Hey y'all!

I wanted to share with you the wreath I made this week, inspired by Pinterest!

A medium sized straw wreath form + 32 mini indian corn + hot glue = Wreath LOVE.

I really like how the warm fall colors look against our red front door {Classic Burgundy by Benjamin Moore--the perfect color for a red front door!}.

It's something different from my usual wreath with faux mini pumpkins. And I'm loving the change! Have you started your fall decorating yet?

Hello All! It has been FOREVER since I posted. Or 7 months. Which is forever in blog-time.

Anywho--what have I been up to? Raising two sweet, rowdy boys. And lately, pinterest. Have you heard of this? Surely you have. It's an online bulletin board where you can save all of those neat ideas that you find online. Which is kinda what I use(d) this blog for, but pinterest is much faster and easier.

Favorite Wreaths

It's safe to say that I have a slight wreath obsession. We have one on our front door all year, and I change it out seasonally. I think it just gives a nice finishing touch to the outside of a home. Here are a few photos of my favorite wreaths for this time of year...

Here's the wreath on our front door--a square pinecone wreath from Southern Living at Home, with a painted metal letter added. It's pretty simple but it looks nice with our red door and dark brown shutters.

A magnolia wreath--the leaves are lacquered so you could use it year after year.

I love the outside of this house. Wreaths on each window make a house look so festive.

I like this whole photo! Including that gorgeous curtain fabric. This would be a fun spot to address Christmas cards.

Holy HUGE wreath. But it's the perfect size to offset that grid of prints. And a smaller wreath would be lost on that window.

Crisp, clean, white, simple. The plain evergreen wreath really stands out. And how cozy to have a fireplace in your dining room.

Letters to Santa

Have y'all seen this adorable letter to Santa? {found via Tatertots and Jello}

Our oldest doesn't like anything in a costume--Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, clowns.... So actually sitting on Santa's lap and asking him for gifts is out of the question! Last night we rode the Polar Express, and we filled out this little letter to give to Santa. It was the perfect way to "interact" with Santa for our little guy.

This first one is my favorite. It's originally from Cottage Living, and it's a vintage Christmas theme. I love all of the texture. Chippy wooden wheel over the fireplace, burlap stockings, textured walls. Swoon.

Holiday Style at Shutterfly

Do you send out holiday cards? It's something that I really look forward to, especially since having children. We don't live in the same town as the rest of our family, so it's always fun to send them photos and updates on the kids. I also really enjoy receiving cards from family and friends, and I love to display the cards we get in the mail. I strung them up in the kitchen window last year!

This year I'm so excited to send out our Christmas cards! My sweet neighbor, Jennifer, took our pictures last weekend and was able to get some good shots. Here are some outtakes:

Our youngest Peanut will be one next week (WOW!), and the boys are both at fun ages for smiling in pictures.

Jennifer did such a good job with the photos, so now all I have to do is choose the card and which photos to use! I've looked around on several sites, and I am really loving the choices from Shutterfly this year. Here are a few of my favorites:

I love this one for it's simple elegance, and because it has the year. Down the road when the kids are older and my memory is fuzzy, I'll easily be able to tell what year we sent this out! haha!

I just love the phrase "merry and bright" related to Christmas. To me, it's what the season is all about, and with children, they definitely help make the holidays merry and bright with their enthusiasm and smiles and excitement.

I love this one because it's so true for us this year. In spite of the economy and so much going on in the world, we are blessed. It's always good to remember that and be thankful.

There are so many great choices, so I'll probably have to get my sister and Mom to help me decide when we visit them for Thanksgiving! I want to order my cards and get them out ASAP.

Rooms to Grow

Maybe it's because I've decorated two kid rooms in the past year. Maybe it's because two of my closest friends are having babies in the next month, and I'm watching them do nurseries and "big kid" rooms for their oldest ones. But I've had kid room decorating on my mind!!

And whenever I see a kid room in a magazine spread, I pour over the photo and analyze it. I love seeing how other moms have designed and decorated for their brood. Here are some thoughts I've had about making a room fun, functional, and stylish!

1. Stay neutral on the basics.

Sure, right now your 2 year old loves Diego. But in 6 months, he may love Ninja Turtles. Those character comforters and curtains may be cute, but they could also quickly become dated. Instead, consider choosing neutrals or basic patterns for the major items (comforters, furniture, and curtains), and add in personalized "theme" items with accessories. My three year old's room is done in blues with a madras plaid comforter, while he has a few pieces of art that are airplane-themed. His solid navy curtains go with anything. I can easily see him in the space as an older child.

And don't be afraid of light colors, even white, for quilts and pillows. I know white may sound crazy, but it's actually a very kid-friendly color because it's so easy to bleach if it becomes stained.

2. Think long-term on furniture.

Those small toddler beds shaped like cars are fun, but will your child outgrow it next year when he has a growth spurt? Furniture isn't cheap, so it may be better to buy something that will last. We have a twin trundle bed in our son's room. Right now, he doesn't have friends sleep over, but in a few years, he will. And we'll be prepared. Look for furniture that is basic and can mature with your child, or that can be used in other rooms later.

This is my friend Susan's nursery for her baby due next month. The chair she chose could easily go in a living room, and she can move that large pie safe to her kitchen.

3. Allow space for creativity.

I can't emphasize enough how much I LOVE chalkboard paint. It's fun to have a space where you are allowed to write on the wall. How about putting a chair rail up in the room and painting the walls underneath with chalkboard paint? Or painting a huge rectangle as a chalkboard and then framing it out with inexpensive molding? What about painting the closet doors as a chalkboard, like this room from Attic Mag?

Another idea I love for a kids' room is to put cork on one wall to make a giant bulletin board. You can purchase large squares of cork at craft stores and make your own board, as large as you want! One day your preteen will be tacking up posters--go ahead and make a space for it now. In the meantime, you can display some of that art that the preschool sends home.

4. Don't forget storage and organization.

A bookshelf with storage baskets. A window seat that opens to reveal storage underneath. A great closet shelf system. Be sure to plan in plenty of storage space for all of the toys and clothes that your child has. I also like shoe storage bags--you don't always have to store shoes there. What about socks and undergarments? Art supplies? Doll clothes? Kids like having a sense of order, of knowing right where things go. Set up a system that works for your child, and they may be more inclined to keep things tidy.

5. Throw in a "grown-up" element.

I think we've all seen little girls' rooms with a fancy chandelier. How about a large pendant light with a drum shade? Or grown up, graphic prints and fabrics? A cozy armchair for reading? Beautiful art? Don't limit yourself to shopping in the kid section. In the room above from Southern Living, the large pillows with brown squares could easily be moved to the sofa. (I want them for my sofa!!) Throwing in a grown up item increases the sophistication of the space, and it adds interest, keeping the room from being too boring and "kiddie".

6. Get their input.

Maybe this should be point number 1. But ask your child for his/her ideas about the room. Ask them about favorite colors, how they want to use the room, what they want to play. My son loves playing trains and trucks--so he has a rug patterned with roads and buildings where he can happily play with all of his vehicles. Maybe your child loves art, so a desk and craft area makes more sense. Great kids' rooms are geared to the kids who live there. When looking in the room, you should be able to tell something about the child and their interests and hobbies.

Conquering Kid Clutter

{this is the March article I wrote for BirminghamMommy. I thought some of you here may want to read it.}

I'm fairly certain that my children aren't the only ones who have too. much. stuff. When we bought our house as a newly married couple, it seemed spacious and comfortable. Fast forward 5 years and 2 sons later, and I'm being buried alive by onesies and toy trains.

My poor husband will testify that I regularly freak out and begin to frantically clean and de-clutter (especially after watching an episode of "Hoarders", but that is another story). So what are some things that I do to keep it all manageable and have a nice home that doesn't look like a daycare center?

1. Prevention is the best medicine. After one trip to register at Babies R Us, I was certain that we didn't have space for all of the equipment that comes along with a baby. Swings, bouncy seats, exersaucers, high chairs....where was I going to put it? So I did two things: 1. I polled friends who were already mommies to determine what I REALLY needed vs. what was just the latest gimmick, and 2. For those items that were essentials, I tried to find compact or dual purpose models. For example, my high chair is a compact seat that sits on a regular kitchen chair and goes all the way from reclining for the baby food stage to a booster for a toddler.

2. Call off the Grandparents. My oldest son was the first grandchild on both sides of the family, and everyone was understandably excited. I just don't have the space to contain all of their "excitement" (wagons, 4 wheelers, jumpy houses, etc.) We've started asking the grands to give gift cards, donate to the college funds, or even pay for experiences like lessons, sports, the circus, seeing Thomas the Train at the local railroad museum, etc. They are more than happy to do this and love hearing about the kids' fun adventures.

3. Purge Regularly. Little happy meal toys. Party favors that are no longer interesting. Broken pieces of toys they haven't played with in a year. With these things, I just purge, purge, purge. I must add, though, that this is best done at nap time or when they are at school. My older son may have completely forgotten about that little toy, but if he sees me about to get rid of it, it is a TREASURE that he just NEEDS! I promise, this isn't mean. They have plenty of toys. Some of this junk is just collecting dust.

4. Rotate out the toys. One of the best ideas I've heard is to swap out toys so that your kids don't always have access to all of their toys. Keep a closet where you can stow toys, then rotate them monthly--your kids will feel like it's Christmas when the new ones come out. They'll never miss what's in storage.

5. Label and Sort. For those items that you do keep and need to organize, I am a huge fan of baskets and labels. I have baskets for trains, baskets for balls, baskets for art supplies, baskets for blocks. Everything can be put up neatly on bookshelves. I love this one, the Expedit from IKEA, featured on the blog Young House Love.

Having their stuff organized in baskets also helps at clean-up time. Even a toddler can learn to sort and put things away in designated places.

So those are some of my simple but effective methods for maintaining my sanity. If anyone else has good ideas, please chim in. My OCD self would love to hear them!

Double Duty Furniture

Since my last article for Birmingham Mommy, I've been thinking a lot about storage and kid clutter.

One of the things I've noticed around my own home, and in the homes I admire, is that they have created great storage by making smart choices when buying furniture. Not every home comes with built-in storage. For example, we don't have a linen closet upstairs--HELLO!! Mr. Builder, what were you thinking?? So I've had to come up with solutions.

Here are some examples of what I'm talking about:

Armoires--all of that closed storage space! This room looks great--and who knows what they have in there? Games, books, toys, throw blankets, kitchen serving pieces. It doesn't matter! Only you will know what junk you are hiding inside.

Trunks--especially as coffee tables. I have one as my coffee table right now and love it. It's easily accessible for the kids, and when it's closed, it's a great table surface for drinks, remotes, magazines, etc.

Bookshelves--the old standby, and very affordable now thanks to stores like Ikea and Target. Just line up some baskets and you've got a great storage system.

Dressers/Nightstands in the Living Room--all of those drawers!!! Who says you have to use furniture in the room it was originally designed for? Move things around to make it work for you. I think a dresser as your television stand under a wall-mounted screen is a great idea. You can store the components AND additional goodies like board games and books.

Consoles--this looks like a grown up bar and serving station, but maybe they have stuffed animals and extra diapers inside. That's what I would store in there these days!

Also don't forget about under the bed storage boxes and storage ottomans. Either can be found very inexpensively at discount stores.

One thing I notice about rooms featured in magazines or on design blogs is the art. You never see a framed "college-dorm-room-looking" poster on the walls. ;-)

Framed Doilies

Remember when I won that giveaway on Southern Hospitality for a framed item by Larson-Juhl? Well, I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that it's taken me this long to find something to frame. Last night, when I was awake (UGH!) with the Peanut, I had an idea....

I have several doilies that were my great-grandmother's. I am named for her, and she was just an awesome woman. She owned her own business (a huge factory that was the major employer in her town). She went on a safari to Africa as a young woman. So I now have these doilies, and while I'm not a "decorate with doilies on all of my end tables" kind of girl, I would like to display something of hers.

Peanut is Finally Here!

I'm still around--just very busy these days with our newest addition. Peanut was born 2 weeks early on December 1st--and he weighed in at 9 lbs. 9 oz. and 22 inches long.

The munchkin and the peanut. Seeing them together melts my heart.

We are all enjoying our early Christmas gift. I hope you and your family are having a wonderful holiday season, too!

Thanksgiving Banner

Here's a twist on the oldest Thanksgiving craft ever--turkey hands! It's easy and simple, which is always good for busy families, right?

If you can trace your hand, then you can make this decoration. Here's what you need:

scissors
tape
a pen
construction paper in fall colors
twine
mini clothes pins
googly eyes
glue

I think it's fun to do this as a family craft, Dad included. Everyone traces their hands and cuts them out (we did about 5 hands per person). Mom and Dad can help the little ones with the tracing and cutting.

After everyone's hands are cut out, you can have a family discussion about Thanksgiving and gratitude. Maybe expand the discussion based on your children's ages and your personal beliefs--how others sometimes have needs for food or shelter, how you can help others by volunteering and donating, etc.

Then have each person write things they are thankful for on their paper hands. Again, Mom and Dad can help write for the little ones.

Once you have your hands finished, you can embellish them with little rectangular legs, triangle beaks, and circle googly eyes (see how you can work in teaching shapes?).

To finish it off and appreciate your family's handiwork, they can be clipped onto some twine or ribbon with mini clothes pins to make a Thanksgiving garland. String it in front of a window or on your mantle...anywhere that you can all enjoy it for the season.

If your children are like mine, they will love seeing their projects displayed prominently in the house.
