We have a new website!
As you know, Blushing Ambers has been working very hard to create content and engaging events for our readers. I feel that this journey has lead me much further than I ever expected to go and is taking me places I never dreamed I'd see. In an effort to share all of those exciting experiences and assist others along the way, I have decided to give Blushing Ambers a makeover. I started by merge my three websites into one. Blushing Ambers now easily makes our programs, services and products accessible on one site. We still have a few tweeks that need to be fixed and transfering old blog posts over will take some time, so please be patient as we are making this transition. So, what's new?

We've all been in a place where we've felt stressed and began to let ourselves go in the beauty department. I understand, but some of us are in careers that are less forgiving. I want to help you ladies out! I have expanded my services by creating special offers for women who are serious about bringing their sexy back! Blushing Ambers is pleased to announce that it’s Creative Director/Brown Beauty Blogger and Makeup Artist to women of color, Amberly R. Carter has accepted an invitation to serve as a judge for the 2012 Miss Teen (Chicago), a pageant based on inner beauty.

The 2012 Miss Teen pageant does not have a swimwear competition. Contestants are judged on personality rather than looks or talent. Each contestant has a chance to let their personality shine through during their personal interview with the judges and questions answered as they model casual and formal wear that exudes their personal style.

According to the 2012 Miss Teen website, “Over 95% of contestants participating have never participated in a pageant before.” Each participant is provided training through classes and rehearsal prior to the event.

Though their are thousands of dollars in prizes and the opportunity to represent one’s city, this is “pageantry with a purpose”, one that brings out the best in each teen.

The intentions of this unique pageant are for the participating ladies to have the ability to gain self-confidence, build their self esteem and make life long friendships with the other contestants who are much like themselves. It is with great pleasure and humility that Amberly represent Blushing Ambers on the 2012 Miss Teen (Chicago) judging panel, as the mission statement of both companies are jointly aligned with affirming positive messages that cultivate self-worth for women.

The 2012 Miss Teen (Chicago) pageant will take place June 1st and 2nd.

Does Makeup Help Me Cope with Depression or Do I Have BDD?

In college I suffered greatly from depression and I believe a form of Body Dysmorphic Disorder also known as BDD. I would wake up for class and spend three hours doing my makeup and looking in the mirror. I wasn’t trying to hide flaws, but I was trying to paint away the depression and negative thoughts. Sometimes I would be so focused on doing my makeup that I’d paint my face right through my class. I would look at the clock and realize that it was 30 min into the class time. I had lost all concept of time. When I finished doing my makeup, I’d be disappointed in myself for being late for class and the depression would set in all over again. Sometimes I would just go back to bed. Fortunately this did not affect my achievement in college. I graduated with honors and later went on to receive my M. Ed., still exhibiting the same behavior (late to class because of doing my makeup).

Today, I’m stuck in a higher education job that I find completely boring all for the purpose of paying my bills and outrageous student loans. I am still living this life of depression. I have tried traditional counseling and vitamins to cope with the depression, but I’ve found that doing makeup gives me the greatest joy. It is theraputic, I suppose in the same way a basketball enthusiast takes to the court after a stressful day. This is why I am so passionate about working full time as a print and live performance makeup artist. I can live a HEALTHY life doing what I love. For me makeup isn't a hobby and it's so much more than just makeup...

While in New York for the International Makeup-Artist Trade Show (IMATS) 2012, I was lucky enough to share my story with 5-time Emmy winner, Eve Pearl. If you don't know her story, it's really touching. She became a makeup artist by chance and did not back down from the opportunity because she wasn't "ready". She took risks... Her advice to rising makeup artists, "Never wait to be ready for anything!" Far too often people operate out of fear and Eve Pearl's "Makeup Artist to Makeup Mogul" story is one of triumph over fear. I could relate to her story because she, like myself and many others, was not confident about her skin and worried about what people would think about her as a makeup artist when her skin wasn't perfect. The difference about her is that she faced her fears head on. In fact she took action by created her own cosmetic company which consequently allowed her to solve problems she personally faced with her skin, Just so happened, many of her products became popular because they were universal solutions for the everyday woman.

If it wasn't for my desire to address my mental health issues with what some call an obsession and I call "makeup therapy", I may not have been in the right place at the right time to hear this authentic message. Eve Pearl helped me realize that makeup doesn't just conceal flaws or enhance beauty, but it cultivates confidence.

I ran across a BDD self test published on the pamguide.com.au website that has 8 questions. The test allows individuals to self assess their actions and thoughts about their perceived flaws. The test is targeted for those who want to understand if their thoughts and actions are indicators of a more serious condition beyond poor self esteem, BDD. Those who suffer from BDD alter their lifestyle to avoid others seeing their perceived physical imperfections. One question states, "Do you use makeup to minimise [sic] displaying to others the part of your body that you feel is unattractive?" I am not surprised that this question comes up on a test like this because so many people who are affected by BDD tend to list skin as their number one imperfection and they often use makeup to cover up blemishes and acne.

I'm not sure how accurate this test is, but I found it quite interesting. Please tell me your thoughts.

I've never been to New York before let alone The International Makeup Trade-Show also known as IMATS. I am really excited to be there and learn from some of the greatest makeup artists, many of whom are award-winning. The guest speaker line up includes makeup pioneers such as Joey Mills and Kevin James Bennett. I am hoping to meet Youtube gurus Koren Zander (EnKore) and Kandee Johnson. They both will discuss how they became Youtube sensations. I plan on taking plenty of pictures as this is the largest gathering of professionals in the makeup industry which is held 6 different times in 4 different countries (NYC, LA, Vancouver, Sydney, Toronto, London). There will be several vendors from Inglots to Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics (OCC) and a little birdy told me Motives Cosmetics would be there as well. Perfect Prom Pics - Is Your Makeup Camera Ready?

Prom is quickly approaching and by now you've probably thumbed through dozens of magazines and stalked your favorite celebrities for ideas to steal the night of your prom. Don't make the mistake of looking greasy instead of dewy or your pics might be a disaster. Here are a 5 common prom makeup mistakes that have been known for ruining what otherwise might be perfect prom pics.

1. Too much shine. The last thing you want to do is have a shiny forehead in your prom pics, not to mention, the foundation rubbing off on your dress or your dates collar. A great way to prevent this is to evenly distribute primer on your face before applying your makeup. This keeps the makeup in place and prevents oil from seeping to the surface.

2. Not matching your skin tone. Be sure that the foundation you are wearing perfectly matches your skin tone. Test your foundation color below the cheek and compare it to your neck and chest. Blend the foundation into the neck.

3. Not taking pre-prom pics. Certain products with additives such as sunscreen can make your skin appear white and pale on camera, but not in person. It's important to take a few test pics in advance so there are no surprises when you receive your professional photos.

4. Avoid too much shimmer under the brow bone. Chunky glitter under the brow bone does not reflect well when the camera flashes. Keep the brow bone color subtle or you may look like you have highlighter drawn on your eyes.

5. Preserve the color in your lips. You will definitely want to reapply your lipstick before your pictures, but if you don't have that option. Make sure you apply lip liner to the entire lip under your lipstick as a color insurance. This preserves the pigment on your lips and if the color starts to fade at least you will have a nice tint that will show up on film.

Red Carpet Makeup from the Grammys

There were soooo many beautifully beat faces that walked the red carpet at the Grammys this year. I had the pleasure of watching this year from the comfort of my own couch. The great thing about watching from home, is that you get a close up on the makeup and outfits that celebrities are watching, no crowds! I thought I'd share with you my favorite fiercely made up faces and what I loved about them.

I thought Adele looked stunning with her matte red lipstick. Here's a post I wrote for Fashion For A Cure on how to make red lipstick work for you. Trust, anyone can wear red if they follow those 3 steps! As stated before, she looked stunning on the red carpet, but even more beautiful on stage when she performed "Rolling in the Deep". She had a quick lipstick change, from a statement red to gloss over her natural lip color, before her very first live performance after throat surgery and she was amazing!

Another favorite of mine was Rihanna in her sleek black plunging neckline gown. She's let go of the red hair, which made for some awkward stares a few times... Doing makeup on a red head can be hard to make work with everything. She's gone blond now with dark brown roots and was said to have been inspired by Scar from The Lion King at the Grammy Awards this year. Her makeup consisted of heavily black lined eyes, beautifully bronzed cheeks and nude lips.

My hands down favorite look on the red carpet was Carrie Underwood with her long lushes lashes with a sweep of gold glitter under her lower lash line, and a soft shimmer on the brow bone. This was such a simple and elegant look that anyone can try. Her skin looked flawless and perfect. She wore peach lip shine. She didn't over do it. She truly is a natural beauty and it was evident as she walked the red carpet.

Last Wednesday I was scheduled to publish this post, but I allowed some other life challenges prevent me from writing that day. Now I've heard the news that a great voice has been silenced. Whitney Houston meant so much to so many people. I don't think I have to give many reasons as to why she fits into this series. Having been the first African American female to grace the cover of Seventeen Magazine, she paved the way for many others by breaking down barriers. Here are some of my favorite photos of Whitney.

One woman who is undeniable, America's beauty icon is Michelle Obama. She is such a positive role model for the youth of today with her consistent efforts to address image issues in the country, especially for children are severely over weight with her "Let's Move" initiative. She has recently been mentioned in the news for wearing an outfit twice (isn't that normal???) and challenging Ellen Degeneres and Jimmy Fallon to a fitness matches.

Patti LaBelle was one of the first people that come to my mind when I thought of paying tribute to great African American women who were contributions to the beauty industry. The reason being, Patti has always exuded confidence shown in the way she performed a song and in the types of acting roles she took on. Patti found ways to help us appreciate all of our senses, the most influential being taste as her cookbooks, "Recipes for the Good Life" and "Recipes to Sing About" and others became a trending topic in American culture. The other senses being smell. Patti developed her own line of fragrances, for both men and women. Her collection was made available through one-to-one marketing and mall kiosks.
