Blue Lagoon Episode of the Weird Girls Project

The Weird Girls Project, created by Kitty Von-Sometime, visual artist, has added a Blue Lagoon Episode.
The Blue Lagoon video work focuses around rebirth and the concentration on confidence. „The women became water creatures conceptually based around flying fish. Shying away from the oberver they gradually engage and then throw themselves up from the water, exhibiting their splendor;“ says Kitty Von-Sometime.
A native of UK, Kitty Von-Somtime describes her interest in Blue Lagoon in the following way“Previous to moving to Iceland, I visited Blue Lagoon every time I came as a tourist to the country, often more than once per visit. Its a magical place unlike anywhere else I have visited and its combination of natural wonder and first person experience made it a winner. Visually it is incredibly striking and I always wanted to use it as a location in one of my films. The steam and the strange almost milk like water provided me with an enchanting place to present my creations," adds Kitty Von-Sometime. Blue Lagoon is committed to supporting art and providing artists with a setting significant for the power of nature. The Weird Girls project releases unknown power of participants. „At its core Blue Lagoon is an enchanted, place. Working with artists brings sheds yet another light on Blue Lagoon as it becomes a part of the atistic creation. „Kitty Von-Sometime‘s The Weird Girls project is an unparalleled approach to utilizing art to release the natural power within;“ says Magnea Guðmundsdóttir, Blue Lagoon‘s director of Public Relations. The Weird Girls Project is an ongoing art experiment created and produced by Kitty Von-Sometime. The project eveolves episode by episode and the particpants mix between those involved from the beginning and new members increasing with every event. Each episode is planned for about three months. The participants know as little as possible about the project, apart from the date it takes place. The main element of the project is to release the unknown. Prior Episodes include The Weird Tour or China for Converse China. Kitty Von Somtime is now working on her art in Shangahi, China, at the invitation of Swatch. Rick Kim at Blue Lagoon Clinic Searched the Internet for the Worlds top 10 Psoriasis Treatments Rick found the Blue Lagoon psoriasis treatment by searching the interent for the Worlds top 10 psoriasis treatments. He found the Blue Lagoon treatment and a little later he arrived in Iceland with his wife who stayed with him the first few days.„It is a long journey from Shanghai to Iceland", Rick said but the travel also has its advantages. „My wife and I travelled via London and used the opportunity to spend a few days in the city. This was my first visit to Europe since 1990 and it is great to be able to combine vacation and the treatment. I travel through Paris when I come back next year. Psoriasis is stress related and it is important to allow one time to relax Rick says. „The location is one of the advantages of the treatment and it is also very valuable to have the opportunity to spend time with other people with psoriasis. I did choose the intensive treatment which provides greater result in a shorter period of time than the traditional treatment. „The treatment results have exceeded by expectations, and I will be back next year. My wife will then accompany me and hopefully our son as well. He is only three months old now and is too young to travel this far now,“ Rick said. Rick was already familiar with Iceland through his work as head of the online computer game company Tian City in Shangahai. „ We focus on online games and have worked with the Icelandic online Game Company CCP,“ Rick said. In addition to the positive results of the treatments Rick says it has been nice to have the opportunity to see Iceland. " I did visit the HS Orka Power plant located near the Blue Lagoon and have had the chance to visit the local municipalities - Grindavík and Reykjanesbaer. On a recent visit to Reykjavík I had dinner at restaurant Þrír Frakkar where we had great seafood and I visited the new Harpa Music and Conference Hall where we did marvel at the architecture, " he said at the end pleased with his first visit to Iceland.

Well, I say pampering but that would really depend on whether you consider swimming in a blizzard, relaxing. The water comes from about 2000 meters below the ground where it is heated by the earth to around 37-39°C/102°F and the lagoon itself holds six million litres of geothermal sea water. What this means is that you can bathe in hot water even in ice cold conditions (in this case practically arctic), plus the natural minerals in the water (from the local magma) are incredibly soothing and healing on dry, irritated skin." "The restorative and healing power of the geothermal waters has been bottled so you can reap the benefit from home.
The Blue Flag was raised at the Blue Lagoon last Monday. The Blue Lagoon has raised the flag every year from 2003. For the first few years the Blue Flag was only displayed during the summer months but in 2010 a request was sent in to dispaly the flag all year around. To be awarded the Blue Flag, the beach has to fulfill a number of criteria concerning environmental information and education, environmental management, safety and service facilities, and water quality. We are proud to say that the request went through and the Blue Flag is now displayed all year around at the Blue Lagoon. The Blue Flag is currently displayed at 3650 locations in 41 countries.
A volcanic eruption started around 7:30 PM on 21 May 2011 in Grímsvötn underneath the Vatnajökull glacier in Iceland. Grímsvötn is a very active volcanic area and has erupted five times since 1983. The last eruption was in 2004. These eruptions have in the past not resulted in wide-ranging flight disturbances. The plume reached 20 km in height and Keflavík airport has been closed, with no flights arriving or departing Iceland for the day. However, there are no indicators yet that there will be more disruption to flights beyond local disturbances. According to geophysicists from the University of Iceland, the ash particles from the eruption are coarse, and not likely to stay airborne for long. Furthermore, the eruption is already showing signs of decreased intensity. British Meteorological Office (Met Office) also predicts the ashcloud will not reach Europe. Civil Protection agencies are closely monitoring the situation, but as of now, has decided against evacuation. For safety reasons, roads have been closed to the area and people are advised to wear masks if outdoors, and remain inside as much as possible. Often a flood will follow an eruption in this area, usually some 10-12 hours after the start of the eruption, as the area of activity is beneath a glacial icecap. Ice melts and makes it way towards shore. Scientists predict that there will be limited flooding this time, as water levels were low in the area to begin with. The department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management follows the situation closely . The volcanic eruption in Grimsvotn volcano is only localized to a small part of the country. Day-to-day life continues in Iceland. Visit the official Iceland website for more information. Blue Lagoon, located in the south west corner of Iceland, is open as usual and the eruption does not effect its operation.

Throughout the years it has been proven that the Blue Lagoon treatment is an effective treatment method, it is still being developed and is based on scientific research and the experience of the people who have experienced the treatment. The new intensive treatment shortens the traditional treatment period by half or 1-2 weeks while still delivering the same results. This is in harmony with the wishes of international treatment guests who have experienced the traditional treatment. The design of the treatment is holistic and includes advise on diet and exercise as well as sight seeing tours. The project is presented as a high quality tour providing the clients with an opportunity to experience some of the best Iceland the land of health has to offer.“

Information regarding the volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull , Iceland

Thank you for visiting our website. Below you can read infomation issued by the Department of Civil Protection and Environmental Management regarding the volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull. We also recommend that you visit the website www.visiticeland.com If you have specific questions regarding the Blue Lagoon, feel free to send us an e-mail through this link. If you prefer reading the information below in a printable Pdf format click here . INFORMATION Regarding the volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull , Iceland Latest developments: In light of the ash distribution forecast for Sunday 25 April, air traffic in Iceland is now limited. Passengers are asked to monitor flight schedules closely on travel industry web sites as the closing of the flight zones is based on regularly updated weather predictions. The local police are expecting close to a hundred volunteers in the Eyjafjallajokull area today – from rescue team members to Facebook members – helping to clean the houses of ash, to assist with farming, and furthermore to man control posts and limit access to certain areas. Although some ash mist might reach the capital area and the north-east of the country, it is not likely to cause more air pollution than a bad traffic day in Reykjavik. The Environment Agency points out that those who have fragile lungs may feel discomfort. It is not necessary to use masks, except when the ash fall is visible. General key points: The situation in Iceland as regards the volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull is under control. Icelanders and foreign guests are safe. The response by civilian emergency authorities has been exemplary. The eruption is now 1/10 of the size it was during the first few days. The eruption has remained stable over the last few days. The size of the plume has also remained stable for the past few days. Reaching altitudes around 3-4 kilometers, it is not expected to affect the air traffic in Europe. The area most affected by the ash fall, especially during the first few days of the eruption, is quite small and affects only a few dozen farms. When ash mist occurs there is no call for using masks. The eruption-related ash pollution in the capital area might be close to a similar pollution caused by traffic, and the warnings issued by health authorities will be in accordance. People who suffer from a dormant heart or lung dieease are advised to remain indoors, however. There is no indication of eruption in the volcano Katla. Daily life in Iceland goes on as usual, as the immediate effects of the volcanic eruption are for the most part localized and limited to an area in the south of Iceland. Businesses, public services, and public transport are open throughout the country. Foreign guests in Iceland, and those who are planning to visit Iceland, are encouraged to follow developments and seek factual information from the relevant authorities. Icelandic scientists and civil emergency authorities remain in close contact with counterparts in Europe to monitor the eruption. Scientists have not made any predictions on the duration of the current volcanic activities. Further Notes: INFORMATION ON THE VOLCANO AND ITS EFFECTS · The volcanic eruption in the glacier Eyjafjallajokull in southern Iceland is stable, and is now 1/10 of the size it was during the first few days. · Movements are carefully monitored by civil emergency authorities in the area immediately adjacent to the volcanic activity. Eyjafjallajökull is 120 kilometres from Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. · The response by civil protection and emergency management authorities and their experienced team of experts has been exemplary. They have followed the utmost safety measures and have provided a constant flow of information to all parties, in and outside of Iceland. · The affected areas have been evacuated and damage has been limited to roads, bridges and other infrastructure due to flooding. Further damage, mainly due to ash to nearby agricultural land is evident. Rescue teams and a large number of volunteers have assisted the farming community close to Eyjafjallajökull in cleaning up ash. · Icelanders are resilient people who have learned to live in harmony with nature. The situation has proofed stressful for the population directly affected by floods and ash particularly the farming community. Joe planned the proposal at the Blue Lagoon and the newly engaged couple shared their story with us. ENGAGEMENT - 13DEC 2008 Ever since my first trip to Iceland years ago, I said to myself - "When i find the one i will spend my life with, I will take her to the Blue Lagoon. It is such a magical place." When i got to the Lagoon, I met with a lady from the front desk and 2 bartenders from the blue cafe. I stated my intentions, and immediatley, i could tell there was excitement in the air. My plan was to propose on the viewing platform overlooking the Lagoon after we got out, and dried off. I asked the bartenders to prepare two glasses of champagne on a tray, and I handed over the ring box to dress up in a fancy presentation. Once we both came out of the locker room, they would follow about 5 minutes behind us. Everything worked out exactly as planned, and i got down on one knee in the snow on top of viewing platform over a breathtaking view of the Lagoon at night. She said yes! Many thanks to the Blue Lagoon for making this part of our lives so memorable. Think of the stories she will tell her friends! "He took you to Iceland to get engaged! Who does that!?" They also shared with us that when Joe picked Megan up in a limo at her house in New Jersey she had no idea that they were going to Iceland and that for a while she thought they were going to Manhattan.
Joe and Megan currently live together in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, and have been dating for just over 2 years; now expecting a Fall 2009 Wedding. We thank Joe and Megan for sharing their unique story with us and wish them all the best in the future.

Tchaikovsky at the Blue Lagoon

The world famous piano duo Juris & Juris will perform for the first time in Iceland on October 26. The concert will take place at the Blue Lagoon‘s renowned Lava conference hall . The successful duo has performed around the world. The program consists of selected work by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Serge Rachmaninov, Claude Debussy and Edward Grieg. The musical program they have selected is a fine mixture of romantic and impressionistic music – a selection well suited to the Blue Lagoon‘s unique atmosphere. Tchaikovsky is significant for the musical couple in more than one way. Hamsa Al-Wadi Juris a native of Syria and Carlos Juris a native of Ecuador met while both were students and the acclaimed Tchaikovsky Conservatory of Music Moscow. The couple‘s love story is mirrored in their romantic approach to the music. Carlos and Hamsa Juris hold a Master’s Degree and a post-graduate aspirantura degree from the Moscow Conservatory. Their teacher was Pavel Messner, former pupil and chief assistant to Emil Gilels (1916 1985). After completing their studies at the conservatory they settled in Finland where they teach at the Helsinki Sibelius Academy and the Espoo Music College. They are active as recitalists, chamber musicians and soloists with orchestra. Their duo activity was launched in 1983 during the Moscow Conservatory’s series of historical concerts dedicated to German piano music of the 20th century. The American composer Claire Polin (1926-1995) dedicated to them her Phantasmagoria in 1989 (published in 1993 by Sisra Publications/Arsis Press, Washington D.C.), which the couple has premièred in Ecuador, Finland, the former Soviet Union and Sweden. At the I. International Piano Duo Festival held in former Leningrad in 1990, the newspaper Pravda awarded them the special prize “for faithfulness to the Russian piano school’s traditions of interpretation.” In December 1996 they appeared for the first time in Vilnius, and since April 1997 they are regular guests at the International Piano Duo Festival Shiauliai in Lithuania. They gave the South-American première of Max Bruch’s Two-Piano Concerto Op.88a in Quito, in December of 1997 with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ecuador. Early 2001 saw their first joint appearance in the USA. The concert is a unique opportunity to experience the classical music while enjoying the Blue Lagoon’s romantic and natural setting.
Blue Lagoon - Clinic receives the Nordic Lighting Awards 2006

Blue Lagoon - Psoriasis clinic recently received the Nordic Lighting Awards for 2006. This is the first time that an Icelandic project receives the award. The light designer of the Clinic was Gudjon L. Sigurdsson, electrical technician at Rafteikning.
The lighting at the Blue Lagoon - Clinic harmonizes exquisitely with the architecture in the building, at the same time creating a warm and agreeable atmosphere. The exterior lighting is carefully arranged, especially against the characteristic lava wall that surrounds the facilities. The lighting underlines the delicate architectonic and spacious transitions from the interior to the basins outside. Metal halogen lamps, as well as the general lighting from inside, lit the surface of the basin to emphasise the milky white color of the water.
The lighting is designed in well-conceived cooperation with the architect and the owner of the building. When choosing the lighting's colour-temperature, the light designers took the needs of people with psoriasis into consideration.
By choosing cold cathode fluorescent tubes with a low color temperature of 2400°K, and a high color rendering index of Ra +90, the skin condition will appear less evident. Cold cathode fluorescent tubes are used in corridors and changing rooms but metal halogen lamps around the basins. The Jury finds, that the lighting of the facilities is thoroughly considered and prepared. The Nordic light is characterized by light summer nights and dark winter evenings. The Jury considers that these circumstances are excellently expressed in the Blue Lagoon. The lighting contains a gliding transition between the interior and exterior lighting. It also contains a successful and natural transition to the natural light outside.
The designers take both health and wellness as well as the aesthetical enjoyment into consideration. Therefore, demonstrating that they have given thought to a hierarchical construction which adds significantly to the outstanding character of the new Clinic. The lighting of the Blue Lagoon - Clinic is also a successful example of how the understanding for light sources and color temperatures can be applied to create a delicate atmosphere, making both the interior as well as the exterior a pleasant place to stay.

The blue colour of the Blue Lagoon is caused by the reflection of sunlight from very small silica molecules in the geothermal seawater. This is similar to what happens in the atmosphere where the sunlight is reflected from the atmosphere's molecules and give the sky its blue colour.
Blue Lagoon algae is the lagoon’s most distinctive organism. Iceland’s long days of summer are the algaes peak growing conditions. The algae flourishes and the green color dominates the blue one.
New scientific studies show that both Blue Lagoon silica and algae have effective properties against skin aging. Blue Lagoon silica and algae are key ingredients in Blue Lagoon skin care products .

New Research on Blue Lagoon Geothermal Seawater Active Elements Reveals their Anti-aging and Skin Barrier Repair Properties

Blue Lagoon’s research laboratories, in cooperation with research consultant Prof. Jean Krutmann, who is a well-known dermatologist and international expert in Skin Aging Research and Environmental Medicine, have discovered through comprehensive research on the Blue Lagoon geothermal seawater that extracts of its unique components have a powerful action on the skin. The studies focused on screening for active elements in the Blue Lagoon Geothermal Seawater. Microbial diversity studies based on DNA molecular analysis show that 60% of different bacterial types found in the lagoon are new species. The composition of minerals in the water is very distinct with a very high level of silica. This research program was supported by the Icelandic Technology Development Fund. This research has revealed interesting anti-aging and skin barrier repair properties of the characteristic elements of which the Blue Lagoon contains, namely Blue Lagoon silica, Blue Lagoon coccoid algae and Blue Lagoon filamentous algae.
New anti-aging skin care line based on these research results will be available early next year. Photo: Prof. Jean Krutmann presented the new research at a press conference held at the Blue Lagoon on October 19.

German study on BLUE LAGOON skin care products shows positive results

Skin care products developed from BLUE LAGOON geothermal seawater’s active ingredients: minerals, silica and algae provide positive results in the treatment of psoriasis both when used alone (monotherapy) and as a part of a other treatment methods (combination therapy). Dr. Med. Ulrich Amon confirmed this, one Germany’s most respected dermatologists at a seminar held at BLUE LAGOON - Geothermal Spa on February 25, 2005.
Professor Among, who conducted and introduced the result, is the medical director of the PsoriSol-Clinic in Hersbruck. The clinic, one of the largest of its kind in Germany, accommodates 160 patients and is specialized in treatment of psoriasis and neurodermatitis patients. Dr Amon has used BLUE LAGOON skin care products, both separately and as a part of other treatment programs offered at the clinic. Dr Amon has also used the products at his own cosmetic institute specializing in beauty treatments and therapy.
The results show that BLUE LAGOON skin care products are considered to have positive effects on psoriasis both when used alone (monotherapy) and as a part of other treatments (combination therapy). They reduce scaling and irritation and there is a strong indication that the products have preventive effects against psoriasis. The following BLUE LAGOON products were used in the study: mineral bath salts , silica mud mask and mineral moisturizing cream . These products, developed with the needs of psoriasis patients in mind, have been used as treatment products since BLUE LAGOON psoriasis treatment was first offered by Blue Lagoon Ltd.
The study focused on how the patients liked the products and what results the patients considered the products to have. These are the first results of studies where BLUE LAGOON products are combined with other treatment methods for an example laser treatment. Both results are promising and show that the products are very effective.
Grímur Sæmundsen, MD, and Blue Lagoon’s managing director said the company had been looking at cooperation with German dermatologists for a while. Marketing of BLUE LAGOON skin care products in Germany began in 2004. “We decided to concentrate on the German market before marketing the products in other countries. The feedback we have received from both the German consumer market and dermatologists is promising,” he said.

Blue Lagoon participates in an Icelandic cultural event in Paris

Blue Lagoon is participating in an important Icelandic cultural event that was launched in France this fall and will be an ongoing project until January 2005. The event, “Islande, de glace & de feu,” is a cooperation between Icelandic and French governments and is funded by the respective governments and sponsorships. The main objective is to reinforce Iceland’s position in France by introducing Icelandic culture, art and science as well as Icelandic companies.
The event has been covered in France’s largest media since it opened in September with the revelation of a large piece of ice brought all the way from Iceland’s Jökulsárlón and with the opening of the science exhibition “Islande – terre vivante” at Palais de la Découverte.” The science exhibition provides guests with an opportunity to learn about Icelandic nature and Icelandic companies. It is estimated that roughly 300.000 Frenchmen will visit the exhibition before it ends in January.
As mentioned before, the main objective is to reinforce Iceland’s position in France by introducing Icelandic culture and art, and to facilitate Icelandic companies to access this world’s fifth largest economic system. The event has enabled Frenchmen to learn more about Iceland. Educational material on Iceland has been increased in French schools, business relations have improved and the amount of French tourists travelling to Iceland has doubled since last year.
Icelandic art and culture will continue to stay visible in France until January. In addition to those who attend the event there are even more people who have discovered Iceland through the media. Further information on the event can be found at www.islande-glacefeu.com
