Description:John Hollenbeck has gained widespread recognition as the driving force behind the Claudia Quintet and the John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, groups with roots in jazz, world music, and contemporary composition. He is well known for his longtime collaboration with Meredith Monk, composing and performing the percussion scores for her Magic Frequencies, Mercy, and The Impermanence Project.
Hollenbeck was named as both the Rising Star Composer and the Rising Star Arranger of the Year two years in a row (2008 and 2009) in Down Beat Magazine’s Critics Poll. John’s first large ensemble recording, A Blessing, received a 2006 Grammy Nomination, and in 2007, John was awarded the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship.

PART ONE: John Hollenbeck This show spotlights Hollenbeck in each of these roles, opening with music from Rainbow Jimmies (GPE), his new CD of chamber works, played by violinist Todd Reynolds, vibraphonist Matt Moran, and John Hollenbeck.

PART TWO: Future Quest, a quintet devoted to “re-imaginings” of Meredith Monk’s music, with vocalist Theo Bleckmann, saxophonists Ellery Eskelin and Tony Malaby, pianist Gary Versace, and Hollenbeck on percussion. Meredith Monk will be in attendance.

PART THREE: John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, performing music from the group’s new CD, Eternal Interlude (Sunnyside), including three New York premieres.

Rainbow Jimmies is largely devoted to Gray Cottage Studies, composed for Todd Reynolds. The seven studies, scored for violin with vibraphone and/or drumkit, were written by Hollenbeck while at the Blue Mountain Center arts retreat in the Adirondack Mountains.

In recent comments, Kid Rock has said that his record company had previously asked him to stand against “illegal downloading” because he was told that people were stealing from him. According to a BBC report, his response to the label was: “Wait a second, you’ve been stealing from the artists for years. Now you want me to stand up for you?’
In true rock and roll style, this performer wasn’t going to do as he was told. “I was telling kids - download it illegally, I don’t care,” he said. “I want you to hear my music so I can play live.”

Now, in 2008, Kid Rock is boycotting iTunes because he says that artists are not getting their fair share of the revenue generated by the Apple store. He is annoyed at this ‘old system’ “where iTunes takes the money, the record company takes the money, and they don’t give it to the artists”.

Kid Rock crucially talks about how the Internet should’ve been a “great opportunity for everyone to be treated fairly, for the consumer to get a fair price, for the artist to be paid fairly, for the record companies to make some money.”
Of course, as the singer notes, it hasn’t turned out that way but concedes that he’ll probably have to put his music on iTunes at some point but notes that he’s doing ok overall without it: “I’ve just sold a million records, I’m not really feeling that blow” he said.

For all you dog lovers out there – a touching performance. Witness an amazing relationship between an animal and a human being, and hear the hauntingly beautiful piano solo that accompanies them. The song is called “I Giorni” by Ludovico Einaudi, inspired by a West African 12th-century folk song about a hippo who was loved by the people of the surrounding area but shot and killed by a hunter. Einaudi writes, “The song is sung as a lament for the death of a king or a great person or for the loss of a loved one.”

Dazzle's Dazzling Tricks!

Dazzle The Border Collie is now 3 years old - she has been learning tricks since she was a pup. There are about 60 separate tricks shown in the video. Most of these tricks were clicker trained and free-shaped. That means that Katherine Martucci waits for her to offer behaviors and they go from there. Her reason for training the tricks is really just to spend time working with Dazzle and building their communication, and also to entertain her brain! Cazzle actually knows even more tricks than shown in the video but Katherine just couldn't get them to fit!
