Born in La Línea de la Concepción, singer and guitarist Alba Blanco has been building an explosive musical identity since 2017, blending rockabilly, blues, rock and roll, and American roots music.

En el programa 100 de Flash Blues recuperamos a Charles Brown, uno de los grandes nombres del blues elegante de la Costa Oeste, pero no para volver a sus grabaciones más conocidas.

Viajamos a 1992, cuando, con setenta años, grabó para Muse Records el álbum Blues and Other Love Songs. Nuestra Pista del Día es “I Put Myself Together”, una composición propia de más de ocho minutos en la que Brown canta y toca el piano con esa serenidad que solo dan los años. A su lado, Danny Caron a la guitarra, Ruth Davies al bajo y Gaylord Birch a la batería sostienen un sonido sobrio y cálido. Y atención al saxo tenor de Houston Person, que va ganando protagonismo.

Una canción sobre recomponerse tras una decepción sentimental y una magnífica manera de escuchar al Charles Brown de 1992.

For Flash Blues episode 100, we return to Charles Brown, one of the defining voices of sophisticated West Coast blues. But this time we are not revisiting his best-known early recordings.

Instead, we jump to 1992, when the seventy-year-old singer and pianist recorded Blues and Other Love Songs for Muse Records. Our Track of the Day is “I Put Myself Together”, an original song lasting more than eight minutes, with Brown delivering every line and piano phrase with effortless poise. Guitarist Danny Caron, bassist Ruth Davies and drummer Gaylord Birch provide the understated backing, while Houston Person’s tenor saxophone gradually takes centre stage.

It is a song about putting yourself back together after heartbreak, and a fine reminder that Brown had much more to say in 1992 than simply looking back at his past.

El pianista barcelonés lleva más de dos décadas defendiendo el blues y el boogie woogie desde el teclado, y aquí convierte cada pieza en un pequeño universo.

La Pista del Día es "Ritual", una pieza donde el boogie no corre por correr: la mano izquierda levanta un motor hipnótico y la derecha juega con espacio, respuesta y travesura. No es velocidad de exhibición; es arquitectura rítmica. Cierra la puerta, imagina al pianista delante y deja que el ritual empiece.

The Barcelona pianist has spent more than two decades championing blues and boogie woogie from the keyboard, turning every piece into its own small universe.

Today's Track of the Day is "Ritual", where boogie does not rush simply to show off. The left hand builds a hypnotic engine while the right hand plays with space, replies and a little mischief. This is not speed for speed's sake; it is rhythmic architecture. Close the door, picture the pianist at the keys, and let the ritual begin.

En FLASH BLUES 98 viajamos hasta Brighton, Inglaterra, para encontrarnos con Will Wilde, un músico que ha convertido la armónica en un instrumento capaz de competir con la guitarra eléctrica más incendiaria.

Su álbum Blues Is Still Alive, publicado en febrero de 2025 por VizzTone Label Group, es toda una declaración de intenciones. Diez composiciones originales que recorren el blues tradicional, el blues eléctrico y el blues-rock, con una armónica que no se conforma con acompañar: quiere ser protagonista.

Producido por el propio Wilde, el disco cuenta con Bobby Harrison a la guitarra, Greg Coulson a los teclados, Russell Carr al bajo y Steve Rushton a la batería. Entre las colaboraciones destaca Walter Trout, invitado especial en el tema que da título al álbum.

La historia de Will Wilde con la armónica comenzó a los dieciséis años, cuando descubrió un pequeño instrumento de plástico en una fiesta. Lo que parecía una simple curiosidad terminó convirtiéndose en una auténtica pasión alimentada por los discos de Muddy Waters y otros grandes maestros del blues.

Pista del Día: «Stole My Love»

Para esta entrega hemos elegido «Stole My Love», un slow blues compuesto por Will Wilde que habla de traición amorosa, desengaño y heridas sentimentales.

Aquí Wilde baja las revoluciones y demuestra que detrás del músico explosivo también hay un intérprete capaz de construir una atmósfera cargada de emoción.

Su armónica parece dolerse, enfurecerse y contar por sí misma la historia. Bobby Harrison aporta la guitarra y el resto de la banda sostiene una interpretación donde cada nota encuentra su espacio.

Porque cambian los tiempos, las costumbres y hasta las maneras de enamorarse, pero cuando alguien te rompe el corazón, el blues sigue teniendo mucho que decir.

In FLASH BLUES 98, we head to Brighton, England, to meet Will Wilde, a musician who has turned the harmonica into an instrument capable of standing alongside the most explosive electric guitar.

His 2025 album Blues Is Still Alive, released by VizzTone Label Group, is a powerful statement of intent. Ten original compositions move between traditional blues, electric blues and hard-hitting blues-rock, with the harmonica firmly in the spotlight.

Produced by Wilde himself, the album features Bobby Harrison on guitar, Greg Coulson on keyboards, Russell Carr on bass and Steve Rushton on drums. Special guest Walter Trout contributes guitar to the title track.

Wilde's love affair with the harmonica began when he discovered a small plastic instrument at a party at the age of sixteen. Hours spent playing along with Muddy Waters records eventually helped shape his distinctive, guitar-inspired approach.

Track of the Day: “Stole My Love”

Our selection is “Stole My Love,” a slow blues written by Will Wilde about betrayal, heartbreak and emotional pain.

Here, Wilde slows things down and proves that his harmonica can do much more than deliver high-energy solos.

The instrument almost tells the story itself, shifting between sorrow, anger and restrained intensity. Bobby Harrison's guitar and the band's measured accompaniment create an atmosphere full of tension and feeling.

Times may change, but a broken heart still knows exactly where to find the blues.

The blues is still alive. And apparently, it's breathing through a harmonica.

Esta semana en Blues Syndicate viajamos musicalmente hasta Atlanta, Georgia, para descubrir a uno de esos músicos que hicieron del blues una forma de vida, aunque nunca alcanzaran la fama de los grandes nombres del género.

Luther “Houserocker” Johnson fue un guitarrista y cantante profundamente influido por Jimmy Reed, que desarrolló buena parte de su carrera en los clubes de Atlanta, especialmente en el Blind Willie’s, donde su música encontraba su escenario natural.

Su discografía fue sorprendentemente reducida: apenas dos álbumes de estudio publicados por Ichiban. En 1998, el sello reunió once canciones en Retrospectives, un recopilatorio que permite conocer su manera de entender el blues: directa, sin adornos innecesarios, con mucho ritmo y una guitarra siempre al servicio de la canción.

No estamos ante una obra maestra olvidada, sino ante algo que también merece nuestra atención: el testimonio musical de uno de esos trabajadores del blues que mantuvieron viva la tradición noche tras noche.

La influencia de Jimmy Reed en Luther “Houserocker” Johnson nos permite recuperar otra página de la historia de Blues Syndicate. LUTHER “Houserocker” JOHNSON — RETROSPECTIVES

This week on Blues Syndicate, we take a musical journey to Atlanta, Georgia, to discover one of those musicians who made the blues a way of life, even though they never achieved the fame of the genre’s biggest names.

Luther “Houserocker” Johnson was a guitarist and singer deeply influenced by Jimmy Reed. He spent much of his career performing in Atlanta’s clubs, particularly Blind Willie’s, where his music found its natural home.

His recorded output was surprisingly limited: just two studio albums released by Ichiban. In 1998, the label brought together eleven tracks on Retrospectives, a compilation that captures his approach to the blues: straightforward, without unnecessary embellishments, full of rhythm, and with a guitar always serving the song.

This may not be a forgotten masterpiece, but it offers something equally worthy of our attention: the musical testimony of one of those hardworking bluesmen who kept the tradition alive, night after night.

Because at Blues Syndicate, we remain convinced that some musicians made history, while others made that history possible.

WILLIAM CLARKE - BLOWIN´LIKE HELL

William Clarke was one of those musicians who made the blues a matter of personality, power, and talent.

Born in Los Angeles in 1951, he developed his own harmonica style, powerful and deeply rooted in electric blues. In 1990, his arrival at Alligator Records was marked by the release of Blowin’ Like Hell, an album produced by Dick Shurman that also showcased his extraordinary ability as a songwriter and singer.

In this Blues Syndicate program, we explore its eleven songs, from the energy of “Lollipop Mama” to the impressive title track, including “Must Be Jelly,” a composition that won an award at the 1991 Blues Music Awards.

En 1970, Calvin Leavy llevó una historia nacida en Arkansas hasta el n.º 40 de la lista R&B de Billboard. Cummins Prison Farm conserva la urgencia de una toma que no necesitaba adornos.

Hay canciones que no describen un lugar: lo vuelven audible. Cummins Prison Farm es una de ellas.

Leavy, cantante y guitarrista de Arkansas, grabó el tema en Little Rock con la Leavy Brothers Band. La canción había sido escrita por Bill Cole; el grupo la registró en una sola toma. In 1970, Calvin Leavy took a story born in Arkansas to number 40 on Billboard's R&B chart. "Cummins Prison Farm" retains the urgency of a recording that needed no embellishment.

There are songs that don't describe a place: they make it audible. "Cummins Prison Farm" is one of them.

Leavy, a singer and guitarist from Arkansas, recorded the track in Little Rock with the Leavy Brothers Band. The song had been written by Bill Cole; the group recorded it in a single take. In May 1970, it entered Billboard's R&B chart, where it remained for five weeks, reaching number 40. In Memphis, it also reached number 1 on WDIA's programming.

On FLASH BLUES, we revisit this recording to return to the place where soul-blues becomes testimony, nerve, and song.

Hay discos que se anuncian con una idea y revelan otra cuando se escuchan de cerca. Jammed Together, publicado por Stax en 1969, reúne a Steve Cropper, Pop Staples y Albert King bajo un título que sugiere una jam libre. Sin embargo, el programa de esta semana parte de una clave distinta: la sesión fue planteada en estudio, con overdubs y una construcción cuidada, no como una improvisación espontánea.

Ahí está precisamente su interés. Albert King aporta su autoridad en el blues eléctrico; Pop Staples lleva al repertorio una voz marcada por el gospel y el soul; y Steve Cropper pone ese fraseo limpio y elegante que ayuda a reconocer de inmediato la huella Stax. Some albums are advertised with one idea but reveal another upon closer listening. Jammed Together, released by Stax in 1969, brings together Steve Cropper, Pop Staples, and Albert King under a title that suggests a free-flowing jam session. However, this week's program takes a different approach: the session was recorded in the studio, with overdubs and careful construction, not a spontaneous improvisation. That's precisely where its appeal lies. Albert King lends his authority on electric blues; Pop Staples brings a voice marked by gospel and soul; and Steve Cropper provides that clean, elegant phrasing that immediately identifies the Stax signature. Surrounding them is a roster of Stax musicians, including keyboards, bass, drums, harmonica, and horns.

The setlist includes tracks such as "What'd I Say," "Tupelo," "Opus De Soul," "Big Bird," "Don't Turn Your Heater Down," and "Knock On Wood," among others. A program to listen to how three very different personalities hold their own within a production that knows when to let the rhythm breathe and when to tighten the pulse.

En 2009, Ruthie Foster publicó The Truth According to Ruthie Foster, un disco en el que el blues, el soul y el góspel conviven con una energía arrolladora. Grabado en los legendarios Ardent Studios de Memphis, el álbum reúne a una banda de auténtico lujo: Robben Ford a la guitarra, Jim Dickinson a los teclados y Charles Hodges al órgano Hammond.

FILTHY!, un violín con barro y electricidad. Hay discos que suenan a estudio y otros que parecen salir directamente de un garito, con el amplificador caliente y la carretera todavía pegada a las botas. “Filthy!”, de Papa John Creach, pertenece a los segundos. Publicado en 1972 por Grunt Records, el sello impulsado por Jefferson Airplane, el álbum muestra otra cara de un músico al que muchos conocieron por su trabajo con Jefferson Airplane y Jefferson Starship.

Creach llevaba décadas recorriendo territorios de blues y jazz cuando el violín eléctrico todavía no era precisamente habitual en el circuito. En “Filthy!” lo coloca en primer plano y lo hace dialogar con una mezcla de blues eléctrico, funk áspero y espíritu de jam. La presencia de músicos del entorno de Jefferson y de guitarristas como John Cipollina aporta músculo, pero deja espacio para que el violín respire, raspe y se exprese casi como una voz.

No es un trabajo que busque el acabado brillante: su atractivo está en la energía directa, en los cambios de intensidad y en esa sensación de música tocada con ganas, sin quitarle las aristas. FILTHY!, a violin with mud and electricity. There are records that sound studio-quality and others that seem to have come straight from a dive bar, with the amp still hot and the road still clinging to their boots. “Filthy!”, by Papa John Creach, belongs to the latter category. Released in 1972 by Grunt Records, the label backed by Jefferson Airplane, the album reveals another side of a musician many knew for his work with Jefferson Airplane and Jefferson Starship.

Ceach had been exploring blues and jazz territories for decades when the electric violin wasn't exactly commonplace on the scene. On “Filthy!” he puts it front and center, making it converse with a mix of electric blues, raw funk, and a jam-like spirit. The presence of musicians from Jefferson's circle and guitarists like John Cipollina adds muscle, but leaves room for the violin to breathe, to scrape, and to express itself almost like a voice.

This isn't a work that strives for a polished finish: its appeal lies in its raw energy, its shifts in intensity, and that feeling of music played with passion, without smoothing over any rough edges. Today's Track is "Give Me an Hour in Your Garden," a more relaxed piece that maintains the pulse and allows you to appreciate the more seductive side of Creach's violin. A great opportunity to discover that the blues can also be played with a bow… and still sound electric.

Hay músicos que llevan el blues en la sangre y otros que, además, se las ingenian para fabricarse sus propios instrumentos. Mac Arnold pertenece a esta segunda categoría. Bajista, cantante y superviviente de una época en la que el blues se hacía con lo que uno tenía a mano, Arnold nos presenta Give It Away, un disco publicado en 2015 junto a su banda Plate Full O' Blues.

Grabado en el Studio 101, en Woodruff, Carolina del Sur, este trabajo reúne a Mac Arnold con Austin Brashier a la guitarra, Max Hightower a la armónica, los teclados y el bajo, y Scotty Hawkins a la batería. Una banda preparada para acompañar la voz curtida de un músico que sabe muy bien de qué va esto del blues.

Y es que Mac Arnold no es precisamente un recién llegado. En su trayectoria figura haber tocado el bajo con Muddy Waters y haber grabado la conocida línea de bajo de la serie de televisión Sanford and Son. Pero hay una historia que nos acerca mucho más a sus raíces: la de su guitarra de lata de combustible.

There are musicians who have the blues in their blood, and others who, in addition, manage to craft their own instruments. Mac Arnold belongs to this second category. Bassist, singer, and survivor of an era when the blues was made with whatever was at hand, Arnold presents Give It Away, an album released in 2015 with his band Plate Full O' Blues.

Recorded at Studio 101 in Woodruff, South Carolina, this work brings together Mac Arnold with Austin Brashier on guitar, Max Hightower on harmonica, keyboards, and bass, and Scotty Hawkins on drums. A band ready to accompany the seasoned voice of a musician who knows the blues inside and out.

Hay músicos que escriben canciones que terminan haciendo historia y otros que, además, tienen que luchar para que se reconozca su propio nombre. Larry Davis pertenece a esta segunda categoría.

En FLASH BLUES 82 nos adentramos en I Ain't Beggin' Nobody, un álbum grabado en 1985 y publicado originalmente en 1987, donde Davis combina su guitarra y su voz con el talento de Oliver Sain y una banda de auténtico lujo.

Coautor de «Texas Flood», Davis tuvo que superar años de dificultades y un grave accidente de moto que le apartó de los escenarios. Pero regresó, y lo hizo con el blues todavía corriendo por sus venas.

Nuestra Pista del Día es «Giving Up On Love», una composición propia en la que Larry Davis muestra toda la fuerza expresiva de su voz soul y una interpretación cargada de sentimiento.

Larry Davis no necesitaba mendigar nada a nadie. Solo necesitaba que escucháramos su música.

There are musicians who write songs that end up making history, and others who, in addition, have to fight to have their own name recognized. Larry Davis belongs to this second category.

In FLASH BLUES 82, we delve into I Ain't Beggin' Nobody, an album recorded in 1985 and originally released in 1987, where Davis combines his guitar and voice with the talent of Oliver Sain and a truly top-notch band. Co-writer of "Texas Flood," Davis had to overcome years of hardship and a serious motorcycle accident that sidelined him from performing. But he returned, and he did so with the blues still running through his veins.

Our Track of the Day is "Giving Up On Love," an original composition in which Larry Davis showcases the full expressive power of his soulful voice and a deeply felt performance.

Larry Davis didn't need to beg anyone for anything. He just needed us to listen to his music.
