Running a photography business is teaching me so much about life. It’s amazing how you can gain wisdom in every aspect of life. Lately, I have been connecting with so many friends from my past that I have not spoken to since high school or college. As such, I am being forced to remember my childhood and adolescent dreams. I began to remember how I wanted to travel and see the world and how I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives and offer something uplifting to the world. So as of late, my focus has changed. Not because I wanted but because it’s just where I am being led.

In the past, I did a lot of landscape and nature photography. I’ve always loved the beauty and serenity of nature and have been concerned about the state of our environment for years. But, this year I’ve been moved to photograph people. Not only have I felt it within but people have recently began asking me to photography them. At first, I didn’t like this new change at all. I didn’t have much experience with photographing people and I didn’t want to deal with people in relation to my artwork. Nature never talks back. Nature accepts you for who you are and is not critical. It listens and always puts on the same face whether you’re present or not. And though I consider myself a pretty social person, I felt that people would be difficult to deal with subjects for my art. Now, I know now that it was only fear . . . only in my head . . . not real at all.

Yes, people can be difficult and even that is part of our beauty. We have so many ways of expressing ourselves physically, emotionally, spiritually, mentally, culturally etc . . . that magic is happening at every moment. Nature required me to look within. Photographing people requires me to look outside of myself . . . to share what I know and my abilities when before I just kept them to myself. Why did I do this? Maybe subconsciously, I figured no one would listen or no one would like what I had to offer. Maybe I felt that what I had to offer wasn’t good enough or that no one needed my “input” . . . maybe combination of them all. But I do know that in a way I was hiding part of myself and by hiding I could not share and by not sharing I couldn’t fully express love. All of this coming from someone who majored in Sociology!!! LOL!!! How ironic! But I guess that’s part of the lessons I have come here to learn in this life . . . to reach a greater capacity of love by sharing myself, my knowledge and my gifts. After all, gifts are created to be shared. If you have gift, trust that it exists to inspire, refine and heal the world.

I still desire to photograph nature and landscapes but now I am excited to have expanded my artistic vision. So look forward to new vibes!

Love & Light
Earth Shepherd

If you read my previous entry called, “I Won!”, I talked about my good friend and fellow Reiki Master Kim McLendon who encouraged me to enter the North Charleston Arts Festival. Well, I sent her a photo I took of Ric (my boyfriend, who by the way is such an excellent subject . . . “eye candy for the artistic soul”) a few months ago and she painted his portrait using it as a guide. I’m amazed at her ability to make acrylic look like watercolor. She’s got it going on!!! Not only is she a wonderful artist but she also has a beautiful spirit. Now, she’s thinking about starting her portfolio (Go Kim!!!) and asked me if I could photograph her paintings starting with her portrait of Ric. So here it is below . . . 1) The original photo of Ric and 2) The photo I took today of her painting. Anyone needing their artwork photographed??? Holla!!!

As you all may know, I have been a keyboardist in Mystic Vibrations Reggae band for six years. I am moving on and starting a position as a wellness coach this coming Tuesday. Anyway, our drummer, Andrew, got married on 5/4 and asked me to be the photographer. It was a small, simple ceremony. Perfect. Still, I was very nervous because portrait and event photography just has hasn’t been my thing. For the past 5 years the majority of my work has been centered around nature and macro. I do enjoy photographing people but just never felt the vibe to pursue it. However, lately people have been asking me to photograph them and pushing me enter this whole new world . . . a beautiful addition I can add to my photography. I have to say that I really enjoyed photographing Andrew’s wedding and it was just the push I needed. Here are a few:

Well, last week I entered the juried photography exhibition at the North Charleston Arts Festival. This is a nine day event featuring over 40 performances from local, regional and national acts, over 50 events, food, crafts, a gem and mineral show, gala and grand finale. On the way to the drop-off (Wednesday) I said several prayers and sent Reiki to my photographs. Well, my dear friend Kim, who by the way encouraged me to enter the competition/exhibition and is a wonderful painter in her own right, called me yesterday from the exhibition and said my black and white photograph entitled “Green Cabbage” won first place for the amateur/monocrome category. She took this picture from her Blackberry.

Yes! I am truly excited and inspired to pursue my photography career with even more love, passion and creativity. Thank you Kim!!!
