Women’s Camp offered a spiritual get-away to scenic Hidden Falls Retreat Center in the rolling hills of eastern Lawrence County. This camp and others like it occur throughout the year, and we highly recommend the Hidden Falls experience! You can find more information about Hidden Falls at www.sacamp.org/retreats or calling them at (812) 279-2495.

And when your job is working with people, it’s absolutely vital. Salvation Army officers work with people who are hurting, sick and lonely every day.

Bloomington Corps officers are unique because the last two officer sets have come straight from the College for Officer Training. Their life experiences are all different, but they share the fact that Bloomington is their first appointment.

In the first five years of Officership, leaders in The Salvation Army complete ongoing education to become better leaders in the nonprofit sector. This ongoing education is titled SACEP (Salvation Army Continuing Education Program), and Officers participate regardless of whether they have advanced degrees.

Officers learn and apply best practices into daily ministry and missions. This week they will be taking classes in the following areas: Principles of Management, Counseling, Worship and Preaching, Discipling, Youth and Family Ministries, Cross-Cultural Ministries, and Nonprofit Retailing for Mission Advancement.

Lt. Tennyson will return to Bloomington in time to lead Sunday’s worship service at 11:00am.

The gathering will address ways that The Salvation Army can improve it’s approach to comprehensive case management by providing targeted services to families with a desire to take action to break the cycle of crisis and enable a path out of inter-generational poverty.

The Salvation Army meeting in Bloomington is timely. It represents an understanding that <a title="U.S. Census Bureau: State and County QuickFacts.
Ms. Cintron spent three days a week working at The Salvation Army Bloomington Corps where she and Lt. Melissa Heatwole worked on Corps programs such as Moonbeams, Club 316, teen programs, Vacation Bible School and much more. Under her enthusiastic role, the Salvation Army has seen new youth come forward to become Soldiers in The Salvation Army. In the photo above you can see just how loved she is. The picture was taken Sunday morning at the Bloomington Corps.

Her academic success was excellent, and she has chosen a higher calling to take her intellect: Teach for America. She has been placed at the brand new Enlace Academy on Indianapolis’ west side, where she will teach 3rd grade English. Those children will be blessed to have Ms. Cintron as a teacher.

We wish Ms. Cintron the best as she moves into the next chapter in what we know will be a blessed life.

Lt. Montenegro is the Multi-cultural Ministries Director at the College for Officer Training in Chicago. His work helps The Salvation Army prepare leaders for diverse urban ministry, rural ministry and everything in between. He writes thought provocative articles on multicultural missions in the United States which can be found on <a title="Lt.
You can follow Lt. Montenegro and his group of Cadets by following their Twitter hashtag #btowncadet. The cadets will lead a young adult Bible Study on Friday, work the Thrift Store’s sidewalk sale on Saturday and will also host a luncheon, at noon Sunday in The Salvation Army that is free and open to the public.

We hope that you can stop by throughout the weekend and encourage these young people who have dedicated their lives to service.

There were no children at the Child Development Center at The Salvation Army last Friday.

It wasn’t a snow day, it was an in-service day where teachers learned how to implement research-based practices into their science curriculum in each classroom. The training covered a diversity of science topics such as Scientific Inquiry and Process, The Living Environment, and The Nature of Science and Technology.

Developmentally-appropriate curriculum is important to prepare the children at The Salvation Army for a lifetime of learning. So, teachers from the classroom for older children covered topics including Scientific Thinking, Environments, and Communication.

These trainings are based on state standards called the Indiana Foundations for Young Children. The Salvation Army brings in area professionals to train its staff on implementation of varying chapters. In this way the children at The Salvation Army receive the very best in up-to-date and research-based education which prepares them for Kindergarten and beyond.

Ever feel like the world around you is changing too fast? The workforce feels that way.

Part of the local employment problem is that employers have jobs, but can’t find qualified people to fill them.

Compounding the problem is that there are plenty of education and training programs out there. A recent survey confirmed that those opportunities exist, but workers aren’t taking advantage of them: Survey: Low-wage workers missing out on training: HeraldTimesOnline.com.

If you or someone you know, are lacking in skills that employers need, come to the April Job Fair at The Salvation Army. Running from 1-3 on April 24th, this event is free and lets you ask questions of actual people who work at businesses such as:

Ivy Tech

United Way Financial Stability Alliance

Work IN

Work One

If you can’t get a job because you don’t have the right skills, now is the time to find out how to get those skills. And remember that it’s never too late. You are never too old.

For more information, please contact Monica Clemons at The Salvation Army.
