Easter Eggs

Happy Easter Everyone!!!

The Peanut and I did a really neat scavenger/clue hunt at the Zoo this weekend,

and had these funny, spring photo ops...

Then we have been doing a whole lotta egg dying. It was the Peanut's turn to teach Mommy a few tricks. I have never dyed eggs with shaving cream before. She had done it at school, and wanted to teach me how. So some shaving cream and some dye...

Roll the egg around, then pick up egg and clean off...

Voila, some pretty cool eggs.

We tried doing a few different techniques using wax and crayon resist,

stickers, oil, and some pink and blue dye. I really loved how they turned out :)

Then of course we needed to get rid of the dye...

Family, food, walks down memory lane and potato turkeys. That about sums up our Thanksgiving weekend. And another great one it has been. Nothing can quite say happy to be together like bonding over bird parts and tunes blasting while teaching the young ones some 'old school' dance moves, lol.

My Body Is Beautiful and Simply Flaw-thentic

It goes without saying, that everybody is unique. But when we are bombarded with images by the media of female bodies, even the most educated and informed take those images in subconsciously and it wreaks havoc on our sense of beauty. In walks Melissa King of Simply Flaw-thenic, and her desire to make a change. She has made this awesome video that I would like to share with you My Body....Finally:

Being a mother of a little girl, I struggle for this both in myself and for The Peanut. I think the world can be very hard on pre-teens and their relationships with their bodies. I myself, have found that although arrogance is a total turn off, confidence is incredibly sexy. Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder, and we truly are all unique. As written in an earlier post Comfortable with the skin you are in, I have become more comfortable with my body the older I get and the more I become me. And am learning that I am a pretty darned awesome, inside and out. Lessons learnt on being gentle with oneself and understanding the wisdom of years and passing of time has left its marks, though like those of beautiful ridges on trees, they too hold their own kind of beauty. And find myself more attracted to those that see that kind of beauty over the superficial kind. There is a braveness that one takes on, in being the trueness of yourself. Considering I am a pretty odd duck, I'd like to think i harbour a particularly magical form of courage...and a little bit of Pixie dust...

Thank you to those Mellisa Kings of the world who try to enter the media with a more normalized view of what women should and do look like.

Perspective is Everything

They say relationships are everything. The glue the binds us together. Bringing joy and pain in equal measure. And it can be hard to navigate the differences. To be compassionate, forgiving and gentle with each other. We tend to see the world through the prism of our own reflection, and assume without thinking, that people are just like us. However this is not the case. Perspective is everything. And everyone has their own. Millions of steps leading us all to the places we are now, providing us all different points of view of this world. Instead of letting this varied perspective separate us, we should celebrate these differences and use them to expand our own horizons. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" "One man's junk is another man's treasure" are all variations on this theme. Make a point to try and see the world from someone else's perspective, you just may see a view you like...

The Peanut is totally in love with crystals, rocks and fairies - of course!!! A girl after m own heart, she is equally in love with science as well as her creative side. So when she scored a crystal making kit from a friend... the little scientist got to work!

Beautiful Beads for Beautiful Girls

Spent some time with my nieces, where we all had fun creating. One of our many projects was these beautiful beads in which the girls made into necklaces and bracelets. The making of the beads was the best part!!

We used this neat Crayola Jewelry Boutique kit that made these really neat playdoh-foamy type beads. The actual bead maker, made these awesome, beautifully swirly beads.

And the girls made some really cool necklaces and bracelets.

The only downer is the bead material, stays foamy, spongy-like, even after 24 hours. I am thinking of making our own playdoh, that dries hard...

To Mothers With Love

Little hands and little feet. I am in love with these, and everything else in between. Though the Peanut is quickly becoming, not so little anymore.

I keep telling her to stop growing, she keeps doing so. In her face, her speech, and her outlook and views – these too show age. You truly see the passage of time easier and quicker, once you have children, as they display the ribbons of years before you, so evidently and clear.

Of my blessings, the Peanut out ranks them all.
I too am blessed by a great Mother, to whom I learned how to be so. The quiet, nurturing times so essential to growth and spirit, I have both received and given in a beautiful chain that I hope will continue.

I wish all Mother’s a wonderful day with family. Wishing peace, love and memories of little hands and little feet…

Colourful Paintings

My Colourful Rhino

I recently taught a paining class to a bunch of great kids, who of course produced some amazing artwork. The goal was to teach composition, colour theory, foreground and background. Using an animal or bug as a main theme, they were to split it up into segments and utilize their colour wheels (previously made) to add colour and interest. These are what the kids came up with:

Aren't they wonderful? ANd a bunch of amazing kids to boot. I love teaching kids art. They usually have a larger sense of creativity without the inhibitions society imposes on us. Sadly few of us keep that into our later years. Happy to say I am one of the few :)

The countdown begins...

Another year comes to a close. A year full of lessons, friends, creativity, happiness and joy. One more year older. One more year of watching the Peanut grow into the wonderful little person she has become (though not so little anymore).

A year of more lessons (sometimes I am a slow learner), confusion, colour, striving for balance, connections, and learning from all of my mistakes and plotting my path towards the Kelly I was meant to be.

2011 was a good year, but bring on 2012 - I feel it is going to be even better!!

Reindeer Handprint Ornaments

Ok, these turned out far better in person then the picture does it justice. We painted the Peanut's hand brown, and she made handprints on the LARGE balls. Then we turned them into reindeer - or should I say specifically Rudolphs. They had red gem noses and pom pom tails. On the back of the balls are her name and the year.

These are the finished ornaments that the Peanut has been working on, with gem ornaments on the trees, cotton baton beards on the Santas and googly eyes on the snowmen. She pumped out dozens of these...

I love 'em!!!!

And here is a funky tree we made for Gramma & Grampa. We put minilights in the holes and looks awesome all lit up. Kinda wish we had made one for ourselves...

Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree...

A little late getting the tree this year, but the important thing is we have it :) We have a family tradition where we go to Grandpa's farm and the Peanut picks a tree, and Grandpa cuts it down. Very strange this year though, because we have no snow!!!!!!

Another one of our little traditions is decorating the tree with our Santa Hats on, while singing Christmas carols. Gotta luv those little traditions that hold us tight and keep our memories strong!

Our tree is filled with decorations from past and present, many of which were gifts, many of those are homemade, and of course all of the ones that are made with love from the Peanut :) Speaking of which, I promise to post the reindeer hand ornaments that we made this year - they turned out really well!!

Wooden Christmas Ornaments

A few things we've been up to lately...

The Peanut has been a busy little elf doing up some wooden ornaments to her liking. She plans on finishing the Santa ones with cotton baton and who knows what else for the creative touches to the other ones...

We are also doing up some really cute handprint reindeer ornaments. Will do a post on those once they are finished (hoping to get them done tonight).

And I love the "Merry Christmas" Plaque the Peanut has made for our front entrance (we picked up the wooden sign at our local Dollar Store. I especially love the eyelashes she felt Santa needed to have!!
