For some intellectual discourse and fact acquisition – join Blink Bl_nk for this month’s session: A Black Jack Edition – classic grab bag this month, with talks on hardcore travel, culture difference and a media theorist take on fire safety. Syaheed will be on the decks and Isaac and/or Chew Lin will be on hand to provide the quiz questions and witty repartee. So please come join us @ Space from 7:30pm onwards

THURSDAY - Quill Potter hosts the weekly Comedy Improv Night @ Space. It’s a mere $10 cover just to see if the wannabes on stage will tickle your funny bone – a night of possibilities – there are sure to be gems in the rough. Without a doubt, one of the more engaging diversion you’ll partake in.

FRIDAY - It’s live jazz and with Grey Lyons leading his merry men of Darren Moore on drums and Chok Kerong keys for a snazzy night, enveloping your senses with sharps, flats and a tune or two. 9:30pm onwards @ Cafe. And we’re please to play it dirty with MUGIC @ Lounge from 9pm onwards – featuring Dang, Kentaro and Uly on deck.

SATURDAY - It’s the sultry voice you hear clear across the night almost like wrapping yourself up in velvet in Autumn – a voice that warms and chills simultaneously, we’re pleased to have Alicia Pan on vox, Willy Gathright on bass, Aynsley Green on keyboards and Erik Hargrove on drums. 9:30pm @ Cafe. And we be ending the weekend with a bang with COMM’UNION: the yummy icing of local DJs for a night dedicated to electronic music. 10 DJs, belonging to different crews gather for an evening that promises to be rich in groovy beat, full of melodies and spiced with subtle sounds. From deep house to techno to electro fidget to minimal and soul, we serve you a varied buffet, giving you the choice between two rooms to make your own musical menu. It’s IRESON with some hot stuff – Latin Jazz – entertaining all guests @ Cafe from 9pm. And if you crave for some higher BPM - head on up to LOUNGE with DJs spinning progressive house, old school hiphop/funk and indie rock from 9pm. And then it’s OOTINI Band featuring Boey Yinghao, Mariam John, Robin Ng and Wendy Phua @ SPACE.
Traipsing from flamenco, reggae, and tango to calypso, whilst conjuring odd-time rhythmic spells, Ootini is a spectacular gamble purveying world music with inflections of progressive rock. Citing diverse influences like Opeth, Nitin Sawhney, Rupa & The April Fishes, Pat Metheny and Sara Tavares, Ootini’s music tips a nod to the intrepid listener with a discerning appetite for cultural explorations. And come WEDNESDAY - it’s Matrix Jam @ LOUNGE with invites to all musicians for jam session from 8pm onwards while Tropic Green – a 7 pc doing only original jazz compositions with Susan Harmer on lead performs at SPACE. The musicians bring the music to life with their individual interpretation and the result is music which delights both the public and jazz musicians alike. Tropic Green has been reviewed as “a captivating, intriguing amalgam of fresh ideas and jazz performances …”

THURSDAY - Don Gomes comes out to play @ Cafe. He is recognized as one of Southeast Asia’s finest jazz talent, in demand across Australia and Asia for his skill as a pianist, arranger, musical director, performer and composer. So join him and friends from 9pm onwards.
And if you’re looking for ECLECTIC, head on up to SPACE for The Blackberries. The 5-piece Rock/Pop band was formed in Singapore 3 years ago, they’re a veritable United Nations of musicians, featuring Shanghai’s answer to Dolores O’Riordan of The Cranberries on vocals Berry Ni, and four lucky lads who get to play along with her – True Brit Mike Sutcliffe on Drums, ‘Suff Effrican’ Richard Kohler on Guitar & Vocals, fellow Shanghainese Roger “Waters” He on Bass Guitar, and New Zealand’s 67th most famous export, Greg “Lord Saxmonster” Sullivan on Sax, Vocals and pretty much anything else he can get his hands on to play. They play an eclectic mix of spruced up 80′s, energetic nineties and modern-day classics, always looking out for those one of a kind ‘Oh Yeah!’ tunes that are seldom heard but instantly recognized and loved; they also play a number of Berry & Richard’s original songs. Together they’re the musical equivalent of spending an evening rummaging around a record store pulling out all your favourite tunes.

FRIDAY - Maya Nova takes you on a magical journey with silky voice and jazzy tunes. 9:30pm onwards @ Cafe. Head on up to LOUNGE for some MUGIC – Music is classics and to-be-classics from various spectrum’s of dance music as we join the dots across disco, house, boogie and techno. No cover. No fuss. 9:30pm onwards for some serious boogie-ing.

SATURDAY - It’s AYASCHOOL featuring guests artistes Shawn Letts on sax and Yi Zhe on bass. A night guaranteed to fulfill the jaded music taste. 9:30pm @ Cafe. Dark Knights session with DJs Martin, SekSheng, Aloysius and Alvin spin @ Lounge from 9pm onwards with progressive house and uplifting trance! And if you aren’t feeling like grooving but craving for some cool tunes, Richard takes you on an ambient world music through to down beat progressive trance.

And THURSDAY sees even more talented visitors to Blu Jaz:
1) Zai Kuning’s solo of vocals and flamenco guitar will bring a new perspective to musical art. Entry to LOUNGE only costs a mere SGD 10.
As an artist, Zai Kuning employs a wide range of practices from video to poetry , music, theatre, dance, performance art, installation art, writings and photography. Since 1989 Zai live among many other artist in Tang Da Wu premise which later called The Artist Village (TAV), artist colony discovered by Tang Da Wu who is the pioneer of introducing performance art as a an extension/form of expression among many visual artist. Being interested with physical culture related to rituals zap formed (1994) Metabolic Theatre Laboratory (MTL) during his residency with The Substation, Home for the Arts. SIngapore. MTL is a dance theatre group led by Zai as director, performer and trainer. Its main objective is to search for physical language and movement deeply rooted in the South East Asian rituals. Since 2000 zai have extensively travel within Riau Archipelago insearch of the Orang Laut (Sea nomad who is one of the oldest inhabitant of Singapore). He completed his short film “RIAU” 2003. RIAU is now a permanent collection of Fukuoka Asian Art Museum and Singapore Art Museum.

2) And if you’re looking for some new sounds, check out ‘Nuf Said’ @ Space for their ONE NIGHT ONLY pit stop in Singapore. Tickets are at SGD 15. This original 6 pc funk/soul/jazz band flies in from New York City and has been performing creative original songs as well as fresh arrangements of soul and funk tunes. The band has developed its unique sound featuring strong soulful vocals combined with raw high energy, hiphop & funk influenced groove and burning yet sophisticated jazz instrumental improvisation on stage.

FRIDAY: Fendi and Fuze Collective takes center stage @ Cafe from 9:30pm onwards. Smooth as silk, his voice wraps around you, elevating you to a different dance plane. SoulStrut sees Norman, JB and JNR on decks @ Lounge from 9:30pm onwards with full on SOUL tunes. And if you haven’t already caught them @ Alliance Francaise on Thursday, you’re IN for a TREAT with LES YEUX NOIR – an 6pcs band from France to woo you with raw, passionate gypsy music and hints of jazz. Tickets are are at SGD 10 at the door.

SATURDAY – and you know what that means – AYASCHOOL is IN. THE. HOUSE. Featuring Fusionazz Project, comprising, Sebastian Ho on guitar, Brandon Wong on bass, Aya Sekine on keys, Dan Wong on trumpet, Fabian Lim on sax and special guest, Jimmy Lee on drums. 9:30pm onwards @ Cafe. And once again, if you’re feeling the NEED to boogie, head on up to LOUNGE and SPACE for TURN UP THE HEAT, where DJs – DIGGA MAN DOPE, GHURL, and MY HERO, spin some great dance music for you to get some shuffle on and a 6pc band, Catalogue V, plays current disco music @ Space. It’s a Give As You Please event where your dollar will go a long way with the musicians!

THURSDAY - Word is the name of the game with Poetry Slam residing in SPACE. 7:30pm onwards for lovers of spoken word – be them funny, sentimental or angst filled.

FRIDAY - Well, it’s Lullabies for the Wicked - the bad boys are back with an upcoming album – meaning more kickass tunes. Join Wicked Aura @ Blu Jaz Cafe from 9pm onwards. Come early, house is usually full way before. Given that it’s also the last Friday of the month, Pushin’On takes Lounge and Space by storm and unleash funk, soul, hip hop, electro mixes which not just give pleasure to the ears but will encourage those booty to do some hard shaken’. SATURDAY - All hail AYASCHOOL - jazz made totally accessible. It’s sometimes really difficult to juggle mainstream and esoteric but we think that Ayaschool has managed to keep the spirit… introducing new beguiling sounds to the uninitiated whilst keeping things lively and interesting enough to the jaded. 9:30pm onwards @ Cafe. CUE THE MUSIC means the boys (and sometimes girls) from CHROAM takes over Lounge with some beat-sy electronic mixes. Freshly ripped and mixed for the dancefloor – 9pm onwards.

Simon, a nomade multi-media artist started in Florianopolis (Brazil) who dedicates himself to improvisation; in experimental music with Kalu Keppe. Together with mulit-talented, Jimmy, Timothy and Terence, they will bring you a smorgasbord of sounds creating a visual soundscape. 8pm onwards @ Space

WEDNESDAY - Eddy’s Jam session carries on tradition @ Cafe with great sounds and good vibes. But if your ear leads you down a different path – we feature: FC Five (Japan) Kids on the Move (Malaysia) Ruins and Remains (Singapore) Flesh Disgorged (Singapore) – J-Rock to indie is on the playlist. Daniel does an acoustic set @ Piedra Negra early on at 8pm, kick starting – Quetzalcoatl Alive. The feathered serpent deity from Mexico, Quetzalcoatl, is a ruler of the mythico-historic city of Tollan. Quetzalcoatl is also the name of the grafitti by JABA cloaking Piedra Negra’s wall. Expect TAIMA, our famous mexican “multi-instrumentalist”, outside with his guitars and flutes for some traditional mexican songs. DJ GONZO, DJ Shellsuit and Mr DJ SANAKAN rule Piedra 2 and you won’t stop dancing till we close!
