Malcolm White Sends Letters of Apology to Davis, Calipari

LSU forward Malcolm White has sent apology letters to Kentucky freshman Anthony Davis and head coach John Calipari following a dangerous flagrant foul in Saturday's game.

White, who was ejected from the game, said in his letters that he acted out of frustration and not malice in taking Davis to the floor.

LSU forward Malcolm White sent letters of apology to Kentucky freshman Anthony Davis and Coach John Calipari this week. White apologized for the takedown of Davis that referees called a flagrant foul in UK's victory at LSU on Saturday. The referees ejected White.

In the letters, White said he acted out of frustration and not malice in taking down Davis, LSU Coach Trent Johnson said Thursday. The letters also stated that the flagrant foul did not reflect how Johnson runs the LSU program.

The flagrant foul came with 15:24 left in the second half. It followed a UK breakout that widened a 25-24 lead with barely three minutes left in the first half to 48-30 when White grabbed Davis from behind and flung him down to prevent a breakaway dunk.

The good folks at Red Bull are asking the public to vote for former Kentucky point guard Rajon Rondo to get a spot in the All-Star Game:

As for Rondo's wrist injury, head coach Doc Rivers thinks he's getting close to making a return:

"I think he’ll be close,’’ Rivers said. "He’s getting closer every day.’’ The Celtics (11-10) have gone 6-2 without Rondo. But their late-game offense has suffered without him, and they struggled in the final quarter of three consecutive contests before last night. "You can still win games [without Rondo],’’ Rivers said. "We knew that, anyway. Also, we are finding out it is very difficult down the stretch without Rajon in close games. Because he and Paul [Pierce] and Ray [Allen] and Kevin [Garnett] have been together, you have the luxury of calling things you may not have put in this year they can run because they’ve been together. "Without him, you’re pretty basic offensively, and I think you’re very easy to guard down the stretch and that’s hurt us.’’

Ty Proffitt, Two Cardinals Earn Capital One Academic Honors

Morehead State's Ty Proffit and Louisville's Kyle Kuric and Peyton Siva have been named to the Capital One District 2 Academic All-District 2 men's basketball first team.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville men's basketball student-athletes Kyle Kuric and Peyton Siva have been named to the Capital One District 2 Academic All-District 2 men's basketball first team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Inclusion on the all-district team will move both on to consideration for Capital One Academic All-America honors.

A 6-4 senior from Evansville, Ind., Kuric has a cumulative 3.32 grade point average in business management. He is the top scorer (13.2 ppg; 25th in the BIG EAST) for the Cardinals (17-5, 5-4 BIG EAST) and is third in the BIG EAST in three-pointers made per game for league games only (2.86 per game; 20-of-50, .400). He has 35 career double-figure scoring efforts, including reaching that mark in 25 of his last 33 games dating back to last season. Kuric serves as the student representative on the U of L Athletic Association Board of Directors. He expanded his community service efforts this year, promoting projects through his web site KylesCornerForKids.com.

A 6-0 junior from Seattle, Wash., Siva has a 3.44 GPA in sociology. The Cardinals' starting point guard is fourth in the BIG EAST in assists (5.8 per game; 28th nationally), sixth in steals (2.0), and 14th in assists-to-turnovers ratio (1.60). He has handed out five or more assists in 19 of his last 26 games. His driving layup with 1.4 seconds in overtime lifted Louisville to a 62-60 victory over Vanderbilt earlier this season and that effort is nominated for the 2012 GEICO Play of the Year. Siva was honored on the preseason All-BIG EAST second team and is among the candidates for the 2012 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year.

Other student-athletes on the five-man all-district team include Morehead State's Ty Proffitt, Bucknell's Bryson Johnson and Lafayette's Ryan Willen. The academic all-district teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. To be eligible for the honor, which recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA.

Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com thinks the starting unit for the Kentucky Wildcats could actually hang with the NBA's Toronto Raptors.

Here is an excerpt of Goodman's thoughts:

Maybe I'm nuts to think a college group could hang with an NBA team, but I'm not so sure.

Check out the Toronto Raptors starting unit last night against the Boston Celtics -- and tell me you wouldn't take John Calipari's first five over the Raptors.

Not just for the future, but maybe even right now.

The Raptors backcourt was Spanish point guard Jose Calderon and athletic freak DeMar DeRozan. The frontcourt: James Johnson, Ed Davis and Aaron Gray.

Pitiful.

So maybe Calipari's current edition down in Lexington wouldn't come out on top against the Raptors, but they'd certainly give them a run for their money.

The NBA game is the best of the best - the players are simply bigger, faster and better. Kentucky's primary guys would prove that they at least belong on the same court as NBA players, but ultimately, I see no chance that the Wildcats even come within single digits.

Former University of Kentucky star and the Idaho Stampede will dawn all pink uniforms this weekend to help raise money for breast cancer awareness.

The Idaho Stampede have announced a partnership with St. Luke’s Mountain States Tumor Institute and Boise’s own AuctionFrogs.org to help raise money for breast cancer awareness. The State of Idaho ranks last in the U.S. in mammogram screening – with this auction, all money raised will be funneled to St. Luke’s in hopes of raising awareness in the state, saving the lives of countless women, mothers, daughters, sisters and friends.

The Stampede are holding an online auction on the website, which includes items from the Stampede such as merchandise and once-in-a-lifetime experiences, along with items from the team’s sponsors. LEXINGTON, Ky.- Ethan Spurlin scored a game-high 23 points and Brandon Rash added 22 of his own to lead no. 18 Transylvania to an 89-76 win over Earlham in men's Heartland Conference basketball action at the Beck Center on Wednesday.

Spurlin pulled down five rebounds and dished out four assists on the night, leading the Pioneers (18-2, 12-1 HCAC) to their seventh straight victory. Earlham (0-20, 0-13 HCAC) was led by Ryan Taylor, who scored 19 points on 5-for-6 shooting from three-point range.

Barrett Meyer (12 points), Chris Owens (11) and Tate Cox (10) rounded out the Pioneer scorers in double figures. Ashley Hatfield was also solid, adding nine points and four rebounds for Transy, who is a perfect 11-0 at home this season.

The Pioneers used a 16-2 advantage in the paint to take a 38-30 lead at halftime, but shot just 5-for-15 from three-point range. “We thought we were shooting too many threes,” said head coach Brian Lane. “We made it a point to move the ball inside in the second half.”

(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) - Senior point guard Daniel Whelan (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) scored a game-high 17 to points to lead the Thomas More College men's basketball team to a 68-57 upset win over second place Bethany College tonight (Wednesday, February 1, 2012) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.

With the win, the Saints improve to 14-7 overall and 9-3 in the PAC. With the loss, the Bison fall to 17-3 overall and 9-2 in the PAC.

Bethany raced out to an early 12-6 lead when Leslie Addy made a three-pointer with 14:30 to play in the first half. Thomas More answered with a 9-2 run to take a 15-14 lead on a Whelan three-pointer with 11:58 to play in the half. The Bison responded with a 10-0 run capped by two Brady Pacific three-throws with 7:28 to play in the opening half to take a 24-15 lead. The Saints came right back with a 15-3 run to retake the lead at 30-27 with 1:08 to play in the first half on a Whelan lay-up. Bethany closed out the half on a 5-0 run to take a 32-30 lead at halftime when Reece Mabery made a three-pointer at the buzzer.

There is breaking news from Dave Telep of ESPN.com tonight as he reports that 2013 star Nerlens Noel will reclassify and move to the 2012 recruiting class.

Kentucky is after the 6-9 star from Tilton School (NH). Noel was No. 3 on the Rivals.com list for 2013 and will surely be a top 3 recruit in the 2012 class.

Noel named 7 schools in Telep's article: Kentucky, Syracuse, UCONN, North Carolina, Providence, Florida and Georgetown. Notably absent from that list is Louisville, which had also been recruiting Noel.

The Class of 2012 received a significant boost on Wednesday. Nerlens Noel (Everett, Mass./Tilton), the No. 2 overall recruit in the Class of 2013, told ESPN.com that he will rejoin his original classification and graduate this spring. He'll play college basketball next fall.

Noel reclassified early in his high school career following an injury that cost him time. He's prepared academically and basketball-wise to make the move into the senior class.

"I just thought over the season that I thought I was getting a higher level of competition and was working on my game," Noel said. "I reclassified because I was hurt but I feel like I'm ready to play at the next level."

FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament - Draw Results

The draw results have been released for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament that will be held in Caracas from July 2-8.

Kentucky head coach John Calipari coached the Dominican Republic last season in the FIBA Americas Tournament. Under Calipari, the team failed to earn an Olympic berth, but qualified for the last-chance Qualifying Tournament.

It is not known if Calipari will coach the team again, but Eloy Vargas, Edgar Sosa and Francisco Garcia have all been associated with the Dominican Republic national team.

Group B: Lithuania, Nigeria, Venezuela

Group C: Dominican Republic, Korea, Russia

Banda Norte made a change on their roster. They invited Derrick Miller (202-C/F-78, agency: Dream Team Management, college: Georgetown, KY). In the meantime the team parted ways with Asim McQueen (203-F-88, agency: Interperformances, college: Tulane). Derrick Miller started the season with Asociacion Espanola. University of Cumberlands senior Matt Daniel joins 1,000-point club:

University of the Cumberlands (UC) Men's Basketball player Matt Daniel (Morehead, KY) surpassed the 1,000th point of his career, scoring 16 points on Saturday, January 14th against Shawnee State University in the O. Wayne Rollins Center in Williamsburg.

This season, Daniel has scored 315 points, averaging 15.8 points per game as well as pulling down 78 rebounds, 23 steals, and 46 assists as of Saturday's game against UVA-Wise.

Matt, a senior at Cumberlands, has accumulated 1,081 points, 244 rebounds, 216 assists, 78 steals, and 15 blocks for his career. Those 16 points on Saturday helped Daniel become the 35th men's basketball player to reach the 1,000th career point milestone at Cumberlands.
