Third-ranked Virginia scored the game’s only goal in the 28th minute of play then held onto the 1-0 lead to eliminate No. 2 North Carolina in Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Championship play Friday evening at Turf Field. The Cavaliers improved to 18-2 on the season and advanced to face top-ranked Maryland in the championship game on Sunday. Tyler Zeller scored 17 points for the defending national champions, while Ed Davis added 13 points, six rebounds and four blocks. The Tar Heels shot 57 percent and took a 56-36 advantage on the boards against the undersized instate Division II program. North Carolina used a 10-0 spurt for a double-digit lead 6 minutes in, then put it out of reach with a 13-0 run that made it 55-29 shortly before halftime. North Carolina led by as many as 52 points.

There was nothing cavalier about North Carolina’s play Friday night at the Dean E. Smith Center in front of 7150 fans. The Tar Heels defeated Virginia 3-1 with set scores 25-17, 25-14, 19-25 and 25-16. Carolina improves to 13-12 overall and 9-5 in league play, while Virginia falls to 10-15 overall and 5-9 in conference play. The Tar Heels, which lead the ACC in digs per set, posted a season-high 101 digs in the match.
