these different genres and go all out with practical effects and monsters. But it was a balance in that you want a movie that can be enjoyed by the people who haven’t played the game, but it also needs to fit into this established universe, and we have these things [in the film] that tie it all together.

Maxime Alexandre: When I read the script for the first time, I was satisfied that it wasn’t 100% based on the game–more like an evolution. It could be frustrating focusing so much on pleasing the gamers that you start losing the cinematographic aspects of a movie [while trying to adhere to] the game.

BD: Was it intimidating to adapt a video game that has such a cult following, especially given the current climate of video game adaptations?

Sandberg: We have some experience with this from Shazam!–comic book fans can also get pretty intense. To be honest, after Shazam! Fury of the Gods, there was so much sort of negativity against me that’s a lot to deal with, that I kind of felt like “I don’t want to do another IP- based movie.” Well, for one, everything is IP these days [laughs], but when I got this script I was like…I can’t say no to this. Look at all the cool shit we’d get to do!

Alexandre: My answer is like copying my best friend [Sandberg] on the other side: as a cinematographer, it was a huge gift. Being able to shoot so many practical effects on camera–even simple things like driving a car, nowadays, you often end up in a studio in front of things like video walls, but we did everything on camera. It felt a lot like jumping back into, as I like to say and everyone laughs, cinema-cinema.

Sandberg: Shazam! was a movie where we did driving shots on a stage, and while it’s much more comfortable, it doesn’t feel real. But to do it how we did [with Until Dawn], where we had everyone cram into an actual car, and you have a little piece of road that you can only get one or two takes from, and you’re in a van behind it with a walkie talkie…it sucks but you get the light interaction, you can really feel it more. I actually just watched a movie the other night–I’m not going to say which one–but there was a driving shot where there was no light changes [on the actors], and on one side, the background was going by faster than the other side, and it just takes you out of the movie.

BD: What’s something new that the film will offer to fans of the Until Dawn game, and why they should go see it?

Sandberg: For me, it’s more Until Dawn. If you liked the game, the vibe, and the type of kills in it, you get more of it in the film. For fans in particular, I think it’s fun to find all the little references and homages–even the scene with the restraining chair that Megan’s in–we made that as an exact replica from one in the game. So I think there’s a lot of fun for fans in the film.

BD: In Until Dawn (the game), there’s a character that’s really invested in horror films and practical effects–he leverages that passion in an elaborate prank against his friends. Were you channeling that character with the effects in the film?

Sandberg: [Laughs] That’s a very good point, but it wasn’t really conscious! It’s more so something that I’ve dreamed about forever to be able to do. But it is challenging, it takes a lot of time and prep, and you only get one shot or two [when dealing with practical effects] so you better hope it works. We had to do the bathroom scene on the last day [of shooting] because it destroyed the set with all the blood and everything.

BD: Maxime, I wanted to ask if you faced any specific challenges you faced with the cinematography of the film given that you were adapting a video game that is so heavily linked with a sense of decision and control. Specifically, when it comes to the sense of immersion, given that audiences aren’t in control of what’s happening.

Alexandre: When starting any movie, I go into building it step by step based on the requests of the director. In this one, one dogma that I really focused on with the storytelling was to underline how the cast was losing memory, strength, and feeling fatigued. There’s a lot of factors from a cinematographic point of view that you may barely see in the film, but you probably feel. A lot of the camera movement was impacted by the deaths [and themes]. One challenging aspect was the fact that the cast is made up of five characters, and keeping all five of them within the frame, especially given some of the shots involving practical effects. Going back to the car example, yes it’s just someone driving a car, but there’s also a storm outside, and a camera moving inside the car, so it’s not that simple.

Sandberg: One thing I like that Maxime did that I haven’t really seen done too much otherwise is leaning into the fact that your eyes get used to the dark. There’s one scene in the movie where all the lights go out, and you can’t see anything and they need to use flashlights. But as the scene goes on, you see more and more as Maxime lit it more and more with the thinking that, well, if you’re in a situation like that, your eyes start getting more adjusted to it. There’s a couple times we do that in the movie.

BD: As a follow-up to this question, it felt like there were a lot of intentional moments in the film that felt reminiscent of the “Don’t Move” sequences that the game is famous for.

Sandberg: The biggest reference to what you’re talking about is that red light scene when the Wendigo is right by Clover–it’s like straight from the game–don’t move the controller because it’s right there.

BD: Speaking of the Wendigo. At one point, it seems like the audio of the Wendigo screeching is pulled directly from the game?

Sandberg: They are! We actually got the actual audio files from the game developers for the movie. One thing that we had to change a little about the Wendigos from the game is that they have super long limbs that no human would have. Since I really wanted to do as much practical effects as we could, and I wanted it to feel like there was actual “Wendigos” with the cast, we cast people for them and put them in makeup. We tried out best to find the tallest, skinniest people we could in Budapest [where the movie was filmed]. We hired these dancers who can move their bodies in these interesting ways to give them a type of non-human feeling.

BD: Can you elaborate on where the film fits in the Until Dawn universe?

Sandberg: The film was written that these events take place after the events of the game. We wanted to have it all tied together as much as possible.

BD: There’s a great sort of “found-footage” sequence in the film. There’s that great moment of the ghost figure appearing at the end of a dark hallway that swoops towards the camera. Can you elaborate on that sequence more?

Sandberg: That’s me! What we did was build a full-scale set, and then a 60% scale set. When we see the actors, we’re filming one direction, and then when we pan over, there’s a hidden cut where the camera operator’s on a little chair so it looks half as tall, then I’m crouched down at the end of the hall with the mask and come out. That’s something I’ve always wanted to do–play with different scales of sets–so that was a fun thing about the found footage sequence.

Alexandre: The funny thing about the found-footage sequence is that we shot the movie with the Alexa 65 camera, and with that sequence, we considered an approach of doing it with a DSLR or something similar, but I was so attached to keeping the same type of chromatic effects throughout the film. But it was funny, with certain shots in the sequence, when the camera was falling we would just throw the Alexa 65 and watch it fly onto the floor.

Sandberg: [Laughs] It’s a huge, heavy camera. But it’s funny, in the witch’s house, there’s a TV and there’s a little cameo of Lotta [Losten] as a reporter, and for that, we had shot it on the Alexa 65, then cropped to 4:3, transferred to VHS, then played back on a CRT-TV through the RF connection. So it’s like the shittiest Alexa 65 quality you’ve ever seen.

BD: The Butterfly Effect is an integral component of the game. The film seems to lean into the concept given the cast’s choices and how they tie into how many tries they have to survive the night. Were you intentionally leaning into that?

Sandberg: There was definitely a version of that with the night starting over each time leading to different choices which ties in. There’s even some hidden little runes throughout the film–I had found this rune that means “Dawn” or “New Day” or something–and it kind of looks like the wings of a butterfly–so we put that in here and there, like in the witch’s house there’s that shape made out of bones, and on the pickax there’s the little rune. So we definitely tried to tie that in as much as we could.

BD: The video game is known for having a ton of alternate endings. Was a different ending to the film or alternate endings ever considered?

Sandberg: There is an alternate ending to the film in the deleted scenes, which will be in the home video release! It ends the same way for the main cast, but it’s a little different.

Based on the bestselling game created by Brian Clarke, The Mortuary Assistant follows “Rebecca Owens, a recent mortuary science graduate who takes a night shift job at River Fields Mortuary. Holland will play Rebecca, with Sparks taking on the role of Raymond Delver, Rebecca’s mortician boss.

The feature adaptation is said to be “a new chapter in the story that will expand on the game’s world and mythology, delving deeper into the lore of the demonic entities plaguing River Fields.”

Tracee Beebe and Brian Clarke adapted the screenplay.  Jeremiah Kipp (Slapface) directs.

Clarke said in a statement, “Seeing The Mortuary Assistant evolve over the years from a small prototype to a full feature film is beyond anything I could have imagined as a solo developer. Jeremiah Kipp is an insanely skilled director, and it has been one of the highlights of my life working with him.

“Jeremiah and the entire team at Epic Pictures have done an amazing job capturing the spirit of the game while adding their own unique cinematic flair. It is an honor to see Willa and Paul bring these characters to life along with the rest of the film crew. I feel extremely fortunate and can’t wait for fans to see The Mortuary Assistant expand into new territory.”

The Mortuary Assistant was published in 2023 by DreadXP. Harrison Abbott wrote in his review of the game, “It’s unnerving, terrifically paced, narratively involving and mechanically inventive. In fact, when it’s all working as intended it’s genuinely one of the best indie horror games to have come out in recent years.”

Patrick Ewald’s Epic Pictures is producing via its horror outfit, Dread, alongside Cole Payne’s Traverse Media.

In the Jamie Blanks-directed 1998 slasher starring Jared Leto, Alicia Witt, and Rebecca Gayheart, a college student suspects a series of bizarre deaths are connected to urban legends.

The original slasher was followed by two sequels, Urban Legends: Final Cut, released theatrically in 2000, and the direct-to-video film Urban Legends: Bloody Mary in 2005.

The original Urban Legend was written by the late Silvio Horta.

Paul Lê wrote here on Bloody Disgusting back in 2021, “Jamie Blanks’ debut is hardly the first horror movie to draw inspiration from urban legends. The 1983 portmanteau-film Nightmares yields a rather faithful adaptation of “The Killer in the Backseat”, whereas another anthology, 1997’s Campfire Tales, borrows from three other different legends. And of course the basic plots of When a Stranger Calls and Black Christmas are based on “The Babysitter and the Man Upstairs”. Yet unlike the aforesaid films, this movie is forthcoming about the influences and completely embraces these outlandish yarns for all they are.”

Paul continued, “Urban Legend is accused of being too imitative of Scream; there is no doubt Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s movie made its existence possible in the first place. However, Silvio Horta‘s subversion of the film’s entire motif is something that goes unnoticed.”

With Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer returning to life and a fresh take on Urban Legends on the horizon, it seems safe to say that the ’90s slasher is officially back!

The Massachusetts island, which stood in for the fictitious Amity Island in Steven Spielberg‘s 1975 groundbreaking classic, will host a variety of themed events between June 20-23.

National Geographic and Amblin Documentaries, in conjunction with the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce and Circuit Arts, will present the premiere of Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story on June 20 at the Martha’s Vineyard Performing Arts Center.

The authorized documentary uncovers the behind-the-scenes stories of the bestselling novel and Spielberg’s blockbuster film along with diving into our enduring fascination with sharks. The screening is free.

It will be followed by an after party hosted by the Chamber of Commerce at The Harbor View Hotel. Step into the world of Jaws with inspired props for photo ops, exclusive swag, shark-themed cocktails, live music, and an electric atmosphere.

The celebration continues on June 21 with a presentation of Jaws in concert at the Winnetu Oceanside Resort. The immersive screening of the film is a accompanied by a live performance of John Williams’ iconic music score by the Cape Symphony.

Presented by the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, with support from Circuit Arts, the outdoor screening set to the breathtaking score will transport fans straight back to Amity Island.

Prepare to be fully immersed in the world of sharks with Discovery’s Shark Week VIP Experience, an activation featuring Shark Week giveaways, photo ops, and a nostalgic 1975-inspired atmosphere.

Meanwhile, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum will host a Jaws exhibition dedicated to the film’s production on Martha’s Vineyard from May 24 to September 7. It will feature rare photographs, oral histories, original art, and movie props.

The Museum will also host Amity Homecoming Weekend on June 19-23, featuring memorabilia, a to-scale replica of the Orca interior, special programs and talks.

A Reunion Day event will take place on June 22 in collaboration with The Vineyard Gazette Media Group, bringing together island residents who were part of the film, and special guests for an interactive experience on the museum’s front lawn. All attendees will receive a complimentary copy of Jaws at 50: Commemorative Anniversary Magazine.

Even more Jaws-inspired activities await visitors, including Oak Bluffs Harbor Festival on June 21 (vendors and entertainment), Sharks in the Parks (public art installation in Oak Bluffs), Sculpin Gallery at The Carnegie (Jaws memorabilia exhibit), Amity Island Storefront Displays (themed decor and merchandise in Edgartown, Vineyard Haven, and Oak Bluffs).

There are also guided Jaws filming locations tours plus a Jaws 50th anniversary map. In partnership with the MA Film Office, the map highlights the real locations where scenes from the film were shot in addition to nearby local attractions.

One June 21, join retired Edgartown Harbor Master Charlie Blair at the Carnegie Heritage Center in Edgartown as he shares stories from the Jaws set. Rare Jaws artifacts, including the shark weathervane from Quint’s shack and the original Amity National Bank Sign, will be on display.

Other special events include: cast and crew meet-and-greets at The Wharf Pub (June 20-22); author Ryan Dacko (The Book of Quint) and Mike Smith (Jaws 2: The Making of the Hollywood Sequel) at  Edgartown Books; Barks & Sharks: A Jaws-Inspired Dog Costume Meetup at the Edgartown Lighthouse (June 21); and a Jaws-themed baseball game between the MV Sharks and the North Shore Navigators (June 19).

Season 3 ends Amelia’s escape attempt from Season 2.2 and introduces The Jaeger, a merciless hunter designed by Dr. Easterman to torment Reagents for their defiance. Described as a ponderous but punishing killer, the Jaeger is guided by Murkoff via remote radio transmissions and won’t rest until the assigned target is destroyed. Along with The Jaeger, a new game mode dubbed the “Trial Maker” has been added, allowing players to create and share their own Trials using customized Variators, subjecting their peers to whatever torment they can dream up.

That’s not all, as Season 3 also introduces The Relapse Initiative to The Outlast Trials, a prestige system offering Reagents the chance to revert their therapy level for permanent upgrades and rewards of their choosing. Additionally, a Nudity Filter is now available as a toggle, allowing players to hide nudity and sexually explicit content—because sometimes, less is more.

The Season 3 update also adjusts the progression system to fit the new maximum therapy level (99). Amps are now unlocked as a batch of 3 at different milestones throughout the progression, and Reagents are now rewarded with XP based on their grade, with Performance XP improved and more rewarding based on performance during a Trial.

Lastly, there’s The Sweet Release, a new paid DLC pack released alongside Season 3, featuring Easter-themed cosmetics among other bonuses that’s currently available for $19.99 USD. Alongside a new storyline set in Suburbs—a twisted trial zone overseen by Francoand two additional MK-challenges, Season 3 is bringing more content to The Outlast Trials than ever before.

“I tried relentlessly, and she’s dead,” Kaytin Robinson tells the outlet, speaking about Helen. “I tried, okay? I harassed her! But she is dead. I tried to pitch some crazy shit too.”

“I was like, ‘What if it’s like you weren’t dead and you’re actually alive, but in hiding?’ And Sarah’s like, ‘I was on ice. I was the most dead a person could be. You can see my frozen body.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, but what if?’ And she said, ‘I am dead. I am Sarah Dead Gellar.'”

What about Brandy, who appeared in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer back in 1998? The answer there is a bit different. “You’ll have to go see the movie,” the director teases.

Oscar® nominee Rachel McAdams (Doctor Strange) and Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner) star with Dennis Haysbert (“24”) and Chris Pang (Crazy Rich Asians).

Described as a cross between Misery and Castaway, the script was written by Damian Shannon & Mark Swift (Freddy vs. Jason, Friday the 13th).

Bill Pope — whose previous collaborations with Raimi include Darkman, Army of Darkness, Spider-Man 2, and Spider-Man 3 — serves as director of photography.

Sam Raimi most recently directed Marvel’s horror-heavy sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but he hasn’t directed a full-on horror movie of his own since Drag Me to Hell. Stay tuned for more on Raimi’s long-awaited return to horror.

“Following a successful console launch, amassing a whopping 1 million copies sold in just over a month and 2 million in just over 3 months, the ghost hunting community is continuing to grow with over 3 million console sales to date,” reads the press release.

This is all on top of Kinetic Games having released the new “Cursed Hollow” seasonal event last week, which added new community and personal objectives across nine seasonally-decorated maps.

Still to come this year is the Chronicle update, which is all about revamping the way players record evidence (and are rewarded for it), in any investigation. The Journal will be receiving a new Media tab which will house Photos, Videos as well as evidence record by a new piece of hunting equipment in the Sound Recorder. The update will also bring with it a few extra bits, but those are being kept under wraps until the update is closer to launch (whenever that might be).

Phasmophobia is available now on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5 and PS VR2, and the Xbox Series.

The new adaptation is said to be the first in a series of “elevated genre pics”  developed and financed by Woodlake Entertainment.

Herbert West: Reanimator centers on “the brilliant but mercurial physician West, whose rabid obsession and pursuit of life extension succeeds to a horrifying effect.”

The news arrives as the short story’s first feature adaptation, Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator, turns 40 this year. This loose retelling of H.P. Lovecraft’s Herbert West-Reanimator goes for the jugular in terms of gore and laughs thanks to director Stuart Gordon, producer Brian Yuzna, and actor Jeffrey Combs as Herbert West. 

Lovecraft’s short story, first serialized in Home Brew magazine in 1922, is the first among his works to mention the fictional Miskatonic University. 

“We are very excited for Woodlake and the amazing team assembled to reinvent this classic horror literature into a contemporary frightening feature film,” said producer Jeffrey Lewis, owner of Woodlake. It sounds as though this new adaptation will adhere to the source material and opt for a more serious approach over Gordon’s splatstick humor.

Simon and Metcalfe may be best known for The Haunting in Connecticut, which grossed $78.8 million worldwide and received a sequel, but the scribes also penned ’90s cult horror movie Bones. Simon also wrote Books of Blood and “Salem.”

Keith Previte also produces. John Simmons and Roger Lewis will executive produce with Andrew Trapani.

Bill Hader and Daniel Zelman (“Damages”) are developing the HBO series.

Variety reports, “Hader is co-writing with Zelman, with both serving as co-showrunners and executive producers. Hader would also direct should the project move forward.”

The site reminds, “Jim Jones founded the Peoples Temple in the 1950s and established what became known as Jonestown in the 1970s in the nation of Guyana. Jonestown came to international attention when over 900 members of the Peoples Temple, including Jones, died in a mass murder-suicide at Jones’ direction in 1978.”

Bloody Disgusting’s own Murder Made Fiction dove into Jim Jones and the Jonestown Massacre last October. They explain, “It’s a fascinating case that prompts us to consider how people can begin a cause with altruistic motives and the intent to do good, but eventually, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Jones is a prime example of this.”

“Over time, the horrific mass suicide that occurred in the jungles of Guyana have been reduced to a cultural joke – “Drink the Kool-Aid” – which a) is factually incorrect and b) diminishes the cultural impact this event had,” they continue. “It’s a horrifying story, but one with a long legacy about how cults are perceived and handled, particularly by law enforcement.”

From creator Joe DeVito, the King Kong of Skull Island saga “reveals the details surrounding the earliest beginnings of the Kongs, the human civilization that lived on Skull Island, the building of the Wall, events leading to the arrival of Carl Denham and the capture of King Kong, and the aftermath of Kong’s tragic fall from atop the Empire State building.”

According to the property’s official website, “King Kong of Skull Island is the first fully comprehensive King Kong origin story and the only such prequel/sequel created in partnership with the estate of Kong’s creator, Merian C. Cooper.”

Deadline details, “World Builder will partner with DeVito ArtWorks and the Merian C. Cooper Estate to develop books that expand the King Kong of Skull Island universe.”

We learned in 2022 that a live action King Kong of Skull Island series was in the works at Disney+ with James Wan producing, and it sounds like that project is still taking shape. That will also be a partnership between DeVito, World Builder Entertainment, and Cooper’s estate.

“We’re thrilled to have World Builder Publishing as our publishing partner,” said DeVito. “Their expertise in franchise-building and storytelling makes them the perfect home for Kong’s next chapter. Extending World Builder’s reach into the often frustrating and slow-moving world of traditional publishing brings a welcome alternative to the industry.”

The animated series set in the world of “Stranger Things” is currently in the works with Eric Robles (“Fanboy & Chum Chum,” “Glitch Techs”) as showrunner.

Plot details have not been revealed, but Summer 1985 is when the third season of “Stranger Things” took place.

“We’ve always dreamed of an animated ‘Stranger Things’ in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling,” said “Stranger Things” creators Matt & Ross Duffer.

“We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with –– the scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you! The adventure continues…”

The Duffers are executive producing the new project via their Upside Down Pictures production banner, along with Roble for Flying Bark Productions and Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen via 21 Laps.

While we continue to wait for “Stranger Things” Season 5, the prequel stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow is now on Broadway and London’s West End.

Elle Fanning‘s lead character, Thia, is a Weyland-Yutani synthetic!

A close look at her eyes in the screen grab above reveals the logo of Weyland-Yutani, the unscrupulous megacorporation established in the Alien franchise.

Synthetics, also known as androids, are biomechanical humanoids like Ash in Alien, Bishop in Aliens, David in Prometheus, and Andy in Alien: Romulus.

Today’s trailer also features a glimpse of a Weyland-Yutani vehicle:

This marks the first connection between the Alien and Predator film franchises since 2004’s Alien vs. Predator and 2007’s Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem, which are not considered canon to either mainline series.

The two properties’ shared history dates back to Dark Horse’s Aliens Versus Predator comic in 1989. A cinematic crossover was first hinted at in 1990’s Predator 2, in which a Xenomorph skull appears among the Predator’s trophies.

David Howard Thornton stars as Steamboat Willie in Screamboat, a twisted version of the black-and-white Mickey Mouse that was introduced in Disney’s animated short in 1928.

Steven LaMorte (The Mean One) directed the public domain nightmare.

In the film, “Be our guest on a NYC ferry ride that turns into a hilarious nightmare when a mischievous mouse named Steamboat Willie becomes a monstrous reality. As passengers set sail, their trip turns deadly when the tiny terror unleashes murder and mayhem.”

From the producers of Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3, Screamboat is written and directed by Steven LaMorte (The Mean One). Quantum Creation FX, Inc. (The Last Voyage of the Demeter) created the creature from designs by concept artist Christian Cordella (Spider-Man: No Way Home).

In addition to sharing the trailer for Predator: Badlands, Bloody Disgusting was exclusively shown the first twenty(ish) minutes of Trachtenberg’s upcoming film, with the caveat that footage was unfinished in various VFX stages. We were intimately introduced to the main character, Dek (played in costume and motion-capture by Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi), laying the groundwork for a backward Predator experience where we’re rooting for, sympathizing with and explicitly following a Predator’s journey.

The sixth Predator live-action film, eighth if you count Alien vs. Predator crossovers, isn’t afraid to incorporate extended lore. “One of the cool things about the movie is that we’re on Yautja Prime—there’s a lot in this movie from the extended universe.” This is a futuristic Predator sequel with laser grappling hooks and “shinier” technology, built from the ground up. Dek’s spoken Yautja language was developed by the mentee of the fellow who invented Avatar’s Na’vi dialect. “We insanely decided to treat [the language] properly like [Elvish] for Lord of the Rings or [Dothraki] for Game of Thrones, except for those there’s more precedent.”

Truthfully, the Predator films haven’t cared much about continuity. “All the stuff you’ve seen in other Predator movies? There’s no sense of it. None of it was made with intention.“ Trachtenberg not only decided to make Predator: Badlands with intention but also developed an entire language. “I wanted to be very careful that I did not fall into a trap [of] making something more lore-focused than story-focused.“ He joked about franchises tending to go “whole hog“ into entries about Senate trading committees or other hyperspecific elements, where he didn’t want his next Predator film to be bogged down by Yautja cultural weights. “I wanted to make [Predator: Badlands] feel genre, feel very specific, and [feel like] an inversion of the [main] premise—now the Predator is on [another] planet, and he’s going to be hunted by things and has to use his guile to [survive].”

Trachtenberg had precise casting ideals for Dek. “We [wanted] a stunt guy.“ Enter Dimitrius, who earned his role through rigorous physical auditions. “[Predator: Badlands] was a real opportunity because all the other Predators needed to be seven feet six. It’s very specific.“ The filmmaker recalled how lucky they got casting Dane DiLiegro as the “Feral“ in Prey because actors of that height aren’t often trained stuntmen, but Dane was an ex-basketball player with athletic abilities. Dek opened the door further to cast a proper stunt actor as a Yautja, presumably like if Jean-Claude Van Damme hadn’t been famously fired from 1987’s original.

“At one of our castings, Dimitrius came up, and the way he moved just had a great swashbuckle,“ recalls Trachtenberg. “We set up a physical obstacle course, and that’s how we cast him.“ What I would give to see is the footage of actors competing in Predator Ninja Warrior for the lead in Predator: Badlands, but it wasn’t just about agility and stamina. Trachtenberg continues, “I was not prepared for what he does [dramatically]; I could not believe it. How did we luck into this guy?“ The eager actor invested himself in the world of Predator: Badlands, learning an imaginary Yautja language and bringing immense passion to the part despite his face never being on camera. That was a highlight brought upon by unfinished visual effects—we could see Schuster-Koloamatangi’s facial intensity covered in painted dots that would eventually become Dek’s signature Yautja profile.

Now, don’t preemptively fret. Predator: Badlands will feature substantial digital effects because of the film’s otherworldly nature. “Every shot’s a visual effects shot. I thought I had a lot of effects shots on Prey, but this is nuts.” There’s no disrespect to the phenomenal practical effects displayed over the years through spine-ripping gore and fantastic Yautja costumes. Trachtenberg reflected on the friendship he built with SFX wizard Alec Gillis, an influential part of the Predator franchise, who ended up working with legendary creative studio WETA Workshop to collaborate on the “movie magic“ of blending practical and digital designs.

Most noticeably, Predator: Badlands relies on Yautja VFX because Stan Winston’s superior headpieces come with practical limitations. In the facial region, where mechanics would open mandibles and raise eyebrows, Trachtenberg requires more emotiveness, given Dek has infinitely more screentime than other Yautjas. “The cool [thing about] what we’re doing is digital effects are meant to match the suit, not match creature flesh.“ WETA worked tirelessly to make Dek and other Predators feel amazingly lifelike yet fantastical, unlike the head-to-toe animation when you see computer-generated Gollum from Lord of the Rings or other fully rendered aliens. “That kind of [animated] flesh is different than a suit, so [our] face perfectly blends in and matches that suit quality—hopefully it looks like real material.“ But Dek can’t one-to-one mirror the actor’s mouth like Andy Serkis as Gollum or any performer in the newer Planet of the Apes films, given how Yautja mandibles operate differently. “Dimitrius is driving the animation, but … it’s all been very tricky, and we’re thankfully finding our way through it. Whenever Dimitrius blinks, we might want that to be an eyebrow movement … or how his smiles and snarls work with the mandibles different from the mouth inside.”

It’s important to note that of the footage I could behold, especially what was nearly 100% polished, Predator: Badlands looked badass. The opening shot has Dek careening over a glistening landscape shot top-down Akira style, immediately giving Trachtenberg’s vision a fresh visual language compared to other franchise entries, like how Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi pops as a Star Wars movie with unique stylistic choices. An action sequence follows between Dek and his Yautja brother—training battleground stuff—followed by Dek’s prideful desire to select Kalisk as his hunting ground, known as the “Death Planet,“ where he’s to prove his unsupportive father wrong. Dek’s ultimately fighting for acceptance in his own clan, with his own bloodline, and if his fight with Kalisk’s first challenge says anything—where he defends against an onslaught of forest murder vines—Dek is a formidable warrior with everything to prove.

Trachtenberg’s list of influences on Predator: Badlands will have action diehards salivating. “There’s a Frank Frazetta, Conan the Barbarian, Spartan thing … but also you think of The Book of Eli or Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior … Shane, [very] western, very Clint Eastwood-y.“ Dek even starts to resemble Conan or Drax the Destroyer later on. The filmmaker went on to detail how happy he was with Prey’s execution but wanted to push Predator: Badlands even further, and mentioned Terrence Malick when recalling his shooting style on set in New Zealand. “We were out in the wilderness with hip waders, in trenches, with eels, and all that for 90% of the shoot … but things were also augmented.“ Despite Trachtenberg’s moderate distaste for the overused descriptor, the word “grounded“ was also tossed around. “We need a better word than grounded, but it’s hard to find.“ 

There’s an adventurousness and vibrancy to Predator: Badlands that’s not always present in Predator films. Entries have uniformly been more action-centric than horror-forward, but this continuation feels more story-driven. “I never thought [the Predator] was Jason Voorhees or Freddy Krueger,“ explains Trachtenberg. “[Predators] had a code [like] hitmen or crime underworld Goodfellas. I felt like there was something cool to explore within that culture that’s different than just adding a bunch of stuff on top of it. It felt like we’re mining [ideas] as opposed to just throwing [more] at the franchise.”

Something we didn’t see was Elle Fanning’s introduction as Thia (reportedly), nor is Trachtenberg ready to reveal her origin. When asked if there would be more human interactions than Fanning, the answer was, “No comment … I want to save the fun.“ In the slightest of expansions, in response to a question about what Trachtenberg learned about developing character arcs from Prey to Predator: Badlands, he commented, “[Her] story [has the same roots but] is a bit different thematically, and starts to go into a different branch of proving oneself.”

As a bit, Trachtenberg asked us if we had theories about Fanning’s top-secret character. A fellow journalist suggested she’s a hunter from another planet. But someone else noted she has an android-esque mannerism and posed the possible Alien tie to Weyland-Yutani. Trachtenberg smirked, chuckled, and gave us a sly, “Yes, she does.” Is this just the tricky lead-on of a creator keeping our minds racing? Or is it unclear confirmation that we’ll be seeing the Predator and Alien universes colliding again soon? “There’s a unique hook to her character that is exciting in the pairing of [her and Dek].“ Get to speculating, internet.

This is a longer quote from Trachtenberg, but I wanted to include it all so you can make your own assumptions as to Fanning’s inclusion:

“As inspired as I am by movies, I’ve been very inspired by video games [like] Shadow of the Colossus, where you have a protagonist paired with someone else who provides color and connection. There’s a thing with a horse in Shadow of the Colossus that’s devastating when you play the game. And so [Predator: Badlands] was a little bit inspired by that in terms of wanting to see the Predator with someone else, this character who’s the opposite of him. He’s very laconic, [Fanning] is not. She’s capable in ways that he is not. Physically, she’s got a real thing that I’m so excited for you guys to see. But I want to let eventually some of that speak for itself.”

While this is a standalone Predator entry, Trachtenberg still can’t help throwing Easter Eggs in to appease franchise fans. Early in the film, Dek is cycling through holograms, or there’s a trophy case that’ll be worth a giggle. Humans being so low on the competition ranking alone has its comedic appeal. Oh, and no, that’s not a Starship Troopers nod, even though it looks like one (we tried).

But at the end of the day, Predator: Badlands is its own movie. It’s not reliant on memorable skeletons, callbacks to prior releases, or a cheeky line of dialogue. “It’s a big, crazy swing, and I think that’s what drives butts into seats.“ If Prey is any indication, that’s what Predator fans crave after so many recyclable hunter-killer redos. “If you want the same old Predator experience, you can hit play on Predator or Prey or any other, whichever one is your fit.” Trachtenberg’s desire to take us on a brand new ride sounds exactly like what can take the Predator franchise to the next level, and I can’t wait to see the result.

Like with Prey, Trachtenberg’s goal with Predator: Badlands was to “push the franchise’s boundaries,” allowing fans the opportunity to root for the Predator this time around.

Predator: Badlands looks like the biggest, craziest Predator movie we’ve ever seen, one that certainly pushes the franchise down a bold new path. You’ve truly never seen a Predator movie like this one before, and there’s not even an ounce of hyperbole in that statement. Owned by Disney under the 20th Century Studios umbrella, the Predator franchise of course kicked off with the original action-horror classic in 1987. That was followed by sequels Predator 2, Predators, The Predator, and Prey, as well as the two Alien vs. Predator movies. The long-running franchise also includes all kinds of comic books and games.

The sleepy New England town of Carpenter Falls is known for being the hometown of silver screen legend Marilyn Leigh Miller. As Halloween season arrives, an obsessed psychopath looks to pay tribute to the late B-movie scream queen by living out his own horror movie fantasies.

Caught in the madness is local video store clerk Quinn Curtis and her gang of movie-loving friends, whose knowledge of the genre may be their key to survival.

Spooky Madison (Phantom Fun-World), Dee Wallace (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial), Leah Voysey (Terrifier 2), Chaney Morrow (Haunt), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), Jack Norman (The Funhouse Massacre), and filmmaker Tommy Lee Wallace (Halloween III: Season of the Witch, IT) star.

Tory Jones (The Wicked One, Phantom Fun-World) directs from a script he co-wrote with Jerron Spencer (Phantom Fun-World). Cody Ruch (“The Mill,” CarousHell) handled the practical special effects.

“This film pays tribute to the ’90 and the era of the video store I was lucky enough to grow up in. That time was so informative to my love of the genre,” Jones tells Bloody Disgusting.

“I’ve made a slew of low budget indie films, but I would say to make a film that is so personal to me with a real budget, an incredible team, and horror legends I grew up watching is a dream come true. I can’t wait to unleash The Boy from Below onto the world.”

Executive producer P.J. Starks (10/31) adds, “Between Jack Norman’s portrayal of an intense, sadistic masked killer and the incredible splatter effects of Cody Ruch, I think slasher fans are in for a very fun and terrifying ride.”

The renewals are part of drag stars Dracmorda and Swanthula Boulet’s new multi-project deal with the streaming service.

Shudder has also picked up The Boulet Brothers’ Holiday of Horrors, a holiday special featuring original holiday horror tales co-hosted by David Dastmalchian (Late Night with the Devil),

Production began this week on “Titans” Season 2, which will be the first to stream later this year on Shudder and AMC+. No premiere dates have been announced for “Dragula” or “Holiday of Horrors,” but the latter is expected for December.

“We’re positively enthralled to extend our unholy alliance with Shudder and AMC+ through this multi-season pact,” the Boulet Brothers said in a joint statement. “It ensures the underworld stays wide open for many years to come — welcoming fresh souls, darker tales, and even more monstrous mayhem.

“We’re especially excited to be writing and directing the ‘Holiday of Horrors’ anthology special alongside some of our dearest friends and fresh new blood of the horror genre. Together, we’re summoning something truly diabolical — and this is only the beginning of the nightmares to come.”

AMC Networks’ EVP of linear and streaming products, Courtney Thomasma, said, “We’re thrilled to expand our partnership with The Boulet Brothers, who bring their iconic and passionate flair to every project they’ve ever touched and continue to push boundaries in the reality competition space. We can’t wait to see where Drac and Swan’s vision takes the audience next.”

“The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula” premiered on YouTube in 2016 before streaming on Prime and Netflix. Since the fourth season, it has been produced and distributed by Shudder.

Her Private Hell is set to star Sophie Thatcher (Companion, Heretic, “Yellowjackets”), Charles Melton (Warfare), Kristine Froseth (Apostle), and Havana Rose Liu (Lurker, No Exit).

Of course, the announcement brings no plot details at all, though Deadline shares that “insiders say it falls in line with the edgy thrillers the auteur is known for like Drive and Bronson.” Last year, Variety reported that the filmmaker was gearing up for his return to the big screen and that that feature “will have a lot of glitter and lot of sex and violence,” Refn promised. 

Variety had also suggested that this mystery project would return to similar themes and potentially characters explored in The Neon Demon and Only God Forgives, along with the note that this mystery project would be shooting this year.

Her Private Hell is expected to begin production this summer.

No matter the plot or genre, Her Private Hell marks Refn’s long-awaited return to moviemaking. The Neon Demon marked the filmmaker’s last feature, though Refn more recently helmed Netflix’s neon-drenched, six-episode noir series “Copenhagen Cowboy.”

First, Top Hat Studios will publish developer Anji Games’ psychological horror game Silly Polly Beast, which is scheduled to launch for consoles and PC via Steam later this year. A demo is currently available on Steam.

The story centres on Polly, a high school girl named Polly who escapes a nightmarish shelter, only to find herself trapped in the underworld. You’ll encounter the denizens of this otherworldly realm, and while not all of them are against you, none of them are on your side. Blending world exploration with shooting battles from side and top-down perspectives, you must master forbidden spells in a fight for freedom.

Top Hat Studios also announced that they will be publishing Numor Games’ turn-based RPG narrative-driven cosmic horror title The Backworld, which is due out on consoles and Steam next year. The nonlinear game requires you to sneak past threats, find alternative solutions such as diplomacy, and to fight when necessary.

With reality crumbling, you and your friends must face The Backworld to stop the chaos before it consumes everything. Slip between the cracks of reality into a broken world where danger awaits at every turn. Explore endless dimensions to defy beings born out of pure chaos. Lastly, Top Hat Studios and developer J.R. Hudepohl will be bringing their previously-announced Labyrinth Of The Demon King to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC via Steam on May 13. The King’s Field-inspired dungeon crawler is set in a world inspired by feudal Japan, and centres around Ashigaru, a footsoldier in the service of Lord Takeda Nobumitsu. The world has entered The Latter Age Of The Dharma, with society crumbling, and war, disease and famine having killed thousands. Not to mention that there are demons roaming around.

Jenna Ortega will be back as iconic character Wednesday Addams in “Wednesday” Season 2, with the actress repeatedly teasing in interviews that the new season will be bolder, darker, and more horror-heavy than the show’s first season. Here’s the new synopsis:

“Wednesday Addams returns to prowl the Gothic halls of Nevermore Academy, where fresh foes and woes await. This season, Wednesday must navigate family, friends and old adversaries, propelling her into another year of delightfully dark and kooky mayhem.”

Netflix also previews with a new press release, “Armed with her signature razor-sharp wit and deadpan charm, Wednesday is also plunged into a new bone-chilling supernatural mystery. Creator/showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar return for the spine-tingling second season, alongside executive producer and director Tim Burton.”

Joining Ortega in the new season will be fellow returning stars Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams, with Lady Gaga also joining the cast.

“Wednesday” Season 2 directors include Tim Burton, who directed episodes 201, 204, 207, and 208, alongside Paco Cabezas (202, 203), and Angela Robinson (205, 206).

“Stranger Things” star Finn Wolfhard is the co-writer, co-director and star of the throwback slasher, with Billy Bryk (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) co-writing and also starring.

Hell of a Summer follows 24-year-old camp counselor Jason Hochberg (Fred Hechinger), who arrives at Camp Pineway thinking his biggest problem is that he feels out of touch with his teenage co-workers. What he doesn’t know is that a masked killer is lurking on the campgrounds, brutally picking counselors off one by one.

The slasher’s cast also includes D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (“Reservation Dogs”), Abby Quinn (“Mad About You”), and Pardis Saremi (“Career Opportunities in Murder and Mayhem”).

From producer Sam Raimi and director David Yarovesky (Brightburn), the horror-thriller Locked arrived in theaters on March 21, and it’s now available on digital at home.

Bill Skarsgård and Anthony Hopkins star in Locked, which is actually a remake of the Argentinian action thriller 4X4. Michael Arlen Ross (Turistas) wrote the screenplay.

A mind-bending sci-fi horror movie directed by Grammy winning artist Flying Lotus (V/H/S/99, Kuso), Ash was also released in theaters on March 21 from RLJE Films and Shudder, and it’s now available at home. Rent it now for $19.99 or purchase it for $24.99. 

Eiza González (Baby Driver) and Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”) star in the sci-fi horror film alongside Iko Uwais (The Raid), Beulah Koale (Shadow in the Cloud), Kate Elliott (“Xena: Warrior Princess”), and Flying Lotus. Jonni Remmler wrote the film.

On the mysterious planet of Ash, Riya (González) awakens to find her crew slaughtered. When a man named Brion (Paul) arrives to rescue her, an ordeal of psychological and physical terror ensues while Riya and Brion must decide if they can trust one another to survive.

Nate Bolotin (The Raid, Mandy) and Mathew Metcalfe produce, while filmmaker Neill Blomkamp (District 9) serves as an executive producer. Expect it on Shudder later this year.

Brad Caleb Kane posted a photo of a “Crystal Lake” production draft script on Instagram and announced that the show’s production offices are now opened up for business!

Based on characters created by original Friday the 13th (1980) writer Victor Miller, the script in the photograph was written by Brad Caleb Kane himself, and the copyright is registered to “Camp Blood LLC.” It’s likely this means that pre-production has begun, with production gearing up to kick off soon. Stay tuned for more on all things “Crystal Lake” as we learn it.

Linda Cardellini will be playing Mrs. Voorhees in “Crystal Lake” for A24 and Peacock, described as “a mother who had given up a singing career to raise a special needs child and takes a dark turn when she loses her son.” Her son, of course, is none other than Jason Voorhees.

“Crystal Lake” is being described as an “expanded prequel” to the original Friday the 13th franchise featuring both Jason Voorhees and his mother, Pamela Voorhees. As mentioned, the streaming series will bring the Friday the 13th franchise back to life after 16 years of Jason Voorhees lying dormant at the bottom of the lake due to messy legal issues over the rights.

Bob Morley (“The 100”) and India de Beaufort (Kimi, Slumberland) are set to lead the ensemble cast that also includes Anna Akana (A Million Little Things), Doug Jones (The Shape of Water, Pan’s Labyrinth), and Heather Langenkamp (Little Bites, A Nightmare on Elm Street).

Another follows “Joey (de Beaufort), a grief-stricken author haunted by the death of her husband, Ben (Morley), a brilliant physicist. When Ben inexplicably appears one morning, alive and well, making breakfast in their kitchen, Joey is thrust into a waking nightmare where grief, memory, and reality begin to unravel.”

Chen co-wrote the screenplay with Alexander Hernandez-Maxwell. The film is produced by Chen’s longtime collaborators Artin John (Death Note, “The X-Files“) and Kealani Kitaura.

“Another is more than a horror film—it’s a meditation on grief, love, and fractured reality,” said Chen in a statement. “I’m pulling inspiration from storytellers like M. Night Shyamalan, Christopher Nolan, and Denis Villeneuve to create something atmospheric, emotional, and uniquely immersive. It’s the kind of film I’ve always wanted to make.”

“Andy’s vision is striking, emotionally intelligent, and always unexpected,“ said producer/actor Artin John. “He’s not just scaring audiences—he’s telling a story that sticks with you. We’ve built a creative family over several years, and this film is a huge next step.“ 

The project will shoot across multiple Los Angeles locations, including at Cinepacks Studios in Burbank, Chen’s own state-of-the-art production facility. 

Before Chen was getting Cronenbergian with “The Spider,“ starring Chandler Riggs, the filmmaker’s 2023 short “Close Your Eyes“ won Best Short at the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards. His transition into feature filmmaking feels like the natural next step.
