We finally manage to catch up with Jason Kelly for a brief interview of his practice, where he’s been and where he’s going.

You clearly love to travel, where have you been and where have you captured some of your favourite images? I’ve been to most parts of Europe, Indo, Australia and New Zealand. Europe Used to be at the top of my list, like places such as Italy, Germany and Spain but then I was just thrown back by New Zealand. It’s just a fantastic place with great people and the landscape is like nothing I’ve seen before.

How did you develop your photographic style? I can’t say I really developed it, but going to uni really opened my eyes to lots of different styles and photographers.

who are your influences? I don’t really keep track of many photographers, the odd ones would be Scott Schumann, Joe McNally, David Noton and bythom.com

Your most recent excursion to NZ, tell us about that? Well I work seasonally on the beach to earn the dollar so I always have 6 months free, so this winter I decided to cycle around New Zealand. I’ve always loved the idea of doing a long way round sort of thing but decided to take it slower so I’d have time to take photos and keep fit, so I swapped the motorbike for the pedal power. It all kind of went to plan, some days i thought i was going to cry from the pain and the constant rain on the west coast, but when the sun came out it was well worth it. In total I cycled about 2,000k as I stopped to work in the South Island. It’s bar far the most beautiful place I’ve been, and the hospitality is second to none!

What next? Well I’m moving to New Zealand to be with my girlfriend and hopefully do something photographic over there, so let’s see what the future holds.

Made with Paulownia wood and layered in fiberglass, this slick yet basic board allows riders to experience a fully controlled, smooth acceleration on the water whilst delivering optimal power for an exceptional light wind performance.

Using a traditional surfboard design which is reminiscent to the roots of Hawaiian surfing, Naish have succeeded in creating an elegant flat rocker board with remarkable upwind ability enabling the rider to experience kite surfing without the need for strong wind power.

Over recent years it has been noticed that more craftsmen are taking inspiration from the origins of their niche board sports, and are reflecting this in their current products. By reverting them back to the conventional styles and shapes of previous board designs, it has allowed the personal creativity of the rider to once again become the focal point, rather than the technological advances of the boards they are using.

Photographer and good friend Steve Coombes has been living and documenting the life he and his close ones live in Cornwall for the past few years. He shares our passion for the water and treasures the memories and moments that are all too often taken for granted. We have asked him to tell us a bit about his working practice and what he aspires to achieve as an artist.

I know you are a busy boy, so I will keep it snappy! So firstly about your practice, other than what we can see within your imagery, what does photography mean to you personally? and if you can, define how your style feels and looks to you.

Heavy question….Never thought about what it means, I guess it depends on what type of photography I’m shooting. I don’t think I could ever see it as a job because shooting surf is just an excuse to be in the water with my mates having fun so I guess it means everything as its all I ever want to do. I’m not sure if I have a style yet, I don’t think I have shot enough or learned enough. I want my images to be perfect whether that’s how sharp or well composed they are. When the boys are crowded round my camera after a session getting stoked on images it’s a pretty cool feeling but as soon as I get back home and look at them on my computer all I can think of is how I could do better so right now I’m going to say my style is improving?
Not sure if that really answers the question but I’m going to blame that on being Dyslexic.

What, when, who and where influences your practice?

What…. Hanging out with the boys in and out of the sea always gets me amped and their drive to get in the salt is pretty influential.
When….I think about shooting, wave shapes and position pretty much all the time.
Who….Its got to be the big man Mickey Smith that inspired me the most to get into it. There are too many other shooters to mention but again the boys I surf with are probably the biggest influence.
Where….Cornwall, easy as that, couldn’t be in a better place really.

Thank you Steve. It’s been a pleasure as always! We will be eagerly waiting on new shots that can be seen at;
