RIP: BlueNullity

I have had this name for over 6 years now. At the time I had created this name it was a rather desolate time for me. The word is a compromise of a synonym for depressed, Blue, and the definition of nothingness, Nullity. This name really doesn’t suit me anymore so it is time to bury it.

Back in my SWG days I had a character name SonJoh. This was back in my animu hayday (if you can name the show you get 10 internets) and thought it was just a fun silly name. One of my friends from SWG commented that I should just change it to Sojourn since we were travelling all the time and never staying in one place long enough. I wasn’t able to get that name but I created a new character called Sojourna. Considering the travels I plan on doing this year, weather it be physically or emotionally I figure it would make a perfect name for the new face of this blog.

It’s too bad that sojourna.com was taken (bastards) so I had to bastardize the name to sojurna.com.

Expect the change over this week.

I never was really worried about my presence on the Internet and its impact to the real world. Although, considering what one friend said and some of the recent "evidence" of my past week I have locked down some social sites. I try and control what there is out there but there are other things I can not control and want to minimize any impact that may have to the random crowd that may find such things.

If you are on this site you should already have a connection to my social pages but if not just hit me up with a request. I'm just grateful for a rather common name.

Looking Forward 2009

Well so far things are off to an exponentially good year. There are a few things that I am looking forward to and its that time of year again to expect the best.

Personal

After 2008 there were quite some things that I had to mull over for what I wanted in the future. I, at this point in time would love to be able to find a new love but for now I am happy with what I have. I’ll let it step on my toes again because it really just takes to much energy to keep my hopes up for me to find love. For now love is put aside while the world continues to spin.

It has been a long time since I worked out and figure I should get into better shape, especially as I get older. I’ll be using the same personal trainer that my roommate has. After a month or so I think I will switch over to a gym membership but I always have some self-conscious nature about gyms. But really I could care less about what people think of me and more of what I think of myself.

I posted my resolution a little while back and I think it has worked a bit better than I thought. I know that head was lowered, heart was higher, and sanity… sanity was always a bit low. If you saw some of the NYE pictures you’d know it. /wink

I found some other things December 31st that I really need to fix. I get very oblivious to certain things and I really need to listen better to what people are “really” trying to say to me even if there are no words exchanged. Examples can be found all though out some of my experiences last year. At least I have recognized this and set it as priority one this year.

Some old hobbies has resurfaced and I wish I hadn’t put them aside. I had purchased my Canon XTi over a year ago and never really got back into photography cause of other preoccupations. I plan on going out more often and maybe get a group outing with other photogs in the group. I looked backed to some of my old writing and plan on getting more into that once I get thru the first half of the year.

I did get one fun hobby started last month, I love shooting. I don’t know why I never did it before even when I knew someone to shoot with. I guess I never really had the aggression needed to blow off. I used gaming for the most part as a way to get out some aggression but since that is out of my life I would like something to take its place. It probably helped my love of shooting when you get pissed off at a text message.

Events

I actually don’t have much planned for this year. I do have my Japan trip in late March that’s all ready to go. There is the cruise in May that I am still on the fence about. I was planning on getting a house this year but the way things are right now I am pushing up what the down will be and wait till mid year to see how the market is shaping up. I would have liked to have done the house in March but with the trip I didn’t want to put to much into one month. Surprisingly I haven’t planned out any new training for work but I am doing something for myself. Beginning this month I will get my study materials for MCTS: DBA, MCTS: DBD, and MCTS: BID. I will try and pump out the three tests before March. When I get back I will go on to MCITP: DBA.

I hope to have a few friends in town later this year, one will be back from Iraq in May and for her second tour we will probably hit up the town hard. The other is from MN that I haven’t seen in a couple years now.

The later half of the year is completely open to the spontaneity of life.

Work

This year will be a bit slower then the past couple of years. I have one primary project this year and from the looks of it, it will take all year to complete. It’s not too bad of a project but rather repetitive since it deals with doing the same upgrades all year.

On the side I will be diving more into SQL 2008 and SSIS and I want to get my head around this fast because it is a lot more fun than the administrative tasks. I would have loved to put up the new SSAS boxes and get more analytical time with it but that was scrubbed. Oh well there is always 2010.

Tech

Surprisingly I haven’t been keeping up with various technology that is outside the scope of my work so I have nothing to look forward to. I would like to get a Intel Core i7 in my gaming box but than I realize I have no need for that power. I’ll shrug off tech till 2010. Damn well better have something good in a year’s time.

Movies

Gaming

Nothing really since I’m not gaming as much but there are three games that might pull me from this slump.

Star Wars: The Old Republic (PC)
- I am highly doubtful of this game and would love to see just vanilla SWG back but that's not going to happen. I'll probably end up skipping this in the end.
Diablo 3 (PC)
- I am psyched for another Diablo but will it be released this year: doubtful.
Dragon Age: Origins (PC)
- Again I am doubtful of this game as I would love for it to be another Baldur's Gate experience but I always have high hopes for Bioware single player RPGs.

I do have a fourth but its a dirty little secret I’d like to keep to myself.

Short list but there is nothing satisfying about gaming anymore so the few that will bring this around will either be Bioware or Blizzard.

The New Year’s party at our house was an excellent way to wrap up 2008. I didn’t really expect too much from last couple of weeks but in the end 2008 was able to wrap the year in one expressive way.

Already 2009 is off to a great start with a most amazing story. In a pre-coital moment this morning one of the newer members of the circle was able to walk into my room, say hi, give a hug to us both and walked out with one of her friends that had passed out here last night. In the entire process I just had no real words for what my blind eyes were seeing. She is in a word crazy, but a fun crazy.

Uncle John: Next Generation

Yes little River was born today at 12:15 pm.

With that my brother Joe is now a dad, Suzanne is a mother, and I am an Uncle. I think back to my Uncle John and all of his eccentric stories. I wonder if I will have enough stories to tell River. I probably wouldn’t want to tell all of them.

I am glad that the name will continue on though. I would have been sad to see this line of the Larson end at this juncture. I know I would like to have kids at some point but I just don’t know if I would ever find the right person to raise them with. If my life is to play out like a movie it would be the beginning of Idiocracy. I now have this horrible fear though that if something ever happened to Joe’s family like all dying in a fire at his winery, I would have to curse to high heaven and kill some psychopathic alien.

I congratulate Joe and Suzanne on their wonderful bundle of slightly screaming joy. Will 2008 cease to amaze me.

So I had saved and planned a trip to Japan for quite some time and its about that time to start booking flights and hotels. I wanted to go in late March, early April to catch the cherry blossoms. So far the plan is to fly into Kyoto and spend a couple days there, travel up to Osaka for a day and then end up in Tokyo for three days to finish the trip. I would have loved to head to either Okinawa or Hokkaido but I don’t think I would have the time for that.

The big part of this trip is to make sure to experience a cherry blossom festival along the way but it is always hard to plan for when a tree will properly blossom. I hope with the three stops I will be able to see some of what makes the sakura so breathtaking.

I haven’t laid out what exactly I will be doing in each city but unlike some family trips I have gone on I will be fully spontaneous on this trip. I’ll probably find out what I would like to see but if I do or don’t it will not matter as much to me as it would have to my parents.

This is something I have wanted to do for a while and 2009 seems to be a good year to do it.

Update: Thanks to a friend of a friend I have a a better plan to this vacation and will post the itinerary later once it is finalized. Hope to have everything booked by the end of the year.
