Not the acidic honkytonk you might be expecting from our Deadly Snakes vet; Ethier seems to have spent more than a few lonely nights with a bottle, a pack of smokes, and Dylan's "Bringing It All Back Home" roaring, coming out on the other side with an excellent blues/folk/rock record only a drunk white boy could conceive. Forget about the obvious borrowings from Dylan (and even Tom Petty!)--if you are going to rip someone off, it might as well be from the best, right? We aren't talking about mind-blowing originality, here; we're talking about great rock and roll. Buy it, burn it, and give it to the masses!

Not to be listened to in your vehicle
I love the swamp fox's music and the ladies he chose to be on this cd...esp Shelby Lynne. I gave it four stars instead of five because the first time I listened to it was while driving. I do have a great audio system in my vehicle, but still it's hard to actually hear and understand Tony's voice with the mix on this cd. This is best listened to in a quieter place. I felt that they should have brought his voice up a bit for the vocals...at times his voice seems to be a bit muddy and too much in the background.

Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton was much more than the originator of "Hound Dog" - she was one of the greatest Blues singers. She could be fun and sassy, and could also be plaintive and emotional. After Bessie Smith and before Koko Taylor, there was Big Mama Thornton.

BIG MAMA THORNTON WITH THE MUDDY WATERS BLUES BAND - 1966 consists of 17 songs recorded April 25, 1966 at Coast Recorders in San Francisco, CA. Disc packaged in black jewel case; total running time 63:50. Booklet includes essays by Chris Strachwitz, Philip Elwood, and Ralph J. Gleason; three black & white photographs; and track information (songwriter credits, musician personnel). Sound quality is good.

Tracks 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7 previously appeared on Arhoolie's 1989 release "Ball `N' Chain". There are alternate versions of "I'm Feeling Alright", "Black Rat", and "Gimme a Penny". "Big Mama's Shuffle" (track 14) is an instrumental track. Tracks 11-17 are previously unreleased.

This is a really nice collection. It is a must-have for Blues fans, especially anyone who likes Big Mama Thornton

Big Bill Broonzy "Sings Folk Songs" Album Review

An All-Time Favorite
I picked up this album back in college, and ten years later, it still stands as one of my all time favorites. The song choices and arrangements are inspired (not your standard blues by a long shot), the guitar playing is totally original and exciting, and the singing is full of soul without being overdone. The older stuff of Broonzy's I've heard doesn't do much for me, although his track on the recently released "Down in the Basement: Joe Bussard's Treasure Trove of Vintage 78s" is as good as anything on the Sings Folk Songs album.

I have owned this CD for a while and I keep coming back to play it for comfort. I love his blues style and interpretation of old Vietnam war classics. The timeing and message is clear, but the songs are beautiful. He can do it all! What a musician!

A good record when he had suffered a minor stroke and hadn't regained full fitness, consequently his singing is somewhat strained and he plays guitar on only one track but he compensates by playing lots of harmonica in the style of prime Little Walter, by this legend of Chicago Blues that was a founder member of the great THE ACES. Personally I like very much the 1978 jewel record "I'm a southern man" that this "Tell my story movin' but this one also reaches great Chicago Blues moments along with all CD, all the songs have a good similar level and if you like Chicago Blues you can go wrong with it.

Louisiana Red "A Different Shade of Red" Album Review

A Different Shade of Red, my review from Barcelona, little dispointed
Before buying a record, I normally read the different opinions about it in this Amazon review's section. Usually this runs very well for me, but in Louisiana Red's `Different shade of Red' I clearly disagree with reviewer deepbluereview. According to him, it is a good record. For me it is one of the limpest Louisiana Red's recordings, too much jumping R&B/JUMP Blues instead of very good classic Blues he is accustomed to do like as "Louisiana train", "Blues evening" and "Where's my friend". This is not to say that it is bad, but it lacks consistency, specially when compared with others Red's records like `Always played the Blues' or `The lowdown back porch Blues', both very good.
Iverson Minter nicknamed `Louisiana Red' is usually a very good Blues supplier but not at all in this case.
Sincerely I'm not glad about having bought this record. I expected much more from it. I give it, thinking in the Blues, from 2 to 2.5 stars.

Let's buy this up, spread the word and encourage more!
There are very few blues guitar heroes coming out of Chicago anymore, or so I was thinking till I saw Carlos Johnson play with Otis Rush and Derek Trucks in Tokyo May 2004. Johnson has the flair, showmanship and skills of greats like fellow left-hander Otis Rush himself, though I felt more in the presence of a player the likes of Luther Allison, Chuck Berry, Buddy Guy or B.B. King in his love for the audience, his instrument and the music. Carlos Johnson, like Billy Branch, his co-hort on this album, is obviously a man who deserves more recording contracts and big tours. Buy a few more copies of this CD for your friends and get the word out so the record companies pay attention! Chicago bars are great places to see live music, but national treasures like these musicians have got to be shared with all the people. Why do all the good guys have to spend most of their time gigging in Europe and Japan, and making CDs in Europe and Japan, when they play most of their best stuff all thier lives in Chicago? Bukka White "Fixin to Die" Album Review

One of the early great blues singers
He was born Booker T. Washington White (Bukka became his name due to a mistake in one of his recording sessions many years later) in 1909, and had a career lasting until 1977. His first recording session was in 1930; he didn't make much of an impression since he did not record anything else until 1937. This CD features his early recordings, made in 1930, 1937, 1939, and 1940.

The liner notes identify him as one of the early greats, the end of the line of blues players originating with Charley Patton and Son House (with Tommy Johnson thrown in for good measure). From this early generation came later well know blues players such as Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters.

Anyhow, what about his craft and his art? Three cuts illustrate:

"The New Frisco Train" comes from his first recording session. Early on, he did railroad songs as one of his genres, and this song comes from that set of works. He shows very good guitar playing, comparing very favorably with the guitar work of others early blues singers. His blues voice is mighty fine, too. The song's focus is trains. There is a second vocalist, identified as "Miss Minnie." The back and forth banter between the two works nicely. The recording quality isn't great, but it's better than some other early blues recordings.

"Shake 'em on down" is a 1937 cut, from his second recording session. This is much more blues oriented than the song previously mentioned. Again, nice guitar work and some good blues vocal wailing.

"Fixin' to Die" was later covered by Bob Dylan, according to the notes. There is the recurring line:

"I know I was born to die. . . ."

Good guitar work again and fine singing. He's backed on washboard by "Washboard Sam."

This is the first work of Bukka White that I have ever listened to(if my memory is correct). And I'm pretty happy with what I have listened to! White is an important part of the early blues, ranking with some of the other greats of the era.

This late-'70s German recording by one of the blues' finest musicians is being released in the U.S. by Evidence music, marking the first time that No More Whiskey has been available in the United States. Recorded only a few years before Williams's death, in 1982, this CD is an excellent example of his later work and, in fact, of his music overall. L.V. Banks "Ruby" Album Review

Another winner in Wolf's Chicago Blues Session series
I saw L V Banks the first time I went to the legendary Checkerboard Lounge in Chicago, the last of the old-time South Side blues clubs. I was mesmorized by the intimate surroundings at the place and just the overall experience of it all; so much different (then, anyway) than the yuppie-infested blues bars downtown. Which, of course, made this an easy sell for Amazon. But although Banks may not be well-known outside Chicago, this is pretty good Chicago slide-guitar blues, aided by Allan Batts' piano in the studio recordings. His voice may remind some people of Taj Mahal's. Best tracks are "Hard to Love A Woman", "I Love My Guitar" and "Pipe Layer". If you like Chicago blues, this album is recommended. Chicago-based Wolf Records, in fact, has a very comprehensive set of CDs called "The Chicago Blues Session" featuring local artists, of which this one is part, that you may want to check out if you're really passionate about Chicago blues.

Howlin' Wolf's voice was so gravelly, it was said he gargled nails. The Tail Dragger sounds like he starts each day with thumbtacks. But he is more than Wolf lite; the Tail Dragger is his own artist. With several guests from the contemporary Chicago blues scene--Rockin' Johnny, Billy Branch, Eddie Shaw, and Jimmy Dawkins among them--his music is solidly contemporary. His sound was groomed in dark Chicago clubs, and he draws out his material with plenty of club-inspired jamming. Uptempo Blues/R&B CD
Robert Ward was the leader of the Falcons (Wilson Pickett's original group). Ward resurfaced after years of absence in the early 90's. New Role Soul is his newest release and a great CD to get acquainted with Robert Ward. New Role Soul is more R&B than blues, however this is R&B much like Little Milton or some of the Stax recordings in the 60's. Ward as always offers a very distinctive voice as well as guitar sound. The sound is full thanks in part to the B3 organ of Kevin McKendree which is a nice accomplice to Ward's guitar playing. The songs are a mix of new and some lesser known R&B classics. The last song on the disk is "Somethin Funky's Goin' On". Yes Robert there sure is and it is New Role Soul.

The real deal
I had never heard of James Peterson before, but this was the CD that his son Lucky was selling at his latest gig at Biscuits & Blues in San Francisco. I took it home and, on the strength of a great show, bought a couple of JP's CDs on Amazon. I got to tell you, though, "If You Can't Fix it" is my favorite. James' voice isn't as strong as it once was, but he's singing several of his own tunes (with Lucky playing organ) and he uses what he's got to great effect. He can still hit the notes he needs to, and his material is top-notch. Check out the title tune, and "Too Young to Die." These are the real blues. They could have been written yesterday, but the echoes go back a long time.

He shows his skills on such songs as "I Can't Hold Out," ""Blue Shadows Falling," "She's Fine," and "Call My Job."

Seals would succumb to diabetes years later, but would leave a legacy of great blues music. This record does nothing to dispel that notion.

John Lee Hooker Jr. "Blues with A Vengeance" Album Review

How refreshing!
Right from the start I would like to make clear that this is "a traditional blues album". However this is a traditional blues album with something different in it. John Lee Hooker JR., as mentioned also in the review below, doesn't sound anything close to his father, his style is completely different, very close to the tradition of Chicago style but with something more add in the mix that make this CD sound really refreshing and innovative if you will. He has a great voice and also, and equally important, a very personal way of singing. As he states on the linear notes "we went out of bounds, beyond limitation, broke barriers, and broke the blues rules in working on this CD". And, from my point of view, they did it, and they did it also very well. The Final result is remarkably good: a very "innovative" traditional blues album. Most of the songs in the album include a powerful horn section and a very good guitar work from John Garcia who worked with his dad for many years. It is really a pleasure to listening to this CD and I really hope that it will have the attention both from public and critics that it deserves.

You may want to disregard the atrocious spelling, lack of respect, and dismissive comment about Chess from another reviewer. This is great music. We all know that. JUST BUY IT. For more information, however, just ask Etta James or Buddy Guy what they think about Leonard and Marshall Chess. Sure, they weren't perfect, but picture the world without all of the artists they DID record.

Heres British Mississippi Delta bluesman "Bottleneck Bill "The Most Downhome Sound Around". Bill who was born in Eastbourne Sussex England in 1947 has been playing blues since the early 1960's. The guitar he has used for over 30 years is a Hofner which after an accident involving partial asphyxiation from dry cleaning fumes from clothes he had recieved back from a dry cleaners in the seventies that left him unable to work or perform for several years that to this day has rendered his right (strumming) hand partialy parylised he spent his time customising his guitar by fitting a fibre glass back to it a giving it a paint job and experimenting with an able bassmaker a device designed to fill out his sound an idea he got from the celebrated bluesman Jesse "Lonecat" Fuller.Bills a man at home with a soldiering iron in his hand and his experiments at electronicaly and mechanicaly tweaking his guitar and his sheer persistance at regaining his ability to play coupled with his near photographic memory of songs has made him the unique performer he is. Like myself Bill is amongst Big Joe Williams most ardent admirers and is about the only blues revivalist I ever heard who dares to tackle the songs of Mississippi Big Joe Williams,Big Joe was a one off and in my opinion the greatest of all the country bluesmen,and there isnt ever going to be anyone who can realy play and sing like him,but Bill in my opinion anyway realy goes someway to capturing the feel and sound.Here's Bill giving us his very memorable rendition of Big Joe's "Hot Dog Blues" Bill was recording this with blues photographer and founder of the short lived sixties British country blues reissue label "Spokane Records" Les Astrella" present who hadnt seen Bill play since the late 1960's,and was blown away to see him in action giving his very authentic renditions of so many classic country blues numbers from the great exponents of the art long gone. Les was the photographer who produced the photos for the sleeve cover of the LP Son House at the 100 club. Bill has told me that he played there that same night and Son House was very complimentary of his playing. I'm a big fan of Duke, and particularly of his T-Bone stylings (as I play that way myself), so this album was a no-brainer. The album is superbly recorded and engineered. Duke is the master of that big arch-top guitar tone that is so definitive of the T-Bone sound. His vocals are strong, and the band is the best in the known blues world. Just can't love it. It isn't that it isn't world class Chicago blues harmonica, but that it's not as good as anything James Cotton did before throat cancer took his voice, because it doesn't have his powerful, downhome vocals and "Got to th'ow down right now" phrasing alongside the harmonica wizardry. Instead, it has a touch of what must have been extremely painful Cotton vocals and a lot of big name guest singing that, to this critic, puts James Cotton in a sideman role he is too good for.
Honor James Cotton. Honor him by buying the string of wonderful records he did when he was a complete superstar.

Magic Sam "The Magic Sam Legacy" Album Review

A fine collection of outtakes and alternates
This album brings together 13 outtakes from the "West Side Soul" and "Black Magic" sessions...those two being the only regular studio albums issued by Magic Sam during his lifetime, of course.

The overall quality is not quite as high as on either of those two albums, but there are still plenty of gems here.
Sam's performance of "I Feel So Good" (which is actually John Lee Hooker's "Boogie Chillun") and Jimmy Rogers' "Walkin' By Myself" are probably something of an acquired taste, and you have to be very fond of Magic Sam Maghett not to prefer the originals.
But his rendition of "Hoochie Coochie Man" packs a lot of punch, and "Shakey" Jake Harris supplies excellent, gritty harmonica. Other highlights include a bouncy "That Ain't It", Sam's own "What Have I Done Wrong", an alternative "That's All I Need", and a spirited take on the R&B gem "I Just Want A Little Bit".

Several of these songs appear in slightly different versions on "West Side Soul" or "Black Magic", and that's where newcomers should start. But more serious fans will certainly want to pick up this fine companion volume as well, not least for those songs which are not available anywhere else.
"Blues For Odie Payne" is one of them, a soulful instrumental with a wonderful piano part by the great Lafayette Leake, and the slow burner "Keep On Doin' What You're Doin'" is another.
Sam was an excellent vocalist, and an inspired lead guitarist, and this is great stuff.

I saw Willie "Big Eyes" Smith in a room where the audience totaled two people (four if you count the bartender and waitress.) He played two long sets, indulged most of our increasingly drunken requests, and patiently answered our questions during the set break. This album is meat-n-potatoes Chicago blues like they used to make when drummers knew how to play a shuffle and 4 minute songs weren't loaded with 3 minutes and forty-five seconds of frenetic guitar work. Recommended.

Love, Murder and Right Wing Politics
Slide twelve-string blues is just something you have to hear to believe and Paul Geremia aces it. The title cut 'Meet me in the bottom' alone is worth the price of the CD. There's nothing else like it and I would give it six stars but for the "New Bully of the Town' cut which is just a right wing, anti-government pro-Waco wacko track. The music is fine, mind you, but the politics is offensive, to me, at least. But overall, a great CD, and a great addition to any collection of acoustic blues' modern masters.

John Mooney "Comin Your Way" Album Review

Version 1 of the JM Band and the BEST!
John Mooney is from my hometown, Rochester, NY. He left for the greener blues pastures (couldn't resist that!) of Louisiana a few years back, but not before creating a huge entourage of fans who followed him to every bar he played. I was fortunate enough to have danced away the spring of '78 to the very tunes on this CD at places like the Crazy Horse Saloon and Orange Inn . Ahhh, I digress into melancholy; enough of that.This is the old style John Mooney: finger-picking National steel with pickups, Son House (his mentor) stuff. A couple of the sidemen are also worth mention: the astounding acoustic bass is played by Brian Williams who is still on the local scene with Bobby Henrie and the Goners and the unbelievable acoustic piano is played by Bob Cooper whose whereabouts is unknown (sadly missed).When John came back from Louisiana for a visiting gig, he had gone electric, turned a blues corner so to speak. That music is also great, but this album is the real deal, the John Mooney Band that created memories that hundreds of now middle-aged sonsofbitches like me will take to their graves as bright lights of a bygone era.Move the furniture out the way, throw a bucket of ice on a case of beer, and call in the neighbors: you gonna love this one!

Still Waiting
I bought this with a lot of anticipation, but it seems like Kelley has played it safe with what sounds like a collection of pop/blues/soul tunes that don't have a lot of connection to each other. From the credits it looks like she is moving toward the old school blues/soul production with this Nicholson guy that does Delbert. Having been a fan of Kelley's from way back, it breaks my heart to see folks like Susan Tedeschi getting all the fame and fortune while Kelley struggles to get the recognition she deserves. I'm guessing that until Kelley moves toward the more cutting edge song selection and production circles that Susan has access to, things will remain pretty much the same. I am keeping hope alive and waiting for Kelley to find the right producer and/or manager who can help her get over the hump and be the star she deserves to be.

Story of a good blues man
The life stories of blues musicians are often as bittersweet as the music they played. L.C. "Good Rockin" Robinson is a good example. Born in southeast Texas in 1918, L.C. and his brother A.C. travelled and played the blues around Texas in the 1930's, but never made it big. L.C. served in World War II and then came west to join his brother, who had settled in the San Francisco Bay area. L.C. worked in a laundry and played and sang the blues when he could get a gig. He played fiddle and steel guitar, which he held in his lap. L.C. was discovered by Arhoolie Records in the early '70's, a few years before his death and he cut this album. The album is a little uneven. Four of the last 6 songs are gospel numbers in which he duets with his brother, A.C. There's nothing wrong with mixing the two, but the quality of the blues cuts is clearly superior --- especially the first 6 cuts on which L.C. is jointed by "Pinetop" Perkins" on piano and Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica. Some of these songs are brilliant, like "Ups and Downs", which is also featured on the Arhoolie Anniversary Album. If only he had been discovered at the right time, L.C. Robinson might be remembered as one of the all time greats of blues.

Mel Brown "Neck Bones and Caviar" Album Review

Neck Bones & Caviar, my review from Barcelona
I have read some professional reviews which takes this 'Neck Bones & Caviar' to be the best of Mel Brown's records, but personally I think of 'Homewreckin' as better. Nonetheless in both records Brown's performance is on a very good level, in my opinion and in that of the great Joe Louis Walker, who says that Brown is probably one of the greatest guitar players in any style. I find two themes in this `Neck Bones' that are not on the same level as the others: Z.Z.Hill's `You' re the one' and Ray Charles's 'I believe to my soul', both a little boring.
Also the record features a not very inspired Jim Bodreaux on drums. He takes some themes away from the Blues and gives them a rhythm somewhat "funky" as in Mel Brown's 'Summer magic', and still more noticeable in a slow classic Blues as St. Louis Jimmy Oden's 'Going down slow'. In general it is a good disk, with highlights as Muddy Water's 'Woman wanted', a perfect version of Allen Toussaint's 'Get out my live woman', the original 'I want to hold onto you, Baby' and 'Blues on the green', a great Blues, a very good version of 'Lord have mercy' where Brown plays the piano really well and closing the LP a version of John Lee Hooker's 'I' m in the mood' which begins somewhat enigmatic and finishes as a true piece of Blues. I give it between 3 and 3,5 stars.

Great guitar work
I saw Paul at house party in California several years back and bought this CD from him. I give it 4 stars because some of the production is iffy, but there is no doubt about the man. The rhythm of the blues guitar, mello voice, and great lyrics make him a performer to watch. "Red Room" is a classic and worth the price of the CD.

"Strawberry Letter 22," as I stand corrected, is the correct title (just listen to the lyrics contain within this track, it's not "Strawberry Letter 23"); I just found out that "Shuggie" is the original author for this song, I guess I missed that one...

His song inspired was covered by The Brothers Johnson's hit makers of (A&M Records Label) da "FUNK" music... Thank god for the evolution of music...

Technique Although Landreth is an extremely competent guitarist in the conventional form, it is his slide playing that he is most well known for. He has developed a technique where he also frets notes and plays chords and chord fragments "behind" the slide while he's playing. He has managed to perfect this form of playing like no other. Many a well known guitarist has left his shows shaking his or her head in amused disbelief. He plays with the slide on his little finger as most slide players do. It would be basically impossible to play this style with the slide on any other finger. Sonny Landreth is one of the most unique guitar players on the planet. He has developed an original style that has not been duplicated. His roots are found in the Blues and Zydeco of the Louisiana/Mississippi region, and he took those roots for a ride.Louisiana's Guitar Player: Born in Mississippi, relocated to Lafayette, Louisiana, Sonny Landreth was immersed in the great Swamp-pop and Zydeco music of the area. I bought this CD originally to learn some blues piano riffs, and I've not been disappointed. As the title indicates, this is pure piano without accompaniment of any kind. It sounds as if Mr. Krown walked into the studio, said "Let's do this," and started tearing it up. Raw and dirty. If you like piano blues at all, you've got to buy this. You won't be sorry.

A Very Nice Match Up!!!
Johnny Shines and Snooky Pryor are two veteran acoustic Bluesmen who have been making great music for over a hundred years betwwen the two of them. This CD is no exception. Together the two really shine.The music is straight-forward Delta Blues with Shines on vocals and Pryor on harmonica. With the help of John Nicholas on guitar this recording will be a delight for any Delta Blues fan. The music is mostly Blues standards with a few Shines and pryor originals thrown in for good measure. The overalll feeling is nice and comfortable.

A Terrific Album
It is a shame there is only 1 CD from this bunch, a studio album with a decidedly live feel to it, KING DOLLAR is one great collection of blues. Probably the weakest cut(s) is (are) the Stones cover(s) and they are not bad. Some great takes on Robert Johnson material as well as orginal songs. Great, great slide playing and blues harp drive this. A definite swamp feel to the material - if you like the blues you will LOVE this.

Best CD of 2004 (So Far)!!!
What a great disc!!!I hadn't heard of Ellis Hooks, until I read the review of this CD in Tracks. I was intrigued and thought I'd order it from Amazon. What I got in the mail a short time later was nothing short of phenomenal.Ellis combines soul, blues, R&B (REAL R&B-not hip-hop), and a little country twang into a compelling package of highly original and memorable songs. The album starts very strong with "It's Going to Take Some Time" a stirring and moving ballad, and continues with "Forty Days and Forty Nights" and "Can't Take This No More" leading into the bluesy stomp of "Sweet Justina." These four numbers are probably the strongest album opening I've heard in a some time. The album doesn't end there though. Continuing on through the inspirational "Hand of God" and the ironic "She Locked the Door," Hooks' songwriting impresses throughout the entire album. Is Hooks the proverbial "best singer-songwriter you've never heard of?" Yes. Who does he compare to? Impossible to say. If you put a gun to my head, I'd say a combination of Otis Redding and Bob Dylan, but I prefer to let this disc spin and just enjoy. Buy this disc; it's the best record yet put out this year and hopefully heralds the arrival of a new take on the classic American singer-songwriter.

Ellis Hooks Until the arrival of Ellis Hooks on the 21st century blues and soul scenes with his now-signature meld of R&B, blues and Southern gospel, it seemed that the great stories surrounding these musics had already been told and passed into antiquity with the great names assigned to them -- Otis Redding, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, James Carr, and Sam Cooke, to name a few. Not so. Ellis Hooks was born in Bayminette, Alabama, between Birmingham and Montgomery. He is the 13th of 16 children born to sharecroppers. According to legend, he didn't own a pair of shoes until he was eight. Hooks began his singing career as a child leading the church choir, but fell under the sway of the soul, blues, and country music his older brothers listened to on the radio. The voices of Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, and Little Milton were sheer enchantment for the youth. At the age of 15, Hooks decided to seek his fortune as a singer and left home. He hitchhiked across the United States, working odd jobs, and playing and singing for anyone who would listen on street corners, and eventually landed in New York. In the city he slept where he could, played the occasional club gig on Bleeker Street, and spent many days singing in Central Park. In the storied way Hooks' life has unfolded, Diana Ross heard him in Central Park and, taken with his unique vocal style which blends the soul croon and blues growl, offered him a recording session at the famed Power Station studio. Hooks balked and never showed up, later claiming that he wasn't ready and his songs weren't developed enough. Hooks wasted no time in making his next career move. He earned enough for a one-way trip to Europe and spent time living in Paris, Amsterdam, and in Milan, where he played tube stops and street corners. It's a time he looks back on fondly: "European audiences receive you; they're open and they treat you like family. In the United States you have to fight for every audience member," he told this journalist in an interview. Hooks returned to New York in 1995 where lightning struck for the second time upon meeting producer Jon Tiven. Hooks accompanied a young singer as a chaperone to an audition at Tiven's studio. While the producer was unimpressed with the singer's audition, he challenged Hooks, asking him what he did. Hooks, miffed by the dismissal of his friend, told Tiven he sang. Tiven offered the young man a guitar and a chance to prove it, and a partnership was born. Hooks and Tiven began a working partnership that has yielded no less than three fine recordings. Undeniable was issued on the European Zane label in 2002. Using a backing band under the directorship of Tiven, who plays guitar, keyboards and alto saxophone, and his bass-playing wife Sally, Undeniable caught the ear of critics all over Europe, Time Out, in the U.K., acclaimed it the soul album of the year and it earned Hooks the headline spot on the BBC's World Music Festival on New Year's Day 2003. Hooks toured incessantly,playing club gigs, and he won an opening slot for Terence Trent D'Arby, where he played for over 40,000 people. Hooks also won the admiration of Carla Thomas and appeared at both the Montreux Jazz Festival and Poretta Soul Festival as her special guest. Hooks has issued two more albums. First, there's the rollicking Up Your Mind, on the Evidence label; it was released in late 2003, and garnered Hooks a W.C. Handy Award nomination. March 2004 saw the release of the stunning Uncomplicated (entitled Hand of God in Europe) on the Artemis label, and it gathered a storm of notoriety and praise on both sides of the Atlantic from critics and fans. An album project Hooks worked on in the 1980s, The Godson of Soul, was reissued by Evidence Records on CD in 2005, followed on the label by a new album, Another Saturday Morning, in 2007. Hooks is the true continuum in the celebrated Southern traditions of soul, blues, and gospel; his voice, while reminiscent of some of the greats, is nonetheless his own, and his phrasing is a trademark. The Legend Continues
The legend has not only returned, he's here to stay! This outing has Jody back with his wonderful guitar playing and some great songs - all but one original.

Jody opens with the title track and the first thing you hear is a haunting minor chord that really grabs your attention - reminiscent of something out of a Sergio Leone movie. The lyrics tho' not that original are still interesting, e.g., "My name is Jody and it's always been, but I could've sworn I heard her call me Fred". Yeah - old line, but still good for a chuckle.

Jody also has a couple of buddies along for the ride. Robert Lockwood, Jr. joins Jody on "I Can't Get You Off My Mind" and "I'll Be There", both classic shuffles. Lonnie Brooks chimes in on "She's Got A Spell On Me" (and, being from Louisiana, Lonnie knows all about spells!). He returns with a mournful wail on another duet, "Someone Else".

Additional highlights include "Don't Get Caught In My Bed", a slow blues that just simmers and is as down and dirty as it gets. I really like this song because -- well, never mind, long story. Then there's "Young Men Don't Know". You young guys should listen up here. Jody's got real good advice for you.

The one non-original is "Nothing Can Change This Love", written by Sam Cooke. Sam knew how to write ' em, didn't he? Jody does such a nice job with this song.

I think all you Jody Williams fans are going to like this CD and if you're not a Jody fan, check it out anyway. You just might change your mind.

Father & Son Team Up
This early 90's recording of Carey and Lurrie Bell in Scandinavia has finally seen the light of day, and it's long overdue.

The Bells lock right in with each other on a number of tunes, including "Stop Running Around," "Keys to the Highway" and "Five Long Years." On the latter, Carey makes sure people know Eddie Boyd wrote this one, giving props to an old friend and underrated musician.

Lurrie has had his personal difficulties in the past, and some have said you'd think he didn't know what he was doing with a guitar some nights. This time, he's right on it, with some excellent acoustic work and Carey's harp wizardry.

The arrangements are simple and sparse, but that's how it all began. This is an excellent bit of their history.

Eric Bibb "Friends" Album Review

Just a wonderful album
This is my third Eric Bibb album if you count the one he did with Maria Muldaur and Rory Block. What a talented man he is! He knows his way around a guitar and his velvety smooth vocals are a treat. Anyone into acoustic blues music should really add him to their collection. Especially Chris Smither and Kelly Joe Phelps fans. As you probably know or guessed, this album includes many of Eric's "Friends". Some of the people at the party include Odetta, Guy Davis, Taj Mahal, Martin Simpson and Harry Manx. I love Eric's version of Guy Clark's "The Cape" with Martin Simpson's lovely finger picked guitar behind him. You also need to hear his duet with Odetta entitled "Taint Such a Much". I'm just barely scratching the surface here. There's lots to love on this album and I don't think there's a single mis-step. Albums that you can say that about are gew and far between these days.

Muddy Waters "Feel Like Going Home" Album Review

Good collection of early Muddy, but....
...but, well, the Complete Blues label, which issues this new series of digipacks featuring artists like Muddy Waters, Elmore James, Leroy Carr and many more, is taking advantage of certain European copyright laws, so the morality of buying from them is dubious. The Muddy Waters CDs from MCA-Universal (the successor to the Chess label) generate royalties to Muddy's family, and also tend to be more coherent thematically, so I'd go for one of their excellent Muddy-compilations instead.

Anyway...this is a collection of Muddy Waters' earliest sides, a couple of them non-commercial recordings made at Stovall's Plantation in the early 1940's. There are some genuine classics here, like "Gypsy Woman", "I Can't Be Satisfied", "Train Fare Home", and "Rollin' Stone", and the mastering is generally excellent.
Yadayadayada. I still think you should buy the MCA/Chess-albums.

From all the CD's that Chick has made this one is really GOOD. The production is excellent. Two of my favorite songs are. "Savannah Lee" and "I Ain't Looking For Much Crowd" but all the songs are good. Best of all they are clean!!!

The highlight of my recent trip to Memphis was seeing Preston Shannon perform at BB King's on Beale St. Preston and his band put on an impressive performance, capped by a blistering 10-minute version of Prince's "Purple Rain". The version of the song included on this CD pales in comparison to the live jam, but it is a great take on a classic tune. The rest of the album features soulful performances, showcasing Preston's BB-esq guitar chops. A real find.

A brilliant cd! Each time I listen to it, I recall going with my best friend, Joannne (where are you, girl?) to see The Holmes Brothers wow a crowd of music lovers in Portsmouth, NH in the early 1990's. Their harmonies and sense of joy were palpable; we danced to some amazing music that night and Joanne became an instant fan. This cd is a wonderful mix of blues, soul, gospel, and country and features Gib Wharton on steel, who for several years was an integral part of the band. Get the cd for yourself and a friend, and see the band when they hit your town.

Ain't your daddy's blues
This is not your typical blues album. It's funky, souly, and most importantly, it's bluesy. Jimmy's sound is much more refined, in the sense that there's texture and layers in the music, if you know what I mean (I hope). The guys playing have the talent to take the music into uncharted territory, and at first you may not think you're listening to the blues. But once you hear Jimmy, and the things he's singing, you'll know it's the blues.

Lavelle White "It Haven't Been Easy" Album Review

A unique voice and a pet project
Recording Lavelle White is obviously a pet project for Clifford Antone, who co-produces this album. It's a follow up to her now deleted "Miss Lavelle" album for the same label.It has to be said at the outset that you either like her voice - or you don't! I do. With a basic band of Riley Osborn on keyboards,Larry Fulcher on bass and George Rain on drums, plus Clarence Holliman and Derek O'Brien on guitars every track has something extra added to its mix, usually from the Antone's "house band" (Kaz Kazanoff on saxes for example). The album has more of Ms White's own compositions than the last album.Favourites for me are the title track and "Automatic Love". However the two real standouts are O.V.Wright's "Don't let my baby ride" and a thunderous version of Eddie Floyd's "I've never found a man to love" If you're looking for a soulful alternative to what you normally listen to,this could be it. It'd be well worth the wait!

Taj Mahal "Blues with A Feeling" Album Review

Excellent....with a catch
Everything about this album is very high quality. Pleasing song choices, a top rate artist, phenomenal sound quality, and the twenty tracks. However, I must rate it at 4 stars because it claims to be "The Very Best of Taj Mahal". This is, better stated, the very best of Taj Mahal throughout the 1990s. Everyone who appreciates fine blues music will easily appreciate this fine sampling of his later works.

Despite this not being a sampling of all his works throughout his musical career, this album is a fine selection to own. Many of these tracks highlight Mahal the eclectic, a genius who in later years combined strong elements of jazz, Zydeco, Calypso, reggae and tribal music fusion with his blues.

Take the first track, "Senor Blues". This song begins with a bossa nova kind of feeling, with Mahal singing the song with a Latin inflection. Track two, "Don't Call Us", has almost a pop feeling to it, with elements of gospel music somewhere within. Tracks three and four have a much more down-home blues feeling to them. Track five, Betty and Dupree, has strong country blues qualities. The mixture is unique throughout on this album, showing a side of Taj Mahal fans who had not steadfastly followed him throughout his career might not easily recognize. Often I have played these tracks for friends who do not believe me when I tell them it is Taj Mahal.

Excellent album for your collection!

Remember Jolt Cola? This is it right here. The best live performance ever recorded with the worst sound engineering. The engineers must have been buying beers at the time. Lizzie Leaps In = Quincy Jones tribute - thanks Barrence. Saw him open for George Thorogood - spilled orange soda on himself for effect. Pure energy, pure blues. Love it, live it. Saw him at Brandeis - had 10 audience members at first, 225 by the end of the set.

Piazza is consistantly a good player year after year. His backup band continues to grow but I don't think the same can be said for Rod. I think many Piazza fans would love to see recorded more adventerous harmonica such as in the song "Devil Foot". This CD is well recorded (except for two of the songs being out of pitch, which may nag those of us who like to play along)and an honest reflection of what Piazza sounds like live.

Solid, no-frills blues
Sam Myers is a longtime veteran of the blues, and believe it or not, this is his first solo album. Backed by a nice combo led by guitar legend Mel Brown, he storms through a set of mostly original's that showcase his fine singing and heavily amplified harp playing perfectly. There are a few covers of lesser known blues song's including Robert Lockwood's "My Daily Wish" and Otis Spann's "Burning Fire". Pick up this cd if you like rough and lowdown blues. This may not be the most essential blues album of all-time, but it's still very good.

Best Blues band you never heard of....
Yet. Watch for these guys. It's inevitable that at some point they'll get the national exposure they deserve. I came across them by accident and can't stop listening.
Really the best hard driving Texas guitar Blues I've heard in a long time. Some may make comparisons in part to Stevie Ray, the Thunderbirds, etc. While I think on some songs share some simililarities, I don't think they're derivitive of the genre as say, Los Lonely Boys can be at times. They definitely have their own unique approach and sound...hard to do in a style of music that has been done to death.
Vega's vocals and guitar playing is top notch and the band is tight and balanced. Check out the live album "Yeah, You Right" to hear how tight this band is.

Blues Head Gives Good Blues
This is one of the finest discs released in 2000. Steve Pierson has assembled an all-star band that is really impressive: Co-Producer Laurence Juber on guitars, Michael Murphy on keys, Gerald Johnson on bass and Tony Braunagel on drums. Steve is an excellent slide guitarist and singer as well as a very talented songwriter who penned all but one of the ten songs on this disc. I would strongly recommend this debut release to all fan of blues rock and if Blues Head comes to your town, use yours and do not miss them! ;-)

The Title Says It All!
If you dig T-bone, don't pass on this cd. The great guitarist is in fine form on this very enjoyable late 60s release. To start off, T-bone introduces himself while tickling the ivories then segues into a spirited, funky rendition of Everyday I have The Blues. This is followed by another great performance of Woman You Must Be Crazy. The rest of the album maintains an upbeat pace with plenty of funky grooves. As a bonus, the session was well recorded.

Johnny Young "Chicago Blues" Album Review

1969 UK Blues LP Rarity "Fat Mandolin" Given Stunning Remaster & Remix + Four Previously Unreleased Bonus Tracks!
Issued in late 1969, "Fat Mandolin" was Johnny Young's sole LP on the now legendary UK cult label Blue Horizon. This CD is based around that album. Listed at £80 or more in most UK price guides, I've only ever seen one original copy of the LP in the 15 years I've been mail-ordering rare records. "Fat Mandolin" (Blue Horizon 7-63852) was reviewed by the specialist publications in the UK Blues Press at the time, received precious little airplay, let alone distribution, and is therefore reckoned to have sold less than 500 copies! This 2007 reissue finally gives this legendary and expensive rarity a full-on CD remix & remaster and adds on four previously unreleased tracks from the album sessions bumping its 12-track run up to 16.

There are also extended versions of some songs; Track 5 features a false start followed by the master version; Track 8 is the same; Track 9 features 3 false starts & then the master take (take 4, the master take, starts 2 minutes in); Track 11 has 2 false starts and then the master take.

Using iTunes editing on 5, 8, 9 and 11 - you can sequence the original 12-track LP track run as follows; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13.

The tapes have been supervised and transferred by Mike Vernon, Sean Lynch and Graham Sharp at Sound Mastering and a typically fabulous job they've done too - muscular, clean and in your face. There's an in-depth booklet, pictures of the UK and US album artwork, discussion of his career and the album session itself, the Blue Horizon logo's on the label and there's even a nice card wrap on the outside giving the whole package a classy feel. With way too many inches on his waistline and his preferred instrument being the mandolin (unusual for Blues players), it's also not difficult to work out how the album got its name!

Born in 1918 in Mississippi, Johnny Young had a voice similar to Little Walter. And yet, like Big Joe Turner too, there was also a sly sense of fun about him. He played both guitar and mandolin and was of the hard-hitting Chicago Blues tradition - mean, miserable and magnificent! Young hung out with and played with Muddy Waters and Sonny Boy Williamson in the mid Forties, Snooky Prior in the Fifties and also had stints with Walter Horton, James Cotton, Otis Spann and even Mike Bloomfield in the Sixties. The band on "Fat Mandolin" as you can imagine is tight, seasoned pros and just so up-for-it! Fans of OTIS SPANN in particular will adore this release - his piano fills and runs are just fantastic and brilliantly complimentary to PAUL OSCHER'S mean harmonica playing throughout. From the original master tapes, it looks like most tracks were accomplished in one-to-four takes and the entire album recorded in New York in one day - 5 June 1969! (The remaster has been waiting around since 1998 for a release).

Young made some more albums for ABC in the States, but died of cardiac arrest in 1974 (his huge weight having contributed). He remains something of an unknown compared to the huge names he played with through the years - and hopefully this superb CD reissue will bring him back into the hearts of those who love their blues low-down and dirty. Another top release from Blue Horizon and one I urge you to buy!

MORE GREAT BLUES GUITAR
I've had a lucky streak lately. PHIL BROWN / JAMES HUNTER / NIMMO BROTHERS and now TINO GONZALES. These are all names that barely raise an eyebrow and are pretty hard to find. While a lot of mediocre musos and music dominate the market, these superb artists labour in relative obscurity. WHERE IS THE JUSTICE. This is another sensational player that should be well known. The playing is somewhere between SRV / PRINCIPATO / BUCHANAN and a number of KINGS and need not worry about comparisions to the aforementioned. This is BLUES with a sense of humour and many sterling moments. While not every track is a killer, there are no duds either. If you like the BLUES, buy this as it will introduce you to another excellent player with a bright future.

Preacher Boy "Demanding to Be Next" Album Review

GREAT album
I only recently came across this album (already having all the previous Preacher Boy albums) & it's now constantly on the car stereo! For the first time the kids like one of 'my' records, and actually sing along to some of the songs (they love 'Whistleman'). This is just Preacher Boy (Chris Watkins) and his collection of old acoustic guitars, including a number of ancient resonators. The songs are fascinating stories and I keep finding something new every time I listen (just discovered the reason for the inner sleeve photo - it's an image from the lyric of 'Nehemiah James'!). If you want to sing along the go to his website for the written lyrics - man I WISH I could write & play like that. As far as I'm concerned there is not a bad track on this - wonderful: GO & BUY IT!! I'm itching for the next album!!

what a great album if you like early blues ,bb had not found his love "lucille" it is such a distinctive sounding guitar, and boy can he play this guitar as good as,you know it is bb as soon as the first guitar note but nicely different,and sound quality early 50's ?superb.worth every penny.

I have this album but have been dragged, kicking & screaming, into the digital age. All my records are now enclosed in drywall cuz I was too lazy to move them (400+) during a remodel. Anyway, I LOVE the 12 minute version of "Little Village." The piano player is clearly Sonny Boy's smacked-out brother-in-law who keeps falling face-first into the keyboard about 10 seconds into each take. Sonny Boy yells at an exasperated engineer: "He'll git it, he'll git it!!" The tinny voice of the engineer replies: "OK. Take 92--Little Village." Sonny Boy hits it & blammo--the piano player falls off his bench. The engineer gets so dingy he finally can't recall the name of the song. Sonny Boy shouts: "Little Village! Little Village, M*therf*cker!!
Tempers flare, songs never get sung, and we get to laugh our fool heads off. This cut will always get a dullish party group loosened up. Or it will get everyone to leave--if they don't laugh, you don't need to know them. Either way, it ought to be played, always and often.

Playin Around continues an attempt to revitalise the Hinton recordings to the general public at large. Each track is a structure of pure soul that leaves one wondering "what if". The bonus live recordings from the 90's are worth the price of admission to those Hinton-holic's who simply can't get enough of his gigantic contribution to a lost period of American music in it's finest moments.
Shame on you if your record/cd collection lacks any of Eddie Hinton's music, your all the poorer for it.

There are a couple of cuts on this cd you can keep but, Keep" the Thrill is gone " and, the deep cut of " you're mean " cause it rocks .Over 8 minutes long it's BB's best jam session ever! With Hugh and all the boys they jam.. sounds more like a rock band than blues.... awesome..

"The Thrill is Gone" is a blues song written by Rick Darnell and Roy Hawkins in 1951 and popularized by B. B. King in 1970. The song was first recorded by Hawkins and became a minor hit for the musician. King recorded his version of the song in June 1969 for his album Completely Well, released the same year. The song's polished production and use of strings marked a departure from both the original song and King's previous material. When released as a single in December of 1969, the song became the biggest hit of King's career (#3 R&B / #15 Pop) and his signature song. B. B. Acutally, I like this, one of the more inventive albums from the era. Putting Muddy Waters together with a bunch of hardcore psychedelic players actually made sense. By 1968 acid rock bands playing hard electric blues were a commercial force, and Muddy hadn't had a hit for a long time. So lets use all the goodies - distortion, fuzz, wah wah, and a drummer who isn't shy. Doesn't sound like Muddy got it, but for the most part, he sounds great. Most of those other bands didn't have a vocalist who could touch him. It sounds like a Jimi Hendrix session with Muddy singing instead of Jimi - definitely an improvement. It's got a touch of funk like a very early Funkadelic and it's messy as hell. Muddy wasn't going to do many takes on these songs, and lets face it. These guys may have been inspired by Hendrix, but they weren't THAT good. Muddy is most uncomfortable on "Let's Spend the Night Together," and I can understand that. He probably wasn't thrilled doing a song by a band that named themselves after his first big hit and more or less used his in-your-face macho schtick to make millions. The covers of his own songs are better than most of those other bands' versions. "Herbert Harper's Free Press News" is a real gem. I saw Muddy perform a few years after this with a band more to his original style, and he wasn't near as good as on this album. His band was mediocre, like they learned to play listening to Ventures records. Maybe they had an off night, or maybe he hired cheap talent when he was on the road. Anyway, I bought this album in the Tay Ninh Base Camp PX in 1969 where it was one of only two records on sale. We played this album until the dust more or less destroyed it. The CD has brought back great memories.
