Mona Lisa my way

Acrylic on canvas board

I did this one for an upcoming show at the The Shoe Factory Art Co-op. My first submission to a juried show. Got my fingers crossed!

I expected this to be a mildly boring piece to do ... friends were suprised I didn't through skulls, bats or the random seahorse into it :)... but I really enjoyed it after all. I was forced to look much closer at the original than I ever had before and it was inspiring :) I'm thinking of doing the girl with the pearl earring next.. maybe.

Hey diddle diddle......

noreply@blogger.com (Starr) — Fri, 10 Aug 2012 00:51:00 +0000

This was an absolute blast to do.... first, I have made it my answer to everyone over the years who's told me I should illustrate children's books instead of tattoo.... so there :P lol. Second... the woman wearing this is so pale that the colors just glow on her. We've also started talking about a Mayan priestess ladybug scene (complete with sacrificial aphid) for her other arm.... And... has commissioned a flamingo painting (that I'm starting tonight) Wheee!

Sometimes work is too much fun to be 'work' :)

Been a while....

noreply@blogger.com (Starr) — Wed, 25 Jul 2012 23:49:00 +0000

Long story short.... bought a house, not just any house... a 1867 victorian (squeeeee!!!!) Ok, I'm very excited about my new project ( people have done nasty modernizing things to it that I must undo) so I realized the other day that not only have I not painted much at all but I have let this blog die :(

So, because I have no new paintings and I'd like to begin the resurrecting of this blog I will share some photos of my new baby (house) and some tattoos I've done recently....

See all the destroying I've been doing? Cardio and lead poisoning all rolled into one :)

A prettier view.... I have yet to rip apart the outside, but that siding will go sooner or later

These two are different angles of the third floor (formerly) maid's quarters.... and what will be my art studio. It's huge and interestingly shaped... I love it.

Pretty lily for a first timer... it took 3 hrs and she was a trooper!

This is on Nadia, our periodic counter girl, she is awesome and she lets me do wonderfully bizarre stuff on her.

Chocolate Seahorse acrylic painting

noreply@blogger.com (Starr) — Mon, 12 Mar 2012 19:28:00 +0000

This was a purely experimental painting, I started with no notion at all what it would look like... I've been told it looks like chocolate... I'm ok with that :)

Had some fun playing with the background and the eye on this one.... also wanted to do something that was a little less 'cute'.

Had a 'snow day' from work a few weeks back. Got iced in and the boss instructed me to "stay home and paint".... so I did :)

Mermaid tattoo redo

noreply@blogger.com (Starr) — Fri, 02 Mar 2012 19:46:00 +0000

Girl stopped by the shop recently with a very large mermaid piece that covers her back that we will be reworking. Not all reworks/cover ups are a good time, but I'm looking forward to this one... sometimes it's fun to be able to bring out the potential of a piece a customer isn't satisfied with. This is the result of the first sitting.

Happy little weeping willow tree acrylic painting

noreply@blogger.com (Starr) — Wed, 29 Feb 2012 19:45:00 +0000

This one's for my sweetie... Willows are his favorite tree and he likes little fat froggies. I posted a pencil drawing of her previously here.... Dryad.

Took a little break from painting, I missed pencils for a minute. I've taken up the paint brushes again already so look out for new a painting post soon!

I admit it, I'm a Predator/Alien geek.... I've even read the fan fiction :) A piece of Predator art was only a matter of time I suppose. He needs an Alien companion...

This was inspired by a late night goofy conversation with my son and husband.... ahhh my muses, what would I do without them?

I had a Raggedy Ann lunch box as a child, and that's what sparked this piece.... and then it mutated :). I'd like to find someone who could sew me one of these!

I have recently flaked out.... some time a few weeks back the internet in general was suddenly a very dull place. Update the blog? nah... Facebook? phffft.... Twitter? nope.... Did I go back to the real world?!?!? 'o course not, I buried myself in a couple books :)

I read the The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy, The Descent by Jeff Long and am now in the middle of a biography about Eleanor of Aquitaine.

I do expect that soon I'll be back throwing my two cents into the social networking pool.

I have to admit I'm a little disappointed at how many people don't know what a death rattle is... kinda ruins the play on words I've got going here. Ah well... at least it amuses me, if no one else :)

This week's #alphabeasts is brought to you by the letter "I". I've always thought of an imp as a mischievous little boy, a prankster ala Dennis (the menace) or Calvin (and Hobbes).

Another beastie for the #alphabeasts project. My husband's been chasing harpies all over his God of War game and keeps pointing out that she should be ugly. Ah well, maybe next time :)

G is for Genie, another critter for the #alphabeasts project.

This one was a bit of a headache trying to draw that foreshortened arm! And I wouldn't start requesting wishes until she's had her coffee :)

Baron Samedi voodoo doll tattoo

noreply@blogger.com (Starr) — Fri, 25 Nov 2011 13:44:00 +0000

This tattoo is a result of a silly brain-storming conversation that I don't remember much of now :) I learned some new things with this tattoo... Baron Samedi is one of the spirits of Haitian voodoo and chrysanthemums are symbolic of death and a real pain to tattoo wilted!

I got a bit silly with this one... TeeJay (my boss) helped with that, the too tiny wings and shirt were her idea :)

Then and Now

noreply@blogger.com (Starr) — Tue, 15 Nov 2011 14:31:00 +0000

Seahorses 2000 - 2011

A week or two back we got talking about the early flash sheets we'd done when we first started tattooing. This led to us digging them up to share and giggle over. My first sheet was heavily influenced by David Bollt, I just adored his stuff.

Having old work brought out to mix and mingle with the new stuff is a real eye opener. You know you've improved over the years but.... wow LOL. I think most of us artists tend to keep an eye on those we admire, those we think are so much better they wouldn't give us the time of day, that we don't fully comprehend just how far we have come over the years.... and just how far we will continue to go.

This was fun, we joked and disparaged our work that we were so proud of at the time, but there was an underlying tenderness toward our baby steps and wondrous excitement at the thought....

"Holy Crap! how good will I be in another 10 years????"

I think we all need to be able to encourage and even pat ourselves on the back once in a while so if any of you post some "then and now" pics, send me a link and I'll feature them here and give some props to your growth. :)

Another #alphabeasts....

From Wikia :

In the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game, the equiceph are a race of humanoid horse-like creatures. Unlike the centaur, which is a hybrid of a human and a horse, the equiceph is more akin to a humanoid version of the animal itself. Very little else official is known about the creature.
