Justice League is the new key Blu-ray title this month for Warner Home Video, released on March 13th, 2018.

Chris Terrio and Joss Whedon wrote the screenplay for this superhero film.

This fifth installment in the DC Extended Universe features Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg saving the earth from Steppenwolf.

With an estimated production budget of $300 million, Justice League is one of the most expensive films ever made.

Justice League the Movie

As thousands around the world mourn Superman, Steppenwolf and his legions of Parademons return to Earth to find the three Mother Boxes.

Steppenwolf aims to connect all three in order to form “The Unity”, which will terraform Earth in the image of Steppenwolf’s homeworld.

While the boxes are guarded by Amazons, Atlanteans, and mankind, they are no match for Steppenwolf.

Diana Prince joins Bruce Wayne in his attempt to unite known metahumans to team up against Steppenwolf

These include Arthur Curry, Barry Allen and Victor Stone, the alter egos of Aquaman, The Flash and Cyclops.

The disjoint team plans to use their complementary skills to battle Steppenwolf, but can they possibly defeat him without the help of Superman?

Justice League – My Thoughts

Warner had pinned a lot of hopes on Justice League to deliver for the DC Extended Universe, making it a key title for the studio.

Perhaps it was somewhat due to the poor reviews, but I actually found that the movie exceeded my expectations.

I welcomed the humour that lightened the tone of the normally super-serious DC films.

Along with the cast of Batman v Superman, the new additions were pretty solid.

Ezra Miller had a somewhat delightful performance as The Flash, while Jason Momoa added gravity and respect to the character of Aquaman.

Of course Gal Gadot added the human touch and I still think Ben Affleck is a pretty decent Batman.

While it has been criticized for being uneven, for me the film was a pretty fun adventure and was well paced.

Overall I recommend Justice League for superhero and comic book fans, especially those who are fans of the DC Universe characters.

Justice League Cast, Crew and Performance

The cast includes Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher and Jeremy Irons.

Justice League was directed by Zack Snyder, who was also behind movies like 300, Dawn of the Dead, Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’hoole, Man of Steel, Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Reviews for the film were mixed, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 40%.

It was met with a more positive public response, earning an IMDb score of 6.8/10.

Justice League was probably a disappointment for the studio in the cinema, taking in $229M at the US box office, for a worldwide total of $657M.

Justice League on Blu-ray Disc

The video on the disc is an AVC 1080p encode at 22 Mbps, and is presented at 1.78:1 aspect ratio, filling the HDTV screen.

The stylistic look of the movie is quite dark and gritty, which makes it harder for any given scene to ‘shine’ so to speak.

That said the video encode is solid and delivers on the artistic intent for the movie.

The main audio is Dolby Atmos object based audio, and as always it is great to see this included on the Blu-ray Disc where studios like Fox, Disney and Sony only feature object based audio on the Ultra HD releases.

Geostorm is the latest thriller unleashed by Warner Home Video with a January 23rd, 2018 Blu-ray release.

Dean Devlin co-wrote, produced, and directed this near future science fiction disaster thriller.

The story follows a satellite designer who tries to save the world from storms of epic proportions caused by malfunctioning climate-controlling satellites.

The film somewhat flopped in the USA but had a stronger following overseas.

Geostorm the Movie

Following many natural disasters caused by climate change, an international coalition commissions a system of satellites to limit extreme weather.

Named “Dutch Boy”, the system successfully neutralizes a typhoon when it is activated by chief architect Jake Lawson.

However the Senate sub-committee fires Lawson for acting without authorization, and replaces him with his younger brother Max.

Three years later a United Nations field team in Afghanistan discovers a frozen village in the middle of the hot desert.

Makmoud, an Indian engineer working on the International Climate Space Station (ICSS), steals data from the Afghanistan satellite, but is soon after ejected into space.

U.S. President Andrew Palma authorizes an investigation, and Max convinces Jake to go to the ICSS and investigate.

When another satellite causes high temperatures in Hong Kong resulting in a firenado, Jake and his team find themselves fighting too many coincidences in their efforts to find the problem.

Could it be that a high ranking government official is behind the sudden issues with the system?

Regardless of the cause, Jake and his team race against the clock to prevent a massive ‘Geostorm’ that could wipe out life on the entire planet.

Geostorm – My Thoughts

Geostorm is another disaster film along the lines of The Day After Tomorrow and 2012, except that this new film features ‘unnatural’ disasters.

Perhaps this is not too surprising, since writer Dean Devlin is best known for producing films for the director of these two movies.

In any case, this new film is motivated by the issue of climate change, and proposes an answer to the problem, and then imagines that solution going rogue and wrecking the planet.

As with the others of the genre, Geostorm suffers from ludicrous physics and scenes where disasters appear to chase characters around.

With each catastrophe where countless people die, we are given one or two characters to identify with, who miraculously survive, in some cases by outrunning the disaster.

There is some attempt at relatable themes, like the issues between brothers and the bond between father and daughter, but it is far from enough to save the movie.

There was the theme of global cooperation, with stars from many different countries, which may well have been why the film did so well overseas.

Up front and center are the special effects and Dutch Boy caused disasters that wipe out familiar landmarks all over the globe.

I guess we can be happy that at least the White House wasn’t destroyed again in this movie.

The long and short of it is, if you like big action disaster films, Geostorm may well deliver, but you can’t afford to attempt to take it seriously.

Geostorm Cast, Crew and Performance

The cast includes Gerard Butler, Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Alexandra Maria Lara, Daniel Wu, Zazie Beetz, Robert Sheehan and Amr Waked.

Geostorm was directed by Dean Devlin, who is best known for producing films for Roland Emmerich.

Reviews for the movie were mostly pretty bad, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 13%.

The public response was quite a bit better, with an IMDb score of 5.4/10.

Geostorm saw limited success in the domestic cinema, taking in just $33.7M at the US box office.

However it grossed $212 million worldwide, which was almost double its $120M budget.

Geostorm on Blu-ray Disc

The video on the disc is an AVC 1080p encode at 30 Mbps, and is presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.40:1.

The movie has a strange, high contrast look to it, which may have been an attempt to better blend with the special effects.

However this gave some of the characters very dark eyes that appeared in most scenes to have no colour at all.

Nonetheless the images presented this artistic choice cleanly throughout, with solid image quality from this high bitrate transfer.

Science fiction fans will love the new Blade Runner 2049 Blu-ray release from Warner Home Video on January 16th, 2018.

Hampton Fancher and Michael Green wrote the screenplay for this stylish Sci-Fi thriller.

The film is of course a sequel to the 1982 film Blade Runner.

The story is set some thirty years later, where ‘Blade Runner’ LAPD Officer K  uncovers secrets that threaten the peace between humans and replicants.

Blade Runner 2049 the Movie

In the year 2049, bioengineered humans called replicants are servants and slaves in society.

Replicant LAPD officer K works as a ‘Blade Runner’, an officer who hunts down rogue replicants that have gone into hiding.

At a protein farm, he finds and ‘retires’ rogue replicant Sapper Morton, and discovers mysterious a box buried under a tree.

The box contains the remains of a female replicant who died during an emergency C section.

Demonstrating that replicants can reproduce sexually, something previously thought impossible, K’s superior Lieutenant Joshi is fearful this knowledge could be dangerous.

As such she orders K to find and retire the replicant child to prevent the truth from coming out.

Now that the Wallace Corporation headquarters owns what remains of the Tyrell Corporation, K goes there to find out what he can.

The deceased female is identified as Rachael, the experimental replicant designed by Dr. Tyrell some 30 years previous.

While K begins his search for former Blade Runner Rick Deckard, Wallace CEO Niander Wallace has plans of his own for Rachel’s offspring.

Blade Runner 2049 – My Thoughts

Blade Runner 2049 is an excellent sequel to what has become a cult favourite among science fiction fans.

I took this opportunity view the original film to refresh my memory, and the way the new film maintains the sense of the universe is impressive.

The first thing I noticed though was how huge the audio feels on the new film, adding an immersive quality on top of the visuals.

Again the visuals pay homage to the original movie, though we go out into a much wider range of locations.

The movie takes place 30 years later, and the world has somewhat gone downhill in that time.

Note that we are 30 years in the future of Blade Runner‘s 2019, which is no doubt somewhat different from how 2019 will actually be.

Nevertheless it is great to revisit this world with a strong and worthy film that captures the grit and sentiment of the original movie.

While Blade Runner fans are likely to be impressed, a more casual audience may find the movie somewhat polarizing, either loving or hating it.

For me though this new addition to the Blade Runner universe is a solid addition that I highly recommend.

Blade Runner 2049 Cast, Crew and Performance

The cast includes Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, David Dastmalchian, Dave Bautista and Sallie Harmsen.

Blade Runner 2049 was directed by Denis Villeneuve, the man behind Incendies, Prisoners, Enemy, Sicario, and Arrival.

The critical response to the film was very positive, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 87%, and an IMDb score of 8.3/10.

The movie has received five Academy Awards nominations, including Best Production Design, Best Visual Effects and Best Cinematography.

Blade Runner 2049 saw limited success in the USA, taking in $91.8M at the US box office.

However the movie was a winner overall, with an international total of almost $260M against a $150M budget.

Visually speaking the new Blade Runner film is a stunning work of art.

With distinct similarities to the original, this new movie takes us even deeper into the fictional world.

Cinematographer Roger Deakins is a master of his craft, and this Blu-ray presents his work beautifully.

That said, if you can I would seriously consider the 4K Ultra HD release for this movie.

Cinematographer Roger Deakins was brought into the project very early in order to ensure that the desired look was achieved.

Another key move was to make practical sets for as many scenes as possible, which in turn inspired the actors.

The cast and crew weigh in extensively on the nature of the universe and the design of the sets and props.

Original Blade Runner artist Syd Mead was also brought in to get the genuine look and feel to conceptual locations like Las Vegas.

All in all the film makers have put together a design that creates a movie that is a visual work of art.

Warner Home Video kicked off the year with the Blu-ray and Ultra HD release for It on January 9th, 2018.

Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga and Gary Dauberman wrote the screenplay for this supernatural horror film, based on the novel from Stephen King.

The film tells the story of seven young ‘outsiders’ who in live in Derry, Maine.

The children are terrorized by a shape-shifting being that forces them to face their own personal demons.

It the Movie

The movie opens in October 1988, where teenager Bill Denbrough gives his seven-year-old brother a paper sailboat.

Georgie follows the boat down the rainy street, when it is lost down a storm drain.

When he attempts to retrieve it, Georgie sees Pennywise the Dancing Clown in the sewer.

The clown entices Georgie to come closer, when he grabs Georgie and drags him into the sewer.

The following summer, Bill and his friends spend their time avoiding bully Henry Bowers and searching for Georgie.

New kid at school Ben Hanscom learns that the town has been plagued by unexplained tragedies and child disappearances for centuries.

The group also befriends Beverly Marsh and homeschool student Mike Hanlon.

Each member of the group has had terrifying experiences in various forms, including a headless boy, a diseased man, a creepy painting come to life, and the menacing clown.

They realize they are all being terrorized by the same entity that assumes the appearance of what they fear.

After an attack by Pennywise, the group sets out to confront the entity, but what hope to they have of defeating the supernatural creature?

It – My Thoughts

It is a very strong and provocative horror thriller, taking its place among the recent trend of high quality films in the genre.

Formerly horror movies seemed to often come with a side of cheese, making them fun for fans of the genre, but hard to take seriously.

Here we have a film that takes the best elements of the novel and presents a movie that solidly delivers both technically and emotionally.

The seven young teens that take on the evil in Derry form a bond throughout the story that feels natural and authentic.

The frights and scares feature a dynamic performance for Pennywise the Clown, with interesting and disturbing framing and editing.

While the horror elements are center stage, we also get a story of camaraderie and friendship – themes that add the depth you need to draw you in.

I highly recommend It to fans of Stephen King and the horror genre, and even for those who are just curious.

Be aware though that the film is genuinely creepy and features violence against children, which some may find hard to watch.

It Cast, Crew and Performance

The cast features mostly newcomers, including Bill Skarsgard, Jaeden Lieberher, Wyatt Oleff, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Chosen Jacobs, Finn Wolfhard and Jack Dylan Grazer.

It was directed by Andy Muschietti, who will also direct the sequel It: Chapter Two, to be released in September 2019.

The movie has a very strong critical reception, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 85%.

It was also met with largely positive public response, with an IMDb score of 7.6/10.

It was also a big success in the cinema, taking in $327.5M at the US box office.

With $700 million in ticket sales worldwide, it is the highest-grossing horror film and the third highest-grossing R-rated film of all-time.

The themes of friendship and collaboration play strongly and are covered here.

The characters are all members of The Loser’s Club, a group of teens who are ostracized from the cool crowd due to their race, personality, or physical characteristics.

The film makers arranged activities for the young cast in order to create a camaraderie that carried over onto the screen.

Author Stephen King discusses the roots of his best-selling novel in this fascinating featurette.

King talks about the nature of childhood fear and how he incorporated legends and stories from his home town.

Mamy personal memories were also incorporated into the story.

The extras certainly offer a great deal of insight into the story and the creation of this new movie version of It.

It Blu-ray – Final Thoughts

It is a very strong Stephen King adaptation that continues the recent trend of solidly produced horror films.

Warner Home Video has assembled an excellent Blu-ray release, with a technically strong presentation and an hour of supplemental features.

Warner Home Video’s big release this month is Dunkirk – on Blu-ray Disc December 19th, 2017.

Christopher Nolan wrote, directed, and co-produced this war movie that is about the Dunkirk evacuation in World War II.

The movie features a cast of largely unknown actors, along with Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, and Tom Hardy.

Dunkirk has very little dialogue – instead it creates suspense from cinematography and music.

Dunkirk the Movie

The movie opens in 1940 during the fall of France, where hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers have retreated to Dunkirk.

A young British private, the sole survivor of a German ambush, heads to the beach, where he finds thousands of troops awaiting evacuation.

Meanwhile, the Royal Navy requisitions civilian vessels that are small enough to get close to the beach.

In Weymouth, Mr. Dawson and his son Peter set out on his boat Moonstone as part of the attempted rescue effort.

In the air, three Spitfires head towards France to try to protect the evacuation from the German Luftwaffe.

After their leader is shot down, a pilot named Farrier assumes command, choosing to continue on, despite having a shattered fuel gauge.

Together these stories intertwine, as the movie recounts the events of the Dunkirk evacuation.

Dunkirk – My Thoughts

Dunkirk is a fascinating and thrilling war movie that is salient for a number of reasons.

Contrary to the typical Hollywood productions, Dunkirk doesn’t highlight a single hero’s exploits.

Rather it follows the joint efforts of an ensemble of characters who each play their part in the evacuation.

Relatively unknown actors are largely cast, with just a few big names sharing the screen time.

All in all Dunkirk is an excellent movie that draws you in and keeps the tension throughout it’s relatively short one and three quarter hours run-time.

The film makers constantly find new and better ways to involve the audience in the film, and the use of large format cameras and mostly practical effects goes a long way in Dunkirk.

Certainly Dunkirk is a must see / must own movie for Christopher Nolan fans and war film enthusiasts.

Dunkirk Cast, Crew and Performance

The cast includes Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, Tom Hardy, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, James D’Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Cillian Murphy and Kenneth Branagh.

Dunkirk was directed by Christopher Nolan, who also helmed Memento, The Prestige, Insomnia, Following, Inception, Interstellar, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises.

The critical response to the movie was very positive, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 92%, and an IMDb score of 8.2/10.

Dunkirk was also a big success in the cinema, taking in $188.4M at the US box office.

Taking $525 million worldwide, it is the highest-grossing World War II film of all time.

The film received eight nominations at the 23rd Critics’ Choice Awards and three at the 75th Golden Globe Awards.

Dunkirk on Blu-ray Disc

The video on the disc is an AVC 1080p encode at 33.5 Mbps, and is presented in its original aspect ratios of 2.20:1 and 1.78:1.

Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema shot the film on IMAX 65 mm and 65 mm large-format film stock.

As such we get to see some excellent images throughout on this Blu-ray transfer.

With solid images and extensive contrast, one can only imagine that this movie would be a great choice for 4K Ultra HD with HDR.

The main audio is lossless 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio with 16-bits resolution at 48 kHz.

While it is perhaps surprising that the release lacks Atmos audio, there was no Atmos in the Dolby Cinema theatrical release either, implying that Nolan is not a fan.

The disc is a dual layer BD50, with 32.2 GB used and is coded for All Regions.

Dunkirk Blu-ray – The Bonus Features

The extensive supplemental features are on a second Blu-ray Disc in the set, which has the featurettes grouped into five categories, three of which mimic the nature of the film.

The categories are Creation, Land, Air, Sea and Conclusion.

Creation: Revisiting the Miracle – 7:49

This segment delves into the real history of the Dunkirk evacuation, including how it came to pass and first hand accounts of what it was really like on the beach.

Living veterans of the evacuation were interviewed to get an authentic understanding of the historic event.

Creation: Dunkerque – 5:00

The Dunkirk beach location is studied, and ultimately the real location was chosen for the shoot.

This of course lent a great authenticity to the movie.

Creation: Expanding the Frame – 3:36

The film makers discuss using large format cameras and IMAX for Dunkirk.

Needless to say that there were challenges associated with the size and weight of the large format cameras.

Creation: The In-Camera Approach – 5:52

As is the ‘Nolan way’, as much as possible the action was captured in camera, with real planes and ships in the real ocean.

The actors found that this approach makes their job so much easier, with practical elements to react to.

Land: Rebuilding the Mole – 5:59

A key location for the movie is the Mole, a kilometer long break-water and pier that the larger ships needed in order to dock.

Since the original Mole has changed over the last 75 years, the location needed to be rebuilt for the movie, based on the original blue-prints.

Land: The Army On the Beach – 5:18

Casting actors and extras of the same age as the real soldiers was key to the production.

Many were unknown actors who were relatively inexperienced, and didn’t have to act surprised very often.

Old school techniques were used to replicate the soldiers for the wide vista scenes.

Land: Uniform Approach – 5:21

The costume design and wardrobe for the movie needed to be authentic, with a realistic approach taken as much as possible.

The costume department aged the clothing to make them appear to be battle weary.

At times the assistant directors and other crew were camouflaged as soldiers and were in shot for the wide scenes.

Air: Taking to the Air – 12:31

The enormous challenges of getting the planes together and shooting the aerial scenes is covered here.

Mounting the IMAX camera on the plane was a major challenge.

Many different mounts were used to set up the different perspectives needed for the film.

Air: Inside the Cockpit – 5:59

Obtaining authentic cockpit shots was a key challenge for the movie.

A Yak aircraft modified to appear to be a Spitfire was used to get in camera cockpit shots with the actors.

Additionally some shots were created on a set, but with authentic backgrounds and lighting.

Sea: Assembling the Naval Fleet – 3:50

Getting the fleet together was another huge challenge – especially the larger warships that can no longer head to sea.

A full size destroyer was found, but also half scale ships were used to create the effect of larger fleet.

Sea: Launching the Moonstone – 5:55

The hero boat for the movie was key and the film makers found a suitable boat in Scotland.

Modifications were needed and a lot of set dressing went in to make it feel homely.

A limited camera crew were on the boat to get the essential shots in the real environment.

Sea: Taking to the Sea – 13:43

Contrary to the standard method with a big tank and green screen, Nolan wanted to shoot the scenes actually out at sea.

With water movies traditionally being ‘money pits’, the team wanted to get it right without blowing the budget.

The team came up with a robust boat mounted camera crane with built-in stabilization.

Some shots were too challenging to do in Dunkirk, and an inland sea in Holland was a good substitute.

Sea: Sinking the Ships – 7:29

Again authenticity and accuracy was the goal for the destruction of the ships in the movie.

On occasion though, matching sets in a tank were needed to maintain safety and controllability.

Sea: The Little Ships – 5:57

Some of the original ‘little ships’ from the Dunkirk evacuation where used in the movie.

Here we get an introduction to a number of the ships that still exist and are seaworthy.

Conclusion: Turning Up the Tension – 7:23

Nolan and the other film makers discuss their methods to maintain tension throughout the film.

This included the music and score, as well as the visual story and editing.

Conclusion: The Dunkirk Spirit – 7:55

The film crew weighs in on the community of the team during the challenging shoot.

There is also discussion with the veterans of what Dunkirk Spirit meant to them.

Additionally there is a short segment discussing the US Coast Guard and their contribution to the film.

So with over and hour and a half of extras, this Blu-ray release of Dunkirk exceeds expectations for fans of the film.

This release includes a DVD Copy for legacy players and a Digital Code for a Movies Anywhere Digital Copy.

Dunkirk Blu-ray – Final Thoughts

Dunkirk is an exceptional movie from renown auteur Christopher Nolan that I can highly recommend.

The Blu-ray Disc release from Warner Home Video is technically excellent and features an extensive collection of extras.

The retail price is $35.99, though you can get it at Amazon for $24.99, saving 31%!

Annabelle: Creation was unleashed by Warner Home Video on Blu-ray Disc on October 24th, 2017.

Gary Dauberman wrote the screenplay for this supernatural horror film.

It is a prequel to Annabelle, and the fourth installment in The Conjuring series.

The movie is effectively the origin story for the possessed Annabelle doll.

The film has grossed over $304 million worldwide against a $15M budget.

Annabelle: Creation the Movie

The film opens in 1943, where we meet dollmaker Samuel Mullins, his wife Esther, and their seven-year-old daughter they call Bee.

Tragically when the family are changing a flat tire, Bee is killed when she is run over by a passing car.

Twelve years later the Mullins decide to provide shelter for Sister Charlotte and six girls left homeless by the closing of their orphanage.

The children have the run of the house with the exception of Esther’s room and Bee’s former bedroom, which is kept locked at all times.

One night an orphan named Janice is awakened by a noise, and sneaks into Bee’s room which has mysteriously become unlocked.

Janice opens Bee’s closet, where she finds a spooky porcelain doll, surrounded by dozens of Bible pages on the walls.

With the doll now released from its captivity, its evil forces take over the house, terrorizing the orphans and the Mullins alike.

With increasingly violent attacks in the house, will they even be able to survive the night?

Annabelle: Creation – My Thoughts

Annabelle: Creation is a fitting new addition to The Conjuring franchise with a spooky origin story for the Annabelle doll.

The film has the atmosphere and chills of the other films in the series, and the prequel necessarily has an open ending of sorts.

While the film does have its moments once the evil is released, I found the opening quite slow.

On the plus side the film is well shot with a genuinely creepy atmosphere and a number of interesting camera moves and styles.

Darkness is often used to create tension, and the composition leaves the audience wondering what lurks just out of frame.

Ultimately I felt that the film served a questionable purpose, though fans of the Conjuring franchise will likely enjoy this foruth installment.

Annabelle: Creation Cast, Crew and Performance

The cast includes Stephanie Sigman, Talitha Bateman, Anthony LaPaglia, Miranda Otto, Mark Bramhall, Talitha Eliana Bateman, Lulu Wilson and Samara Lee.

Annabelle: Creation was directed by David F. Sandberg, who was also behind the horror film Lights Out.

The movie received predominantly positive reviews, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 69%.

The film did fairly well with the public as well, earning an IMDb score of 6.7/10.

Annabelle: Creation was very lucrative in the cinema, taking in $102M at the US box office with a budget of only $15M.

Annabelle: Creation on Blu-ray Disc

The video on the disc is an AVC 1080p encode at 28 Mbps, and is presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.40:1.

The cinematography in this movie is strong and moody, with scenes that are dark and foreboding.

The film makers do an excellent job of making the frame claustrophobic at times.

Often the framing keeps us wondering what is hiding just out the picture.

The image quality is solid throughout, though there was an occasional challenge for the high bitrate encode.

This low budget horror films comes with a nice collection of supplemental features.

Director’s Commentary

David F Sandberg likes to talk about his craft, so it is no surprise to see that there is a director’s commentary.

Sandberg has a lot to say about the different aspects of the film and is quite entertaining to listen to.

He discusses the experience working on the studio lot, which was new for him, as Lights Out was shot on location.

Sandberg gives away a lot of his film making techniques and styles, which makes for an interesting commentary.

Deleted Scenes Featurette – 12:04

In a bit of a departure from the norm, the deleted scenes are presented in a featurette form, with discussion from the director.

The scenes include a number of unnecessary moments and some back story that was not essential.

We also get to see a number of elements that were eventually changed for the final cut of the movie.

Directing Annabelle – 42:21

Director David F. Sandberg presents an extensive tutorial on directing.

Inspired by the behind the scenes footage and director commentaries, Sandberg decided to use behind the scenes footage to demonstrate the craft of directing.

Sandberg felt that there wasn’t much out there covering directing, and this extensive featurette was the result.

This is worth a look if you are interested in film making and directing movies.

The Conjuring Universe – 4:51

James Wan talks about the inspiration behind the Conjuring series, and the decision to make it into a franchise.

The ties between the movies and the need for the Annabelle movies and other spin-offs are also covered.

The disc also has a couple of short films that Sandberg previously made.

Horror Shorts: Attic Panic – 3:10

The first of the two horror shorts features a character trapped in a haunted attic.

Horror Shorts: Coffer – 3:09

The second of the horror shorts has a creepy presence in a large antique chest.

All in all this is an impressive collection of supplements, especially for a low budget movie.

This release includes a DVD Copy for legacy players and an UltraViolet Digital Copy code.

Annabelle Creation Blu-ray – Final Thoughts

Annabelle: Creation is a pretty solid addition to The Conjuring series and comes recommended to fans of the series.

Warner Home Video has put together a technically excellent release with a high bitrate encode and Dolby Atmos audio.

The House is a new Will Ferrell movie released on Blu-ray by Warner Home Video on October 10th, 2017.

Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O’Brien wrote the screenplay for this crime comedy, with Cohen also directing.

The story follows a couple that, in order to pay for their daughter’s college tuition, opens an underground casino.

The film received predominantly negative reviews from critics, and grossed $34 million worldwide.

The House the Movie

After their daughter’s college scholarship is cancelled by the town council, Scott and Kate Johansen team up with Scott’s friend Frank to start an illegal casino.

While the Johansens want to raise money to pay for their daughter’s tuition, Frank wants to win back his wife Raina.

The casino operation runs smoothly until they discover that one gambler cheating by counting cards.

Dealing with the cheat earns Scott the nickname “The Butcher”, and makes the whole city afraid of his family.

Things take a turn however when the local council and law enforcement become aware of the operation.

But when the mob show up, are the Johansens doomed, or will the odds stay with The House?

The House – My Thoughts

The House is another comedy that is banking somewhat on its stars Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler to deliver.

The two play pretty much familiar characters, but even they can’t save the film from itself.

The film takes too long to get into the swing of things, and perhaps Ferrell’s comedic style is getting a little tired.

There are some laugh out loud scenes near the climax of the film, but many will have already ‘checked out’ by the time these moments come along.

Another plus for me is the supporting cast, which many familiar faces from all kinds of television shows and movies.

If you are a big Will Ferrell fan you will probably enjoy the movie, but otherwise there might not be enough here to keep you invested.

The House Cast, Crew and Performance

The cast includes Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler, Jason Mantzoukas, Nick Kroll, Jeremy Renner, Michaela Watkins, Lennon Parham and Ryan Simpkins.

The House was directed by Andrew Jay Cohen, in his feature film debut.

The movie was met with pretty bad reviews, earning a Rotten Tomatoes score of 17%.

It was met with a more mixed public response though, with an IMDb score of 5.6/10.

The House saw limited success in the cinema, taking in $25.6M at the US box office, against its $40 million budget.

As one would expect for a modern film, the image quality is solid throughout.

This behind the scenes featurette covers the pranks and practical jokes played by Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler, and Jason Mantzoukas.

The writers and director also weigh in on the cast choices which they had in mind when they wrote the screenplay.

We also get a look at the supporting cast choices and the interplay between them and the lead roles.

If You Build The House They Will Come – 13:43

This segment covers the the set design for ‘Frank’s House’, where they transform an ordinary suburban house to an underground Vegas-style casino.

Each of the phases of the casino are covered, describing the reasoning behind the different design decisions.

They also cover the fight scenes, especially the fight between the two women.

Perhaps the most fun though are the prosthetics used for the ultra-violent scenes.

Deleted Scenes – 15:43

The extensive collection of deleted scenes includes an alternative opening sequence that introduces many of the characters.

There are other cut scenes that have relevance to the movie but no doubt harmed the pacing even more.

Extended/Alternate Scenes – 1:19:54

Some thirty or more extended and alternate scenes that feature additional footage not used in the movie.

There are some interesting scenes but all in all this is a lot of content!

The rough cut of the movie must have been Lord of the Rings kind of duration.

Gag Reel – 9:57

Almost ten minutes of gags, bloopers and outtakes from the movie.

Line-O-Ramas – 8:41

Lots of improvisation outtakes featuring a variety of characters from the movie.

The House Blu-ray – Final Thoughts

The House is a mixed bag of a comedy that will most likely appeal to Will Ferrell fans.

Warner Home Video have put together a technically solid Blu-ray release that comes with a large array of supplemental features.

Everything, Everything is a movie for teens, released on Blu-ray Disc by Warner Home Video on August 15th, 2017.

This romantic drama film was written by J. Mills Goodloe, based on the young-adult novel by Nicola Yoon.

The story follows a teen named Madeline, who has lived isolated from the world due to an immuno-deficiency disease.

When new neighbors arrive, Maddy must make some choices involving the risk of leaving the safety of her cocoon.

Everything, Everything the Movie

Eighteen-year-old Maddy was diagnosed long ago by her mother Dr Pauline Whittier with an immuno-deficiency disease known as SCID.

This prevents her from leaving her home, and Pauline takes care of her with the help of her nurse Carla.

Only Pauline, Carla, and Carla’s daughter Rosa are allowed to enter the house, keeping Maddy safely sealed off from the outside world.

While Maddy yearns to see the world, she has become somewhat resigned to her fate.

Soon a new family moves next door, and their son Olly catches her attention.

Later that night Olly and his sister ring the doorbell, offering the Whittiers a bundt cake.

Olly and Maddy begin a relationship through texting and email, with the occasional sightings through their adjacent windows.

As Maddy becomes more and more attached to Olly, she has to decide whether she should keep obeying the rules, or risk it all to see the outside world with Olly.

Everything, Everything – My Thoughts

Everything, Everything is actually a pretty decent addition to the young adult / teen romance genre.

With a grounding based on a mother’s concern for her vulnerable child, the film delivers a solid story with relatable characters.

In a world where teen and young adult literature was dominated by the likes of Twilight, this film has a welcomed tie back to reality.

For the most part the story and characters come across as natural and true, and while it is a little procedural, there is the occasional surprise.

Every now and then the film goes into Maddy’s ‘imagination land’, which offers a more whimsical tone and gives the characters a better chance to interact.

While not especially fond of the genre myself, I think that Everything, Everything delivers well on its promises and is a good choice for the teen and young adult audience.

Everything, Everything Cast, Crew and Performance

The largely unknown cast features Amandla Stenberg, Nick Robinson, Robert Lawrenson, Danube Hermosillo, Taylor Hickson, Sage Brocklebank, Peter Benson and Dan Payne.

Everything, Everything was directed by Stella Meghie, who previously directed Jean of the Joneses.

Reviews for the movie were mixed, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 45%.

It did better with the public though, earning an IMDb score of 6.3/10.

Everything, Everything was a financial success in the cinema, taking in $34.1M at the US box office and a further $20M overseas, against a budget of only $10M.

Everything, Everything on Blu-ray Disc

The video on the disc is an AVC 1080p encode at 34 Mbps, and is presented at 1.78:1 aspect ratio, filling the HDTV screen.

For the most part the cinematography is fairly pedestrian, though there are moments of departure in the dream sequences.

The images are nonetheless crisp and clean throughout with this high bitrate Blu-ray transfer.

The main audio is lossless 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio with 24-bits resolution at 48 kHz.

The disc is a dual layer BD50, with 33.7 GB used and is coded for All Regions.

Trapped in Love: The Story of Everything, Everything – 5:03

A short making of featurette where the cast and creators talk about the movie.

Both director and the original novel author talk about their inspirations for the story and the film.

Deleted Scenes – 16:15

A fairly extensive collection of deleted scenes that were no doubt cut for pacing.

We get some additional insights here, mostly Maddy’s interactions with supporting characters.

This release includes a DVD Copy for legacy players and an UltraViolet Digital Copy code.

Everything Everything Blu-ray – Final Thoughts

Everything, Everything is a pretty strong contender for the young adult audience.

This Blu-ray release from Warner Home Video features a solid transfer and even includes a couple of supplemental features.

The retail price is $35.99, though you can get it at Amazon for $22.91, saving 36%!

A 17 year old girl named Madeline Whittier has a rare disease that causes her to have to stay indoors 24/7 with her filtered air. Her whole life is basically books, her mom, and Carla (her nurse). One day, a moving truck pulls in next door. There she sees Olly. Olly Bright is Maddy’s new neighbor. They get to know each other through emails. The more they get to know each other, the more they fall in love. Olly starts to make Maddy realize that she isn’t really living. This starts the adventures of Maddy’s new life.
