2013 BMW M5 Dyno Overview: To distort a Fletch-era Chevy Chase quote, "It's all turbos these days." If you want performance and fuel efficiency — and really, who doesn't — turbocharged engines are your huckleberry. And so it is with BMW's flagship performance sedan, the 2013 BMW M5 Dyno, which packs a stonking twin-turbo V8 in lieu of the erstwhile model's normally aspirated 5.0-liter V10.

The new M5's S63Tü V8 is the kitchen sink of modern engines. It's a Valvetronic-equipped direct-injected 4.4-liter V8, and nestled in the vee of the engine are two twin-scroll Honeywell Garrett turbos, tipping off its "hot side inside" configuration. The 2013 BMW M5 Dynos unique cross-bank exhaust manifold affords its twin-scroll turbines ideal cylinder groupings, unlike the traditional exhaust manifolds of the seemingly similar Audi 4.0T V8.

Charge air is cooled by two water-to-air intercoolers, which are managed by an elaborate system of pumps and heat exchangers. Factory ratings are 560 horsepower from 6,000-7,000 rpm and 500 pound-feet of torque, delivered from 1,500-5,750 rpm.

Boost builds cleanly from very low in the rev range, the engine behaving in a linear manner despite a peak of 22 psi boost pressure. Torque as measured at the wheels reaches its maximum 475 lb-ft at 5,150 rpm, but since the torque curve is less a curve than a slab, there's plenty on tap when the tach is showing small digits. Peak power is... well, we'll get to that.

The torque tabletop is more or less constant from 2,500-5,200, a span that's a bit narrower than the factory claims for reasons we've delved into previously. Essentially, engine dynos load engines differently than do chassis dynos, so on the Dynojet we never see the wide torque "plateaus" claimed by manufacturers of turbocharged engines. In a nutshell, what we see here is normal and expected.

What wasn't normal and expected is the way the 2013 BMW M5 Dyno behaved while on the dyno. Its power at high revs was anything but consistent. Each dyno pull showed less peak power than the prior one, a trend that was observed for eight consecutive pulls.

Heat-soaked intercooler, you might guess, and so did we. Nope. Immediately after the eighth pull — when the apparent heat soak would have been at its worst — all of the intercooler plumbing and heat exchangers were cool to the touch, suggesting the culprit was elsewhere.

On the ninth dyno pull the result jumped back up, neatly splitting the difference between the lowest and highest result observed previously. Whatever was causing power to steadily ratchet downward apparently took a nap. Stabilized output is our usual goal when dyno-testing cars, and the 2013 BMW M5 Dyno didn't achieve it. Nevertheless we were out of time and as that ninth pull was something of an average of the prior eight, that's what we went with as the representative result: 514 hp as measured at the wheels. But keep in mind the 50-hp spread.

BMW's crosstown rival experienced no such power degradation on the dyno. The 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG we recently tested on this very dyno — using the same methodology — was unfazed. Pull after pull, it actually increased in power before finally stabilizing. The CLS63 AMG, too, is powered by a twin-turbo direct-injected V8, though it sports 1.1 liters more displacement than the BMW. The Benz also has conventional single-scroll turbos.

The 2013 BMW M5 has been described as being discreetly wicked. The new car is supposed to be a mid-size sports sedan but it might as well be an exotic sports car. In a new video commercial put together by BMW of Canada, the 2013 BMW M5 is shown doing a very good impression of a speeding bullet. The short two minute clip is a brilliant way to show off not only the speed of the M5, but also the artistic beauty of the sports car.

The well-crafted video is shot in what looks very much like the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. And what better place to film the “bullet” video than a place where high-speed racers have gathered to test some of the fastest vehicles on the planet. There is what appears to be salt building up on the blue M5’s front fender as the car speeds fast toward its targets.

Shortly after getting "shot" out of a tube fashioned to look like a gun barrel, the 2013 M5 gets up to its artificially limited top speed of 155 miles per hour. The high-performance sports car hurdles its way toward a series of targets starting with a gigantic glass apple that is shattered to pieces when it gets hit. The blue M takes aim at three huge water balloons and takes them out one by one in slow motion. The cars isn’t done yet and speeds toward the final bullseye, which it hits dead-on and destroys.

The 2013 BMW M5 has incredible power

The performance of the BMW M5 without question has head-snapping power. It starts with the all-new 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8, dubbed the S63Tu, that produces a whopping 560 horsepower from 6000 to a screaming 7000 rpm, with peak torque of 502 lb.-ft. coming between a low 1500 rpm to 5750. The 2013 M5 gets an increase of 60 horsepower and 119 lb. ft. of torque over the outgoing V-10.

BMW uses a turbocharger that they call “M Twin Power,” where the two twin-scroll turbochargers are placed within the “V” of the engine. The M Twin Power turbo package also includes a first-ever Valve-tronic and Vanos variable valve-timing system in the 4.4-liter V-8. The performance sedan also uses the latest high-precision direct fuel injection and a unique new cross-bank exhaust manifold. The new 2013 M5 won't leave you wanting for more power.

Make sure you brace your head and neck before drive the 2013 BMW M5. The driver steps on the accelerator and launches the new M5 out of the gun and speeds toward the targets. The forward surge is violent as you hear the 560 horses coming to life.

The BMW 335i seems portly -- the scales show 3586 pounds and a front/rear distribution of 51/49 percent -- but that weight actually matches that of the last BMW 335i coupe we tested. Versus the four-cylinder 328i, it carries 100 extra pounds. Where do you think that weight comes from? A hundred points if you guessed the front axle. The added weight is noticeable after back-to-back drives with the 328i, but equally noticeable is the extra forward thrust the BMW 335i so readily supplies. A slightly heavier nose or more power? Decisions, decisions.

Following a refresher for 2009, BMW has introduced an all-new 3-Series sedan for 2012. The E90 3-Series coupe and convertible models—which just received the refresher in 2011—will continue as-is until moving into sixth-generation F30 form in 2013. The 2012 BMW 3-Series sedan features more room, less weight, and new engines. The 328i and BMW 335i numerical nomenclature will be retained, but will make less sense with the new 328i engine. In addition, the BMW ActiveHybrid 3 will join the roster and complete the line of hybrid sedans for BMW.

Growing wider by more than 1.5 inches and longer by four inches, the 3-Series will offer more room, specifically for the rear passengers. Despite the increase in size, the weight of the car is 80 pounds less than its predecessor. Power remains nearly the same, but the engine choices have changed. The 230-hp base 3.0-liter engine in the 328i is now replaced with a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Even though the small 2.0-liter I-4 loses cylinders to the old engine, it is able to produce 245 hp, or 15 more hp than the outgoing car. In addition, it produces 258 lb-ft of torque from 1,250 rpm, 58 more than last year’s model at 1,500 less rpms. The result of the weight loss and power gain is a 0.4 of a second reduction in the 0–60-mph time between the 2011 and 2012 BMW 328i.

The BMW 335i rolls on with a turbo straight-six 3.0-liter engine developing 306 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. It will offer similar performance as the outgoing car: 0–60 mph in 5.4 seconds and a top speed limited to 155 mph. Both engines are connected to an eight-speed unit with start-stop technology for 2012. The difference between last year’s six-speed automatic and the new eight-speed automatic has a direct impact on performance, reducing the zero-to-60-mph time for the BMW 335i by 0.3 of a second compared to the outgoing model. The six-speed manual will continue as an option.

The futuristic lines of the Vision EfficientDynamics sports car and eye-catching silver, black and blue colour scheme gives Hunt a real head-turning entrance.

TheChargingPoint.com got a pre-release glimpse of the film at a private screening at the London IMAX courtesy of BMW. The film’s plot chronicles Hunt and his team’s struggle to stop a madman from wreaking apocalyptic nuclear mayhem on earth. And this is just the latest in BMW’s 75-year history of featuring its vehicles in movies.

In 'Ghost Protocol', the i8’s sporty design and dynamic character is enhanced by indulgent camera work, and some of the car’s new technology is also highlighted. In the night-time city driving scenes, the concept’s aggressive front-end is showcased, with the trick LED and laser headlights in full view.

Laser lights have huge advantages over LEDs; they use less than half the energy and the light intensity is a thousand times higher. Additionally, a laser diode is one hundred times smaller than an LED diode.

The audience is also given an impressive working display of the car as it takes part in an-against-the-clock sprint through downtown Mumbai, while Hunt and fellow agent Jane Carter (Paula Patton) try to stop evil Kurt Hendricks (Michael Nyqvist) activating a nuclear missile via satellite. The driving highlights demonstrate lightning-quick agility and hugely impressive bursts of speed.

For the record, the i8 is a plug-in hybrid concept, combining the modified electric drive system from the BMW i3 – fitted over its front axle – with a high-performance three-cylinder combustion engine producing 220 horsepower and 300Nm (221lb-ft) of torque at the rear.

Some of the car’s interior functions are featured in the film, too, notably a touch-screen controlled satellite navigation system. This is projected onto the car’s windscreen and operated by Carter, enabling the spy duo to cleverly locate the enemy. The feature is based on BMW’s ConnectedDrive technology, which enables drivers to integrate data from the car, driver and surroundings with an all-encompassing network of interactive information.

“We are thrilled to be involved again in another Hollywood blockbuster,” said Ian Robertson, BMW AG Board Member for Sales and Marketing. “The BMW Group leads the way in developing future mobility with a focus on sustainability. One great example is the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept car. The concept car BMW Vision EfficientDynamics created excitement and very positive feedback at the IAA 2009. The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics made it clear that an emotional sports car with the fuel economy of a small car is no contradiction, but could soon be reality.

After successful initial testing of the vehicle concept, the decision for a series-production vehicle was quickly made. The BMW i8 Concept is the next step in the evolution of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept. The result: The most progressive and innovative sports car of its time. Its innovative plug-in hybrid concept combines the modified electric drive system from the BMW i3 Concept – fitted over its front axle – with a high-performance three-cylinder combustion engine producing 164 kW/220 hp and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) at the rear. Working in tandem, they allow the two drive systems to display their respective talents to the full, delivering the performance of a sports car but the fuel consumption of a small car.

Acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under five seconds combined with fuel consumption in the European cycle of under three litres per 100 kilometres (approx. 94 mpg imp) are figures currently beyond the capability of any vehicle powered by a combustion engine of comparable performance. Thanks to the eDrive technology with its large lithium-ion battery, which can be charged from a domestic power supply, the BMW i8 Concept can travel up to 35 kilometres (approx. 20 miles) on electric power alone. Added to which, the 2+2-seater offers enough space for four people, giving it a high level of everyday practicality.

The LifeDrive architecture of the BMW i8 Concept has been carefully adapted to enhance the vehicle's sports car character, and therefore to deliver unbeatable performance and excellent driving dynamics. The motor in the front axle module and combustion engine at the rear are connected by an "energy tunnel", which houses the high-voltage battery. This gives the car a low centre of gravity – and the dynamic benefits that come with it. The positioning of the electric motor and engine over their respective axles and the space-saving and well-balanced packaging of all components result in an optimum 50/50 weight distribution.

BMW M3 DTM Concept Car

Here is BMW Racing car, BMW M3 DTM. This is BMW’s M3 DTM Concept Car, a taster of the near-500bhp racer that will compete in the 2012 DTM (German Touring Car) series. Unveiled at BMW Welt in Munich, it signals BMW's return to the DTM after a two-decade absence; between 1987 and 1992, the BMW M3 won 40 races and had over 150 podium finishes in Germany's premier tin-top series.

Does this new BMW M3 DTM car bear any resemblance to a road-going M3?

Not really, although the new 2012 DTM regulations demand that all cars must use a certain number of standard parts – it’s one of the reasons BMW has re-entered the series. The M3 DTM concept features a carbonfibre-reinforced plastic monocoque (CFRP) with a steel roll cage, a six-speed sequential gearbox, and as per DTM regulations, a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre V8. With air restrictors in place, the eight-cylinder engine produces around 480bhp, and BMW reckons its new M3 racer will hit 62mph in around three seconds and top 186mph.

BMW Motorsport also claims it has been able to ‘call upon the immense technical resources of the BMW Group and apply their innovation to establish performance advantages over their rivals in areas such as engine and aerodynamics’. Massive rear wing notwithstanding, the DTM-spec M3 is 160mm longer than the road car (at 4775mm), those ridiculously blistered wheelarches up the width from 1804mm to 1950mm, and depending on the ride height set-up at each circuit, it’s a mere 1200mm tall (1424mm for the street legal car).

Don’t get too used to the style of this M3 though: the racer only rolled out onto the track for the first time two weeks ago so the team reckons the looks will change significantly between now and the start of the 2012 season.

Anything else?

Besides unveiling the car, BMW also confirmed a few more details of its DTM project. We already know that three teams will race M3s in next year’s DTM series: BMW Team Schnitzer, BMW Team RBM and BMW Team RMG. And now Brit and ex-WTCC champion Andy Priaulx, along with fellow BMW M3 GT driver Augusto Farfus, have been revealed as the first two drivers.

‘It is good to see how our DTM project is picking up speed,’ said BMW’s director of development Dr Klaus Draeger. ‘Next yea, BMW returns to the DTM after two decades. We will be facing our main competitors in the premium sector – and are already looking forward to this challenge.’

‘Getting a new racing programme up and running is a bit like doing a jigsaw,’ added new BMW Motorsport director Jens Marquardt. ‘New pieces are added almost every day, and we must put them together to create the big picture. The BMW M3 DTM Concept Car is an important milestone on our route to the start of the 2012 season. The rollout of the car was successful, and we are now starting our test programme out on the track. The pieces are fitting together perfectly, so we can definitely say: our preparations for the 2012 season are going according to plan.’

To create a car that delivers the most emotion and passion; the only reason why we continue to take GT-R to the next level. In Japan, there has long been a culture of Omotenashi (hospitality), represented by the Way of tea. Only in Japan, is Omotenashi taken to a new level, turned into a form of pure art. We see 'NISSAN GTR' as 'NIPPON GT-R.' The soul of Omotenashi in the Japanese DNA is embedded into GT-R in its ultimate form through our diligence and spirit of encouragement. We have been, and always will. This is us, our quest; taking GT-R to the next level.

GTR Engine

By improving the GT-R’s engine efficiency, its fuel economy has been raised to 8.6km/L (tested under Japan’s 10-15 mode) or 8.7km/L (in JC08 mode), while engine output has been significantly improved to 404kW (550ps)/6,400rpm with maximum torque of 632N・m(64.5kgf・m) from 3,200 to 5,800 rpm. Engine response and torque at mid- and low-speeds, and power at high revolutions, has been significantly improved, mainly due to:

Improved intake efficiency - Air flow resistance has been reduced by adding an intake manifold fitted to the head of each unit and the use of resin in the enlarged air intake duct for the intercooler, and

Improved exhaust emissions efficiency and enhanced control - Air flow resistance has been reduced through a more compact underfloor catalyzer which improves emissions efficiency and reduces weight. For improved exhaust valve cooling performance, a newly-designed metallic sodium-filled valve has been adopted. Valve control timing, the air mixture ratio and ignition timing have been improved as well.

BMW M6

The new BMW M6 concept made its debut at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show. It is based on the BMW E63/E64 6-Series, introduced in 2004. It shares the same 5.0 L V10 S85 engine and SMG III gearbox with the E60 M5, and produces 514 hp (383 kW) / 520 N·m (380 lb·ft).

BMW claims it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds (0-60 mph: 4.1 s [Road & Track [2/06]) the top speed can reach 205 miles per hour (330 km/h) (limited to 155mph).

The BMW M6 has the same 'power button' as the M5 which modifies the throttle response. From ignition, the car delivers 399 bhp (298 kW; 405 PS), but engaging the M button allows the full 373 kW (507 PS; 500 hp). It weighs 3,770 lb (1,710 kg) thanks to a carbon fibre reinforced plastic roof panel as well as thermoplastic front wings, aluminum doors and bonnet (hood) and compound boot (trunk) lid.

The carbon fiber and other light materials are used in places like the bumpers and roof that are far from the center of gravity and/or high up, so that they not only reduce the overall weight but improve the handling by reducing the moment of inertia and lowering the center of mass height.

It was offered as both a coupe and a cabriolet. A lightweight CSL version of the M6 was expected to be released in the near future, however, BMW has since officially stated that no such version of the M6 will be built, as there is currently no market for such a model. The 2007 coupe is expected to have a 0-60 mph time of about 4.1 seconds (4.6 convertible)(Road and Track, March 2006). Both the M6 coupe and convertible can be visually distinguished from the 630i, 645Ci and 650i by their deeper front valance with air intakes, more contoured side sills, aerodynamic side view mirrors, an additional rear valance with diffuser and the absence of front fog lights.

In the 2010 model year, the M6 was the second-most expensive BMW sold in the U.S. after the 760Li ($137,000), with an MSRP of $108,150 for the convertible and $102,350 for the coupe. In the U.S. the M6 had one of the largest residual value drops at 19%, as it had little if any changes since its 2006 introduction

Production of the M6 ended in mid 2010, with sales over the five year run totalling 9,087 for the coupe and 5,056 for the convertible.

Platform: A two-door version of the 5-series sedan’s F10 platform, dubbed F12.

Powertrain: The first BMW M6 was equipped with a 256-hp inline-six, the second generation was powered by a 500-hp V-10. The new M6 will have a nearly 600-hp, 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8. Sound familiar? It’s basically the same engine found in the X5 M and X6 M.

Competition: Audi RS5, Cadillac CTS-V coupe, Mercedes-Benz CL63 AMG, Porsche 911 Turbo.

What might go wrong: The turbo engine may be less thrilling than the high-revving V-10, and the handling sharpness may be dulled by weight, as in the new 5-series.

Estimated arrival and price: Look for it in 2012 with a price just north of $100,000.

The E36 M3 GTR BMW is the road-going version of the competition machine built to compete in the 1994 ADAC German GT Cup Touring Car series. Essentially a race car with license plates, it features a stripped out interior and lightweight body panels (dropping the curb weight to 1300 kg), fender flares to accommodate the 18-inch wheels and tires, adjustable front and rear spoilers, a full roll cage and a 300-hp version of the S50 B30 engine. Only two street-legal examples were built

BMW GTR M3

An E46 GTR came to life on February 2001, powered by the P60B40 a 3,997 cc V8 producing 493 hp (368 kW; 500 PS). Unlike the straight-six powered M3 versions, which were outpaced by the Porsche 996 GT3, the racing version of the E46 M3 GTR BMW16 was very successful in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), entered by Schnitzer Motorsport.

Rivals such as Porsche pointed out that this car was more of a prototype as no V8 engine was available in the road-going BMW E46, which is in violation of the spirit of Gran Turismo. In 2001, ALMS regulations stated that cars must be for sale on two continents within twelve months of the rules being issued. To fulfill this rule, BMW put 10 road going GTRs on sale after the 2001 season, for 250,000 euros (then $218,000) each.

BMW GTR M3

The ALMS rules were altered for 2002 to state that 100 cars and 1,000 engines must be built for the car to qualify without penalties. Although BMW could have raced the V8 with the new weight and power penalties under these new regulations, they chose to pull out of the ALMS, effectively ending the short-lived BMW M3 GTR's career.

Two Schnitzer Motorsport GTR cars saw a comeback in 2003 at the 24 Hours Nürburgring, winning 1–2 in 2004 and 2005, as well as entries in the 24 Hours Spa. Onboard coverage recorded in 2004 Hans-Joachim Stuck, Pedro Lamy, Jörg Müller and Dirk Müller on the Nürburgring and Spa-Francorchamps.

Private teams (Scheid, Getrag, etc.) also have fit 3,997 cc BMW V8 engines into the E46 body to race on the Nürburgring, winning some VLN races in the last years.

As of 2007, BMW will begin concentrating on investing future technologies and pioneer new drive systems and concepts. This new strategy is known as Number One, which stands for “New Efficiency” and “New Opportunities.” This will give the BMW Group a lead over their competitors and actively create a more profitable future for the company.

The BMW logotype was divine by the aeroplane engine fabrication the company was founded on. It was declared that a pilot’s view through the propellor was of an alternating white and blue hence the famous white and blue symbol of BMW stems that make up the emblem. To enhance its look in modern day, the BMW logotype has become stylized throughout the years. It now entails solid quarters of blue and white to remain solid.
